They are so easy to work with, so nice, very experienced, and are spot on with their timeline suggestions. Being the wedding couple, we didn't really get to sit down and savor the courses...but lucky for us, they ended up catering one of our friend's wedding and it was all that. This is a hidden gem! Their steamed custard buns are delicious! Their kung pao chicken is loaded with fresh veggies (carrots, celery, onions), chicken, and peanuts. HUGE servings! Excellent catering services. I have not yet dined in house but I have used them several times for work and have attended a wedding where Ginger Cafe did a full sit down dinner for the event. It was quite lovely. Favorites, so far, include the green bean chicken, curry tofu and the dim sum dishes. I was looking for a place that made decent wonton soup without ruining the broth and putting much of weird random vegetables that didn't make sense with the soup, and this place was perfect! The wontons were tasty, the broth wasn't too salty and had good flavor, they put diced mushrooms and bok choy which were perfect compliments to the soup. The price is slightly higher than I used to paying for a large size but hey finally I can get my wonton soup fix regularly at least. read more

The Garlic Friend Tilapia was amazing for someone who likes moderately spicy garlicky food. One of the better places I have been to in the South Bay. It's got a pretty peaceful vibe about it. Ordered Hong Kong Pan Fried Noodles well let's just say they have NO clue how to make this dish. It was nowhere near what Hong Kong Pan Fried Noodles . It was a clump of noodles that were not even fried sitting in broth. Very disappointed that if you are going offer something you should know how to make it. Will not be returning. Good customer service, beautiful restaurant interior, and good food at a decent price. During my first visit, I stopped by during lunchtime and ordered Chili Chicken ($10). The chicken was super juicy on the inside and had a nice crisp on the outside, and was covered in sweet garlic chili sauce. This dish came with a side of egg fried rice and a bowl of soup. I enjoyed the fluffy egg fried rice, but I wasn't in the mood for soup so I didn't taste it. For only $10, I received a tasty meal that I was barely able to finish. The waitress who served me was also really nice and gave me a few recommendations since I told her it was my first time eating at Ginger Cafe. Had brunch here on Sunday with friends and it was nice to sit outside on the small patio. Food was okay, not mind blowing as we shared the wor wonton to feed our congestion and it fell short...and cold. Soup should be piping hot and the pork inside the wontons were bland just like the broth. My friend had the BBQ pork buns and she seemed to really enjoy them although she kept asking me if I wanted one and I repeatedly declined. Was she trying to unload them on me? Hmmmmm, hard to tell as her order of 3 left one on the table. I had the spicy chicken and it tasted just like general tso with tapioca coated and fried pieces of white meat (yuck!) that ended up being overfried. It came with egg fried rice that tasted kinda old. On the bright side this dish was served hot hot hot even though it just tasted okay, again nothing earth shattering. We split the pandan dumplings, which my friend suggested as I'd never heard or tasted them before. The order of 3 pretty green kinda large portion dessert. I tried a tiny bite as they came out freshly made and I did not care for the warm sticky rice. If I have dessert, I do love me some mango sticky rice or the crispyness of a fried banana cooked off with an exotic flavored ice cream. The pandan did not do it for me. Service wise it was okay as on a nice sunny day we were the only customers on the patio and the parking lot never got full. Perhaps they were across the street at PF Changs? Overall, there are better places to eat and to spend your money. For $30 it was a bit steep as we did not order booze. No value here. read more

