Pretty dang good place! It looks like a hole-in-the-wall neighborhood bar but has remarkably good food. I went there with a co-worker and had a great lunch. He went for the BBQ pork shoulder sandwich and it looked pretty good. I was more in the mood for something from the seafood family and was having a hard time deciding between the Cajun crawfish po'boy and the salmon sliders. The waitress sold me on the salmon when she pointed out that they came with a Boursin aioli...I love Boursin! I also went with the onion rings instead of fries. The sandwich was really, really good although the salmon was a bit over-cooked (hence the loss of a star) and the Boursin aioli was everything I hoped it would be...just not quite enough of it on the sandwich. All in all, the flavors were fantastic even if the delivery was a bit off. Also, the onion rings were huge, fresh, hand-made and amazing. The 5 rings I received as a side order (check out the photo I posted) could have easily been an appetizer instead of a side dish. Sometimes bigger is not always better - this was not one of those times. Good service and the whole atmosphere rounded out the experience. I will be back...but I'll try the po'boy next time around. Since I am in the process of making a "Grilled Cheese" list I thought it would be appropriate to update my review. Hammerstone's does offer a grilled cheese and you can choose 2 slices of cheese to add. I love Gouda and so I usually opt for double Gouda-but you can choose swiss, american, cheddar, etc. they have a few options. Then I asked for cranberry juice and that was a little better except they added so much ice that I only taste it twice. The food had small serving and was okay at best. The fried chicken is fantastic! It used to be good fried chicken, but has gotten tremendously better! They have upgraded their breading and you can definitely tell. Both the Nashville hot and regular fried chicken have juicy meat and a great crispy skin. This is pretty much the best place in St. Louis for a spring/summer breakfast. This patio is sublime. Dogs, drink specials, cheap food, good service, unhurried atmosphere, and completely fenced so there's no interference from cars or pedestrians. Dammit, I love this patio! I do wish there was a non-smoking section outside and the sports fans could clean up their language, but it's not bothersome enough to knock a star or anything. read more

The staff was very friendly, energetic, and happy to serve. The menu could use some more healthy offerings. The food was serviceable, at best. We've been here for the Sunday Brunch and it was pretty good but we REALLY loved the patio....nice and big and comfortable. Recently we went back to see Los Carnales play and had a great time! The place was packed but we were lucky enough to find a booth up front (most of the crowd came in about 9:00). We ordered food and it turned out to be extra good....I was impressed! They have the BEST chicken strips, and I consider myself an expert in that regard. I order chicken strips at a lot of places. These are coated in corn flakes and are super crispy and delicious. We came here for breakfast this morning. There's a really cool atmosphere here and the service is awesome. Our server was funny and really sweet but the food was not that great. The pancakes and hash browns both tasted and looked like they were frozen. Do not go for the food. We waited 30 minutes to get water, after we already ordered drinks and appetizers. The service was so slow that by the time we finally got our food it was Luke warm. The wings were slimy and definitely don't get the steak frites. So bad. Parmesan fries (I live fries) came out with no parm and weren't hot. The only thing I would recommend are the pretzel bites with the cheese. Soulard is such a great place to eat but this is not one of the places to eat at. I I had a good time today at Hammerstone's. A friend and I found a spot at one of the patio tables and made ourselves comfortable despite the heat. It took a moment for one of the staff to notice our presence, but part of being human is having patience, though I made a note (as a server myself) that the poor gentleman working the patio could have done more with his steps. Granted, he was managing at least nine tables alone, but the concept of round-pouring comes to mind. Breathe, my man; being twice as efficient is the same as being twice as fast. Vicki, a server who came out to give him a hand, was very attentive once she made it to the table. She was a sweetheart if I've ever met one. Admittedly, the restaurant seemed a little under-staffed, but that's more of an issue with management. For whatever reason, the entire two hours we were there, I failed to notice anyone who struck me as a manager come out to check on the patio. Having noticed us, the drinks arrived in a timely fashion and our appetizers soon followed. The T-ravs were crispy without being burnt, well-seasoned, and matched the sauce perfectly. I cared less for the risotto balls, but that's more a matter of personal preference, I think. They still deserve praise. My grilled firecracker chicken sandwich was spicy, but not overpowering. The fries were crisp and salted to perfection. My only other comment of note is that the music didn't much seem to match the environment except for the odd classic rock song here and there. I've heard good things about the live musicians they host, but can't claim to have seen any there myself. It's a good spot for it. In any case, new-age pop belongs elsewhere. All in all, a good time. It's a nice little oasis in the hellhole that is St. Louis. read more

Racists!!! They refused me service for no reason! I did nothing but ask for a table. The man at the door told me we had to sit outside and that was fine. Once we entered the building the man that was actually hosting this restaurant offered us a table inside(it was raining). The man outside then told us we had to leave because we weren't following the social distancing rules. We literally walked in and were offered one of the 3 tables that weren't labeled for social distancing. I'm young, black, and clearly a threat. read more

