We were celebrating our anniversary so we splurged and ordered the fillet mignon. Cooked perfectly (and one of the few places i have been to that didn't complain when i wanted it medium well!). We also got the bourbon (?) caramel bread pudding for dessert. It was fantastic! We were from out of town - and needed an uber back to our hotel. After two Lyft drivers dropped us, "Lisa" who works there, drove us back- first giving us a driving tour pointing out president Ford's birthplace, Buffet's home, and the Joslyn castle and art museum. I've been here twice on travel. First time I ordered the Cowboy steak (28oz) med rare, and it came out about 70% blue in the middle. Had to have it re-fired. Pretty bad for a steak house, and never as good as a properly prepared steak cooked once. Second time I went excited since I figured the first time was a fluke, so I ordered the 24oz porterhouse, med rare. SAME THING again. Not quite as comically undercooked as the first one, but not far off. For a steakhouse that's as many chances as a steak house is going to get. Gorat's is an Omaha legend! I've been to Gorat's a few times, and the charm just can't be beat. Servers are the friendliest, and the food is solid to match. The filet is my personal favorite, along with their famous onion rings and hash browns. Recently, I was able to stop by for happy hour. $4 Old Fashioned drinks and $5 Steak Bites? Best value in the city. Gorat's is not your urbane downtown chop house. You'll figure that out when you can't find the valet. It's on a completely different level. They did a great job and it wasn't over or under done - just right. The baked potato was ok, it was slightly under cooked and still decently hard which I didn't love, and it wasn't super hot either. We were visiting from out of state for our kids baseball tournament and heard nothing but great things about this place. Unfortunately, our experience was not what we expected. We had a party of 10 as walk-ins. The restaurant wasn't full by any means but we were turned down and told to come back in an hour. After speaking with the hostess, they decided to seat us in the back by the bar area, which we found odd because there was plenty of seating in the restaurant. We did get our drinks and placed our orders in a timely manner by the bar tender (he was great), but it took over an hour and a half to get our food. Meanwhile, groups that arrived after us received their meals before us. After finally receiving our meals, we were only given 3 steak knives for the 9 steaks that were ordered from our group. We were told that they ran out of steak knives and that we should use our butter knives to cut our steaks. How do you run out of steak knives at a well established steakhouse?? Unacceptable!!! After trying to cut our steak with a butter, knife and complaining to speak to the manager, she finally came around to offer us some knives and didn't seem to offer us any apology. Steak is not the only treat here--various pasta dishes, seafood and country fried steak make it perfect for large groups. But steak is why we came. Began by trying three appetizers--two are winners, the spinach dip and especially the toasted ravioli. Large pieces perfectly cooked and a filling tasty marinara sauce. Spinach dip is better than most, with salty chips being perfect foils to the cocktails (a mule and Old fashioned, no complaints on either). The weak link was the o ion rings--absolutely no reason they cannot be cooked crisp and the batter was thin but bland. Skip those. No complaints at all about the filet--cooked a perfect medium rare. The mashed potatoes could be better whipped, a bit lumpy. The peppercorn NY strip was another perfect medium rare. Hash browns, always a winner. A Rutherford Cabernet complemented the strip oh so nicely. Love the place for its laid back feel--it is what it is, a Central Ave place not the expense account-centered warehouse district. My husband took me here for Valentines Day. They did have a special valentines menu but I believe what we ordered is on their typical menu. I don't have a single complaint. Everything was delicious. We started off with bruschetta, I had a glass of champagne. We both got side salads (their ranch is delicious) then my husband got a ribeye, I got the grilled whiskey ribeye with sautéed mushrooms. And the steaks came with a baked potato which we chose to have loaded. They didn't ask us how we wanted our steaks cooked and that didn't occur to me until just before our food arrived. I enjoyed this experience. I think they were generous with their salt and is the only reason they got a 4 and not a 5. Server was fantastic. He did go above and beyond. We had the crab cake appetizers which is huge and had a lot of celery flavor in it. The crab cakes had a very crispy edge, delightful. The pork chops were fantastic with a perfect sear. Cauliflower that came with were Golden brown but very salty. The compote had a lot of allspice. The filet with whiskey glaze was perfectly cooked medium well. I was a member in a large party Saturday evening and ordered a Canadian walleye meal. To begin, my first bite was cold, the baked potato was ordered as butter only and came with a large pile of sour cream which I didn't realize until I started eating it. It was so dark in there it looked liked whipped butter. The broccoli was not steamed enough to even cut. While all this was not appealing, as I continued to eat the fish in a tasty wine sauce, I couldn't even continue because it was so full of bones. I don't know where their filets were from, but dad and I used to filet walleye and not a single bone was found. As I write this, I will not be going back. I don't recommend! Unfortunately, I talked to two of my brothers and two sister-in-law into having dinner at Gorats on a Tuesday evening. The