So my boyfriend and I finally stopped in and gave this place a try after seeing how big the lines get here for weeks. Parking is hit and miss depending on when you go, street only parking. Small little shop with a couple tables inside and a few onside if you're looking to enjoy here. The line does get pretty long, but it moves pretty decent. Not as slow as a Disneyland ride, but don't expect to be in and out. It's worth the wait though. We got a Concha de Cacao, Doña, Choco Pan, their California Loaf to go and 2 drinks - Hoja Santa Matcha and a Chocolate latte. Everything was amazing. Perfect balance of sweet, but not too sweet, soft and fluffy, while also have a good bite. The drinks were good, my partner loved his (the Hoja) and I thought it was delicious too. I got the Chocolate latte and thought it was just ok, I wanted a bit more of an espresso kick, but my partner said he thought it was great (he doesn't really like coffee though haha). Also just a heads up, they only have whole milk or Oat milk. I'm not a fan of either, so I was a bit sad by that and probably why I didn't care too much for mine. We then took home the California Loaf and when we cut into that evening, it was phenomenal! Paired with some butter and oh goodness we were in heaven. It's time for an updated review. The staff - is always so nice - never feel like they care less about you. Very attentive. The coffee is so fresh and amazing. I had their pour over and dulce de leche latte - both very delicious. I mean... Jose from Steelhead is serving coffee - he's the long beach staple barista!!!! We got some beans too - and cafe cuate is so good. Roast is fresh and perfect for pour overs The quality of their baked goods is almost always so consistent - I would say 99%. I've had only one instance where I was unhappy with a bake of their flatbread and they responded with such graciousness and kindness. I came here for the first time today at 12:30pm and some of the pastries are gone. I was a bit sad because I am a foodie and I love trying new food. I ordered the pastelito de guava and jamon roll. I like the pastelito de guava but wish they had all the guava inside the flour , the guava was not on ever flour part and this made the pastry pastelito de guava not too delicious. My 3 stars is for the pastelito de guava. The jamon roll was not that tasty, the ham inside the pastry was not that delicious. I finally made it into Gusto Bread and I am so glad that I did! I came half an hour before they opened at 7:30a.m. on Saturday during Easter weekend. I was the first person in line and by the time they opened, there were about 10 people in line. Like a few reviewers have said, come early to ensure every thing is still available. I bought so many things to try since this place is far for me to frequent. I enjoyed all but one item that I got from here. The Doña ($9.50) was my least liked item. Everything from here is pretty pricey, but I felt that the Doña was very expensive for what it is. It is a twice-baked concha with a thin spread of jam on top with a sugar crumble on top and sliced almonds on the other half of the sugar crumble. The inside of the concha was a bit plain and dry. It was better after I reheated at home and added more jam inside, but I wouldn't order this again. It just isn't worth the price. The following items are all things that I would get again, but not all of them are always available since it was a weekend special. I'll mark the specials with an asterisk :). 1. Biscuit ($3.75) 2. Bolillo ($4) - a great cheese and jalapeño bread! 3. California Loaf ($10) 4. Field Loaf ($10.50) - more dense than the CA Loaf 5. Place is cozy and clean. The fact that the door is always closed and the AC is running, perfect! Friendly staff especially the bearded barista guy with glasses. You are super friendly, and thank you for making our drinks (good stuff). The chocolate latte is yummy! The pastries are good but a bit pricey. Incredible modern Mexican panaderia! After reading Tejal Rao's piece on Gusto, I was super excited to check them out. What I found surpassed my expectations, high as they were due to the article. Every single creation from this bakery is just wonderful! Not only are they delicious, Gusto utilizes whole grain and natural fermentation in all of their baked goods and the result is exceptional! Some of my favorites: Nixtamal Queen (kouign-amann made with nixtamal and sourdough) Pastelito (guava filled) Doña (twice-baked concha with seasonal toppings) Oreja (palmiers) Medialuna (a more recent addition to their menu, like croissants but pillowy and lightly sweet) Seriously, I love everything about Gusto! I only wish they were slightly closer to me and that they serve better coffee. My husband and I both had the Dulce de Leche Latte's and they were delicious mine was iced with oat milk excellent flavor. All the pastries and breads looked awesome so we decided to try a couple. I went with the NIXTAMAL QUEEN which