Things have gone SO DOWNHILL here that I have to write an update. First of all I had ordered takeout from them about three months ago and it took about 2 hours to arrive. Now the dining experience. The woman who appears to be the manager is the biggest bummer ever, she just looks up and grunts at you when you walk in even though we always smile and say hello. Way to welcome your customers. On one occasion my yellow tail tuna tasted like hot garbage. When asked how everything was by our server I said one piece tasted very very off and they should probably take it out of circulation for the evening. The manager came over and questioned me, like have I ever had this fish before etc. and I had to assure her that yes indeed I have and I know what it's supposed to taste like! She really grilled me and in the end only comped us for that one dish but seriously? It was pretty traumatic to taste something like that, ruined the entire meal for me. Not enough compensation. Last time we ate there I too, like reviewer Nat P. spent the rest of the evening with Mr. Charmin. I got really ill! Also, our server was a total downer, acted like she wanted to be anywhere but there which put quite a damper on things. Oh had I known what was to come. NEVER AGAIN! read more

I am a shameless fan of Americanized maki so I'll write about that. I was really excited to come here and gorge myself so I didn't eat anything that day until dinnertime at Genki Ya. At first, Genki Ya seems to be pricier than the cheap sushi places in the area (i.e., Hana Sushi) but that's because the rolls are actually a lot larger. The specialty rolls are 10-12 heaping pieces -- 1 specialty roll alone will be enough for dinner, and they run from $8-15 so you get your money's worth. They have a large selection of rolls with pictures to help you make your tough decision! I highly recommend the Doomsday roll ($15), which has everything fatty and rich in an Americanized sushi roll... avocado, cream cheese, tempura crust, BANANA... what's not to love? Beware that this roll is heavy and you should probably share it with someone, or not plan on walking for the next hour after eating it. They have many rolls with banana... might sound strange at first but it actually serves as a nice, sweet finish! I also got the caterpillar roll ($10) and they definitely don't skimp on the eel! The salads are also very large (and only $5) and generous with avocado (if you get the avocado or house salad). Very (almost overly) attentive service, clean, and fast. Perhaps this is a well-known fact but if you're driving, turn into the Whole Foods parking lot across the street, then take the underpass to the Trader Joe's parking lot (where Genki Ya is). You will bypass a ton of traffic... Came here on a Yelp Deal so everything was half price -- so we ended up not spending much at all! I just wish I'd gotten multiple Yelp Deals. Small place probably can sit around 40 guests. This is not a place for good authentic sushi. Bought a coupon from Yelp last week! I am a big fan of Organic Produce and love the idea of Organic Sushi. There are 5-6 sushi chef working there so you won't have to wait longer than 5-10 mins after you put in your order. A nosy place where I can hear my neighbors conversation. Pros Organic Fast Service Bigger portons than other sushi restuarants. Delicious sushi. We order out on weekends for their 3 roll special, which in itself would have a four star review for quality, but they make you pay "cash only" on weekends for the same deal that you can pay for with a credit card on weekdays. Also, it clearly says that it comes with fruit but when I inquired after not receiving fruit a few times they told me that they don't serve the fruit on weekends. Well, then why is fruit listed under the WEEKEND deal? Lastly, the woman who operates the cash register - consistently always the same woman - is always in a bad mood. This sushi, frankly, is outstanding. Ultra-fresh, reasonably priced, low delivery fee, available with brown rice -- really, really, really good. I've only had delivery, so I can't comment on ambiance or decor, but honestly, unless the place was legit dirty, I don't really think I'd care. Standouts were the AAC role (avo, asparagus and cuke -- i've only ever seen this offered at my Coolidge Corner favorite Gari, and it's an excellent combo), the amazingly fresh rainbow roll, and the spicy salmon avo, which was not overly mayo'y and had just the right amount of whatever those little crunchy bits are. Big thanks to Sarah G. for telling me about this place. Genki Ya is my new favorite sushi spot! We ordered online and had it delivered in about 30-40 mins. We ordered 4 rolls, a fresh summer roll (cucumber wrapped), and seaweed salad all for a bit over $30!! We also tried the brown rice option which I really enjoyed. The sushi was very fresh, everything was delicious, and the rolls were very well prepared! They even remembered all the extra sauces I asked for. The prices are very reasonable and the quality is amazing-- needless to say I will be back for more! read more