restaurant wasn't busy. Please be aware before you go that everything on the menu is à la cart! If you want that small dinner salad, that's an additional three dollars for a very small salad. Plus if you use a credit card your charged an extra three dollar charge! So bring plenty of cash. I ordered a medium rare New York strip 14 ounce which came just under medium short of the medium rare. I wasn't going to argue with the testy waitress anymore. For the cost of the steak $44 it was too much fat and gristle for $44 steak. At this point I was not going to fight with my server who has been there since 1970 or something because I was not going to win. A good server will pave the arrival of the salads and main course so they don't overlap but that was not the case on Tuesday night. Salads not finished and out came the main course. I was so angry!!! The whole meal was rushed by the server, which is poor Service, by Gorats! I will never be back to Gorats. So this is Warren Buffett's favorite steakhouse. Well being that I was here for business it seemed like a logical place to check out. What I can say is that the service here is great. The folks are very nice and they do a fantastic job of checking in on you and making you feel very welcome. Now the food ... well that's a different story. I ordered the T-Bone which is supposedly WB's favorite steak. Unfortunately I am pretty sure I can personally cook a way better slab of meat than what they served up here. The steak itself was not flavorful and was very rubbery. Even the garlic butter garnish did very little to improve the flavor of the steak. All in all it was extremely disappointing. As for the other dishes, the salmon was fine. The fried parsely was actually kind of disgusting. It tasted basically like "fried stuff". The best part of the meal was actually the onion rings. It was relatively tasty and flaky. The root beer float was not a great choice either. It was average at best. Unfortunately I wished the food was as good as the excellent service. This place definitely needs to up its food game in a variety of ways. However, I did really enjoy the ambiance and the friendly vibe of the entire joint. read more

I went with the 12oz whiskey ribeye with mashed potatoes and my companion ordered the linguine basilico. The ribeye was very good, I liked the flavor of the sauce, it was very different from other steaks I have had before. The mashed potatoes were delicious, just a bit heavy. The linguine was a bit underwhelming (as expected for a steakhouse). The basil flavor was barely there and there was too much oil. I hate giving Gorat's this three star because I love the decor, ambiance and the fact our national treasure Warren Buffet states that this is his favorite steak. I ordered the T-bone medium rare with a nice array of sides. Loaded bake potato, Mushrooms, and a side of Shrimp. The steak was over cooked and really not at the meat quality I was expecting. This is a $41 steak and it was more like a $10 T-bone offered from a casino in old Las Vegas. I was very disappointed. The loaded bake potato was mediocre almost like it was pre-prepared and just sitting in a warmer for an hour or two. The mushrooms felt canned but were fine. The brute spot was the small $3 each shrimp I ordered. Background- Omaha steaks you can order online are Fire. They are really good. I figured eating in Omaha at a billionaires favorite steakhouse I would get at least a Ruth's Chris or Morton's or Longhorns quality steak. It could have been a bad day or steak supply short. Yes, it was done but unusual for me to see compared to others that have a char on the outside, again, for me. Taste just wasn't there. Didn't seem to be seasoned. I hadn't had prime rib in over a year and was really jonesing for one while visiting my sister in Omaha. She said the best place was downtown and figure it would be $65. I really wasn't wanting to drive downtown and she recommended this more local eatery. We secured reservations and proceeded to the place. Tons of parking, no hassles there. Once inside noticed that a vocalist and band were in bar, and sound was drifting into dining area. Asked hostess for the quietest area, she pointed out a spot and also suggested Warren Buffet's private dining roo--"He's not coming in tonight!" It was great! small room with just a table and two chairs, window so staff could check up on needs when the pocket door was closed--we left it open, however. Okay, the drinks and salads were not special, but certainly adequate. The bread was good and plentiful. The service was just right, attentive but not overbearing. But the prime rib was sublime. I can't imagine any prime rib being better in any way, at any price. Had a baked potato with sour cream and butter and it was perfect accompaniment. Thoroughly enjoyed this place. We took a chance on not making a reservation and we sat at the bar. Worked well in our favor a jazz band was playing so it was perfect. I got the whiskey ribeye with blue cheese and it was so amazing. My husband originally ordered the bison ribeye but a snafu happened and he got the sirloin instead. We are not super high maintenance so he ate that instead and that did not disappoint. Blessing in disguise it was so good. The appetizer was the star of the show. We go the shrimp and scallops. So delicious. The bartenders were great. Made sure we were taken care of even though it was busy. Even gave us some of the leftover grasshopper shakes they were making. My husband had a craving for prime rib, and since were from out of town, his sister said we could go downtown and pay about 65 bucks at a very nice place. We didn't wish to go to downtown Omaha, so he said is there anything closer. She said absolutely, Gratz is about three minutes from here. We couldn't of been happier with our choice!
