Started my day craving crawfish and ended it eating some! I'm new to the area so trying new crawfish spots have been a little hobby of mine lately. I decided to check this place out because of their 3lb for $21 deal. I ended up ordering just 1lb to go with extra Nitro seasoning for .25. Honestly I didn't even need to add the extra seasoning It was that flavorful! I let my husband know that this is my new go to for crawfish! I will definitely be back with friends to dine in. We dined at the new location last week and must admit we really enjoyed the new digs. We dined outside on the patio, which we really weren't able to do at the previous location. The food was good as it always is - I ate some peel n' eat shrimp and a small house salad. I love the pecans in the house salad which add some nice texture and taste while still keeping it healthy. But the service we received from Trina was the best part of the meal. I was a little concerned about eating outside - at other venues that can mean you're ignored. But Trina was really on top of things, providing friendly and efficient service. She made us feel very welcome and we plan to ask for her moving forward. Thank you, Half Shells. Uhhhh-Mazing!!! Really good place. Service was great, Rick was our waiter and had everything on lock. We had the oyster nachos and fried pickles for appetizers. Pickles were incredible. Perfectly cooked. There were two little ranch dipping cups, it would have been nice if one was a spicy ranch. The oyster nachos were cooked to perfection, but eat them fast so the chips don't get soggy. One of us got the clam chowder and I got the crab bisque. Clam chowder had more potatoes than I prefer, but the crab bisque was delicious. Creamy, with lots of crab mixed in. Chicken and andouille is a great option for those that don't like seafood. Good sized portion. The crab and shrimp meal is large, and totally worth it if your appetite (and patience) is up for it. Get a side of hush puppies, they are some of the best in DFW. Blackberry cobbler was so so. It could have been because I was so full, but I know I've had better at other establishments. read more

Walking distance from my friend's house, located in a great area bustling with various stores and restaurants. Friendly staff, lots of energy during the lunch rush. Settled on the Pick 2, Fried shrimp and Blackened catfish with green beans and waffle fries. Green beans were cooked really well, not wilted or overcooked and right amount of seasoning. I was a little surprised with the small size of the catfish fillet and there were only 4 shrimp, but combined with the sides, it ended up being a filling portion. Great flavor in the cocktail and tartar sauces. Food came out pretty quick and we were in and out in about 40 min. read more

Yummy! Half Shells was the best seafood I have had in a long time! I really like Fish City Grill but this was even better. They have a different menu and features of the month. They even have daily specials because of the opportunities to get a good quality fish at a price they are able to share with their customers. I had the Seasame Crusted Swordfish, instead of the white rice I got seasonal vegetables. The food looked great and came out Hot! The flavor was so good. The teriyaki glaze really completed the fish. They are well staffed and can manage the crowds well with tolerable wait times. Parking is a butt during prime times but that is the Shops of Legacy and nothing to do with the restaurant. So leave your attitude in the car and come try this place out! I am not a fan of clam chowder, but they gave me a sample and it was Amazing! They have 5 soups on the menu at all times and the oyster nachos are Yum! Plus I do not even like Orsters. Happy hour margaritas is my beverage of choice tonight but they have other specials and a full bar. Everyone is friendly. My husband had been craving oysters since our visit to Acme Oyster House in NOLA. We thought we would never find a location in Dallas that could compare...until we found Half Shells! We ordered the charbrioled oysters and the waitress also recommended we try the Rockefeller Oysters. We both ordered the Honey Chipotle shrimp tacos as our meal. Everything was delicious; but I was not as fond of the Rockefeller Oysters as I was the original Charbrioled. I believe the spinach caused the oysters to be watered down which washed out most of the flavor. The honey chipotle shrimp tacos had just the right amount of spice and the shrimp were plump and filled every bite. I would definitely recommend this place. I plan to visit whenever I need my oyster cravings satisfied. read more