Great neighborhood bar with real/relaxed people in the midst of what is becoming whore central in Soulard. Amazingly, you can have a great bar with bartenders that have their clothes on, who woulda thunk? Great bands, an intimate venue & lovely patio, minus the meat market crowd offers a pleasant hideaway. Denny & Lynn are often on hand to say hi and have a chat plus they offer shuttles to and from most home games. This bar does offer breakfast, but please, if you have children, don't bring them to the BAR, it's still a bar. read more

Hammerstone's is a place that if I lived in Soulard, I'd be a regular. And I'd likely feel like a regular. But, I don't live in Soulard. So when I've been to Hammerstone's, I feel like an outsider. Not quite at the level of having Malachi screaming that he has my woman, but there's that that "townie" vibe. And dammit, I live in the city. I'm a townie, just not a Soulardite. Soularian? Soularditarian? Whatever. Anyway, let's start with the pros (only been here for breakfast): 1) Breakfast of Champion - two breakfast entrees and a bottle of White Star (now Imperial Brut). $75. Awesome. 2) Drinks - when they come, they're good. Wife and I have indulged in their Bloody Marys - very tasty. 3) Ambiance - the outdoor patio is wonderful to people watch, to dog watch, to squirrel watch. Indoors (again, breakfast only) is more Gatlin. Cons: 1) Service - if you're sitting outside, it sucks. There's really no other way to put it. You're going to chase down your server and ask for another drink/your check/whatever. 2) The food - OK, maybe it's not truly a con, but it's always been lukewarm. See con #1 above. I'm debating between 2 and 3 stars. But the outdoor seating helps push it to 3 stars. read more

I just expected more out of you Hammerstones.... I came here for lunch on an otherwise, perfect Saturday afternoon. Obviously, with a patio like this, you sit outside on a beautiful day. The wind was slightly biting, but that's our fault, not the restaurant, so I can't hold them accountable for that (just giving you a heads up, there's not a ton of sun to warm you up when it's windy). My boyfriend had spoken fondly of Hammerstones and having never been, we decided to walk over on this particular Saturday. Upon arriving, we picked a table, and sat...and sat....and sat for 20 minutes while the waitress helped everyone but us, and yes, never brought menus. This was just the beginning. After finally taking our drink orders (and taking another 15 minutes to bring us our drinks - a water and an Arnold Palmer) they brought us a water and some odd mixed drink concoction with Vodka. Great...since my boyfriend ordered a drink KNOWN to be non-alcoholic. I then ordered a coffee with the explanation, I wanted to warm up, and she brought me, a luke warm nearly cold cup of joe. Then came our salads. Two plates filled with rotted lettuce...slimy, brown, wet, rancid lettuce. By the time our meals showed up (an overdone steak and an overly greasy piece of grilled chicken) we were more than through with the crappy service and crappy food. We should have known when they asked for our credit card at the beginning of the meal explaining, they had had a lot of run offs recently. Really? No kidding? Never going back. Abysmal experience, overpriced food and quite possibly the worst service I've had in the whole of 2009. read more

Hammerstone's, you got me by the cajones with your awesome patio and onion rings. And that sucks, because your service is ATROCIOUS and the rest of your food is pretty horrible! I went to Hammerstone's yesterday to celebrate the best weather we've had in months on said patio with said onion rings. We arrived in the 11 o'clock hour, only to be told they only serve breakfast until noon on Sunday. Bummer! No onion rings for me. Ok, readjusted and ordered breakfast and sat back to enjoy the weather. This is when I was held captive for 2 hours because of the nonexistent service. Now, I like to linger and enjoy my meal . Don't get me wrong, here, but platters of eggs, bacon, etc, took about 45 minutes to arrive to the table. You know...the kind of food that will arrive in about 5 minutes at any given diner. There was no checking in by our server. She was MIA. In the meantime, I watched tables around us getting their lunch entrees because it took so long. Sheesh, I guess I could have ordered the lunch I came for. By the time they would have arrived it would have been well into lunch service. When the food finally arrived, it was bad. I mean really bad. Soggy bacon, tasteless dry eggs. If you can believe it, even the beignets were disgusting. How do you screw up fried bread in Soulard, of all places? And the server? The wrong plates were placed in front of the wrong people, no checking in, no refilling coffee. I sat there, kicking myself the entire time...because, had I known I would have been forced to order breakfast, I would have visited the awesome coffee garden around the corner. Needless to say, my relaxing morning went to hell. I wish I could say that I would never be back, but I know that would be a lie because of the sweet patio. I will only be back for maybe drinks and an appetizer, though. Never when I'm truly hungry. And definitely not if I have to be anywhere in, say, the next 3 hours. read more