was heirloom corn masa caramelized sweet bread the consistency and flavor was on point so good there were so many layers in each bite. Had the one of the best cafe experiences ever today at Gusto Bread! From the expertly crafted Latin influenced pastries to the warm and inviting vibes and incredibly knowledgeable staff - this place is worth the drive! (In my case 40 minutes!) It is truly the perfect combination of hospitable service and quality soul satisfying house-made baked goods. Patty was so helpful from the get go offering her time to describe all of the delicious options to me. As a noobie to the cafe, I like to learn about all the options (sorry folks for being that person who holds up the line!). I never once felt rushed! Must get of the things I tried: Alfajores with dulce deleche (the most tender walnut shortbread cookies with a perfectly thick spread of salted caramel) The guava pastry!! The real deal compared to Porto's version (and boy do I love those guys) - the super light and flakey and crispy crust with fresh real guava filling is so good and reminiscent of the ones we had in Puerto Rico. The sourdough concha was also good with its crispy chocolate crust though as I've noted with most concha - best dipped and enjoyed with your latte :). Great place for pastries. When I arrived on a late Sunday morning the line was out the door. Luckily it goes pretty fast, so I only spent 10 minutes in queue. The staff was friendly and helpful if you don't know what to get. The indoor space is cute and small, so they only have limited seating inside. There are plenty of tables outside though, but depending on when you go, they can be filled as well. We got the pastelito de guyaba and nixtamal queen. The nixtamal isn't overly sweet, with a nice flakey texture. Delish! It was a little pricey so I wouldn't make it a weekly stop, but definitely worth getting once in awhile. read more

A bread is not just a bread, and a pastry is not just a pastry. I had no inkling of this truth until I bit into Gusto Bread. How can eating bread be such a transcendental experience? I could not think as I savored the flavor of the pastry, and my eyes involuntarily shut. How did I know their pastelito de guayaba had fresh, high-quality ingredients? I literally bit into a chunk of guava, and there was even an errant guava seed in the mix. The fragrance of the guava paste was intoxicating, and the buttery, flaky crust amplified the taste. The lady behind the counter offered her recommendations and patiently described each of the artworks in display. I have yet to share the California Loaf with my family, and I can't wait for them to be astonished by the experience. Gusto has a line for a reason. They're dang good. Honestly, I've read through some of the reviews out of curiosity as to why there are a few bad ones. Some mentioned the prices but you're paying for quality ingredients--it's to be expected. Some of them illicited an eye roll. Their bread is so moist and bouncy because it really is made fresh. If you purchase the day-old bread, there's a difference. Gusto is a mom and pop shop--not sure what that comment was about. Also, my favorite drink is the horchata matcha and I cannot get it produced anywhere else to get that same taste. Gusto has me for life. I don't like conchas. But I LOVED the concha de cacao! Everything we ate here was of the highest quality. The medialuna was one of the best I've ever had in the U.S. - I had flashbacks to Medialunas Calentitas in the best possible way! The dulce de leche latte was precisely what I had hoped: the dulce de leche was used to accentuate taste and elevate the coffee, while most places add too much and make the drinks cloyingly sweet. My mother-in-law is quite picky: she said that the cafe de olla was the best she had ever had in her life. The piloncillo of the cafe de olla was of high quality, and didn't leave too sweet an aftertaste. The flavors were delicately and excellently balanced - much more than cafes de olla from comparable panaderías. The pan de maíz was magnificent - upon their first bite, everyone in my group exclaimed, "oh wow!" It is soft and moist, bringing together the best of cornbread and mini loaves. The texture was a touch grainy because it preserved the texture of the maíz. The airy crumb and moistness further elevated the maíz - it was the star of the show in part because the high quality ingredients celebrated it. Instead of picking a drink myself I asked the employee to pick their favorite drink for me, which was a Dulce de Leche Latte; I also added a Nixtamal Queen pastry. The latte was very good, not too sweet which was a pleasant surprise. The pastry was also very good, and tasted just like sweet corn that you would get from a Mexican restaurant. By the time we left, there was a good line of about 20 people waiting to order; which is something I love to see. My only criticism of Gusto Bread is that I wish the pastry was served warm.
