You can't go wrong with the combo over rice. The location is very clean and well-maintained.

Most delicious Gyro, very close to the ones I've had in New York City. Ingredients are fresh, see for yourself!

Not exactly what I expected but then again we are in Texas? Evidently has some roots from NY or NJ area and then came out to the Lone Star State. More of a MiddleEastern version of a Gyro and more. Not a bad tasting Pita or something, but certainly NOT like from back home in Chicago. There it's more Greek style Gyroooooos from Greeks. So much more authentic and flavorful. Pretty decent but very small portions and very pricey indeed. Good taste Just not enough meat's and very overpriced for the portions. Love the decor and the whole place seems cool but sorry not a Gyro King in my book.....more like a King's Royal Jester. They should change name to be more realistic..... Imitación de giroscopio

    8. Lamb Over Rice Platter
    Yasser H.

Gyro king was in point with their lamb over rice platter. Once I placed the order, it was my choice of what sides to add to the platter. I think rice and lamb and little bit of salad would have been fine. But I got greedy, and added garbanzo beans. Jalapeños, corn, little bit of carrots and cauliflower, which Were all part of the complimentary sides. As a result, the platter lost a little bit of its essence with all these extra unnecessary sides. Nonetheless, the rice and lamb and sauce were very good. They also give you the option to add extra meat. I see myself returning here for subsequent visits.

I ordered the chicken over rice platter and it was pretty decent. I felt like it was missing something I can't quite put my finger on. Maybe the tzaiki sauce that leaned toward a ranch sauce. Either way, it was tasty and I'd go back to try the gyros. Service was very quick and friendly!

Established back in 1977, this Greek café has grown from a humble walk‑up window into a full‑fledged neighborhood institution, beloved for its hearty Mediterranean comfort food and lively, come‑as‑you‑are atmosphere. The Montrose location stays bustling from lunch through late night, drawing in everyone from families to night‑owls to longtime regulars who've been coming here for decades. What keeps people returning is simple: the food hits. Diners consistently praise the authentic Greek flavors, especially the gyro plates -- a blend of beef and lamb shaved from the spit, tucked into warm, fresh pita, and finished with cool, garlicky tzatziki. Portions are generous without being sloppy, and the pricing stays reasonable, making it one of the best value spots in the neighborhood. Your gyro arrives stacked, your fries come hot, and your plate feels like it was built by someone who actually wants you to leave full. The menu is huge, but the classics shine brightest. The Greek salad is crisp and refreshing, loaded with feta, olives, tomatoes, and their famous dressing. Service here is fast, friendly, and efficient -- the kind of counter‑style operation where the staff keeps things moving without losing the warmth that makes the place feel welcoming. Guests frequently mention how upbeat and helpful the team is, even during rush hours. The vibe is lively but never chaotic: families grabbing dinner, couples sharing mezze plates, and regulars chatting with staff like old friends. It's casual, energetic, and unmistakably Montrose. One thing that sets Niko Niko's apart is its deep Houston history. The Fetokakis family has run the restaurant for nearly half a century, maintaining a strong work ethic and a commitment to quality that helped the café earn multiple Houston Press awards over the years -- from Best Pork Chops to Best Family‑Owned Restaurant. Even as the city has changed around it, Niko Niko's has stayed true to its roots: hearty food, Greek hospitality, and a community‑driven spirit. Whether you're grabbing a quick gyro, sitting down for a full spread, or stopping by for dessert after a night out, Niko Niko's delivers exactly what a neighborhood staple should: great food, great value, and a welcoming atmosphere. The flavors are bold, the portions are generous, and the experience feels like Houston -- diverse, warm, and full of character. If you're in Montrose and craving Greek comfort done right, this spot remains one of the city's most reliable pleasures.

For food, we usually start with an appetizer and split the mixed shawarma plate. This last time we shared a Greek salad as an appetizer. Fresh and delicious as always. One of our sides was the baba ghanoush, which was incredible. Dont get me started on the pita it comes with....Warm, soft, and fresh. It takes everything in me not to demolish the whole basket. For our other side, we always get the potatoes. They're perfectly seasoned with a slight sweetness and a little kick. Hands down my favorite side dish here! The portions are generous too. For me and my boyfriend (who can definitely eat), splitting this is always enough to fill us up. I also have to shout out the service because it's consistently great. Even when it's packed and there's just one waiter, everything flows smoothly. Safe to say we'll keep coming back!

I went here last night ordering the # 74 Lamb Adana with rice n salad, plus an extra skewer. I also got another # 74 togo to share with family, bc that's it. Will they open another establishment similar in the future is completely unknown. Istanbul Grill will be missed and was the oldest Turkish restaurant still standing. The lamb kebab skewers were so delicious, well-seasoned, juicy, not gamy and had that charcoal / charbroiled aroma to them, which all kabobs are really supposed to have like TX Bbq is to smokiness taste. The rice was really fresh like the meat in its own right with a buttery flavor to it. The salad was tangy and refreshing. Some other Turkish restaurants might make some dishes good, but never execute the lamb adana entree right, due to heat source n lack of seasoning. The service was very welcoming, friendly and efficient. Some places tend to not give a damn about many customers when they're about to close, but this place was always on point. Best of luck to the people running it and their staff.
