I would give zero stars if I could. Waited patiently as it was somewhat busy and we were very friendly. As 40 min approached we kindly asked where our food was. Every 10 min they would say it's coming up soon. After 1 hour and 20 min we grew very impatient (we had a football game to attend) only to find out that they forgot to place our order. The waitress said sorry and told us to share our frustration with the cook (said it was his fault). He could care less and said to she a good day and good bye. They didn't offer us anything and didn't seem sorry what so ever. I shared this experience with several people afterwords and they had similar experiences. We did not enjoy our experience or food. Came on St. Patrick's day, they were open late for the holiday. Menu is like a Coney Island. Staff was nice. The place however is dirty. Bathroom nasty. And our food was not enjoyable. The waffle was dry. The chicken which they fried for us per request was just not good (pictured). Finally no one told us that we need to go up and pay so we sat for awhile waiting for the server to come back to collect payment. I had to get up and ask. We will not be returning. read more

I've always passed this place when I'm downtown but this day it was a different - THAT DAY I WAS NOT PASSING IT ANYMORE. **Don't get fooled since their isn't a ton of people** My friend and I agreed to split a breakfast called the "House Skillet" and boy i tell ya - that was a whole lot of skillet. The skillet served 3 types of meat, potatoes, cheese, and an egg on top. I haven't seen a $8 meal better than that at least downtown area. This is a divey place, like I need to walk slow because I might slip the floor is so greasy kind of place. We were looking for somewhere actually open without a line out the door on a Sunday and found this place. The prices are very reasonable. The food is big portions. My friend ordered a side salad and sandwich with side potatoes. The salad had a hair in it (we didn't say anything). The potatoes were good. I ordered the vegetarian skillet, it's a huge portion and the eggs were done well, it was just fairly bland. The environment definitely made us a little nervous. This isn't "dive," like just needs updating, this is dive that needs to be bleached down everywhere and makes you a little nervous about what the kitchen might be like. The service was fine towards our table, everything came out in reasonable time, but our server and the other staff sat at a table about 5 feet from us and complained about a previous customer for literally the whole time. MFing this and that, and I think this person too half the tips before they gave this to us, it just wasn't remotely peaceful or enjoyable. read more

My first impression was that the prices were cheap compared to what I'm used to. The meals were a decent serving and filling! The wait time was average for a diner sort of place. The main issue we had was finding parking in the area as we didn't want to pay the $20 or so it takes to park in a lot. The staff were prompt, although they didn't ask about refills. The resturaunt seemed about 3/4 full when we got there and was practically cleared out by the time we left. This would be somewhere my group and I would go back to, overall. Incredibly disappointing. We ordered coffee and three breakfast meals, including fried eggs and potatoes, oatmeal with toast, and a BLT. After waiting for our food for almost forty minutes, I asked the waitress how much longer we would have to wait and she responded that there were still six tickets ahead of us. Look past the interior because it is not very appealing but the food was delicious! The two cooks cranked out plate after plate of fresh homeade meals. My other half ordered a New York strip steak dinner at 11AM. It came with a choice of homemade soup, salad or cole slaw and fries, roasted potatoes or hashbrowns. He ordered the chicken and rice soup with roasted potatoes. He said the soup very tasty and his NY strip was cooked to a perfect medium. It was also served with Texas toast. I took the opportunity to order chicken and waffles and later learned from the cook that it is the most popular menu item every weekend. The waffle was as large as the plate. You can tell that the batter is not packaged. It was buttery with the perfect amount of vanilla, no added butter or toppings needed. Absolutely delicious! The 6 chicken tenders were the equivalent of two chicken breasts. They were dipped in egg, dreaged in flour and cooked to juicy, crispy perfection! All that and two cups of joe for $21. Good old ham shop. This is your classic Detroit restaurant Coney Island feel. You get the cops, maybe a few housing insecure folks, city workers and the rest. We all come here to get quality food at an affordable price--no frills. I like the employees a lot and they deliver if you work close by. I would always order a turkey sausage breakfast sandwich. Been coming here before they moved from there location across from where now the greektown casino hotel is currently located. The new location is much larger with more seating but same great workers and service. If am eating in or taking out still get the same great taste. Love the fact that they cut the ham right off the bone and cook it on the grill. Have tried everything from omelets, breakfast sandwich, specials and my favorite patty melt with fries. Everything is cooked perfectly and in timely matter. Will always keep coming here as long as they are in business. There doesn't seem to be much in the immediate Greek town area for breakfast, so I stopped in here. I know it is a greasy spoon type place but it was a bit dirtier than I had expected. I sat down at what I thought was a clean table and it wasn't. The server came over and didn't immediately notice how dirty it was. I asked him if he minded wiping the table and he did. Friendly guy. I ordered the home skillet. On the plus it is a ton of food - eggs, potatoes, hash browns, bacon, sausage and cheese with toast on the side or 7.50. I asked for a coffee and water. I noticed the water glass still had trails of milk that had not been rinsed - sort of gross and I didn't see the waiter again after the food was dropped off and didn't bother asking for a new one. The coffee was standard diner coffee. I unfortunately didn't get any refills. Being new, I didn't realize I had to go to the counter to get my check, so I sat a while - my bad. Ever since Woodbridge stopped serving brunch on saturdays, my boyfriend and I have been coming here for breakfast. The Ham Shoppe is a nice, straightforward, no-frills diner. It makes for a cozy place on a rainy morning/afternoon, which is what the weather was like the first time I had ever been there. As for the food? Nothing spectacular--just standard diner fair. But ya know, sometimes you just want standard diner fair, no arugula-pink-sea-salted bullshit. So if you are in the city and want breakfast food, this is a great place to go. for the love of god, don't go to the detroit breakfast club or whatever the hell it's called. that place is awful. But check this place out; it's unpretentious, cheap, greasy and great. as someone else noted, this place is only open for breakfast and lunch. read more

Prices are very reasonable and the food is great, but be prepared to share a table with a stranger because seating is limited. Get an omelet only if you are very hungry. They're only open from breakfast through late lunch, so you either need to be working downtown or visiting the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice. read more

This place came recommended and we were really hopeful! Prices looked good and menu sounded promising for brunch. We got there and were given a table that needed to be wiped down. The place is pretty dirty and worn from the floors to the bathroom area where walls were visibly dirty (splatters on the walls). It took us about 20 minutes to even get waters and our order taken. Then took another 35ish minutes to get our food. It was frustrating because as we were sitting there, people who were seated after us were done eating and left before we even got our food. Food was mediocre, some people at our table got cold potatoes. Toast was hardly toasted and had butter just thrown inside, not spread out. Really good food and at a decent price! My waffles were excellent and the ham was good they give you a lot of ham too! My grits were perfect, not everyone makes grits properly and they give you a lot in a side order i couldnt even put a dent in it, its enough for two people. The place is not fancy at all but its clean and they have great service with plenty of specials. Honestly to me its the best priced place in downtown with great food! The only downside is that they close up pretty early M-F at 4pm Saturday at 3pm Sunday at 2pm i wish they stayed open all day! read more
