In summary: Great service, decent maki's, affordable prices, with "organic" / brown- wild rice options (for about 50 cents extra). Wouldn't call this an "authentic" sushi/nigiri place for 2 reasons: 1) the sushi rice did not taste right - it was missing the light, sweet and lightly vinegary signature of japanese-style sushi rice. 2) all of the waitstaff was chinese - leading us to believe it's chinese-owned Still, but not bad and kinda unique - with the different rice options. I stop here on the way home for sushi occasionally, because it's convenient, but I always regret it. It's very expensive for what it is, and what it is, isn't very good. The portion sizes are deceptively small on the menu, so by the time you order enough for a meal, you're thirty dollars in. The sushi itself you can do as good going to whole foods across the street. (Don't do that either) I can't speak to the rest of their menu as I haven't tried it. But if you're in the mood for sushi or sashimi just go over to Davis and go to Sugidama. Well, I had heard how great this place was, So I was intrigued to go and try. In Brookline where we have plenty of Sushi places, and two of the best. I had high expectations. I felt that the meal overall wasn't bad. It was quite tasty. Pros Nice atmosphere Tasty sushi. Nice portion*. (Depending on how much you eat. Considering two rolls and I'm usually set, it was plenty.) Cons I felt it was far overpriced for what it was. Stopped in the other day because it's in the area and I wanted some good sushi. The interior is nice... but not great. Hard wooden chairs and no booths. It didn't feel like a strip mall, but it didn't seem high end either. The service was ok. Not quite as attentive as I would like but not bad either. The food was good. We went a bit overboard with the eel, but that was my ordering problem. The real issue I had with the place is the price. It seemed very expensive for the decor, service and the food. Yes, I know it's organic... but we are talking about rice and fish right? Even the noodles seemed very expensive. The sushi is pretty good. I used to go there reasonably often, and their lunch specials are a great value. However, they recently offered a Yelp Deal of $25 for $50 worth of sushi. I bought one of these, and the restaurant refused to honor it when we went there for lunch. First they said we couldn't use them on the lunch menu, and had to order of the (much more expensive) dinner menu. Nowhere on the certificate did it state that. Then, when we tried to order, they informed us that the certificate could only be used for two people, and we had three in our party, so we couldn't use it. The certificate says "Multiple Certificates may be redeemed per table. limit 1 per 2 people." The server told us that means if we have three people and only one certificate, we could not use it. Not sure how they get that interpretation of the terms, but we ended up eating elsewhere. I'd normally give this place four stars, since their sushi is not the best around, but definitely better than average for the price point. However, they get minus three stars, since this is Yelp, and the restaurant failed to honor their own yelp deal. read more

Food is 4.5 star quality, but price seems WAY high. We went there with a $50 certificate, and after tax and tip we paid almost $40 on top of that. This was just two people, no alcohol, and three rolls each, which I don't think is a particularly gluttonous meal...good food, but we could pretty much never have afforded to eat it if paying full price. The loophole: order online and get takeout. If you order online, you can get a three-roll special for about $19, and then another small roll to get your order to $25...with online takeout, if you spend $25, you can get a free spicy tuna roll...so 5 rolls for about $25. I literally have ZERO complaints about this place. The most delicious, fresh sushi I've ever had. Honestly once you eat here you can never go back to "regular" sushi. They're organic and I've never been able to actually tastes freshness until I ate at genki ya. I recommend their salmon monster roll. It's to die for. Last weekend I found myself completely knocked on my behind by some horrible, sent straight from the depths of hell to destroy me, sickness. I was bed ridden for most of the weekend and had to cry out to be rotated so I wouldn't get bed sores. So, of course I did what any person would do. I holed up at my friends apartment and had her get me sushi and miso soup. All weekend. The first night we decided on this little place since I had flashes of remembered from the last time I frequented Trader Joes. Its in a pretty convenient location, and I had always heard good things about the one out in Brookline. So, order online, and pick up. Away we go to Sushi heaven! The sweet potato tempura roll is amazing. Squishy, just the way it should be. Theres nothing more infuriating than having to chew on a piece of seemingly raw sweet potato in the midst of maki goodness. Crazy roll, spicy mayo is spicy alright. But again, sickness, cleaned me right out. Shrimp tempura roll, avocado roll, all very solid choices. Nothing to really scream at the top of your lungs about, but really not bad at all. Miso soup = delicious. The second time we ordered just about the same thing. We had take out both nights so I can't leave a testimony to dining in, but the take out order was fast. The only big down fall? Its quite pricey for even a simple roll. I used to think sushi was a big splurg, only to be enjoyed on those special occasions. But since finding great (cheap) sushi, I've since changed my mind. This place isn't somewhere I should order from twice in one weekend, but its certainly tasty. And it sat quite well as I thought it was my last meal on my death bed. read more

