After being treated rudely by a breakfast place a few doors down, we decided to come here instead. Best Huevos rancheros I've ever had! The staff were so sweet and seated us immediately. First time here, posting this review may not be a good idea.... Down the block the line for Petes was crazy, the wait here was zero! Service spot on, food hot, fresh, quick and delicious! Eggs Benedict, pancakes, omelette and chiquillas, couldn't be better! (And now there's a line, so maybe getting here early...) And we finally have a local restaurant that our parents even like! Portions are large for breakfast, and service is pretty fast. Try to get a seat on the small patio in front, the outdoor area is more comfortable than the indoor dining room. Ran out of mimosa glasses and said the owner was out getting more. I couldn't order a mimosa until he came back. I asked for a mimosa in a different glass and our waitress said that would take too long because she had to measure it out. Food took 40 minutes to come out and we had to flag down our waitress to get water and coffee filled. Heard about this place from a friend who's from Ventura. Awesome recommendation! Their banana bread is to die for. It comes out as a hot appetizer. A little bit of butter and nibble it with your coffee and you will be in heaven. Their coffee was really good and I had about 5 cups. I had a chorizo skillet with their breakfast potatoes that was really good. My wife had a sausage spinach and mushroom quiches that was huge. My kids loved their French toast and sausage. My mother-in-law had a sausage scramble with spinach, tomato, and avocado. The only problem was that they set the platter full of drinks on the side of the table where the toddlers were and the younger one tried to spill everything. Also we had to ask for straws for the kids drinks. They came in coffee cups with a supper top. Didn't really work for my 1 year old. I would recommend anyone. I would definitely go back. read more

I really liked the breakfast here - I got the chorizo breakfast scramble with a biscuit - it came out quickly and was an ample amount of food. However there is a surcharge for using credit cards which was not mentioned to us at all. This should have been communicated prior to us paying either cash or credit. Golden Egg is our favorite breakfast spot, and one of Ventura's best-kept secrets. It's right around the corner from our apartment and right down the street from Pete's. While Pete's is always packed with a long wait, you always get seated right away at Golden Egg Cafe. The service is always friendly and the food is always delicious. My favorite thing to order is the chicken and waffles because I can never decide if I want sweet or savory in the morning. My boyfriend raves about the scrambles. My hubby and I had a morning date so instead of going to our usual I decided to try a new place. Boy did it pay off! The Golden Egg is wonderful! I got French Toast w/bacon and hubby got a skillet and all were very good!! The next day I just had to take my mom. I tried the banana bread (which was amazing). All I have to say is: WOW! This is definitely going to be my new goto breakfast spot in Ventura County. I'll agree with others that Pete's was ridiculously busy a few doors down and this one was no waiting. The menu is quite varied and took me forever to decide what I wanted and in the end, I picked a simple breakfast with two eggs, a biscuit, hash browns and added a bowl of fruit (or is it a "cup of"?) and country gravy on the side for my biscuit. When you go to a new restaurant, you have no idea what portion sizes look like. Sure, you can look at Yelp photos but even those don't really have a scale. You can guess but I've found that the plates were small, or abnormally large so you still don't have any idea. All I have to say is that the cup/bowl of fruit was enormous! I expected a few pieces, but was greeted with almost a half-plate of fruit. I have to say the same thing about that biscuit. Not lemme tell ya, I'm a southern girl and was raised on biscuits. I've had the best of the best biscuits in the world and there is no way I would have ever believed that I could find a biscuit of true southern quality in California of all places. Dang that thing was light, fluffy and the size of softball! It was huge! It was one of the best ever lovin' biscuits I've just about ever had. The sausage gravy went great with it. Needless to say, I ate way too much. I left so full that I couldn't eat the rest of the day. It was just so good I had to finish it. If I had to list a con, it would probably be the coffee. It didn't taste consistent and I like a rich bean flavor. I don't know what it was, but it tasted kind of drip coffee-ish. Outside of that though, everything was fabulous and the mimosa was a lot of MIM! I was quite relaxed by the time I left. ;) Oh and they're great for lunch too. Like many of us, I'd probably gone to Pete's many times, and enjoyed it, while wondering about that place a couple doors west. Finally, on the recommendation of a friend, I tried the Golden Egg out. How bad could it be? Ventura (county) is blessed with many breakfast- and lunch places, most of good quality and all pretty much interchangeable save for details like location, some menu items (why I like the Cajun Kitchen so much) and so on. Other than location, the main distinction of the Golden Egg -- at least when I was there -- was that everybody was down the street