Tourist first time in Oahu - we stopped by here after hearing how popular the shrimp truck is on North Shore. Since we didn't have a car, we were able to take a walk from Ala Moana here. This is located on the second floor of the H Mart. The total for our two shrimp plates were about $40, which I think is a reasonable price in Hawaii. Overall, we thought it was OK. For the shrimp scampi, we added some lemon, salt, and pepper to enhance the flavor. It definitely made it better, but we feel like we've had better shrimp in the mainland. The hot and spicy was a very basic sauce. It did not feel like there was many spices in it. It truly just felt like hot sauce on shrimp. Overall, we wish we went to North Shore to try it from the food truck because the one here was alright. read more

We usually make the drive up to the North Shore just for Giovanni's shrimp truck, but we're so happy they now have a location much closer to Waikiki! This spot is tucked away on the 2nd floor of HMart, right next to a handful of other food stalls. It's easy to order, and there's a large seating area with plenty of tables and chairs. Honestly, I think I prefer this location--it's indoors, so no bugs to battle while you're getting your hands messy with that amazing garlicky shrimp. The shrimp tastes just as good as we remember from all our trips to the North Shore--savory, buttery, loaded with garlic, and cooked to perfection. And having a bathroom nearby is a nice bonus for a proper hand wash after digging in. Same great flavor, more convenient location. This will definitely be a regular stop for us now! read more

Garlic shrimp was overcooked and nothing special. There are better shrimp places in Waikiki. Maybe the one day I experienced Giovanni's, it was a bad cook day. However, I was not thrilled with the quality of the cooking and as a result the value I recieved on that day. The quality of the shrimp itself was good. Service was fine and the ambiance was expectedly decent for a take-out shoppe. I would eat there again but I would not bother to go out of my way for the place. read more

We had been to the truck at North Shores years ago and I remember that the worse part of it was the flies. Well, this location is definitely much much better since it is indoor. There's a restroom and the place is clean. There are several other eateries as well so you have options. We came here specially for their garlic butter shrimp. If you don't care much of garlic, this place isn't for you because the garlic will stay with you all day! We came on a Monday just before noon so it wasn't busy at all. Their portion is big, saying that there is a dozen of shrimps. But later we discovered that one of the plates (we ordered 2) only has 10 shrimps (we counted the tails). We could have say something but then we decided not. Why? Just didn't want to at the moment. I figured that it was probably a miscount. Hopefully it wasn't an intentional practice. I love Hawaiian-style Garlic Shrimp, so when I was asked what I wanted to eat for my last meal in Hawaii before returning home, the choice was obvious. I saw the crazy lines out of the food trucks out in Kahuku and got some serious fomo - so I was very happy to hear that they had a more accessible location. Located above H-Mart, this location is quiet and filled with open seats. I was surprised by how empty it all was, considering the hustle and bustle of the food trucks. We ordered their 3 portions of their famous shrimp scampi. To get straight to the point - I personally preferred Romy's execution of garlic shrimp over Giovanni's, mostly because of how mushy the plate was at Giovanni's. Giovanni's garlic-butter sauce is really liquidy, and the rice absorbs all of it... while it sounds good in smaller quantities, when there's too much liquid, the rice begins just become mush. The garlic bits were also cooked to the point where it's almost paste-like in texture, which didn't help the mush allegations. The shrimp at Giovanni's are also smaller than Romy's, but you get more shrimp as a result - but personally, we liked the larger, firmer shrimp at Romy's. That isn't to to say that it didn't taste good - the flavors were definitely there and we did enjoy our meal. Overall, it was pretty good - especially since it's much more conveniently located and the food came out much faster than Romy's. Definitely worth a try, especially if you don't want to make the trek out to north shore! read more

