Genki is always fun for both locals and visitors. Unfortunately, they did away with the conveyor belts and only have the bullet trains now, which makes it slightly less fun, since you don't get to see all the sushi going by. It's also a bit cumbersome to have to pass the tablet around the booth to let everyone order. The food is good, sushi but nothing special. I can usually fill up on a bowl and 2-3 rolls. Ends up being about $10-15, which isn't that bad. My favorites are the chicken karaage bowl, kabocha tenpura, tamago nigiri, and the handrolls. Food also comes out pretty fast, which helps you order the appropriate amount. It does seem like the prices have been getting higher and the portions smaller overtime. They don't take reservations, so the wait can be 30-60 min if you have a larger party. Overall, Genki is a fun place because of the bullet trains and being able to see the number of plates you're able to stack up. The portions are small, so you can try a variety of sushi and they also have more filling bowls and things for non-raw fish eaters. The sushi and food is good, especially considering the price. I tend to gravitate more towards kuru kuru if I had to choose, but Genki is often more convenient due to having more locations. read more

I am surprised as heck that I haven't reviewed this place. My little sister and I frequent this location often because she goes to school at Chaminade and I work in Waikiki, so sometimes after work/school we'd stop by. I love this location because: easy parking (shared w/ Safeway Kapahulu), tablet ordering system (get what you want w/o waiting for server), and GREAT SERVICE (I haven't had a bad experience yet)! Everytime we come, we're greeted and we're seated prompt. They are pretty small store, so I'm sure during busy times, you'd have to wait. But because of the menu ordering system, items come out fast so I'm sure you won't be waiting TOO long. The last time we went, my brother and sister had "difficult" orders such as wanting their iced tea halfed with water (too sweet) and lemon. The server we had was sooooo nice to accomodate us and she made it PERFECTLY and was even joking with us. We told her to patent it. The overall quality of sushi seems pretty standard. We came in at a off hour at about 4'ish. Some of the sushi on the conveyor was looking a bit "tired" but this is why one will place an order for sushi between peak times. Service was attentive, the table staff would come by and ask if we wanted to order anything and refill the tea or water. I thought the tuna poke was reasonably good. This shop could use a bit of refreshing-cleaning. No sticky floors but it definitely has that high traffic feel inside. Not likely to stop in again but we wanted to see how this chain was. read more

Is definitely a reliable place to come when craving sushi and fried dishes on the cheaper end of things. My parents come here like every week. No joke. So I'm bound to come along one, two, maybe a hundred times! I like this location a lot better than the old Kapahulu location. It has a way better parking situation and there's also less people. The staff is also nice every time we come. I like that this location has the bullet train system now because the food comes super fast! Seriously I was so hangry today I took the tablet to order first and my food came in no time! This is seriously the best Genki Sushi on the island. I remember feeling really sick and hungry the other day and really just wanted some miso soup and some sushi. When my boyfriend and I walked in the place it was ice cold. Which is awesome since it was super hot outside and I was ready to puke and pass out from dizziness and feeling sick. They sat us down right away. I asked to use the restroom and they gave me the code for it. The restroom is actually outside the doors of the place restaurant. Not sure if its a community bathroom for the town center but it was no problem since it's so close to the entrance and no one else was occupying it. When I came back inside the server was super nice and explained the tablet use in ordering. We didn't need the help but I'm sure they do it with everyone in case it's their first time. It's a lot better then the one near Hawaii Kai which is super old school. Conveyor belt spinning around old sushi and no tablets to order your food there on the spot. They do have a conveyor belt but was only used to bring the food that was ready for the customer. Service was amazing, food was amazing and especially for the price. Parking can be stressful which is why we chose to park in the upstairs garage on top of Safeway. Just take the elevator closest to the restaurant down and walk on over is what I would suggest. But definitely cleanest and nicest Genki Sushi out of most. read more

They don't have the conveyor belt like they do in Ala Moana but we like this one better bc we will like the food is fresher and quicker here. On a Thursday night I ordered 3 items for takeout (Fried squid, Dynamite Spicy Tuna and Salmon Onion). I placed the order at 8:18pm and was told it would take 15 to 20 minutes. I did not receive my food until 8:57pm. If I knew it was going to take 39 minutes, I would've ate at somewhere else!!! Okay I know some may say that 39 minutes ain't thaaaaat long BUT what made it worse was that several people who ordered after me got their food before me and judging by the size of their bag, their order had more items. I also noticed a party of 4 adults were seated after I placed my order and they finished eating and left the restaurant before my takeout order was finished!!! The supervisor was aware that I was upset and that my order took extremely long and did give me a free black plate for my next visit but honestly I don't even feel like I'd come back after this experience, I just wanted to get a refund and leave. read more