For such a popular venue, I would have expected better. Especially in St Louis' highly renowned Soullard district. My boyfriend, his parents , and myself all sat down for a highly anticipated late breakfast this previous Friday morning at Hammerstone's. At first , we were the only people on the patio, and by the end of the morning only 2 other groups came. Both were served and finished with their meals before we even were given a chance to pay. The reason I mention the quantity of patrons is because it just highlights the ridiculousness of our group waiting almost 30 minutes for some eggs and bacon.... really? There was 1 waitress who absolutely NOTHING special. Very irritated, snarky, quiet, and unaware of her surroundings and duties befitting a waitress; such as simple ketchup, coffee, and syrup refills at our table. Oh well. it's a pub, you get what you pay for in service. The bathrooms are some of the dirtiest I have ever seen (except for perhaps a concert hall or marathon port o potty. Both the mens and womens were nasty. So we went down the road and used the Phillips 66 gas station bathroom. Pathetic. The only reason this place gets a 2 and not a 1 is for two reasons...1) the food was pretty good. I recommend the platters and the egg sandwich...both are extremely well priced, like the rest of the menu. And reason number 2) is the patio was indeed a very nice ambiance. I have not visited at night or during the Mardi Gras season...but i've heard the place is banging and has live music almost any night of the week. I went here for lunch on a beautiful, sunny afternoon, and their patio is ideal for this kind of day. The only reason I didn't give this place a great review was because of the food I had. The person I ate with had the steak sandwich, which was really good and well-prepared. I had what I believe was called a spinach Philly--it had spinach, onions, mushrooms and provolone. It would have been fabulous, except it was absolutely soaking with oil. It literally soaked my plate and napkin. I kind of questioned their judgment at sending out food like that, because it was pretty greasy. I guess it wasn't that greasy, though, because I still managed to eat most of it! Hammerstone's is known for great food, an awesome outdoor patio, and pretty decent local live music. What I love about Hammerstone's is they almost never close! They're one of the few places in Soulard that you can hit up for breakfast (check out the Breakfast of Champions-served with a bottle of champagne) spend the day sightseeing in the city and then come back for dinner (Prime rib rye bread melt) and spend the rest of the evening drinking with friends (they have an awesome selection of beers) and listening to live music. Still giving Hammerstone's 3 stars for being a cool place with a great patio and drink specials, but I do not like their new menu! They got rid of their pizza, which I loved, and the menu just does not seem as appealing since they changed it. I have to admit that their chicken strips are wonderful! I had never tried them before. They are breaded with cornflakes and some spices, and boy are they good! The service still stinks and it took almost an hour to get our food out to us, and we only had 4 people. This bar has it all. One of the best places to go in Soulard anytime of day, Hammerstones is the absolute best neighborhood bar. Typically I would go up to the bar for Breakfast/Brunch. In the summer they have an amazing Buffet that includes a Bloody Mary bar. I typically ordered the Steak and Eggs, which is served all day. This is absolutely perfect for a hangover as you get your protein and your grease all in one setting. Don't forget a screwdriver if you are planning on starting off the day right or a cup of coffee if you need to recooperate a little first. The patio seating in the spring/summer is amazing! The back patio gets a ton of sun and thankfully there are plenty of umbrellas back there or else you would bake a bit before getting your food. The patio is also very dog friendly so dog walkers are welcome to bring their well-behaved best friends in for some water and treats. The inside bar has great character to it. From the original woodwork and light fixtures to the pictures and novelties that line the walls and the bar. The outside is covered during the winter months as well for extra space. The place can get pretty busy at night. The place really comes alive with live music inside. I really enjoyed the Blues bands that would come into the place. Even though it is a small venue, the place was always rocking at night. This is another one of my favorite places to get a Philly, while it isn't an authentic Philly, the peppers and onions really make this one stand out. The bar and wait service has always been exceptional everytime I go and you get a sense that the staff really enjoys the people who come in and their jobs which makes for a great experience. Another reason why I will always come back here is that they run a shuttle to and from Rams, Blues and Cardinals games. All you have to do is buy a beer and get a ticket. Sweet, sweet jazz at this place. We were here roughly 9-12 on a Wednesday night for drinks and music. The guys on stage were mostly older, and had I run into any of them on the street, I could have never guessed how completely badass they are. Seriously, one of the bass players wore a "Barramundi" fish shirt from some Australian vacation probably taken 15 years ago. These were old and nerdy guys, wearing retro glasses, but boy could they play jazz! Friendly (if a bit older) crowd, and the waitress was sweet and attentive. We tried the house shot, "The Thing", for $1 and I couldn't taste any booze whatsoever (very fruity), but for $1, what the hey. I had an old fashioned, which wasn't bad. Not my usual but I got what the birthday boy was having. Wednesday is also $3.50 wheat beer night, which isn't a bad deal. Hit this place up for great local music! read more
