This place is honestly really great for what it is. When you think in terms of scarcity when it comes to banh cuon places in the sgv, and price as well, this place is the best in the area. The people who work there are always sweet to me and always get me what i need. Is it the best banh cuon I've ever had? No. But like i said l, considering how it's 1 of 2 real banh cuon spots in the SGV it is! Driving down all the way to OC for banh cuon in this economy? I don't think so LOL. It's unfortunate this is the only place I know that serves banh cuon nowadays in SGV. If you know another, please let me know, it would be greatly appreciated. What I Ordered - Banh Cuon Dat Biet Hai Nam This is translated to three type (shrimp powder, ground pork and mushrooms) flour sheet combination with two type of shrimp tempura (1. fried mung bean and shrimp ball, 2. fried sweet potato and shrimp) and pork cake (cha). The ratio between flour and filling was so bad!!! Just sprinkle of shrimp powder (not even ground shrimp like the menu stated) and basically no ground pork or mushroom. The filling is my favorite part of banh cuon! You would get way more filling in the banh cuon at Banh Mi Che Cali. This is a pathetic version. The mung bean and shrimp ball was basically all mung bean and 1 small shrimp. The sweet potato and shrimp tempura was good. The fish sauce here tastes like vinegar and sugar. Even if you dump a bunch of chili paste, it doesn't hide that sweet taste. My dad asked for lemon and received only 1 slice. Hainan chicken rice ($6.75): it comes with some kind of leaves, typical pickled radish and carrot and super salty chicken broth. The chicken is juicy but it's super bony and chicken neck is included. Definitely, a Mom and Pop shop / Hole in the Wall Joint. I never even knew of this place existence until Banh Cuon Tay Ho closed down, and my Mom suggested coming here to get our banh cuon fix. The first time we came, they were closed (I forgot if it was Wednesday or Thursday). This time, they were opened when we came here for 2016 Valentine's Day Lunch (and cuz every other Chinese restuarant we liked was hella packed around 1:27pm, lol!). Banh cuon can be described as flour rolled with either minced pork/mushrooms or vegetarian style - also known as "Uot" - pronounced like "Ooot!"). They also have other Vietnamese and Chinese dishes plastered in the front of their shop. I ordered #1 Banh Cuon Dac Biet $6.85, which includes banh cuon with minced pork and mushrooms. Served with pork meat luncheon surrounding the plate, with green mung bean bread and sweet potato - crispy shrimp, and cooked bean sprouts with sliced cucumbers. Mom got #6 Banh Cuon Uot (Vegetarian) Tom Chay $6.30. My Mom's plate is the same as mine - except 2 difference - 1. No Green Mung Bean Bread and 2. The Banh cuon has no meat inside, but does come with crushed dried shrimp powder in there for color. Once our dishes were brought out, they also brought out a giant mug of their fish sauce dipping sauce. If you like the spicy version, just ask them. They gave us the sweeter sauce, and Mom diluted it down with water and lime. As for the banh cuon, it had a nice thick, chewy texture to it. Though the proteins in mine were hella slim. Just like their teenage servers - the Banh cuon are tall and slim with hardly any meat on them, lol! The pork meat luncheons were good. I liked my green mung bean bread, but wished the sweet potato, crispy shrimp was a little bigger and more. The portions here are smaller than Tay Ho (both the former restuarant in Rosemead, and the ones still opened in Westminster, Orange County). For $7 a plate, both Mom and I were still hungry. I was really hungry cuz I even are all the veggies, and those from my Mom's plate too, lol! Came here for their bahn cuon! It is one of the best I've had. I get their number 7 which is the rice wrap with minced meat and mushrooms. It is topped with deep fried sweet potato, which I love! It is a pretty small restaurant, so if you come during a busy time, they may have you share tables. The parking here is pretty horrendous at times because 168 market is right next door. I also ordered their hainan chicken, but wasn't too impressed with it. There were only about 4 pieces of chicken, and it was all white meat. The meat didn't have much flavor, but the rice was pretty decent. I'd recommend sucking to their bahn cuon. If you're in the area and looking for bahn cuon, I'd highly recommend trying this place! read more