We decided to switch things up and give this place a whirl last Friday night and it was great! We arrived around 7:30pm (had to grab a dirty martini at Jasper's first) and there was no wait. We were seated right away, our server was awesome, and the food was really good! We started with the oyster nachos which were good, but nothing I would rush back for. The cilantro shrimp tacos, on the other hand, were AMAZING. I would definitely rush back for those! Quick note, they don't have domestic beer on tap. If you're wanting to pair your food with a beer, they have a few craft beers to choose from on tap and everything else is in a bottle. Prices are decent, food is yummy, and service is great. Our visit to Half Shells could have been better. Husbands order of shrimp & grits was "delicious" he said, lots of flavors grits a tiny bit runny but flavorful. My fried oysters & shrimp & hushpuppies were wayyyy overdone! Extra brown, brown, brown, hushpuppies obviously frozen were so small & dried out. I thought I'd try to eat but the more I tried the less I enjoyed so just stopped & asked another server for more food. We'd tried to find our server to no avail. Our server brought new seafood & mentioned that she'd thought everything looked too done. If so why didn't she offer at that point for new seafood? Our server was the bar tender but was also waiting on tables. My main issue with our visit...her long blond hair....it was not tied back & I'd noticed while we were waiting to be served that she was constantly flipping her hair back....not a good sign when you are serving food. We've been here twice now, and I'm still exploring the menu. One thing I can confirm is that the crawfish etouffee is amazing here (I asked for a full order instead of the half/half order of etouffee and fried crawfish). My husband also loves the oyster nachos, and his rainbow trout was top notch. The char-grilled oysters are also delicious, but the sizes of the oysters can be inconsistent. The staff are so friendly here and makes me feel right at home! (Some of the other shops at legacy restaurants can be a bit more on the snobby side) This is my favorite American seafood restaurant in the neighborhood. read more

Had a team lunch here recently. I ordered a salmon special from the board; be advised that, at least in this case, there was not a lunch sized portion, and it was pretty spendy. Featuring a cut of grilled salmon resting on a bed of slightly wilted spinach and maque choux (a corn based side dish), I added a side order of hush puppies to get a little carb infusion. The hush puppies didn't make it out with the order, I had to ask again and they came when I was almost done. The salmon was decent, perhaps a little overcooked but not to the point of being dry. The maque choux didn't seem to have a lot of flavor, but was a colorful side dish. Hush puppies were a bit of a letdown, almost a little gummy inside. As others have mentioned, this place is owned by the same company as Fish City Grill, and this meal was in line with what I've had at those locations - overpriced and modest in quality. Perhaps I'm just too picky for seafood, but this dish had a lot more impact on my wallet than it did on my taste buds. read more

Coming to Plano for dinner meeting, we had agreed to meet at Half Shells. While I waited for the rest of my party to arrive I asked the hostess what's good. She pointed to the numerous signs in the restaurant touting Crawfish season and that they had crawfish. Having never tried them before, I was very interested by the potential new food experience. As the rest of my party arrived we had some of the oyster nachos, which were terrific, and can recommend. We also discussed New Orleans and Crawfish and how I was excited to try them! How have I not known about Half Shells before?! I dine at the shops quite frequently and have never been until recently. I've been missing out!! I ordered the honey chipotle shrimp tacos. My friend order the fish and chips. Both were pretty good. The flavors of the tacos went well together. The fish and chips weren't greasy. As for freshness, it's what you would expect the seafood to be in Dallas. My friend has been here many time before and said everything he's ordered has been good so I'll need to come and try more items off their menu. I met up with a friend for lunch on a weekday so it was pretty busy. He got there a bit before 12 so he was able to get a table easily. I got there at 12 and it was packed. Definitely a popular lunch spot on weekdays. The service here is wonderful. From the hostess to our server, everyone was incredibly friendly. read more

