Great food and service! If you're looking for the best brunch or breakfast spot in sac, look no further than Genki Kitchen. The team and owner provide excellent service and make you feel welcomed in, like you're part of the family. If you're curious about the food: The Loco Moco & Chicken and Waffles were 1. savory umami bombs 2. portioned for two 3. presented with attention If you've had this place sitting in your pins or lists to go, I encourage you to go as soon as possible! Make an opinion for yourself, but mine is definitely positive. Can't wait to comeback to enjoy something new!

The location is in a cute boutique mall (antique shops and aikido), with a good amount of dedicated parking. Seating inside is comfortable, decorated in neutral tones, with high ceilings crossed by wood beams. While Japanese food isn't what I would normally think of for breakfast, after trying Genki Kitchen, my whole perspective has changed! Take the thoughtfulness and precision of good Japanese/Hawaiian food and mash it up with fried chicken and eggs benedict, and you've got some out-of-this-world flavors (and a very full and happy stomach). I ordered the Genki Benedict, and the balance of milk (!) bread to egg to spam was spot on. Just the right amount of crunch and saltiness. Also the poach was really perfect. Soft and creamy but not running all over the moment you cut into it. To top it off the yuzu hollandaise (served on the side by default) was sweet, fruity, and creamy. Best hollandaise I've had, hands down! Service was very friendly and informative. Will definitely be back and try their lunch menu as well. The Genki poutine (fries with Japanese curry and an egg) sounds amazing!

Genki is a solid breakfast brunch spot my wife had on her list of places to try. I absolutely love the high ceilings in the space which makes the smaller restaurants feel enormous and spacious. Both times we've been here we were immediately greeted by the host, a younger boy, which added to the warmth of what is most likely a family-run restaurant. That warmth extends to the food offerings which consist of Japanese-Hawaiian-American fusion and comfort food. Their loco moco with a tornado egg is a stunning and delicious dish and I love that it comes with 2 styles of gravy! The yuzu hollondaise has the perfect amount of tang to help cut the richness of the spam and milk bread in the benedict. I feel as though the chicken katsu and waffle was missing an element to really make it perfect. I would have added the katsu sauce or pickled ginger to really elevate it. The okonomiyaki was excellent and I loved the amount of vegetables in it. Overall, I really like Genki for the speed of service, friendliness, and inventive food combinations.

Fantastic quality, creative menu options. Their katsu and bread options have no business being this good. And their potatoes. It's like the universal perfect ideal you have in mind when you want crispy in the outside and soft and juicy on the inside. My wife had the Benedict with the yuzu Hollandaise and I had the chicken and waffles. The spam on her Benedict was surprisingly tangy (in a good way). The serving size on my chicken and waffles was overly generous . . . to the point of being over the top (I couldn't cut into it without spilling a lot onto the table). The coffee was fresh brewed but a little mild and lukewarm to my taste. The interior was a bit sparsely decorated, though the belt-driven ceiling fan system was cool (no pun intended). Minor gripes aside, the quality of the preparations and the friendliness of the staff will bring us back here in the future.

The food was so good and definitely worth checking out. The service we received was excellent; our table was kept clean, refills were prompt, and the ambiance felt just right and very traditional. I liked it. When you walk in, it definitely feels like it has great hospitality.

We had SUCH a good experience at Genki Kitchen. It's one of those places where you can immediately tell there's a lot of love behind what they're doing, and knowing it's family-owned made it even better. We definitely ordered enough to get a real feel for the menu and honestly, everything was so good. The Loco Moco was one of my favorites because we tried it with both the brown AND white gravy. The brown gravy was rich, savory and super comforting, but the white gravy surprised me the most because it almost tasted like a creamy clam chowder. I was not expecting that at all, but it worked SO well with the dish. The Katsu Chicken & Waffles was another standout. The chicken was perfectly crispy on the outside and still juicy, and the waffle was fluffy with just enough sweetness. We found out their son had made the waffle batter fresh that morning, along with the whipped cream, and I swear details like that make you appreciate the food even more. The French Toast was beautiful and tasted just as good as it looked. Soft, rich, slightly sweet, with fresh fruit and that homemade whipped cream on top. Definitely one of those dishes everyone at the table keeps taking bites from. We also tried the Beef Udon, which was exactly what I wanted after all the sweet brunch flavors. Tender beef, chewy noodles and a warm, savory broth that was so comforting. And the Japanese Michelada was such a fun surprise. Savory, refreshing, a little spicy and just different enough from a traditional michelada to make it memorable. One of the things I really loved about Genki beyond the food is how intentional they are about supporting other local Sacramento businesses and specialty producers. We're in the Farm-to-Fork Capital, so I LOVE seeing a local family-owned restaurant put that into practice and keep that support within the community. Everything from the flavors to the presentation felt thoughtful and high quality. Truly a 10/10 experience for us. And now I already want to go back because there are way too many things on the menu we didn't get to try.

