Hanbat is one of my typical stops if I am at K-town. The best part is that they are open 24 hours a day! It has the normal wooden seating for 2 or 20 surrounded by scurrying servers. I like their selection of small dishes even though there are some I can do without and I'd always need about 3-4 more dishes of some of my favorites. A few of my usual dishes from here would be the Gobdol Bi Bim bab, Soon Du Bu chigae, Kimchi Chi gae, and Galbi tang. I'm going to have to expand my choices a bit more soon but I'm so use to getting those dishes here. read more

I'd say this place is great for 1-4 people but could fit maybe 2-3 parties of 10 people? The free side dishes were pretty good. We also got a free 4pc dumpling from checking in with Yelp. I thought the service was pretty good as well. I ordered the kimchi chi gae (13.95) mild and at first it didn't seem that spicy but it felt like the soup was burning hot after a while :0 I really liked the chi gae though. My boyfriend got beef bibimbap (18.95) and he seemed to like that as well. They were both a decent size. We usually eat a lot but I got full without even eating the little rice that came with the chi gae. Hanbat is mediocre at best. The prices are super expensive and the food is not that impressive. It's just missing flavor. Whenever I go to a Korean restaurant, I always look at their side dishes: how many are there, how many times do they refill, is it tasty? That's my barometer for how the rest of the meal will unfold. If the banchan is bangin', I know that the main course will be delicious. But, when the kimchee sucks, or the banchan lacks flavor, it doesn't matter after that, because I know that I'll be full, but not completely satisfied. Flavor is so important in Korean cuisines, I can't stress this enough! I enjoyed my company but I'm not planning on ever eating here, again. Sorry, Hanbat, no bat for you. The tofu soup is hot and wonderful. Just remember that your food will be fairly saltless, so you should add salt or chose something other than the plain versions of food. Overall very good if you're looking for simpler food that seems a bit more authentic than the bigger, gaudier places. read more

Delightful place! Hostess was happy to see me and seated me, a table for one, on a bustling night with no attitude. She is lovely. Then I had the best waitress who provides great service and claps and is happy when you eat your barchan. I'm happy too with the generous portions of home cooked Korean food from the 7 welcome-to-our-house bowls of complimentary banchan to the huge mandoo dumplings to my cauldron of soon dubu chi gae tofu stew. I asked for purple rice and the waitress was happy. I ate 2 huge dumplings and tried all the banchan (barely made a dent) and she cane over and encouraged me to keep trying. Lol. I needed to save room for my stew. The place is mostly young Koreans in their 20s-40s. Not sure why they have an average of 3.5 stars but I disagree. Not fancy food but deeply satisfying. Ambiance: def less crowded and shorter wait than ktown that is only a few blocks over! Service: attentive for sure and nice people! Food: Reviews on generous portions are correct. Their duboki is a little different from what I am used to, it isn't really spicy at all and the sauce is less red than usual (check out my photo) I wasn't a major fan of it but if you like less spicy you might like it. The Bulgogi was delightful and well marinated! order it! The pork bimbimbop wasn't bad, not the best I've had but it's up there! my friend and i came here because the wait at the restaurant nearby was ridiculous but we got seated here right away even though it was 7pm in midtown! we ordered the bibimbap and it was excellent and came with side dishes--very quick service. one of the servers even helped mix our bibimbap for us haha. would def recommend and come again! read more

Hanbat is a very solid lunch spot on 35th St. Its not incredibly remarkable in any way - the decor is dark and asian, the service incredibly quick and perfunctory, the food good. The banchan (small side dishes) were all okay, but nothing really wowed me. My friend and I had an hour and a half lunch where he had the soon dou bou ji gae and I had the stone bowl bim bimbap (Gobdol Bi Bim Bab). The value is average for the neighborhood, but the food was delish and hot, so it made me really happy and full. read more

My friends have been recommending I give Han Bat a try, but it took a while because we have great Korean food in L.A. Top notch. But I was in the area, freezing in NYC...so it was time. We were seated quickly and greeted by a smiling waitress. My DH looked at me and said, are we in an Asian restaurant? A smiling waitress? It's true. She was upbeat, smiling, happy to see us, happy to take our order. We've been so accustomed to indifferent, rude service. The kind where they often throw forks down because my husband is "white." Panchan excellent. The tofu stew was so delicious and perfect for a winter's day. We lapped that right up. The bibimbap was delicious too, we spread it out so some of the rice would get crispy. The stone bowl was hot enough. Prices affordable. The only bad thing was they were pretty slow to refill our hot tea which was very diluted. We had to ask each and every time. More tea. More tea. The food is salty, you need hot tea. Please. And for "dessert," they only give you one orange slice a piece, and it was awful. We are accustomed to getting several. Minimum one orange cut up so that you know, you get at least one juicy slice and end your meal on a juicy, not dry, not limpid, note. read more

