But the Eater review of Chong Qing Lao Zao absolutely nails it. * * * Eater sez: Fans start lining up well before the wooden doors swing open at noon, eventually to walk through corridors that lead them to a bi-level dining area that evokes an old Chinese village, complete with a water wheel, koi, and a faux fire at the foot of each table. One private section is elevated on stilts. Chongqing Lao Zao stands out from the high concentration of nearby hot pot spots -- Hai Di Lao, Liuyishou, 99 Favor Taste. * * * Samuel C sez: a) Like many hot pot restaurants, there are lots of exotic ingredients including all parts of many animals. I did lots of those included thousand layer tripe and beef liver coated in egg. At this restaurant, simple is actually better than exotic. The most famous boiling oil (there are nine to choose from) is a scorchingly hot Chongqing drowning in hot peppers concoction. The oil is hot as blazes in both senses of the word. The simpler the ingredient we put in the oil, the better the results were. Plain old Chinese Cabbage was to die for. Plain old ramen noodles and plain old fish cake became superstars in the hot oil. Thousand layer tripe, not so much. b) Shiitakes are not such a plain ingredient. They become ultimate gourmet delights in the hot oil. c) All the tables around us were ordering some form of Wagyu beef roll. Or rather all the Chinese tables were ordering Wagyu beef rolls. The Anglos were more random. I suspect the Chinese customers were on to something. d) It is tempting to order tons and tons and tons of ingredients for your hotpot because they look so damm good. In practice, three hot pot dipping items per person plus a side dish for the table will leave you waddling out of the restaurant barely able to walk. If that means you just have to come here multiple times to get all the good stuff, Well ... multiple times is not such a dumb idea. e) You definitely want at least one side dish. We ordered a Fried Sesame Bread with Chinese green onions inside. That was the best thing on the table ... On a day when there were a zillion amazing things on the table. The Chinese tables often ordered a fried rice with spicy organs inside. I strongly suspect that fried rice is well worth doing as well. f) They make their own rice wine which is sweet and very milky. They sell it by the jar. You want a whole jar of it. If your table has sake lovers in multiple, you will want several jars of it. g) The room decoration is magical between the sturdy oaken village-gate door, to the waterwheel inside to the stairs and levels and platforms which make you feel like you are in a mountain village. The room would have made this a destination experience even if the food had been mediocre. That the raw ingredients, the prepared dishes, the wine and the boiling oil were amazing sends Chong Qing Lao Zao over the top. * * * Does Yelp offer an eight star rating? If it starts one, Chong Qing Lao Zao would be first in line to get the eight star rating. All the other dishes were also fantastic. Portions are also great, we ended up taking lots home. They gave us free dessert jellies which is also a classic Sichuan dessert; they also had a deal where you get free drinks if you order a certain amount of food, so we got two free drinks. I would have given a five star if not for the super long wait. Granted we did go for Christmas Day dinner. We saw them having to turn away lots of customers. They are super popular. Main issue is there isn't a number system, so getting a table felt a bit random; we considered ourselves lucky. Our servers were very friendly and nice. They told us it would be a bit of a wait, but this was the longest I've ever waited for food: 45 min before the first dish was served. We ordered 5 dishes with rice (forgot to take pictures of two of them). I wasn't told one of the dishes I ordered wasn't available until 30 min after I placed my order. But when the food did come, they all can't together so we didn't have to keep waiting. The servers were also attentive after despite how busy and clearly overwhelmed they were, which was really nice. In conclusion, great food with good portions for spice lovers. Very nice servers and try not to go on Christmas Day since it can get really busy.

