This location is much bigger than the one on Culver so there's a lot more inventory. What they don't have here is the soft serve and that is bomb. I came here for the boriya bread because the Culver location doesn't deliver bread until around 2-4pm-ish. It is so much better than white bread, sort of like a croissant/bread hybrid that is nice and thick. Maybe it would be good for French toast but I haven't tried that yet. Put it in the toaster, spread some butter and a little bit of sugar on top (British style). So simple yet so tasty. A very classic Japanese-style bakery. They serve most of the classic Japanese pastries you might expect, like curry pan. Personally, I really come here for one thing which is the strawberry parfait. While I wouldn't say it is anything that special taste-wise, it is prepared so nicely and tastes exactly like what I'd hope for in one so for that reason, I continue to get it. Little bakery located within the Mitsuwa supermarket but you pay them directly rather than at the checkout stand. They have numerous fresh breads and pastries to choose from. I just wanted a snack but couldn't decide between sweet or savory so got a ham and cheese croissant and also a chocolate croissant. The croissants are smaller sized rather than the huge French croissants you probably picture in your head. Both were very enjoyable. One was very ham-and-cheesy and the other had a big chocolate center. The chocolate center was hard but I was eating outside in the hot sun and it quickly became soft and gooey which I really preferred (even though I had chocolate smeared all over my mouth like a two year old). Located inside the Mitsuwa market. Tried the cream puff, green tea cornet, tuna donut and coffee jelly milk. Cream puff- the cream seems to be a mix of pastry cream and whipped cream. It is very light and refreshing with the puff. They don't skimp on the cream either. Green tea cornet- got this because many reviews raved about it but the powder on top was way too bitter for my liking. I couldn't taste anything else at all. This is probably good for those who don't like to eat something too sweet. The lightly crispy croissant pastry is delicious though. Tuna donut - great balance of flavor in this donut. No fishy taste. The tuna seemed to be mixed with some corn and mayonnaise. Would have liked a bit more tuna taste to it though. The donut is nice and solid. Loved the taste of it. Coffee jelly milk- tried this also due to the reviews. There is a crazy amount of coffee jelly in this drink. The coffee is so strong that the taste lingers in my mouth after a while. After binging on Marcha Love, i hope over to this little corner before leaving Mitsuwa. Everything is carefully made, and you don't have to worry about people coughing on your baked goods like at 85c. The Matcha Cornet is my all time favorite, can't visit without trying it. They don't skimp on the matcha powder, bold tea flavor, rich custard consistency, not too sweet. Fruit tarts and curry donut are great too. Solid ice green tea. Hamadaya is an awesome Japanese bakery. All their pastries are super fresh. They have a lot of options that are really popular in Japan. I always get the Curry Pan. The curry consists of potatoes and carrots. I love that its always warm so it feels like it was just freshly made! Melon Pan is also very delicious, it doesn't taste too artificial and the taste of melon isn't overpowering. This is also my favorite place to get a loaf of bread. Love this quaint and authentic Japanese bakery near the cash registers of Mitsuwa Marketplace! The prices are very reasonable and compare to prices I've seen in Japan. The older women who run the shop are always sweet and the bakery even accepts card! They have quality pastries ranging from sweet (but never too sweet) to savory, as well as bread for everyday use. The Green Tea Cornet is absolute perfection. It's basically a cream-filled croissant with the perfect custard-to-bread ratio. The matcha custard has a bold and rich tea flavor but isn't overly sweet, so you don't feel guilty about eating one (or three like me...). You can tell that they use a high quality matcha powder because of its vibrant green color; any matcha that is dull or almost brownish in color is of lesser quality. The cornet itself is flaky and brittle on the outside and light and airy on the inside. The matcha powder on top adds a slightly bitter kick to balance out the sweet custard. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water... I've also tried their Cream Puffs, Strawberry Cream Cheese Danish, and Chocolate Croissant. I have yet to try their savory items but next time I'll order the Curry Donut! They also have sliced Japanese white bread, which is thicker, softer, and more pillowy than overprocessed American white bread. It's perfect with honey drizzled over it for breakfast and takes me back to my breakfasts in Tokyo. Since leaving the Chicago area I haven't been able to find good melon pan and I was SO excited to see they had them. However I was SO disappointed. First off melonpan was cold like it was in a fridge for way too long and it was dry. It had zero flavor besides maybe sweetened air. It was WAY too sweet and lacked every good quality of melonpan. Must try their seasonal breads! I know now people are all crazy about 85c or Paris Baguette, but the price and quality wise, this is a much better place. They used natural yeast to bake their own bread (I know, who cares these days, most people just care about pretty breads) but the taste is definitely superior. They use good ingredients, for example, the walnut bread, they use whole walnut, not the cheaper / lower grade walnut chunks, and raisins too. If I have kids, I will buy breads here for my children over other popular bakeries. I really like their seasonal berries flavor breads too. Hamada-ya is a chain of Japanese bakeries, this particular taking one corner of this Mitsuwa's supermarket section. Small in size, it is actually well stocked with Japan's bakery goods, a delicious yet strange combo of European style baked items and Nippon's own pastry offerings. Having travelled to Tokyo, the fares offered are as close as you can get to the real deal. Their Euro inspired offerings include English Bread (what may look like just like plain sliced white bread, but with a fresher fluffier taste), Fruit/Sour Cherry/Apple tarts/Danishes, Quiche lorraine, English sandwiches (also known as Bento Sandwiches. Crustless white sandwiches cut in half, four halfs per box, multiple offerings per. My favorite), Sweet Cream baguettes (decadent), Cream Puffs (with fresh cream and sweet custard), Cream Cornet (filled with thick sweet buttery cream), Croissants (smaller than the norm, but with a better buttery crust that gives it both flavor without flaking), while their Japanese fares include the Tuna Melt, Curry, Egg and/or Sweet Cream donuts,... ...and way too many more. These are the one I have tried so far, but there is much more to offer for such a small establishment. What's even better is the chocolate-dipped melon pan! The melon pan doesn't really taste like melon, so I'm not sure why it's called that. It's a type of sweet bun with a layer of crisp cookie dough on top. It's not super sweet, but the half dipped chocolate makes it sweeter. If you've been to Japan, you'll understand what melon pan is. It's not easy to find here, but between Cream Pan & Hamada-ya, I would choose Hamada-ya for melon pan! The other pastries are good too, like the green tea cornet.