Genki-YA! In my head that sounds like a soundbit from a Kung-fu flick, but in reality its pretty damn good sushi. I honestly don't make it over to that side of Cambridge much, but grabbed up the recent Yelp deal for Genki Ya, and gave it a shot. I was more than pleasantly surprised! Quality wise, I would put GY up with if not a little better than most of the sushi places in the Camber-ville area. Their tuna and salmon were spot on fresh and delicious. The night I went, I thought the yellow tail was decent, but not their tour de force (order your wacky maki accordingly). Really though their variety and quality put them in the upper deck of local sushi bars. Presentation/Service was also worth a least a few points for making our meal look like an exhibit (all be it a delicious one) from the ICA. I'll be honest. I'm KIND of a sucker for wacky shaped plates. I wish I had taken a picture BEFORE ravenously tearing away at my plate, but c'est la vie. All in all, I took a chance in a new sushi bar and will definitely be coming back for repeat gorging. Having tried most of the local places around town, I think you'll agree as well. read more

But at our last visit it did not seem to be as clean or as nice an experience, could it be new management? My daughter and I had an early lunch in Cambridge. The setting is small and compact but comfortable. We had lunch specials: sushi platter and three sushi rolls. Each came with a lovely hot miso soup and a lovely salad with an amazing dressing. We also had lots of hot green tea. Service was impeccable and the food was delicious. My boss treated me here on my last day of work. We all got lunch specials which were around the usual price that they are up here in MA. The space isn't very big but they fit as many tables as they possibly can. Service is average. Albeit it's crowded during lunch hours - I could hear anyone and everyone's conversation nearby - I stand by the fact that refilling water isn't that hard and when there are empty plates should be cleared; that's the bare minimum. However, they win when it comes to having fresh sushi. I wish I knew this place was closer to my internship sooner because I had heard of this place before and wanted to try it. Whenever I visit my brother in Arlington, we order from Genki Ya. The online ordering system is way easy and it allows us to specify NO SESAME for my nut-allergic 3 year old niece. I love their kimchi and tuna sashimi special, as well as the genki ya ichiban special. We got: 3 miso soups (eh, I've had better...) 1 salmon roll 1 scorpion roll 1 cuke/avocado roll 1 sweet potato tempura roll 1 genki ya ichiban special and 1 tuna sashimi + kimchi special All told, it came to about $60 bucks and they delivered it to our door, which I thought was pretty great. You may have noticed that we didn't get the most adventurous selection.... It's because of the three year old. And the budget. But I'd love to try some of their more exotic offerings. I had a yelp "groupon" and so I checked it out. I've since returned, so that means the place is decent. Most groupons don't inspire return visits. But then again, the return visit might be a factor of proximity to Trader Joes. I think the best strategy is to order rolls and special sushi "creations." The basic sashimi/nigiri is nothing to write home about. However, I REALLY dig the sweet potato maki. Prices are decent too. I love Genki Ya! I was very skeptical to order sushi delivery, but now I am completely addicted to it. Their website for ordering is great. You can actually customize all the rolls to your liking. I've ordered about 3 or 4 times and it has always come in a timely manner. I love the double spicy tuna roll (tip: add tempura bits to it...it's awesome). Also, the avocado salad is great. I've never gotten take-out before from the Brookline location, but the portion size and artistic flair did not disappoint in this format from Cambridge. Some really great sushi in the Cambridge/Alewife area where I would never expect to see it. They have a great selection of rolls and sashimi. I mostly go for their speciality rolls, some of my favorites were the sweet potato tempura roll, Volcano roll, and Spider Roll. Everything here is organic (whatever that really means) and they offer white, multigrain, or whole wheat rice on the rolls. The seaweed salad is also excellent. read more

The only sushi I didn't like was the salmon torched roll - the entire roll was cooked through and it didn't taste that great. The dessert sushi with fruit was also quite tasty. When I lived in Somerville I used to love coming to Genki Ya because of their great brown rice sushi. They have a huge menu with many different specialty rolls but I'm a simple sushi girl and I usually go for spicy California and tempura shrimp rolls. The ingredients always seemed really fresh and there is always parking because it is in a shopping center in Alewife (although that parking lot can be a zoo on Sundays). And my favorite part about Genki Ya is when they would bring us a little freebie dessert of red beans and rice pudding at the end of the meal. Yum! read more
