Small Batch Chocolate Bars, McConnell's Ice Cream, Stumptown Cold Brew Coffee - Irvine, California
    Justin L.

This is a gourmet grocery store that sells name brand goods at a premium. BUT they do have a handful of specialty products that I won't find at Ralph's across the street. Gelson's can be found at the Oak Creek shopping center near Alton and Jeffrey. Parking is ample, they share the lot with other businesses but I never have trouble finding a close spot. This location was recently remodeled. They added a new hand-rolled sushi bar and wine bar, which is nice. Like most Gelson's, their prepared foods and cheese selections are top notch. I've given their poke a try before, but I prefer getting that elsewhere. The bakery inside is Viktor Benês, and they always have tasty pastries. The Stumptown Cold Brew with Oatly! looked interesting, so I bought one to try. It was smooth with a slight hint of chocolateness, I wouldn't mind getting it again. The Gelson's Peanut Butter Filled Dark Chocolate Bar was a one time purchase though. It could be a bit creamier inside, the filling was dry. As a UCSB alum, they get bonus points for having a large variety of McConnell's pints and single serve cups. The Salted Caramel Chip tasted just as good as it did when I was a student. You won't find me here often. Why spend $7.29 on a box of Cheerios or $11 on a pint of Jeni's when I can drive to another grocery store down the road and get it for less? Nonetheless, their products can fulfill all your household and kitchen needs, if you look beyond prices. So 3.5 stars, rounding up because I like McConnell's.

Last night, I bought a water and cracked it open right away in the parking lot and proceeded to chug because I was thirsty after a long day. Next thing I know I feel a scratch in my throat and notice some sandy, grainy texture in my mouth. I check the bottle and find that the glass had several chips at the top of the bottle under the cap. I literally drank fucking GLASS bro. Never coming back again.

    Tri-tip sandwich/dip

Really disappointed in this place. The deli used to be incredible and everything was made with care. Today I got an inedible tri-tip sandwich and overly dressed crunchy kale salad that was all stems. The sandwich had hard grizzle pieces that could not be chewed. if they are going to charge $20 for a sandwich it better be made with care. This was terrible. All the prepared foods in the deli case also looked sloppy and low quality. They just don't feel like the premium market they used to be, yet the prices haven't changed at all.

This is a neat store. No deep discounts here, but they carry items other places do not carry, so I will be back. Love it. Hope it stays!

It was very crowded due to the upcoming Fourth of July Holiday. Everyone was shopping at the same time. The guy behind me thought it was odd for everyone to show up at the same time around 4 pm. I guess everyone took the day off, or a half day? Also I feel safe in this store. I have a disability and it was easy for me to go around the aisles. There are a few downers though. Picking out fruits and veggies can be a hit, or miss with me. Be sure to check the due dates. It's hard to find fresh strawberries Most of them go bad within a few days in the fridge, and I eat them almost every day. I wouldn't recommend buying the mixed fruit. Mine went bad very quickly and unfortunately had to throw it away. Although I do like their frozen food selections, and finding some meat that were on sale like the ground chicken breast for 5 bucks! You can't beat that. I'll continue to shopping there.

The prices are definitely higher than many other markets, but the quality has always been pretty solid. One of the main reasons I come here is for the Korean beef short ribs. Every time I've bought them, they've been fresh and looked great. The only downside for me is the parking lot. Finding a spot can be a challenge depending on the time of day. Other than that, most of the products here, from frozen foods to kimchi and other groceries, have been consistently fresh. The store is clean, well organized, and doesn't have that strong market smell that some grocery stores can have. Everything is laid out in a way that's easy to find, which makes shopping a little more convenient. The staff isn't especially friendly, but they do their job and I've never had any issues.

Although Buena Park and Arcadia can get a bit tight for parking, it's never that much of a PvP zone where literally the entire zip code is in one place. It's also not the biggest H Mart that I've been to either. It's not a Super H Mart like some other locations. They do have a small food court off to the side, but seating is limited. The food court has Maison de Croissant (yummy croffles and other baked goods), Pizza Chicken Love Letter (at least the last time I checked), and I think at least one more. Like the other locations they have packed deli food and other bento box type foods that get discounted later on. Very busy and very crowded and since it's smaller, a bit more limited. Does what it has to, but definitely better locations out there.

The grocery is good for what to expect for any Asian market but the main attraction is the food court. It may not seem like much but all of them are really good and would fill up your hunger instantly. My favorites from the top of my head are the Katsu Don if I remember correctly and the Udon section where you pick your tempura (don't know the exact name). Overall good place to eat lunch or even dinner. Another problem would be finding a seat since there's hardly any tables and your plate is pretty big and bowls are heavy so you have to be somewhat quick to find a seat. The ambiance is fine but that's kind of to be expect in any supermarket, which is usually crowds talking and all. I really don't have much to say. Ever since this place closed down the anime shop, the DVD store, and bookstore, this place pretty much lost what made Mitsuwa special and worth visiting. Especially for someone who's into both anime and tokusatsu like Super Sentai (Japanese Power Rangers). Those places are what got me my first Gundam model kit (Freedom Gundam from Gundam Seed) and my go to place for Japanese DVDs as mentioned (Gokaiger, Kyoryuger, and Nanoha). I understand why they close down these stores, especially with streaming services and online shopping are a thing, even though I don't fully agree as they are customers like me that would prefer in-store physical copies. That is why I deduct one star. These are replaces with a gachapon store, a Matcha store, a Boba store I believe and Daiso. The matcha and boba place (forgot the names sorry) are surprisingly good. I really like the matcha ice cream in a bowl and I believe the Doncha. The gachapon I cannot say as I never spend money there and I'm not into these gacha machines and I rarely buy anything in Daiso as its just your typical convenience store that sells some Japanese stuff so I won't say much. In conclusion, it's a very nice spot to eat Japanese meals and especially something to fill you up for the day while also shopping to buy Japanese food to cook at home. Just be aware this is pretty pricey, especially the Royce matcha chocolates and the food court.