Genki has a lot of potential to do well, although there is still some room for improvement. I really like their Hawaiian-Japanese fusion brunch concept and the menu is straight forward and simple. The Genki Benedict was served without the yuzu hollandaise sauce, which I didn't realize until after the fact. That was partly my fault for not bringing it up, so I didn't get the full experience of the dish. I'm sure it would've tasted even better with the sauce. The potatoes were also a bit cold. The butter, however, was nice and creamy. The Ika Geso was good, lightly battered and fried just the way I prefer and the sauce paired well with it. The Country Fried Katsu was also good, but again, the potatoes were cold. The Curry Chicken Katsu Don was probably the best dish. Overall, the prices are reasonable, the place is clean, and the staff was welcoming. I'd definitely give Genki another try, especially since the concept has a lot of potential.

Just when I think I've had it all, we find a new spot that becomes another favorite! Genki has a fantastic brunch that is worth celebrating! We came in about 10 midweek and it was empty, so we got lots of time to chat with the folks working which was honestly a delight. They were all so friendly and wonderful. The vibes are super comfortable and very perfect for the food served. I had the Okonomiyaki which was a pillowy, savory dream! My husband had the Benedict which was also wonderful, one of the best hollandaise I have ever had! The potatoes were also super yummy. We split some delicious tempura as well! This wonderful little shop is truly a gem!

Genki Kitchen is a unique brunch spot that serves up Japanese inspired brunch and lunch items. It's in a nice and cozy space that can get quite busy. I found the service to be excellent and friendly. The servers were quick as well. On my visit to Genki I had the opportunity to try the loco moco, udon, and tempura. The loco moco was good and came with a good amount of food. It was also presented nicely. They do the thing where it comes with the knife stabbed into the top of the food. There's also a pretty flower on the top that I think is just there for decoration. It's not necessary, but makes for a pretty photo. The best thing about the loco moco was the hamburger on the top. I found it to be of good quality and size - it's not one of those skinny fast food patties. The only thing I wasn't a fan of with the dish was the sauces, which I found to be a bit heavy handed and rich. Eventually all the rice was soggy. As for the udon, I personally found the broth to be much too sweet for my liking. It was an enormous bowl, but I couldn't get over the sweetness. My kid, who we gave some to really enjoyed it so I guess it's just a matter of taste. As for the tempura, I thought it was fine and did the job, but it didn't blow my mind. Genki Kitchen definitely has some unique and playful items. They are also only open for breakfast and lunch.

Came here on a whim and so glad we did! Their menu is so fun and the service is great. The person who took our order (I think she was the owner) took the time to answer my questions and was very friendly. The food was 100%. Really wish I had a larger stomach to be able to finish my order and also try their other items! Can't wait to go there again!

Finally stopped by for a brunch date and my oh my it has become my fav stop ! It was busy even in a Wednesday but we waited not too long to be seated ! Customer service was warm and welcoming ! Everything we order was delicious ! The kaarage chicken was fried perfectly crispy yet juicy! Presentation of both the loco moco and chicken katsu wasnt just beautifully yummy but pack a good wow to my palate ! Came on a Saturday for brunch. They weren't busy so we were seated after just a few minutes. I'm not sure why there are so many amazing reviews or maybe I just came on an off day but I thought the food was just okay and nothing special. Could use a little more flavor imo. I will also add that I asked for my eggs over easy but they came out as well done sunny side. Eck. Our food also took a looooong time to come out. They weren't even busy and I observed most of the other tables were also waiting a long time for their food. Again, not sure if I came on a bad day, but food took over 50min to come out. That is way too long. I think over time I may decide to try it again, but I do recommend not coming while already starved, especially not with hungry kids.