I think I've taken all of my out-of-town visitors this year here. I can't help it: I'm in love! I know I said I should propose -- I think I already have, and we've been on our honeymoon ever since. I just can't find a place that has fresher fish, better rice options (multi-grain purple rice all the way!), or more bang-for-your-buck lunch deals. I was just here this past weekend with one of my girlfriends, and she partook in the salmon teriyaki special, and I, in the maki special... I mean, c'mon, $11 for two rolls (sweet potato tempura is one of my MUST HAVES every time I'm here), soup, and salad? Yes, please! ($.50 extra per roll for brown or multi-grain rice, but, hey, so worth it!) And their miso soup is probably some of the best I've ever had, so every time I'm here -- lunch or not -- I try to order something off the menu that comes with the starter package. That salad dressing of theirs is also something. MmmmmMmmmmmm. If you're opting for any kind of maki roll, these are my faves: spicy ANYTHING (their triple roll special: tuna, salmon, yellowtail is incredible-- and their yellowtail, in particular, is out of this world!), anything + avocado (so fresh!), eel, and, as aforementioned, the sweet potato tempura roll. Okay, my mouth is watering just typing these out. They're all THAT good. Even their ginger and wasabi are über fresh. Sometimes, they'll bring out a "dessert" of sweet tapioca with a dollop of red bean, which is always welcome, even after a belly-busting meal of sushi. I went in expecting a lot more out of Genki-Ya....probably because I am a perfectionist and got uber excited when I read "vegan sushi" I guess Cambridge will always pale in comparison to the delicious vegan sushi rolls in downtown LA...... The menu selection is very wide, however, it is also mostly fried, battered, or loaded with tempura flakes. Therefore, the vegan selection is not extensive or different. They only use three fruits: mango, banana, and sweet potato....the last 2 are pre-fried. So I ordered the Color Vegetables Roll---the combination of mango, avocado, asparagus, carrots, cucumber and spinach is SINFUL! The best roll here by far! If you order with brown rice, the roll will be stuffed with purple. I also ordered the Ume Shiso Roll, which featured pickled plum, shiso leaf and cucumber.....Again, the combination with the purple brown rice was amazing, although it tasted as if there was too much vinegar in the roll. I ordered the Spicy Tuna Delight because of the cucumber roll. The tuna doesn't taste fresh and the spicy mayo is barely spicy. Skip it. The whole family (including me), we're vegetarian - and finding numerous creative & delicious vegetarian (even vegan) sushi options, is surprisingly hard to do. We went tonight, and the service was kind of slow (that with the slightly high prices, and the strip-mall atmosphere = deduct 1 star). The food, though, 5 stars. 1. Genki Vegetable Roll = Heaven on earth (slightly crunchy, lovely mix of sweet, salty, savory: sweet potato, banana, mushroom tempura, cream cheese) - $8.25 2. Honey Roll = Angels singing (delicious crunchy sweetness - something is carmelized in there - maybe the sweet potato tempura, with banana, cucumber, carrots, & cream cheese) - $5.95 3. Fruit Roll = Pretty good (Mango, banana, and avocado - very pleasant, and a reasonable palate cleanser/dessert) - $5.75 4. Genki Ya's sushi is decent, and I like that they offer a brown rice option. I really only order from them delivery, which is definitely convenient, but I'm going to echo some of the poor customer service comments. I ordered from them a few weeks ago and the delivery guy was so rude that I swore I was never going to order from them again. When he arrived he was screaming at me on the phone asking where I was (not in an "it's loud so I'm yelling" way, but in a "where the fuck are you" way). I could barely get a word in to tell him he was at the wrong building. No apology, no nothing. I did end up ordering from here a few weeks later because my craving for sushi was just that strong. I've been going to Genki Ya for the past couple years and would rate the quality of sushi as good, not great. The selection of maki rolls is also good; the usual combinations of tuna, salmon, shrimp, or crab, but nothing exotic. Tonight was different story... We split the sushi dinner and it was less than fresh. One piece tasted like sewage!! I had to run to the bathroom to spit it out!! I'm so disappointed. Holy deliciousness. I don't eat seafood, but love vegatrian rolls, and pretty much any appetizer/entree not involving fish. These were by far the best veggie rolls I've ever had, and trust me I've tried them at just about all the top sushi place in the Boston area. There are so many sushi places in the area, and for the most part they are all blah-blah-blah like this one. Same old spastic combinations of too many types of fish. Fish that's not especially high quality. There's nothing Japanese about it (not that sushi has to be created by pure-born Japanese only). So the sushi is two stars at best. I typically order here and recommend the place as I am local, however today I ordered delivery over an hour ago, when I called they told me it would take 40 minutes (I had placed the order 15min before), so I called back to inquire if I picked it up would it be faster? The lady on the phone was so rude, she told me to PAY ATTENTION, that it would be not 40min but an hour! She was yelling at me on the phone as of I'm a child. Delivery and customer service is terrible! I had a horrible experience ordering sushi from here. We were quoted a 20-30 min delivery time. Two hours, and multiple phone calls later, still no sushi. No real explanation, just stalling tactics. After I called to cancel (with a couple disgruntled dinner guests), the delivery guy showed up 5 min after. Despite numerous complaints, no discount, or apologies. Never ordering from them again. Previously I had dined in and ordered out several times. The waitress who listened to my phone call was really rude. 1. After I booked a lunch special, the lady told me that it was not enough. Then she immediately said, "Do you understand? If I were caught in this mind-f***ing traffic on a daily basis around Fresh Pond, I'd forgo dinner at home with the family, shotgun a few sake bombs, eat boat loads of raw fish, and drunkenly drive (with one eye opened) down Route 2 yelling "BONSAI Danielson!" as I walked through the front door to disapproving looks; everyday. Above and beyond being one of the only viable options in this area where you can get a decent meal, Genki Ya is a bastion of refuge for those concerned with how their food is being sourced. All natural and organic fish, now doesn't that sound delicious? You may be sitting there wondering "who's got time to stop here on the way home, dine by themselves, and show up home late?" No one's gonna fault you for thinking about your family, it's okay - they're (like) important and stuff. Genki's got you! Call ahead and get that takeout order to go; show those little brats what real fish looks like. I was lead here by a Yelp! deal. Not expecting much from a place located in a small strip mall from my short walk from the Alewife T station we were greeted but their host station is oddly in the back corner of the restaurant. They fit a lot of chairs in one place & it felt kinda cramped. The two women sitting next to me overpowered most of my table's conversations but the highlight of this establishment was the food. The sushi portion is generous & come from a sushi bar that is in plain sight. Every roll I saw produced was bigger & longer then the last. The sushi & sashimi platter is a good amount of food. Organic sushi. That's pretty cool on it's own. Then we get to the menu. Huge variety of options, almost all including pictures for the sushi-naive. I love that there are so many options with eel and eel sauce. Brown rice can be substituted on everything, and there are lots of fish-free or all cooked options. If you're into tempura you will love it. There are lots of tempura options (shrimp, sweet potato, etc.). The miso soup is pretty good. I'm not a huge fan of the pricier salmon soup. The volcano roll is a pile of fried tempura and seafood sushi. Interesting compromise if someone isn't thrilled with the typical sushi options. Prices are fair, but things are so beautiful on the menu that it's hard to get out of there for less than $20 a person, in my opinion. read more