A nice place for Chinese food! I ordered eggplant and tofu as the main dish and egg custard buns as dessert. Eggplant and tofu was delicious. Also the serving was quite generous and enough for two people to eat. Custard buns were super cute! I think they were decent in taste but not something that I would order again. Initially I thought this café was a simple ordinary diner. But it turned to be a trendy Asian Fusion restaurant similar to P F Chang, which is also as luck would have it, located right across the street on El Camino Real and Mathilda Avenue. Tonsa tofu. Let's just get to the nitty gritty. Unfortunately, I was not impressed on the spicing or flavor of any of it. Tofu is not, and should never be, a star. It just doesn't have that glitz and glamour of eggplant or that "it factor" of tempeh. This is where these dishes fell flat. In fact, all dishes I felt were unflavored. They had oil, but not much flavor through sauces or spices. There were four chances to get the tofu right in dishes, and NONE hit it. My only real standout was the tofu salad where I liked the peanuts and crispy noodles. Ooooooh... it's so pretty inside! *____* Came here to have lunch while at work and I was amazed at how beautiful it was inside. The building doesn't look like much, but inside everything is so nicely designed with the perfect combination of colors. And plenty of windows to let the afternoon light in! I went for one of their lunch specials. All their specials come with soup, one dish and choice of white rice or egg fried rice. You can add a lunch salad for another $1. For my dish I chose the tamarind prawns for $10.50 (but their other lunch specials are less than that around $8). Wow! Even the plate layout looked pretty! It had tons of sweet and sour tamarind flavor. There was almost too much sauce for my rice. I also tasted my friends' Mongolian beef and crispy tofu in mandarin sauce. Both had tons of flavor! In fact, everything had tons of flavor! I hope it's not from using a lot of MSG. And for dessert I HAD to try the fried porcupine custard buns. They were just too cute! Don't let the 'Cafe' part of the Ginger Cafe's name fool you like it did my date and me tonight. We stopped into Ginger Cafe tonight while looking for some fast, easy dinner... we didn't get that. This is a nice, well-designed and decorated restaurant with higher-end entrees, dim sum, top-shelf alcohol and a decent looking wine selection. It's interior was so tranquil and nice, it reminded me of my favorite high-end fusion restaurant in Vegas, Little Buddah. Most of the food was pretty good, though not authentic and not as good as Little Buddah, or as pricey though! Since Dennis O has a good point about 'don't go to a fusion restaurant and expect authentic'... I'll bump my 3.5 star up to a 4 star review. This will even out the 3 star that my date will give... if he ever writes another dumb review that is. haha My Saigon Noodles were great though I have no idea why they were called that as they seemed a typical Chinese noodle dish. The shrimp, calamari and veggies were fresh and cooked well. The Dim Sum shu mai and shrimp dumplings were pretty good too, though not the best I've had. I wouldn't hesitate going back for them again if I was craving off-hours dim sum. The Viet spring roll and fried roll though... I'd skip them. Even the fish sauce that accompanied them was sweet and not NicMamish at all. haha Look at the white girl complain... So, this joint is a lil nicer and more expensive than I like on a typical dinner. Our bill came to about 50$ for 2 people... ouch. It would be fine if we were on a planned nice dinner out but just to stop by a 'cafe'... not so much. "Whoa," I thought as I opened the door, "It's PF Chang's lite!" Indeed, despite the modest rock wall exterior, the place is all gussied up inside with your usual PF Chang's giant Buddhas. (Except in this case they don't have room for the whole Buddha so there's a bunch of decapitated Buddha heads.) They even have a mini PF Chang's giant stone horse. Ginger Cafe is also across the street from PF Chang's so if you have a long wait at Changers you know where to go. The lunch specials ($7-$8) start with soup. Ours was a tom yum soup with ground meat (not sure what kind) and so much oil we barely touched it. One of our entrees was the Basil Chicken. Although the ingredients were good - white meat chicken, mushrooms, green onions, celery, carrots, bamboo shoots, Thai basil - the sauce was all wrong. It was a odd tasting yet subtle fish sauce that didn't compliment the basil at all. Halfway through our meal we put the Basil Chicken aside and focused on our winner of a dish, the Dry Sauteed String Bean Chicken. Although it suffered from too much oil (a common theme), there were loads of fresh string beans and nice white meat chicken. The sauce (other than the oil) was great and hoisin-y. I'd definitely go back for that. We were unimpressed by the service. We didn't see the server all that often. As a result the husband asked the busser (instead of the server) what meat was in the soup. He said he didn't know and didn't bother to go ask either. He did come by to fill our water glasses every 5 minutes though. Assigning stars to this place is tricky. I'd give 2 stars for the soup, 2 stars for the Basil Chicken, and 4 stars to the Dry Sauteed String Beans (if they made it with less oil I'd give it 5 stars). So that equals 3, even though I can't wait to try it again. Goal: To one day sit at the middle booth. It looks awesome. UPDATE: Got everything with less oil. Much better. The Kung Pao Chicken was really good (even though the meat was on the verge of being slightly sketch). The Potato Beef wasn't quite as good, and was a bit too peppery. UPDATE 2: Eggplant in Garlic Sauce is good, though the sauce is a little too sweet and applied with a heavy hand. The Mango Coconut Chicken tastes much better than in looks. I'm still ordering everything low salt, low oil which I think is the way to go. read more

