Arguably the best dim sum place in AZ! With dim sum staples like har gow, shumai, chicken feet, gai lan, etc., this place simply slaps. If you go around lunch on Sunday, be prepared for a 20-30 minute wait and a slightly noisier restaurant experience. However if you go Saturday, the wait isn't too bad and vibe is a little more mellow. Once you get in and are seated, be ready to grab your favorite dim sum dishes as the carts go by fast and furiously. If you're looking for China Town like, cuisine and Dim Sum, this is your place. Dim Sum is served daily but only from 11 AM to 3 PM. We ordered the spicy pork chops, salt & pepper calamari, half roast duck and suckling roast pork. The food is served family style and all of the portions were pretty big. Each dish was also fairly priced. The restaurant decors are out dated and building inside appears older. The restrooms, although were clean was also old and could use an update. My family and I have been wanting to try this place for a few months, now, but our schedule hasn't allowed us to make the trip. Today, it finally happened, and we were severely disappointed. It was very busy, which was fine, and a 25 minute wait isn't bad at all. We had never been to Dim Sum before and were highly entertained watching the carts go by filled with different foods. Because of the table size and large groups, I thought these were whole orders being brought out but I was incorrect. We had our number called and the woman told us "Go sit at the very last table". So we proceeded, a little confused, towards the last table- which was being bussed. We waited, standing, for a moment while our table was being cleaned and then sat down. Immediately after sitting, a lady with one of the carts came over and motioned to the plates on the cart; I tried to let her know that it was our first time and we were unsure about the process. She walked away. I decided to go up to the front just to ask about the process and I was lead back and told that I could order from the menu, choose the Dim Sum plates, or do a combo of both. We mentioned that we specifically came for the Dim Sum and he said that we just point to the plates and they give them to us. It seemed easy enough. Wrong again. When the next cart came around, I was trying to ask what things were and neither me, nor the woman I was asking, could understand each other. So we grabbed a couple things off of that cart to try and everything had shrimp in it. Which is something that I and my daughter avoid, and I had checked and confirmed on the menu previously to make sure that there were plenty of options for us without it. We ended up with a small series of dumplings, a couple different types of rice, egg rolls that were only shrimp inside, some fried popcorn chicken, and cold pork belly. Nothing that we had wanted, from looking at the online menu, came around on any of the carts and the things that we got were not appetizing, to us. Unfortunately the inability to communicate made the experience very difficult and the items we chose were not enjoyable to the point that we just stopped trying and left. We had already received $115 dollars worth of food that nobody wanted or liked. We left still hungry, and deeply disappointed in the experience. If you know how to do Dim Sum, this may be workable for you. If you're going for the first time, avoid this place at all costs. read more

I'd heard Great Wall Cuisine described so many times as the Valley's "best Chinese restaurant" that I'd been eager to try it for ages. When a colleague decided to hold his farewell dinner here, I knew I had to come. Since my friend knew the owner and since it was a farewell to Arizona dinner, he ordered off-menu. What we were served was fresh and delicious. I realized upon arriving that this was a Cantonese/Hong Kong style restaurant. China is really more of a continent than country (think Europe) and there are so many varieties of Chinese cuisine. Truly, some of the best Chinese food I've found in the Valley is in Mesa and Tempe (Chandler is still largely unexplored for me) but I found Great Wall to be a solid choice, especially for folks wanting seafood. The tanks with live fish were reminiscent of something you'd expect to find in Asia. We had one dish of garlic clams that were unforgettable, and I don't eat a ton of seafood. Even on a Sunday evening, Great Wall was hopping with business, which is always a good sign. I'm sure that the location helps as there aren't a ton of Asian options out here. Another thing going for it is that the service is proactive. I don't remember many times that I've had my plate changed out in something that wasn't formal dining. The staff is on top of their game (bonus points if you speak Cantonese). The restaurant has also a great wine list. For Chinese food, I prefer the spicier options out there (Hunan/Sichuan/Chongqing) but Great Wall Cuisine is a very solid option for Cantonese food. It can be a little overwhelming if you are new to dim sum, but don't hesitate to ask questions! The people pushing the cart may not all volunteer information about the food they are carrying, but all the questions I had were answered. Plus, everything is tasty, so the pointing at things method will likely serve you just fine (if you don't have food allergies). And let me tell you, this is in my top five of all time dim sum restaurants for flavor. Not variety, however. While they do have a big selection, I really am used to a lot more options. But the ones they DO have (especially their shu mai) are so delicious! Their wait staff is always friendly. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be enough carts going around but that doesn't subtract a star. Pricing on the food is non existent and confusing. At the end of our meal we go to check out and we ended up paying I believe around 140$ for our meal. I've been to better looking dim sum restaurants with more personable service for around the same price or possibly maybe even a little less. You cannot demand a tip for service you did not provide. There was a lady at the front literally demanding we tip all the servers??? We didn't have any!!! Horrible customer service, super loud environment, food was soooo MID. I've always heard good things about this place for dim sum. I came here for the first time a few weeks ago in May. It was busy, but things moved along quickly. We waited for about 20 min before we got a table. Food was coming out on carts and most of everything was good. The 3 star rating is from the bill. It was about $77.00 for 2 people and we had some leftovers to go. I pay cash at when eating out as my own safety precautions to fraud. I paid with a $100 bill, took my change and walked out without hesitation. I didn't get a receipt. As I'm getting to the car, I check the change and was shorted. Maybe it was an accident for miss counting a 1 for a 5, who knows. We had other things to do, than to worry about a few dollars. We gave Great Wall a try for Sunday morning for Dim Sum. Their published opening time is 10 Am however they were open for quite a while when we arrived at 9:50 Am. Our group of 6 was seated quickly as the large dining room filled quickly. The carts came quickly as we ordered tea and waters. We are accustom to Mekong Palace so in comparison. Great Walls tables are spaced much closer than Mekong Palace making things seem more hectic. Food is what it's all about right? Their shumai, pot stickers, gylan, items and portions are larger than Mekong. The taste and texture were good. The variety was good too. Close to what is offered at Mekong. We also ordered Peking Duck with the bread and Crispy pork belly. Both very good. The place is tired and well worn which can be concerning but they make up for it by being a solid dim sum place! read more

The service isn't stellar, but honestly at restaurants like this, I don't really expect it to be. The servers aren't rude. They're just respectful of the fact that you don't need to be checked on all the time. Each time I've come here, it's right after they stop serving dim sum, so it's always quiet and peaceful inside. I have been to the restaurant 5 times in the past year. Was so excited to have authentic dim sum here in Phoenix. The food is actually well done. HOWEVER, they don't seem to be able to keep the food HOT!! This is a key component of Dim Sum. And we have been to the restaurant at the open, so there is no excuse for cold food being served. And, when I complained to the manager, he shrugged it off and asked if I wanted to have it microwaved! That is ridiculous.