I love that it's organic, I love that they have both brown and multi-grain rice, and i love that the green tea is Genmaicha (I think. Sure tastes like it.) The veggie Genki roll is fantastic. The ume shiso roll is unique but a whole order is too much zing for one person. Better to share. Genki is our go to sushi spot every Friday. We discovered them when they opened in Cambridge/Freshpond, and have never looked back. The freshness, portions, and servings are unsurpassed. Simply the biggest pieces of sashimi you will find in this price range. Seafood yaki, amaze. Spring rolls, current fave (salmon). Shrimp and veg tempura? Always fab. I never order a meal without the sashimi app, a total steal! My fave rolls are the crazy maki (shrimp tempura) and spicy scallop. Is the menu fancy? No, if you want that go to Oishii (where I was on a first name basis with the staff before I discovered Genki) or O Ya. Is it fresh, consistent and delicious, a resounding YES. We ordered online for months, and never went without the combo roll deal and free spicy tuna roll with orders over 30.00. We would gladly have paid for that roll but for free? Yes please! They now offer 10% back with online orders (kind of like points you can apply to an order). I have not tried to use any of our points yet but we do sorely miss the free roll. When you are on the go, place an order with their app. Always ready by the time you get there. Service is brisk and no nonsense. I wouldn't have it any other way. You want good sushi, good sushi they will give you. Don't ask for splenda, don't deviate and you will be rewarded. I have overpaid at the best sushi places in NYC, I have been to O-Ya, and when I want take out, or a nice lunch out, I go to Genki. I wouldn't consider anything else. Ever. read more