We ordered xo fried rice, dim sum app platter (my fav) but the other noodle and chicken curry was just ok. It needed more something-something. The desserts were a bit better. We ordered fried bananas but it's more Americanized than a fried bananas at a Thai restaurant. It's basically an American round banana in a Filipino lumpia wrapper but presentation was nice in look. My original plan had been to finally go to Fu Lam Mum and try their dim sum, but the crazy lines outside on Mother's Day made me rethink my plans. Not having anywhere else in mind, I figured I'd drive along El Camino Real until something struck my fancy. That's when I saw the sign for Ginger Cafe. It was fairly quiet inside for a Sunday but the decor was nicer than I expected for a "cafe." Definitely reminiscent of PF Chang's and I expected similar Americanized fare. The menu was a peculiar hodge-podge of Thai (Tom Yum Gong soup, curries) and Chinese (Hot and Sour soup, Hong Kong fried noodles). For Sunday, they even had a dim sum menu, so I got to have some dim sum after all! Not expecting much, I ordered a sticky rice wrapped with lotus leaf and a porcupine custard dessert. We finished the order by trying the Braised E Noodle dish with shrimp ($12). The sticky rice was actually decent and much better than I expected from a place that wasn't doing the volume of any dim sum house. The porcupine custard dessert was another surprise and tasted delicious. It was wonderfully creative and a cute presentation (see pic). Finally, the braised E Noodle came. As expected, it was Americanized and mediocre. For me, the most disappointing part was that I was in the mood for e-fu noodles and the noodles that came were borderline e-fu type, despite the description. Rather than warm and fluffy, they were dry and chewy. If I had to guess, I would have said they were a different type of noodle altogether but I wasn't 100% sure. That's what you get for ordering a standard dim sum house staple (usually lobster or crab w/ dry or soup e-fu noodles). Since it was Mother's Day, they thew in a complimentary dessert and the service was all-around attentive, prompt and polite. I'm not sure where Ginger Cafe fits into the local food scene, but if they can find and strengthen their identity, perhaps they'll have a chance to stand out. Bo and Tuyen did an awesome job as our wedding caterer! Being Asian American, it can be bit challenging to figure out what food best accommodates all your guests. The family had requested to have Chinese banquet. My husband and I however, did not want the typical chinese wedding dinner, especially since we were having the wedding at a less traditional venue. In comes Ginger Cafe, with a Asian Fusion menu, that worked perfectly for us. Check out Randy F.'s pics for the actual food photos. The tasting was to die for and gets waived if you do go with them. They cooked the food at the venue, bringing their own kitchen. Most of the food came out hot and Bo made sure that my husband and I were actually eating. Besides the food, Bo was just so helpful during the planning process also! He had given us suggestions of what to do since he has worked at our venue prior. Ginger Cafe also did the ceremony/reception flip, table set-up, and complete clean up after the wedding was over and it was done very efficiently. Ginger Cafe is one of my favorite Chinese Restaurants in Sunnyvale. My work has catered from them on numerous occasions and all their items taste fresh and authentic. Being vegetarian, I love their pineapple fried rice, tofu and eggplant that's sauteed in a garlic sauce, and Singaporean noodles. My only criticism is that their tofu is a bit chewy and has not fully absorbed the flavor of the sauce. However, the food is still delicious. I'd definitely come back here again to try more of their offerings. read more