Yelp Challenge 100 2019 7/100 This hole in the wall place has the best Banh Cuon. They leave a big jug of fish sauce on the table for you to pour yourself. It's right in between 168 Market and CVS and has a huge parking lot so parking is not an issue. The rice noodle holds everything well and theres a decent amount of filling inside. I'm not impressed with this corner restaurant. There was constant traffic of diners but I don't see why. The food was just ok. The banh canh and the bun rieu was on the bland side. The service was a bit lacking too...we had to ask for things that should have been a given to give. One example was, we asked for to go cups for our coffee. The guy brought the cup and lid but no straws. :/ There are more restaurants for me to try so I'm not going back to this one anytime soon. read more

To give this place even 1 star is too much, in my opinion. Came here for lunch with the pops yesterday after a photo shoot and was seriously grossed out TO THE MAXX. The food was bland and "old tasting" like it had been left there from the night before, the nuoc mam dipping sauce was watered down, the inside looked dirty and unkempt, the workers looked dirty (like LITERALLY dirty. Dirt in fingernails, ashy face, stained clothes, etc.) and the other customers also looked a little "run-down". The whole place just screamed CHEAP like I was literally in the countryside of the Vietnam. We ordered Banh Cuon that was literally just a plate of Rice sheets SPRINKLED with about half a tablespoon of minced pork and black fungus. I was surprised it even came with the cha luo on it. The rice paper was a little tough and not that chewy (hence the "old taste"), the sauce didn't really do much to give it more flavor or help its cause. It was basically just a disgusting plate of rice noodles with a bunch of UNCOOKED beansprouts and tiato leaves. VERY DISSATISFYING. We also ordered a Banh Xeo which was also lacking in flavor. It also had WAYY TOO MUCH corn starch in it giving it an unnatural crispiness that's almost "fake". The shrimp still had the shells on (I know some people actually do eat it this way, but I just see it as lazy and not exactly rustic), the crepe itself had a really weird flavor, (like old oil maybe?) and the whole meal was just a little ruined at this point. Then to top it all off about halfway through the meal I found a LIVE WORM crawling on one of my tiato leaves. WTFFF... -____-" I had already eaten half my meal and felt so disgusted. I just ate half a plate of DIRTY DISGUSTING vegetables. I was NOT a happy camper. When I went up to pay for the totally inedible meal, the waiter overcharged me by a full $5. When I asked him why it costed so much, he immediately started to pretend that he no longer understood English. I just paid the stupid bill and got the heck outta there. Ever since I arrived back in LA, I've been eating up a veritable Vietnamese storm. Making up for lost time, as there was no decent Vietnamese food to be had in Taipei. Sorry Taipei, but it's true. We cruised down to the 168 market plaza today with every intention of hitting up Dong Nguyen, a old standby and long-time favorite. But then I saw Hai Nam Saigon - which is located right next door, which I'd never been to but had been meaning to try out for years and years - and quickly changed my mind. Banh cuon? Yes please! We quickly ordered three items. And when the waiter dude plopped a pitcher - not joking, a PITCHER - of Nuoc Cham on our table, I knew that we were in for a real treat. (Nuoc cham = the sweet and delectably pungent fish sauce-infused elixir featured prominently in many Vietnamese dishes.) The banh cuon with minced pork and mushrooms was on point. The steamed rice rolls were taut and thin, the filling perfectly seasoned, and the provided accoutrements melded perfectly with the rest of the dish. The chicken rice was surprisingly delicious. Nice ginger dipping sauce, and the rice was fluffy and richly accented with chicken fat. And the rice vermicelli bowl with a double serving of grilled shrimp (they'd run out of pork) was generously portioned and teeming with herbs and dark leafy greens. This is 1 of those old school Vietnamese restaurants that has been around Alhambra forever. They specialize in Banh Hoi and Banh Uoit. Many non-Asians, including American born Asians, are unaware that Vietnamese cuisine includes these dishes. They know about Pho and Com dishes, of course, but not the Banh's. Well, hopefully they will make their way to Saigon Hai Nan because these are their specialties. read more

Best fresh banh cuon in town! My boyfriend and I always stop by for lunch and opt in to get the special #1. The owners also offer nem chua on the side and it is hands down one of the most amazing things that I binge on. Also, on hot day I always order the pennywort drink which is made to order, and trust me, you can taste how freshly made it is on first sip. In all, I would definitely recommend this restaurant for authentic Vietnamese cuisine and always make time to come by whenever I'm town. read more