TL;DR: You should definitely dine here, no doubt!! My party of 4 arrived Saturday at noon and only waited approximately 40 minutes... and it barely felt that long because they offer a myriad of free services in the waiting room to keep busy: FREE snacks, drinks, phone screen protector replacement, and a variety of games to keep busy. There was even a free hand massage service?!? Pingping did an amazing job covering this entire service desk alone. She provided fun conversation (fun fact: everyone who works here is fluent in both Chinese & English, which is truly amazing) while her dexterous hands nimbly provided the most soothing free hand massage I've ever received. During our convo, she noted that it's usually very busy and a pretty long wait (ESPECIALLY during dinner time). So essentially, if you are expecting a quick dining experience or a short wait time, this is not the place for you. Honestly, just go to McD's or something. The moment you are seated, you realize why the wait for a table is so long - because the service here is BEYOND exceptional, you don't really want to leave. Our servers, Andrew and Nina, were truly the best of the best. Just to start, they were so nice and friendly (a very rare sighting in the streets of NYC). They were thorough and earnest in explaining how everything worked to us first-time diners and extremely patient while waiting our table. They also made sure we had everything we needed; for example, when one of us felt the broth was too spicy, they immediately replaced it with a non-spicy batch of broth. Immediately. They were attentive to all our needs, it really made us everyday plebs feel like royalty. The service is hands-down the best part about Haidilao: you can definitely tell that they put their customers first and genuinely want them to be comfortable and enjoy their entire experience. One last thing: during our meal, there was a Bian lian (Face Changing) performer that appeared to provide a show for everyone and duel the diners in a brave battle of rock-paper-scissors. Then, our table also ordered the hand-pulled noodle dance, which is essentially a man who shows up blasting K-pop on stereo while he elegantly pirouettes with his flour dough partner. That's right, this isn't just any regular hotpot dining experience, there is art & theater involved and it is truly magical. A friend told us about this place and we love hotpot, so we managed to grab a weekend reservation and check it out! First of all, the seating system is extremely smooth if you have a reservation. We walked in, got a piece of paper, walked through the waiting room, and sat down to eat in less than 5 mins. However, if we did have to wait, the waiting room is crazy! It has a bunch of snacks and a kiddy play area and mario kart. I wouldn't have been too bummed to wait there. Once we got in, our waiter Andrew was super on point. Extremely helpful, always at our table to check if we needed anything, great at explaining the menu and answering questions. The entire staff was very polite. The food came rolling out as soon as we ordered it on the tablet. The "dancing noodle" was fun. The broths/food were all absolutely delicious. The bathrooms were amped up to the max(bidets, perfume, toothbrushes, you name it). There was free soft serve ice cream at the end that may have been the creamiest ice cream I ever had. And all super affordable. Also- my clothes didn't smell AT ALL. Andrew was right, the place has amazing ventilation(plus I tried that bathroom perfume). I usually leave hotpot reaking of meat. Haidilao Hotpot offers a truly memorable dining experience, and I absolutely fell in love with this place. The attention to detail starts from the moment you walk in, with impeccably clean bathrooms that include thoughtful touches like a hair dryer, toothbrushes, and perfume. They even provide aprons for dining, ensuring you can fully enjoy your meal without worrying about mess. The complimentary sides like chicken nuggets, onion rings, pig ears, and kelp were a nice surprise, and the sauce bar had an impressive variety of options to customize your dipping sauces. The star of the meal was undoubtedly the chicken broth--rich, decadent, and the perfect base for cooking the high-quality meats and other ingredients. The broth truly elevated the entire hotpot experience. However, there were a few downsides. I wish the water provided was cold, especially when eating spicy food; instead, it was served warm, which wasn't ideal. Another drawback is the price--everything is quite expensive, with broth alone costing $20, and the vegetables and meats were also overpriced. While the free ice cream at the end was a nice touch, it turned out to be frozen yogurt, not true ice cream, which was a bit of a letdown. Despite the high cost, Haidilao is a place I'd return to, but only for a special occasion, given the overall experience and the quality of the food. read more

Honestly this review originally was going to be 2 stars, because the first time that I came here the service was honestly sub-par, in other words disappointing, our server during my first visit, whom I don't even remember the name, since she was not there half the time, my soup base was almost gone before she even came to refill it and I had to call her over to refill it for me, and the food was good but nothing amazing. But after seeing all the great reviews I decided to give them another chance, and I am so glad I did. This time definitely made up for the disappointing experience last time. This time I came with my parents and our server Exdeus was amazing, he was so polite and patient and never got annoyed at my parents constant questions, he took his time to talk to them and made sure we were happy. The food this time was also an improvement, we ordered the fresh shrimp and Wagyu beef cube from Exdeus's recommendation and it was so delicious, the wagyu beef literally melted in my mouth and the shrimp was so fresh they were still jumping. I am so glad I gave them a second chance, and I will definitely come back again, my parents were also raving about how good the service was and that they want to come back again. read more