The little big buns definitely caught my attention to go to this place. We went on an early morning when opening so there wasn't a wait and made fresh! We ordered just the small dim sum platter that had lobster, crab and shrimp and pork dumplings. The main thing I came for, it's the little pig dumplings. They are filled with sweet egg custard and always one of my favorites to eat. I think I had high expectations of this place cause of the presentation. It's a cool gimic don't get me wrong but I will agree to others that have review this place about not being "authentic" the crab claw "stingray" dumpling was good, but only ate the filling. Again it's a gimic. It's cute don't get me wrong but the flavors are ... iffy. Definitely something new to what I've tasted within dim sum. I ended up just eating the filling than the dumpling bread. It's most likely something I won't order again. On the bright side the pig custard buns were good. I'd probably only come back for just that though. read more

Overall 4 stars. -1 star for the menu ingredients not matching what will be served. Examples: Steamed seafood dumplings sampler did not list that there is pork-based dumpling. Vegetarian chicken was actually pure seitan (vital wheat gluten)--this can be confusing because there are now products sold as vegetarian chicken that have the texture of chicken (pea protein). Please list the major ingredients so that visitors can reliably choose a dish without compromising dietary restrictions. read more

Not having gone out to dinner with the parents for awhile, my dad decided that tonight would be a good night since I happened to have today off of work (e-mail doesn't count I guess). He made the suggestion that we come try Ginger Cafe based upon the recommendation of a friend, so off we went. From the outside, this place has big green neon signs which allows it to stand out at night much better than its competitors. On the inside, it is very clean, quiet, and nicely designed. However I did find the center seating to be a little weird in that there was a big round couch with tables surrounding it. Which meant that if you were sitting there, you would literally be sitting next to a complete stranger if there was someone else at the table besides you. But because the place was virtually deserted on a Wednesday evening, we were not seated there. =) Most of the items on their menu appeared to be of the spicy variety and unfortunately, my mom was not a fan of spicy food which would have normally excluded a good 90% of what was on the menu. However, the waitress informed us that we could choose have any of the dishes prepared without peppers if we didn't want our food to be spicy. We started off the night with some Soft Shell Crab fresh rolls. Which consisted of fried soft shell crab, green leaves, bean sprouts, mint and rice noodles wrapped in rice paper. Despite the fact that it came served cut into pieces, each piece still held together very well. And when combined with the delicious sauce that it was served with, it was definitely pretty darn good. For the main course we decided to share a plate of beef fried rice and Shanghai Street chow fun. The plates were each very big and the two dishes together were easily big enough to feed all three of us. Although not the best fried rice/chow fun I've ever had, it was fairly tasty even by my parents' harsh standards. As a side dish we ordered the eggplant tofu seared in garlic sauce. Despite it being a little too much soy sauce used for my mom's liking, I found the tofu was very fresh and stir fried to perfection. The service was always very friendly and attentive. Although not an overall exceptionally memorable experience, I thought this place was A-OK! However I probably won't be back simply because of how far away it is from where I live. read more

I came here on a weekday for lunch after a doctors appointment, and got seated pretty quickly even though it was 12:30 during the middle of lunch hours. I absolutely loved their king oyster mushroom and tofu lunch special. It was seasoned well, healthy, filling, and I love the king oyster mushrooms. The pad Thai was good as well and in a generous portion. The boyfriend loved it. We both got our leftovers to go, basically half left.