The ambiance...lovely. The staff...friendly and very welcoming. Our server, Nancy was very kind and sweet to us. The food: delicious! We ordered the meat omelette with country potatoes. The flavor was spot on! Traditional breakfast with a twist. Also got The katsu chicken and waffle. The presentation was impressive. The chicken was beautifully prepared and fried with panko, light and delicious! The waffle nut has a light coconut flavor. This dish is accompanied by fresh fruit and home made whipped cream. Very good place. Cozy but we were able to get a table for four immediately. I had the Country Fried Katsu. It was awesome! The chicken was fried perfectly - done but not over cooked. Today was a lucky day and found this hidden gem! This is the best Loco Moco that I ever had, the meat was so tender with Japanese style egg and smothered with two types of gravy. When the chef came out to greet us which was a very nice gesture, we found out the meat patty in the loco moco was mixed with beef and pork which explains why the patty is so tender, other traditional Loco Moco that I had were usually beef and very tough. The ika geso was crispy with light battered, tasty and definitely not oily compare to others. There are so many more dishes we wanted to try. Can't wait to come back next week! read more

An awesome find! A friend wanted to meet up for late breakfast/early lunch. I was in the mood for Japanese, and lo and behold, I found the Genki Kitchen in the old antique mall where Evans used to be. The food was surprisingly amazing and I can't believe it's not on anyone's radar yet. The owners were very friendly and welcoming. I got the loco moco and the hamburger patty was made with care, and reminded me of my Dad's Nissei hamburger. Get the shake pan, toasted milk bread and the geso. I ordered the Loco Moco. DELICIOUS. Loved the hamburger patty, and especially the tornado egg! My friends ordered the Teriyaki Salmon Skillet. (She loved it!), my other friend ordered the Spam Benedict. She also loved her order. For the appetizer, we ordered the fried squid. It was excellent. Service was top notch. I would definitely recommend Genki Kitchen for Brunch. So yummy! The ambience is very nice. Very cute interior. The restaurant is small. Call to make reservations for Sunday Brunch. They can get VERY busy. Otherwise, you may have to wait to be seated. I called the Friday before and scored a reservation for the 3 of us at 10:30. read more

We were in the area and wanted to try a new restaurant with a different style of food you don't find too often. The food was amazing, we ordered the loco moco, country fried katsu, and side order of milk bread. Both gravies for the loco moco were delicious. The katsu maintained its crispiness even with gravy on top. The texture was great and the gravy didn't overpower the other flavors on the plate. The milk bread wasn't too sweet and had great texture. Definitely want to try their milk bread French toast next time. Nancy, our server, was very sweet, welcoming, and friendly. Great service, good food, and big portions. Genki kitchen is an absolute hidden gem! We got the Genki Loco Moco and the Country Fried Katsu. Both were so delicious. The Loco Moco is one of the best dishes I have ever had. You can tell everything is made from scratch. It was like a flavor bomb in my mouth. Portions are large, great service and all of the staff are so nice. Delicious! We got the katsu chicken and the waffle nut, as well as the loco moco, and everything was so fresh and obviously made with care. Great breading on the chicken, and both loco moco gravies were incredible. Easy parking, it's comfortable inside and everyone's extremely welcoming, and I still have lots of leftovers I'm excited about. Yummmmmmmm. I really want this place to succeed. Genki Kitchen absolutely blew me away--incredible food and bend-over-backward service. The new owners were warm and attentive, clearly pouring their hearts into the experience. This time, we tried the Genki Loco Moco and the French toast. The loco moco was perfectly cooked rice topped with a house-made patty (hands down my favorite part of the dish) and a rich but beautifully balanced sauce. The French toast used bread from Mahoroba Bakery, finished with a pillowy dollop of cream--soft, comforting, and just indulgent enough. Will absolutely be back (soon). I can't wait to bring friends so we can order more to share. Do yourself a favor and go try this place. read more