I'm not exactly a big fan of hotpot but I saw the reviews on this place and I had to know what the hype was all about. Came here with my wife to try it out and they did NOT disappoint. My wife and I did have to wait for awhile, about an hour but the hosts helped to make the wait more pleasant than any other place would have. They have 2 massage chairs for those who are waiting, an Xbox to play if that's your thing, and they even do nails!!! How could the service possibly get any better? Their bathrooms are also very clean and there were even more amenities provided in there for take. Once we were brought to our table, our server Britney greeted us in a very friendly manner and answered many of the questions we had about this place. I definitely would recommend her if this is your first time here. The food was a bit expensive but it was very delicious. We got the mala flavored broth and the tomato broth and we ordered the fatty beef combo plus other sides. If you want a show to go with your meal, make sure to order the dancing noodles They also have many drinks to choose from so if you can't decide on one, just come back next time! I recently visited Haidilao hot pot, and I have to say that it truly deserves 5 stars. From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere was inviting and welcoming. The service was top-notch, with the staff being attentive and accommodating the meats and noodles for us. The hot pot experience at Haidilao was truly amazing. The mushroom broth was rich and flavorful, with a variety of options to choose from. The meats were high-quality, and the seafood was fresh. The restaurant also offered a HUGE variety of dipping sauces and sides to complement the hot pot. And the best part is... its self serve! They even have free ice cream... wow. What sets Haidilao apart from other hot pot restaurants is the level of service and attention to detail. The staff was constantly refilling our broth, giving us new plates, and providing a warm and friendly service. We frequent this restaurant quite often and are very satisfied with their food and service. The manager Catherine was very helpful; she was attentive in making sure that any concerns were taken care of in a prompt manner. The food itself is fresh and their menu has a wide selection. This ranges from your starting hot pot base to the individual ingredients and sauces. I typically go for a mild soup base but my friend favors the spicier broth bases -- there's something for everyone. There is sauces, oils, and fresh chopped herbs that every person can mix and match to their personal preference. The seafood, which I'm normally very cautious about ordering, was fresh and tasted fantastic. The portions are also generous. This is a great place to go to with family and friends. There are meat and vegetable selections that have variety and sizable portions, making them great for sharing while getting to try a bit of everything. This is by far my favorite hotpot place in the city! The service is amazing and the quality of the food is great. We arrived at the restaurant at around 6PM on a Saturday night. There were at least 20 parties ahead of us and we waited about 1.5 hours before being seated. Good news is that they have a little waiting area with free drinks, games, origami, and cell phone screen protectors that you can use while you wait. After we were seated inside, we were given an apron, a bag to put our masks in, and a iPad to place our orders. There's also a sauce bar with complimentary fruits, side dishes, and soup. We got the four soup base option (tomato, mushroom, spicy, and bone broth). All soup bases came with a decent amount of ingredients. I especially recommend the tomato and the spicy broth as both were very authentic. Unfortunately, the dancing noodle was no longer an option due to the pandemic. The services are great. While we were waiting for our table, there were free drinks, snacks and games to enjoy in the waiting area. Unlike other Haidilao, you have to wait standing outside of the restaurant, here you can sit inside the lounge-like waiting area. When we got our table, the waiter warmly greeted us and was attentive to take our order, add additional soup and offer us free ice cream. We picked pork tripe chicken hotpot, pork bone hotpot and 2 water to fill out the 4 slots of soup. A HDL waiter at other location told us that filling two slots with hot water is a great way to get the best value. We ordered Kobe beef, Australia lamb, tofu, vegetable combo. All were great. We also enjoyed the side dishes from the sauce bar from spicy seaweed, blue berry to sweet congee. The milk tea ice cream was awesome. It is creamy and not very sweet. The ice cream cone is so crispy that a bite of the ice cream is crispy outside, tender inside. I am not sure if milk tea ice cream is unique for this location, I didn't have this in HDL in CA, WA and TX. read more

An amazing experience for our first time here! First of all, there was such extensive outdoor tented seating and my husband and I were seated right away. We were told about the different broths and were able to choose our items via an ipad. My hair was out and I was offered a hair tie, and also little baggies for our masks! We were taken care of by the most amazing server Jason, who was so attentive and kept us laughing and smiling through the entire meal. He even gave us pointers on the right amount of time to cook each item. The broths and meats were delicious and fresh, our favorites were the marinated beef and the shrimp paste that Jason lovingly cooked for us, but honestly we were blown away by the hospitality. Also shoutout to Andrew for keeping our water cups and broths replenished. Don't even get me started on the bathrooms and their amazing amenities. Everything is pretty much novelty but it's worth coming on occasions. The waiting area has crazy cool amenities like hand massages, free screen protector install, Nintendo switch games, snacks and drinks. It really distracts from the long waits. Therefore, it's a place to come to when you have a lot of time! The bathrooms have razors, toothbrushes, cologne, etc. and it feels like you're in a spa. It's pretty nuts in a good way. At the end of the day, You DO end up indirectly paying from all these amenities with an expensive bill, but that only means to actually take advantage of everything. The staff is really respectful and well trained. The mushroom broth is amazing! It's the first time I would choose a non-spicy broth over a spicy one. The sauce bar also has other items like fresh fruit, marinated bites, seaweed salad, and other great options. Would def be back! But prob in a few months. read more