It was my first time trying Giovanni's infamous shrimp! This review is for the indoor location in downtown Honolulu (Kakaako), tucked away on the second floor of Hmart. Unlike their food trucks in Haleiwa and Kahuku, this spot had no wait at all! It's such a hidden gem! We ordered at the register with the nice cashier and the food came out incredibly fast and was warm when it hit the table. We ordered the scampi. The garlic flavor was bold but not overwhelming. The shrimp was tender and cooked well, you could eat it with or without the shell. Every bite was garlicky, buttery, but just a bit too salty. This location is a convenient option to avoid the long lines at their trucks. I'd recommend stopping by if you're in the area and get the scampi with spicy sauce on the side! Love this little food hall above the H Mart in downtown Honolulu. It's a very basic hall with small food stalls along the walls. This is a very convenient place to get garlic shrimp without having to drive all the way out to Kahuku. While it loses it's charm being in a non-descript food hall instead of outside in Kahuku, the garlic shrimp over rice is almost as good. They also had a garlic dog for those that don't just want shrimp and my wife loved it. Always love coming here for the garlic shrimp! There's a lot of seats but it does get full during lunch hour especially on weekends so brunch time is perfect. Food is perfectly seasoned with a generous portion of shrimp and garlic on the rice as well. There's wet wipes available to wipe your hands after eating, but if your hands are still sticky then there's a restroom to fully wash your hands. Tons of parking at their parking lot but it does get crowded over the weekend. They don't have togo boxes. They'll just cover up the plate with another plate and wrap it with foil and put that in a bag for you. This place was always one of my favorites when old make a North Shore trip. I enjoy this town location in Kakaako! Giovanni is located at the Korean supermarket Hmart on the second floor in the food court at Kakaako. You can get a parking validation for eating here or shopping at Hmart. It's so nice to not have to drive to the North shore for some Giovanni's. My favorite and the most popular is the garlic shrimp scampi w garlic on the rice. People say you can make this at home yourself but it's nice to eat out sometimes. Bring some gum or a mint because you'll smell like garlic all day. I also enjoy the side hot sauce. The place was filled with Japanese tourists when i went on a weekday, it's nice to see this place with business since it's kinda isolated upstairs of Hmart. There's a parking structure behind the H-Mart or you can try your luck with street parking. The shrimp is just as good as the food truck. I've tried the scampi (the best!), hot & spicy and lemon/butter. I personally like the scampi the best because it's full of flavor. This place is amazing! I had the original Giovanni's food truck last time I was in Hawaii but that had huge lines. This location has online ordering and it's so easy to drop by and pick it up! The shrimp is exactly the same - absolutely delicious. You get 12 huge shrimp and two huge scoops of garlic rice. Honestly, it's not a bad price at all for a seafood plate in Hawaii. Must Go. I almost skipped it despite my friend's recommendation. The shrimps were big and plump, with the perfect amount of garlic seasoning over oily rice, yum. Not an everyday meal (butter/grease) but a must try. I sat down to try one shrimp bc I wasn't hungry but couldn't stop until I ate half the plate. Lots of shrimps on that one plate, probably 10-15? You will use your fingers and it will get messy but that's part of the experience. I was glad to see the shrimps weren't deep fried but sautéed. Located a few miles off Downtown Waikiki, right above HMart in the food hall. Scampi Shrimp Plate ($17.50): Olive oil, garlic, lemon butter sauce panfried with a dozen shrimps - served alongside 2 scoops of rice topped with a little more garlic sauce. I remember the garlic sauce being more garlicky in flavor which I felt was lacking this time around. Shrimp is made easy to peel. Garlic Dog ($5): I've never seen this item offered at the food truck prior so decided to try it out in two variations - one in the bun and one with rice. It would have been nice if the bun was toasted or a sweet roll bun instead. Just an average all beef hot dog, nothing special but it is a good price. Cashier was friendly and welcoming. On my 67 years on earth, I had never sampled Giovannis garlic shrimp plate...until now. I was missing out all these years!!! This location in the SALT area and above H-MART is very convenient. Street parking is good and they validate parking for the 440 Keawe building next door. On to the food... They put an intimidating amount of garlic butter sauce on their shrimp. Talking about bad breath for days... But then you taste the sauce with the shrimp and a bite of tice and somehow everything balances out. A squeeze of lemon helps cut the richness, and it helps that the sauce isn't overly salty, either. There's enough for two people to share. I think we got 10 or 12 shrimp. (We ate too fast to bother counting.) It's a food court so there's a casual vibe here. All in all a great meal at an affordable price. read more

On day 7 of 9 of my vacation on Oahu, I drove around the island coast starting from Waikiki. My youngest son recommended I stop at Giovanni's Shrimp Truck when got to the North Shore. When I arrived at the North Shore, I stopped at Giovanni' Shrimp Truck. After viewing the menu, I decided I wanted to try the shrimp scampi (garlic shrimp) and the spicy shrimp. So I asked if I could order 1/2 of each on one plate. I was told no, but I could order 1/2 order plates of each. Because I didn't not want two (scampi & spicy shrimp) 1/2 order plates, I ordered the shrimp scampi with one scoop (full order comes with 2 scoops of rice; that's too much rice for me) of rice & two hot sauce on the side to go. When I go back to my hotel in Kapolei, I prepared my shrimp scampi to eat by removing the shrimp shells, then adding the shrimp to the 1/2 of the one scoop of rice with hot sauce which I nuked for a minute or so. I then squeezed some lemon juice on the dish. The rice, shrimp and hot sauce was a buttery greasy delicious dish. Best meal I had so far for this trip. Thanks Giovanni. PS: I hope in the future you can be flexible with 1/2 / 1/2 on one plate, especially for solo dinners. If not, oh well. read more

We got the scampi shrimp, which is what they're known for! It was a bit underwhelming, the flavor of the shrimp felt one dimensional, just garlic and butter. Had to see what the hype was all about. Now, this place was super tricky to find, but def worth trying! It is upstairs of a small shopping mart in the "cafeteria".