Whenever I'm in the 626 area, I have to go here as one of my meals! They've remembered my order so when I walk in they just make it LOL! My family and I have been coming here since I was a kid. I haven't been here in the last several years and decided to stop by for a quick lunch. The staff was friendly and my to-go order came out quickly. A generous portion of banh cuon with deli meat, bean sprouts, shrimp tempura and a side of fish sauce. The meat and veggie filling in the banh cuon was lacking... I felt like I was mainly eating rice noodle. The shrimp tempura was nice and crispy without being oily. Overall, a cheap and filling lunch. The banh cuon was alright. The portions were big and they didn't skimp on the cha lua, but something was..missing. The side veggies weren't very fresh and the nuoc mam (fish sauce) tasted a little diluted. I'm not an expert on banh cuon or anything, but it seems like a fairly easy dish to prepare so I wasn't too impressed with this place. I even prefer Banh Mi Che Cali's to this. And of course Banh Cuon Tay Ho. The one in San Gabriel is fine, but I grew up eating at the San Jose and Westminster locations which are far superior. Once, my roomate and I tried to make banh cuon when we were living in the land of no vietnamese food (Ft. Laudy) Let's just say....after two pan burns, double teaming (I held the pan off the stovetop while she carefully lifted the rice paper off the pan and onto the plate without ripping it), and twelve very uneven banh cuons later, I will NEVER EVER make it again...that shit is hard to make!! While the banh cuon here is not the best I've ever had, it is in fact very decent! The filling is well seasoned, I like the fried shrimp thing it comes with, and it tastes very fresh with the beansprouts & mint leaves. The only complaint I have is that the noodles are a rolled a little too fat, resulting in a chubby, bottom-heavy banh cuon. It needs to be about five layers less and it would be spot on. I used to live in Alhambra on Electric Ave behind the Toyota dealership in my early 20's. Home was a 500sq ft back house for $400 a month. I wonder what the rent is like these days... When I lived here I did not appreciate all that San Gabriel Valley had to offer. Perhaps it was youth or angst but stereotypes were perceived and I began to hate the traffic, grew tired of hearing the Chinese language and got sick of the food. So I moved to the San Fernando Valley and didn't come back for a minute and a half. When I did I realize traffic is bad everywhere in all of LA, the Chinese language is beautiful and I really miss the food. Where else but the 626 can you get delicious, authentic Asian eats for cheap? Take this hole in the wall, Hai Nam Saigon. I've been coming here since the 90's, especially after 168 came in next door. I am delighted they're still here after all this time. The owner's son is manning the shop now and I am happy to see mom's still in the kitchen. The menu has expanded to include noodle soups and rice dishes but I always stick to the Banh Cuon as that's what they're known for and do very well. Banh Cuon is a Northern Vietnamese specialty consisting of steamed rice crepes with a pork and shrimp filling doused with fish sauce and fresh herbs. I know it doesn't sound too appetizing but its flavor is world famous for a reason. Lately there's been a lot of interest in Vietnamese food and I am most definitely on the bandwagon. I cannot wait to taste new school Vietnamese in all of SoCal but here in the 626 I get to take my time and savor it all. Ya gotta love LA. read more

Their toppings like shrimp tempura and the other fried stuff are pretty crispy and not oily ,which i prefer. The price is about 8bucks for a plate of banh uot which is reasonable. Came in here the other day around 3pm... Saw the biggest roach I have ever seen in the SGV just chilling and climbing the walls. Makes me think twice before I go back to eat there. Their most popular dish is definitely order #1. Banh Cuon Dac Biet! It's minced pork meat with mushrooms rolled up in a steamed sheet of rice flour. Here, they'll top it off with fried sweet potato crisps, cha (sliced meat loaf, essentially), and fresh mint leaves. Mix in some chili paste with your fish sauce and top it all off! So we get there and stood in front looking at all the pics in the storefront window. He already knew he wanted a broken rice (com) plate. I kept changing my mind. Couldn't decide which type of rice flour sheet dish to try. Once we were seated though, I saw two ladies on the next table enjoying an interesting looking combo plate. Very small shop in the 168 market in Alhambra but don't let the size fool you. This place has really good banh guon so you should give it a try next time you are in the area.