One of the best dining experiences I've had in a long time! This morning, I searched Yelp for "breakfast/brunch" and it spat out Genki Kitchen. I was aware of the place and assumed it was a lunch and dinner place. So I did a double take and looked a little further. The photos showed the menu which stated "Japanese Inspired Brunch". I was immediately intrigued. Nobody else is offering this... We arrived and were immediately greeted by the owners. Wonderful couple! Really welcoming and generous people. We talked a lot and it was evident that these people have a genuine passion for good food and hospitality. You know what they say..."if you like what you do, you'll never work a day in your life". I believe that applies to this couple. Honestly, it was kind of infectious...I was thinking, if I had more free time, I loved to work here a couple days a week. Upon seating, we were immediately offered hot coffee or tea. We studied the menu...and studied it some more. Frankly, it took us a while to decide because there were so many things that sounded delicious. On to the food. We ordered one savory item (Genki Okonomiyaki) and one sweet (French toast with fruit). The Okonomiyaki was absolutely delicious! The sauce had a tonkatsu base and was sooo good. I tried to ask how the sauce is put together, but it's a secret...and for good reason. This item is a must order. The French toast was top notch. The bread they used apparently comes from the Japanese bakery on Freeport Blvd (Mahoroba Japanese Bakery). If you know this bakery, that's all I have to say. If you don't...put it on your list. The French toast is served with a large dollop of house made whip cream. Not too sweet, not too plain. Just right in my opinion. This is also another must order item. The owners have the place really dialed in. The ambience music style was just right. The volume was just right. The lighting was just right. Fun Fact: Lynn, the well known and highly respected owner from places such as Ramen House Tenjin, Eddoko etc. is in the kitchen doing her usually culinary magic. If you've ever tried her food...I don't have to say any more. read more

Worth the visit! If you know the signs of potentially good asian food you will see only green flags everywhere when you walk in. The staff is welcoming, the vibe is great. I ordered the Genki Okonomiyaki. Never had one before. Will have one again after this! It was savory, creamy, crispy, and lightly sweet from the sauces. The bacon was cooked just right so you could cut through it for each bite. I did wish there was maybe one more piece of bacon, but honestly it was a nice filling portion without an extra piece. Great experience here. My wife and I came with our 2.5 month old and the food and service was fantastic. The owners are very personable and friendly and they really want to make sure you are taken care of coming here. The decor is very simple but bright and feels very vintage in some aspects e.g. the fans run on a pulley and belt system. Highly recommend the kikori omelet, and my wife also really enjoyed the Benedict. Will definitely return! read more

We happened on Genki on Easter Sunday for brunch and what a delightful surprise for us. All the folks there were cheerful, welcoming and extremely attentive. The food was spectacularly delicious. My partner had the Okonomiyaki (the savory pancake made with the Tornado eggs.) We had never seen or heard of such a thing. I had the chicken and waffles. There were three layers of chicken plus the waffle, fruit and freshly made whipped cream. The portions were humongous! I noticed before they brought out our food everyone leaving seemed to be taking leftovers with them, after being served, I realized why. Will I be back? The food here is outstanding, but the customer service truly exceeded my expectations. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a polite young man who seated us quickly; despite the brief wait, he thoughtfully offered us complimentary coffee. After a wonderful lunch, the chef took the time to visit our table, which made the entire experience feel personal and special. We later learned that the establishment is family-run: the young man at the entrance is the chef's son, and our attentive server is his niece. Genki Kitchen is such a neat spot! It was clean with plenty of seating. The front of house staff were all welcoming and personable. Our waitress Makariae (I hope that is the correct spelling) was so kind and witty, we loved her aura. We also had the opportunity to meet the owner who spoke about the authenticity and preparation for their dishes. Our meal was incredible both in presentation and in flavor. Found this gem randomly on a weekend and so happy we did. Our go to Japanese breakfast spot now. We had their French toast which was exquisite, the loco moco was so good!!!! The service was great, very nice folks. The ambiance is small like a hole in the wall type of vibe but enough space to have your own conversations. My lady was a little upset at the world walking in, but soon as that food came out her whole mood changed. Lol highly recommended!!!! Coming back for sure. read more