at Pete's, giving me a lot of breathing room. The menus are similar: eggs, sandwiches, omelets, scrambles...even chicken-fried steak. The Golden Egg's selection of pancakes, Belgian waffles and French toast may be wider than the norm, and the prices perhaps a bit - if not significantly -- lower. (In response to an earlier review: nobody mentioned "real" maple syrup; there was a bottle of Mrs. Butterworth's on each table, along with hot sauce, jelly packets, etc.) In brief (too late!), I liked the food a lot; the server couldn't have been nicer or more attentive; and the Golden Egg is definitely on my list. A few years ago we tried this place and the banana bread was bone dry so we had avoided it all this time, that was until today. We thought we should give it a second chance. Boy were we wrong. We put our name on the list with three parties of 2 ahead of us. No biggie, on a beautiful Saturday morning around 10:00 a wait had to be expected. Except, we noticed that couples kept coming in behind us and were being seated right away. It wasn't until I checked the list with the manager present that she said that we were next. After my husband's 3 cups of coffee, my 2 iced teas an hour after being seated and still no food, my husband decided to throw a $5 on the table and we high-tailed it out of there. The icing on the nonexistent cake was when a couple who had been seated after us ordered got their food and paid all before we got ours.  It felt good to get up from the table and walk out, right down the street to Jim & Rob's Fresh Grill where we scarfed some scrumptious breakfast burritos that were fast, fresh and delicious. read more

Excellent breakfast! We were visiting family for holidays and had planned to go to Pete's Breakfast House which was closed. The Golden Egg Cafe is super close and we decided to give it a try based on Yelp reviews. The service was great and the food fantastic. Coffee - seriously good Bacon - perfect (ordered extra crispy) Banana bread - moist and flavorful Potatoes - very good Pancakes - great Omelette - very good One suggestion: lose the orange peel garnish, it made some of the potatoes taste like orange zest. Ok, I have time to update this review now that I am back home. We waited over 45 minutes to share one order of a scramble with a bisquit & gravy ($1.00 extra for gravy, found out at on check), and some potatoes. We kept asking for our food & they kept saying its coming. I wanted to pay for coffee & leave. It was not worth the wait The final 5 min & after asking 2 more people, our food finally came out & we split the plate up. Very small serving of scrambled eggs with spinach, cheese & a little avacado on top. During the wait I had to keep asking for more coffee. We came really late for breakfast, about 1 pm, & most people got up & left after we ordered, so they were not busy, but they just took forever to bring out orders for the few remaining tables around us. I don't know what is wrong with their cook, but he is inept. Our waiter was a dude with dark hair, thin, (I don't know his name), who had an attitude from the start. When we asked for our check, when the food was delivered, he said sure & then didn't bring it for another 10 min. At that time he poked me on the shoulder & said something about it being the smallest check! cause we don't like to overeat (two women) & like to split breakfasts to be more healthy. So, I think he punished us for trying to split a meal. We go out for breakfast a lot in other locations & have never had rude treatment like this. I also thought it was odd that he actually touched me on the shoulder. Anyway I gave him about a 50cent tip Just because I didn't want to wait for that change. They need some more good breakfast restaurants in Oxnard / Ventura. They are overly crowded and so sellers must feel they can treat customers this way. Came here after reading that the wait was shorter than Pete's down the street. We didn't have to wait that long for a table, about 20 mins for a party of 6. Not bad at all for late Sunday morning. The service was really slow though. I get it's a leisurely beach town, but it was probably about an hour from when we sat to when we started eating. The food itself was good. Great portions of good breakfast. I got the 3 eggs with bacon and they give you some hefty crunchy slices of bacon. Yum. The hash browns are served really crunchy, and I opted for the biscuit because it was (as promised) as big as both my fists and deliciously fluffy. Okay, So I went last weekend and despite reading some bad reviews, this place was really great. Especially considering there is a breakfast place about 20 feet away that had a line out the door, which is something I absolutely detest on weekends when I just want to go out for breakfast or brunch and be able to eat something right away because I am usually starving and saving myself for some beautiful pancakes or french toast. Well, this place definitely satisfied that requirement. We were sat right away and served promptly as well, and even told by other customers that the place down the street was not that great compared to the Golden Egg. Woohoo! As for the food, yes the hash browns were kind of salty but I actually like that. The scramble was super awesome and so was the french toast with real maple syrup. As always I did not try the juice and I recommend to everyone that you never drink orange juice at any restaurant unless it comes from an actual juicer.