My go-to sushi place in the city! The fish is fresh and the portions are huge! Let me clarify, the sushi and sashimi combo makes Neptune god of the sea excited for dinner. I honestly couldn't finish my meal, and had to have my dinning companions help destroy the kraken. Also, as my litmus test for a good sushi place dictates, I tried their Uni nigiri, and it tastes like a bite of the ocean. Perfect. I would say don't waste your time with the maki because the sashimi is so good, but there are some real winners on this list. My favorites include the healthy ichiban with multi grain rice, salmon avocado, and sweet potato tempura. Also, between the two locations I prefer the one in Cambridge because the service is a lot better. read more

Genki Ya has been my go-to for when I'm craving some sushi. I usually order the sushi dinner, which consists of 10 pieces of nigiri (usually tuna, salmon, yellowtail, shrimp, and eel), some maki (California and spicy tuna), and their delicious miso soup. It's fresh, reasonably fast, and guaranteed to be good. I survived on this stuff when I was sick in bed with the flu, didn't want to cook, and couldn't eat anything containing dairy. Mmmm! read more

After a wonderful lunch experience at the Brookline location (I gave it 4 stars), I decided to try the Cambridge location of this organic sushi purveyor. The food was still of good quality and the prices reasonable, at least for the lunch specials, but it paled in comparison to my lunch at Brookline. For one, I found a small bone in one of my sashimi pieces, and the boneless ones didn't appear to be cut with the precision of an accomplished sushi chef. I guess the lunch shift is where the beginners hack away at the fish while learning the craft. As was pointed out to me before, the sushi rice isn't sticky enough - eating the bowl of white rice that came with the sashimi was difficult because it was hard to get more than 2 or 3 grains at a time onto my chopsticks. And while I loved the addition of enoki mushrooms in the miso soup, they had lost most of their flavor and consistency along the way. The miso itself was too hot upon arrival and not as flavorful as others I've had. Sometimes, getting the little things right makes all the difference. My next visit will probably be back in Brookline, hoping the great lunch I had there recently wasn't a fluke. read more

Yes, I am a fan of Genki Ya. I have had take out here and have also eaten in so I think I am ready for a review now. The food is extremely fresh and very delicious. They advertise themselves as being all-natural and organic and everything does indeed seem it. Presentation is lovely. Both times we really enjoyed everything we got. We were there on a cold day so got miso soup... it was tasty, not too salty and had a portion of enoki mushrooms in the soup which was a nice, original treat. The sushi is fantastic. I have gotten caterpillar rolls both times and they are delicious. I got sake sashimi and the cut of fish was extremely generous and so fresh and drool-enticing. I got a torched tuna which was also yummy. My husband is a kimchi addict so he had to order some and we both really enjoyed it- spicy and very flavorful. And he devoured the unagi dish he got. Genki Ya is in a new space so it is very clean and well maintained. . It is rather small and cozy and other patrons are seated very close to you. My only criticism of the site is that there is no vestibule or entry way... the door opens right onto the street and when it is a very cold day (as it was when I was there), you get hit with a blast of freezing air which can be uncomfortable. This review is specific to the $13 lunch special, which I cannot get enough of. If it were up to me, I'd be eating the special every single day. For only $13 you get three rolls, soup, and salad! One roll at Whole Foods or any sushi restaurant will run you that much easily! The lunch special must be ordered online and picked up at the store -- fine by me. Most of the fancier rolls are excluded from the lunch special but I am still very happy with my salmon/avocado, spicy tuna, and shrimp tempura rolls from Genki. Usually with miso soup I'll take it or leave it, but here it's truly a treat. Just the right amount of salt and I love the funky albino mushrooms they put in it. I stop here on the way home for sushi occasionally, because it's convenient, but I always regret it. It's very expensive for what it is, and what it is, isn't very good. The portion sizes are deceptively small on the menu, so by the time you order enough for a meal, you're thirty dollars in. The sushi itself you can do as good going to whole foods across the street. (Don't do that either) I can't speak to the rest of their menu as I haven't tried it. But if you're in the mood for sushi or sashimi just go over to Davis and go to Sugidama. I've been a fan of Genki-Ya since discovering it last year. It was great that they opened a branch in Cambridge, was very convenient for when I didn't want to make dinner or lunch, especially when the weather was bad. At any rate, I think they have begun to follow other restaurants that have relied on their "name" to get customers... the quality has definitely gone down hill lately. To be fair, let me say the quality of their delivery has gone down hill. On several of my past few deliveries, the food has been late and to my absolute disappointment, the nor wrapped around some of my maki has been soft and squishy... turns an otherwise wonderful dish to something out of a supermarket sushi section., I guess even the change over to plain brown paper bags has been a disappointment. I so enjoyed seeing the sushi guy come up my walkway with one of those wonderful green decorated bags, just knowing that some wonderful treats would be inside. I originally purchased the Yelp deal thinking it was the Brookline location, which I lived incredibly close to. When I found out it was the Cambridge restaurant, I had no one to blame but myself. I eventually made my way there to use my deal before I moved out of the east coast. What I ordered: 1) Volcano roll: my favorite of the night. It's a shrimp tempura maki covered in a spicy seafood salad, which includes baked scallop, kanikama, shrimp, mushrooms, tempura flakes, fish roe, cucumber and spicy mayo all mixed together. 2) Double Spicy Tuna roll: not bad, just a spicy tuna maki topped with more spicy tuna. 3) Triple Torch roll: I normally love torched anything, but this roll was lacking for me. I felt that the fish should have been cut thicker, rather than wider and thinner. Personally, I feel that torching ("searing") usually means there should be a browning or even blackening of the meat/fish. The resulting caramelized crust is very nice on the palette. Instead, it just tasted like cooked fish. 4) Super Dragon roll: I'm a sweet potato fan, but this roll had too much sweet potato for me. Maybe consider adding some cucumber in the maki to balance the heaviness of the sweet potato tempura. I felt that the flavors were overly simple for a maki priced at $12.95 + tax. It was just sweet potato tempura, covered in rice, topped with eel and avocado. Although ingredients were fresh, I generally love makis because you can put so many different ingredients together to complement each other. Good, but not amazing. I, honestly, don't think I've been completely wooed by Genki Ya. I've tried the Brookline location many times (under the influence of friends) and then I came to their new Cambridge location because of the Yelp deal. Although the sushi was above average, there's nothing that I am hooked to that would keep me coming back Additionally, in terms of location, this place was seriously difficult to get to. We couldn't turn into the lot that Genki Ya was in from the direction we were coming from. We had to drive right past it, make a round about, and get back to the right side of the road. It was such a hassle! It is a nice cute restaurant with wonderful waitstaff, but not very accessible for me. So this will probably be the first and last time we ever meet. read more