Literally had to try to call someone over for 5 minutes before I could ask for an empty bowl. Restaurant is nicely decorated. Has a korean traditional theme going on. I found this restaurant in my NY guide book but I was dissapointed! I was expecting a good food since it is in K-town area, however it did not turn out to be the way I wanted. The appetizer kimchi and other nibbler dishes were not good. Their Pajun was kind of bland and lacking something. It was also overpriced. My friend had Chicken Teriyaki and I found my homemade Chicken Teriyaki much better. The service is not great either. By the way the bathroom is very old, dark and disgusting too. Was really hungry walking around NYC so we came across this place looking at their yelp rating. We got seated right away and started looking at the menu. I was with two other people and one of my friend's went to the bathroom while our server came to take our order. My friend who stayed at the table and I ordered one order of bibimbap and one order of spicy tofu soup. Our waitress looked at us and asked how many people we had and I said "three" and that we'd be sharing the two entree's with each other. Then our waitress just glares at us for a good minute and leaves saying something under her breath. We got our entree's and started eating it and splitting it up. Our waitress NEVER came back to our table to check up on us even when I tried getting her attention. NEVER gave us refill's on water either. I guess she was upset that we only ordered two dishes for three people? ALL three of us ended up being really full from the meal even though we split it. So I stumbled here at 1.30am in the morning after a night out. It's located next to the hotel I was staying at, Hotel Metro, and when we saw that it was 24/7 we decided why not? Might as well try out some Korean food in NY even though there's a bunch in LA haha. What's a must get? Seafood pancake of course! We were really surprised actually when it arrived. It's a little different from the usual ones. They were more crunchy and a lot less oily than how many spots do them. I think this was the best seafood pancake I've ever had just based on the texture. I'm a sucker for anything crunchy or crispy. We also ordered some lakkboki. I liked it a lot too. Spicy, lots of ricecake and fishcake. The spiciness just opens up your appetite so well! We also wanted some soju but a friend of ours don't like it plain but Hanbat doesn't have any flavored soju. The waiter was nice enough to mix some lemon soda with soju in a tea kettle for us hahah. Just like any place in ktown, it is super packed and there's a wait during dinner time. But while you wait they have you look at the menu and take your order. Their way of speeding up the process once you're seated so it's faster to get your food. Price point is reasonable since ktown prices can get steep. Here I was introduced to bibimbap. Since then, I have yet to find a Korean restaurant in Nor Cal that serves bibimbap just as good as theirs...it sucks! I crave Hanbat more and more with each disappointment. The seafood pancakes are also very good. For a fairly small restaurant, they accommodated our party of nine very well. I went here with a friend and it was delightful!!! To me this place was all about the food which was very good!!! We got the Bul go ki and a few other things and all were quite delicious the beef was soo tender and flavorful. The soelongtong was so-so, the samgaetang have no flavor of ginseng whatsoever, and the banchan were bland. Is this the best korean food you'll ever get? Probably not. But is this some of the best korean food you'll get at 3am on a Tuesday night? Very possibly. I've been coming here for years with coworkers after a late night of drinking, and I must say we all universally love the food. I was not impressed with Hanbat. I ordered a kimchi jigae and it was okay at best. There really wasn't much savory flavor and was just kind of sour. I've definitely have had better elsewhere. My friend ordered the seol long tong (forgive my spelling) and she thought it was really bland. She ended up adding lots of salt and hot sauce to raise the flavor profile. Normally this review would have generated 3 stars, but the interaction at the end with the server took it a notch down. She basically came up to us and said you've been sitting here for a long time, pay now. This was about 10 - 15 minutes after we received the check. I understand where she is coming and if the restaurant was packed and busy, we would've rolled out of there even faster, but there were a number of empty tables. And I would of appreciated it if she gently suggested we take a look at the bill before she came out guns blazing. Needless to say, I probably wouldn't return and I'm mainly basing my opinion on the food. read more

I went here before to celebrate my friend's birthday and it was a nice experience, which is why I decided to come back tonight with my family and friend. However, the whole experience was very disappointing. The service here is extremely rude. It is almost as if they don't want to serve you or anything. We were constantly being eyed at throughout our meal that we felt pressured to rush our meal and pay the check right away. Another thing that was disappointing was that the side dishes were not free, they only came with the meal you order. I was told that to get a refill for side dishes would cost extra, which is usually not the case. I ordered the bulgogi, dukboki, the scallion pancake, and the free boiled dumplings to share among my group. The dukboki was definitely spicy and it had ramen noodles with it too! The rice cakes were chewy and the fish cake was good as well. It also had bits of pig intestine and beef. It was definitely a different version of dukboki than the one I tried elsewhere. The scallion pancakes were good as well, but it was heavier on the flour side. There was more dough than filling. The boiled dumplings were alright, but nothing special. The bulgogi was the best part. It comes with one bowl of rice only. But, the marination was done super well and the meat was tender like it's supposed to be. I would say if you come here to try the food, you must definitely try the bulgogi! I wouldn't come back again after tonight's experience, but maybe it was just a bad day for the restaurant. This is my usual go-to place in Ktown since it doesn't get as packed as quickly as other dinner places nearby. The food portions fairly big, and I've never had any misses with the dishes I've tried. Hanbat might not be as flashy or trendy as some other places, but don't let that deter you from the food quality. The only thing keeping me from giving 5 stars is the fact that every time I come here, it seems like this place is so understaffed because of how long it takes to get servers' attention. Even when I came with a friend for a late lunch on a Sunday, the place wasn't even half full but there was one lady waiting all the tables. We were basically just watching and waiting for her to finish attending to everyone, which took a good 20 minutes or so. I'm okay with this place. I would only go here for two items and two items only!! Say it with me: "Bul Go Ki & Pajun. " The Bul Go Ki is sizzling thin sliced beef w/onions and Pajun is pancake w/green onions, octopus, shrimp & other shell fish. I've had other items here and it doesn't taste any where near as good as other restaurants. They're dishes are not even spicy (like Bibim Kook Soo Spicy or Kimchi Bok Eum Bab).