Very informative with what they have to offer! Upon finding out that it was our first time here, he bought us sample cups of all their soups and a sample of their oyster nachos. We ended up ordering the roasted jalapeño soup, something we would've never order if the server didn't give us a sample! We also had oysters on half shell, grilled oysters, mexican shrimp cocktail and grilled fish! All winners, but the grilled oysters were my favorite! This is a great place to visit and have some serious and fresh seafood. I have been here several times within the past three months and the food was always fresh and tasty. Service, at times, can get slower during their busy hours however, for the most part, service is acceptable. The quality of the food is fresh and it is cooked correctly. I tend to have shellfish when I dine here and I have never been disappointed. I have eaten at a few places in this area and each time have thought I want to stop here some time. Well, tonight was the night. I kind of had my mind made up before I went that I wanted crab legs. I was pretty hungry tonight so I also ordered a couple of cup of crab bisque and a fried shrimp platter. I am a big eater. First the bisque. This is a standout here. I mean I am a crab bisque snob and this is some of the best I have had in awhile. Now I have only had it one time so I cannot attest to consistency but tonight it was incredible. My wife had the cream of jalepeno soup which was also stellar but it is not spicy enough for the name, in my opinion. Nonetheless it is a great soup just not as good as the bisque. The fried shrimp I had a slight issue with. You get like six, what I would call small to medium shrimp. Now, when I order fried shrimp I want a dozen but no less than 8. So, to me, this is an appetizer portion given the size of the shrimp. Now, that said, I did have the option to add additional shrimp for .99 each. Had I known prior to ordering about the size of the shrimp I could have adjusted. However, I probably would have been hesitant to pay .99 for shrimp of this size. Finally, on food quality I have zero complaints. Very well battered and seasoned so I have no complaints on that. On the crab legs. We had snow crab legs which is all that was available I believe. Fortunately they can be ordered separately of the potatoes and corn. I just wanted the crab legs. I ordered two bunches which again, my issue was the size. I just felt like these were kind of small. However, I would say the price was right on these. One big complaint was my butter. It came in this tiny little plastic cup which got cold and congealed within seconds, it seemed. I asked our server for a ceramic bowl of butter which she brought. Guess what? It was cold. She did take it back and got it reheated but this was a hiccup. Overall the service was friendly and other than this, no complaints. Overall I will be back and will be having a bowl of the bisque and will be trying a few other items that caught my eye. I feel like the money is right for the most part even with my issues with the portions. While I am a big eater I am not abnormal. I am just on a med right now that makes me eat more. Well I had high expectations for this place, well not really, but they definitely didn't surprise, inspire, bedazzle, or the likes. I will say our waitress was definitely really nice. If she didn't know something she went and found out (as opposed to making something up). She also let us try a few things (sauces and the like) before committing. She definitely gets 4 stars! So let's talk about how this place is a 2. The food was *takes a pause* lackluster at best. We started with the clam chowder and crab bisque. I know they said it was cream based, but goodness. It was not a lovely cream base. What I started to notice was that they used the same cream for the soups and the crawfish etoufee.. or at least the same technique to create it. It's an opportunity for a change. We then ordered the mahi mahi with vegetables and the rainbow trout with a side of cheesy grits. The mahi mahi came out wrong the first time, when it did come out it was bland and the vegetables were half cooked and my spinach half wilted. I was kinda sad. The rainbow trout was prepared better, but the blackened seasoning is a tad bit salty. Lots of potential. The grits, bless its heart, were a runny mess! Yes mess. Not a common word I use to describe food. The upside was that at least it provided a little bit more flavor to the fish. Lastly, I ordered a cocktail. I tried it and it tasted way funny. I asked the bartender did he add soda to it and he was like yea a little. I politely asked if he could remake it. I waited and waited and waited and made it through half my meal and waited some more and eventually it came out after I asked again. Mind you he wasn't THAT busy. It was pretty busy for a weeknight, so I suspect on Thurs/Fri there is even more HH traffic from the nearby corporate offices. We got the shrimp cocktail, which was good but nothing overwhelming. The fried oyster nachos were stellar, although watch out for that pink chipotle mayo... it can get kicky! My lips were tingling. Our server said to come back on Wednesday when the oyster nachos are always $5. Then one in our party also had the honey chipotle shrimp tacos. His exact words were, "It tastes like buffalo wings... but it's shrimp. In a taco!" This was dude food if I've ever seen it. I bet those shrimp are tossed with a bit of Frank's Hot Sauce. Not having Valentine's reservations - we ended up here an hour before closing. Our server was aces - did not make us feel rushed at all. Accurate and friendly service cannot be over-rated. The food was a hit too. The only misses were the crawfish - no spice at all and the weak cocktails. The servings are huge. Wife had her fall back fried shrimp, me my blackened catfish, son had the andouille and shrimp mac and cheese. First, and foremost: I LOVE Rudy the bartender. He's an amazing guy. He's so friendly, helpful, Makes an amazing cocktail and will leave you feeling like you're at home but spoiled like you should be when you're out. Whoever hired him needs to hire all their staff. Now, let's talk food. I wasn't impressed with my first meal I got a few weeks ago. I think some of the meals needs to be more cared for in the details. For instance, Anything with stuffed crab or topped with crab needs to be put into the oven to give it the crispness that all good fish with stuffing so deserves. However, don't fret, I'm sure they will get this under control. In the meantime, do yourself a huge favor and get the Darn Good Burger - it seriously is one of the best darn burgers and with that just skip that fried mess and get the mix of two soups. I had the crab bisque and clam chowder mixed. Eat it fast because it's so decadent and delicious the hotter it is in your tummy. I'm seriously ramping this place up to my top five places to eat but my no 1 favorite lunch spot at the moment. So delicious and it's so nice to go during the China funk. Seriously, do yourself a favor and go now! My only wish is that the barstools were a tad more comfy and if they could add a fireplace I think it would create the best atmosphere but I think that's a future dream to consider. read more

Even though I usually don't have any room after dinner, I find myself putting in an amazing Keylime pie! The place is pretty small but the wait staff is fabulous and cook staff etc. are on top of their game!!! Catfish was just that, fried catfish, very bland. Added hot sauce didn't make it much better. Po Boy was ok ... same as above.