Ordered delivery from here last night so I can not speak to the ambiance or decor just the food and delivery process. The delivery wait wasn't too bad (about 40 min) considering that I ordered it after midnight! So many options to choose from! The fish was fresh but the portions small. Got the yelp deal, read some reviews (just cause I was curious) and off I went! I would actually say they get 4.5 stars, the .5 deduction being simply because some of their fancier rolls are a little pricey. BUT - I would say well worth it. Went with a friend on a Friday night around 8, wasn't too busy - just busy enough. Clean, comfortable, quiet, and very sweet and attentive wait staff. My only complaint is that it was FREEZING (a/c blasting) but my friend had a few hoodies in the car so it worked out ok. He ordered some cold sake which came in a cute little carafe, kept cold by a hole in the side with ice in it - it was very cool - I'd love to know where they go them. We started with the shumai which was perhaps slightly boring for the price, but totally fine. We then shared the genki ichiban, the alligator roll, and the torched salmon roll. The torched salmon roll was good - came with 8 large pieces. The alligator roll was the same (maybe 7 pieces?), and was really really really good. The genki ichiban kind of blew my socks off. I could have eaten 3 orders of those. All in all it was about $57 after tax with 3 rolls, shumai, and sake. Delicious! read more

Update: You can get the deal for dinner, but only if you order online. (I found this out when I called and asked - it was a little weird) They also automatically add a discount when you order online if you spend enough money. I got a sushi dinner with the bf with five rolls, salad and soup for a bit over $22! It's weird that they only give this discount with online ordering, but it is seriously worthwhile! read more

My boyfriend and I are sushi snobs and this is our go-to delivery sushi joint in Cambridge. Pros: * Delivery seems to be getting faster and faster (we live about a 5 minute walk from the law school and have gotten our order in 20 minutes [from online order form to door!]) * Generally tasty sushi (I only get sashimi and let me tell you -- their "touched" salmon (where by "touched" I'm fairly sure they mean "torched" ... though now Chris and I always ask each ofter if we'd like "touched" fish for dinner) is absolutely delicious. * Chris gets their sushi dinner and the fish is generally very good Cons: * All that said, there is some fluctuation in the salmon (the regular kind). Sometimes it's really flavorful and other times it's just not bad (you know how it is.... sort of flavorless but not nasty or anything) * Their prices definitely run a little high, especially given the so-so salmon I get from time to time. * I think you should get a salad included when you order a dinner (like the "sushi dinner'). Not a star deduction issue or anything, just saying... But nonetheless definitely worth trying -- especially if you want delivery! read more