This is my first time to haidilao in New York. I'm so happy because the service is really awesome. While we are waiting for our table, we can have a variety of snacks, tea and juice for free. There were also free hand massages and some simple recreational facilities, but we didn't enjoy it because we did not have a long wait. It is worth mentioning that when we were told that there was a table available, my daughter suddenly burst into tears, unwilling to leave her toys (there is a special place for children to play), a waiter named CAI CAI, very kindly coaxing my daughter, and took a small toy to her, it was really sweet. Then she helped us get the chairs for baby and introduced us about the bottom of the pot and some special food. My husband commended about her service because people get impatient with children crying, but she didn't. We felt comfortable and enjoyed our time in haidilao. read more

Haidilao Hotpot always has been my favorite hotpot in China. When I heard about the grand opening of Haidilao at Flushing, I was so excited and decided to host my 50th Birthday party in this place. Haidilao's service is always as good as ever. This Haidilao's environment at flushing is a good reflection of how we had in China. In addition, I would like to express my special thanks to a girl named Amber. In the communication with her during the wait time, she noticed that it was my 50th birthday and she sent me a surprise gift. Also, a private room had been arranged for us. I ordered a Sichuan classic, twice cooked pork, and a new dish I've never seen before, snow pea leaves in broth. The twice cooked pork was a fantastic iteration of this dish. The pork was sliced thin with the perfect amount of chew which paired well texturally with the soft, buttery leeks. The flavor was so well balanced while being heavily seasoned and the smoky wok hei flavor really comes through. The snow pea leaves were soft and silky with tender stems, and they came served in a golden broth with some mushrooms, juicy tomato and snappy pieces of black fungus. The dish is topped with a century egg. I found the broth itself to have a bit of a grainy texture when sipped. I've tried century egg in the past and while I'm not disgusted by it, I never quite felt like I understand the ingredient until eating this dish. The creamy, funky flavor of the egg reminds me of blue cheese and it pairs very well with the subtle flavors of the snow pea leaves and amplifies the richness of the broth. I really enjoyed my experience here and would like to return with a group to try more of the Sichuan classics on the menu.

The staff wanted my wife to sit at an angle to the table; so that they could pass through. The seafood itself was solid traditional Cantonese fare with fresh lobster tanks, steamed fish, and classic banquet-style dishes. The atmosphere felt colorful authentic Hong Kong banquet hall energy. However, some of their pricing was completely out of whack. Mother's Day premium for sure which is understandable, but some dishes were simply excessively expensive for what was delivered. For example, our two lobsters, while fresh, were missing that smoky "wok hei" flavor that great Cantonese kitchens are known for. It lacked the depth, aroma, and richness one expects from a proper high-heat wok preparation. A few items felt priced more for Guide Michelin luxury dining than a Flushing seafood hall. This said, the service was efficient and professional; changing plates all the time. So a high level of attention above the usual Cantonese restaurant. Overall, decent food in and an authentic Hong Kong style restaurant that targets special family gatherings, but be prepared, both the crowds and the bill can become overwhelming very quickly. I paid more than $400 for three people. But we had a Tiger Fish which is $50 per pound.

I have so many reasons to believe that Emperor is truly the reincarnation of the restaurant...just a little rusty. I've only come here for dim sum and I'm still surprised it doesn't get even half of the insane volume that nearby dim sum restaurants get, especially with how much closer they are to Roosevelt Ave. I have to say that the dim sum here is slightly better than most locations in the core downtown area, both in presentation and taste. No cart ladies, just a paper and pencil ordering system. The other diners that I usually encounter seem to strike me as locals, which is becoming harder to find these days. Prices are slightly more expensive than the other places, which is probably a factor as to why there aren't as many customers. The other reason is probably the subpar customer service here, which I've encountered on a number of recent visits. There are so many workers here, but none of them seem to have any good grasp of what customer service is. For example, I've had the waiter hover over me as I was gathering cash for my bill and snatched it the moment I placed the money down, also demanding at least 18% (again, for subpar service). Also, if you complain to them about your food, even if you find a hair, they will not do anything about it. The food quality is slightly above most of the dim sum places, but also bear in mind the hit-or-miss service you'll get, which the latter can be super frustrating.