Came in for my Birthday Lunch. First impression, super clean and was greeted Immediately by the waitress and owner with friendly Aloha smiles. I took my girlfriend here for her birthday and it was a great experience. I believe this is a small family owned restaurant that just opened up. Their Happy Hour features $8.00 items for both food and cocktail drinks though beers are priced at $6.00. Some of the things I've gotten over my visits during happy hour were as follows Blackberry Margaritas Guava Lime Spritz Urban Roots Lager Carne Asada Tacos Single Patty Smash Burger If I'm being honest, the food at Birdies is probably more towards average rather than excellent. The drinks though have all been made excellent and tasted great. This place to me is better suited for a spot to get great drinks before the game rather than great food. Had to stop one more time on my way home. Again, l was welcomed back by son #1 and by both Nancy and Dan. I was touched to see how the family greeted everyone and made folks feel at home in this space. Also loved seeing neighbors visit and love the place that has become a regular for them. We just had an amazing meal at Genki Kitchen in Sacramento and I can't stop thinking about it! We ordered a bento box and an udon bowl, and while everything was delicious, the udon absolutely stole the show. I'm not exaggerating when I say it was the best udon I have ever, ever tasted. The broth was rich and flavorful, the noodles were perfect, and every bite felt like comfort in a bowl. Truly unforgettable. The bento box was fresh, well-balanced, and beautifully prepared -- exactly what you hope for when you order one. WOW. We absolutely LOVED Genki Kitchen! The food was beyond delicious and the service was truly top notch from start to finish. The loco moco was seriously good, and the okonomiyaki was SO flavorful and cooked perfectly. You can really tell everything is made with so much care and love. Everyone was so incredibly kind and welcoming, especially the owner, Dan! Thank you so much for your hospitality and for making us feel so comfortable. Every item was delectable and scrumptious. Unfortunately they were out of the pandan cold brew which we were curious to try. I guess that's a good enough excuse to come back again, not just for the drinks but the other items we didn't get to try. The decor is funky featuring brightly colored walls with geometric patterns. It reminded me of 1960's Mod Squad. It's not a large place but there is outdoor seating available too. Come early because within 30 minutes of opening the cafe filled up quickly. When I walked in, the cashier didn't seem very welcoming, and I let her know that it was my first time there. Since I wasn't familiar with how ordering worked, especially with the build your own vermicelli noodle bowl, I was hoping for a little guidance. Instead, she pointed at the menu and said, "It's here," followed by, "Which meat do you want?" and "What sauce?" When I asked which sauce she recommended with the bowl I chose, she responded, "OG Buddha is the usual sauce ." Her tone and demeanor came across as annoyed, so I didn't feel like I received the welcoming experience I had expected based on the reviews I had read. Initially, I ordered my food to go because I wasn't sure whether the dining area next door was part of the restaurant. Once I realized that it was, I asked if I could change my order to dine in because I wanted to experience the restaurant. She seemed annoyed by my request but told me she would let the other staff know. Afterward, I wasn't given an order number or told where to wait, so I sat on the bench near the ordering area. As I waited, I noticed the cashier interacting more warmly with some of the customers who came in after me. During one of those interactions, I overheard her mention that she was hungover and wasn't having a good day. I completely understand that everyone has difficult days, but I still believe customers should receive consistent service regardless. There also seemed to be some confusion between my order and another customer's order. Eventually, the cashier told me that I could sit in the dining area and that they would bring my food out when it was ready. I really wish this had been explained to me from the beginning, especially after I mentioned that it was my first visit. Once I sat down, my experience improved significantly. About five minutes later, another employee brought out my food, and she was very sweet and attentive. She asked if I needed anything else, and I requested a cup of water. She kindly went and got the water for me. I later realized that the drinks were self serve, which I hadn't known. I actually felt bad that she went out of her way to get it for me because I would have happily done it myself if I had known! She was incredibly kind about it, though, and I appreciated her service. The dining area itself was clean and interesting. It appears that two separate restaurants share one central dining space, almost like a Jack and Jill setup, with a restaurant on each side and the shared dining area in the middle. I do think the dining area could use some improvement when it comes to instructions for finished dishes. I couldn't find a designated station to return dirty plates, and it seemed like other customers were confused about this as well. Many of us didn't feel comfortable simply leaving our dishes on the table for the bussers to collect. I ended up following what another family did after they also looked unsure of where to put their dishes. They eventually placed theirs in one of the bins the bussers were using to collect dirty dishes, so I did the same. I also wish I had been told that to go containers and bags were available for leftovers. I ended up figuring that out on my own. Overall, I think a few signs or simple instructions explaining where to sit, how food is delivered, where to get water, where to return dishes, and where to find to go supplies would make the experience much easier for first time customers and probably easier for the staff as well. Now for the food: it was delicious! I was genuinely impressed by the quality, freshness, and texture of everything. The food was definitely the highlight of my visit and would absolutely make me want to return. Overall, the food was excellent, and the employee who served my meal was wonderful. I think clearer instructions for first time customers and more consistent customer service would make a huge difference. Unfortunately, my initial interaction with the cashier made my first visit feel uncomfortable and left me feeling a little out of place, but the quality of the food helped redeem the experience.