I wanted to try the new location. Granted I have other places I like to eat for sushi but I wanted something cheap today. I love the new location! It's very clean, organized and the staff all round is INCREDIBLE! You don't hear people use terms like they do when serving or in general for that matter, normally you hear that kind of talk in 5 star restaurants or High in restaurants for that matter. That's awesome Genki! Granted it was fun growing up picking out the food you wanted on a conveyor belt, and ordering something if you don't see on the menu, but times have changed. Bit disappointed with this visit to genki sushi. We were charged for three items that we did not want. My sister's table ordered and received different items then the ones they wanted. Staff is always friendly. I really love to come here just for the spicy seared salmon it literally calls me every day. I just enjoy it. My old favorite was spicy tuna but, I've changed to this. We wandered in here for a casual lunch after picking up gear from the Snorkel Bob's down the street and getting a recommendation from one of the staff members. She wasn't joking - it's good sushi! The first thing we saw upon arriving was a picture menu, acting as sort of an "Idiot's Guide" to sushi. I will admit, I was doubtful. Upon looking around a little bit, you realize that's the general theme here.. It really is like another reviewer said so eloquently, "a somewhat "fast food" sushi experience, but much better." The menu had a relatively large range of items (for a chain of its kind), as well as a few things not on the menu. We noticed that everything on the conveyor belt looked fresh (surprisingly), but we didn't want to risk it, so we started with 1 plate from the belt (which quickly turned into 3) and ordered an additional 5 or so from the menu. What won me over was how neatly packed & nicely rolled everything was (I've had some pretty off experiences in California) as well as how fresh everything was (look Ma, no smell) - even though the things we ordered weren't doused in sauces or mayo. Everything was also quite inexpensive. While the interior of the place is just alright, our server was EXCELLENT. I've been racking my brain trying to remember his name.. such a sweet, friendly, and thoughtful man. He talked to us about the history of musubi in Hawai'i and told us that he'd been at Genki for as long as it's been around. I'm definitely a fan of this conveyor belt sushi chain--you'll find me here at least every other week, eating 4-6 plates of mayonnaise-infused, nori-wrapped, "localized" goodness. And Genki isn't going downhill--I just had a crappy one-time experience at the Ala Moana location. On every visit I gotta get the Spicy Ahi, Crab Mayo, and Scallop Mayo. The new Spicy Ahi bowl is very tasty. I'd get the Ikura (salmon roe) more often, but it's $3.75/plate! I'd rather "assemble" my own at home. With 7 branches on the island now, you can get cheap decent sushi anywhere. Yeah, even you faraway souls in Ewa Beach. Viva la conveyor belt! read more

After KuruKuru opened in Kahala Mall, I vowed to never return to Genki. There just really is no comparison in terms of quality and service. Unfortunately, I received a gift card to Genki and it took my BF and I two visits to use it up. The nigiri sushi tends to look very questionable (thin cuts and not fresh), so we didn't try any of those. The only items that are consistently okay, in my opinion: spicy tuna and the Dragon roll. I highly recommend ordering everything from the server - you never know how long each plate has been sitting on the line. We made the mistake of taking an order of karaage once, which was COLD and too salty. Most of the workers here are high schoolers more concerned with gossiping than servicing customers. The other night, I even had to stare down the sushi chef so he could flag down the servers to take our order (aka yell at them to break up their conversation). Management should do a clean up of their staff - it was pretty obvious that only 1/5 of the workers deserved to keep their jobs. Unless we get another gift card (please, no!) we will not be returning to Genki Sushi. read more

Genki's reviews seem to range from one end of the spectrum to the other end, for me it most certainly receives 4 stars for this location in particular. I love this Genki because they give me exactly what I want, its clean, always nice and cool and the employees are always very attentive and polite. I am a fan of their spicy tuna nigiri of course, something about it is very comforting and it has a taste that I find needing to be satisfied a couple of times a month. For a fast food sushi restaurant the soft shell crab maki is also done very well here, the only down side is that it fills me up leaving less room for the spicy tuna. I always try to go at odd hours, never at lunch or dinner time because the parking can get crazy. So for all the 1-3 star reviews keep in mind that there is a large following that appreciates what Genki offers us. read more

There are many options for sushi in our area. We come to Genki because it's within walking distance for us, it's fairly cheap, the kids like it and there's a pretty good menu. At my last visit here, I had the worst service and experience. First off, when we entered, it seemed like everyone working went to hide. When someone came out to greet us, I finally understood why. All the empty tables were dirty from the last customer and the workers didn't want to clean up! When they did clean it up, it wasn't even clean. They attempted to wipe the table down and sweep on the floor.... but it was STILL dirty. Or were they trying to make it look like they were cleaning up?! O.O The table still had fish eggs on the table, fish eyes on the menu, edamame next to the chopstick box, the floor was wet, and the booth chair was sticky. GROSSSSS!! There was a handful of workers on the floor, but it didn't seem like they were actually doing work. Seemed more like they were walking around making themselves look busy. Ate here last night, and it was not good. some of the sushi i tried tasted really old. the unagi in particular was really cold and felt like it'd been out too long. The rice and nori even tasted old on some of the pieces I selected. Liked their baked mussels, but that was about it. i think i'm spoiled by kuru kuru because of their large portions, overall better sushi quality, and much friendlier service. So, i'm probably ruined for all Genki. This is the second time I've tried the Kapahulu location and felt unfulfilled. I do think the location in Pearl City (Waiau) is better than this Genki and would give them a higher rating. A tip: The parking lot is small, so be prepared to wait for a stall, or look for street parking. We got lucky last night and someone was leaving as we arrived. In contrast to the Aina Haina and Ala Moana locations, which truly are the only ones I can comment on, the Kapahulu location has fresher and better tasting food, and much more attentive service. I food coma'd myself here lastnight cause I was in the aforementioned mood. Unagi, ahi, and ika cuts were all fresh and delicious. My favorite tempuras- ebi & da japanee pumpkin one, were crispy, hot, and yummy as usual. To top off all that savory goodness, I snagged one of their sweet little peanut butter cupcakes. Perfect!! I went here for dinner on a Friday. It was pretty crowded with a wait averaging about 30 minutes. They have a check-in sheet where you have to either provide your own pen or find a worker with a pen. The three stars are given as to some of the sushi on the sushi belt looked like it had been sitting there for awhile. We opted to try and order some fresh ones. I think they were under staffed as it took some time to flag down a waiter and place our order. The best dish we had was the seared garlic salmon. Everything else was OK.
