Great spot to beat the heat. Staff is super friendly and hooked us up w some samples since it was our first time. I went w the simple mango w soft serve gelati italiano style. The mixed ones w multiple flavors can get really sweet for those w a sweet tooth! I like how creamy it is! Small areas both indoor and outdoor to sit or stand. FUN FLAVORS! We opted for a cup of "all the flavors" combined and although we couldn't detect any distinct flavors, it's the perfect treat for a hot summer day. The dessert was obviously sweet but not too sweet which is always nice. We were amazed by how the ice texture was very fine and took a while to melt. Prices were reasonable and workers were very nice and got our order ready even before I had finished paying. Parking is very limited and we recommend finding free parking in the neighborhood next to the right of the store. There's also a cute photo opp with the art mural on the wall outside of the store. If we are ever back in the area again, we'll definitely be back for a quick stop. Location is next to a pretty lively area with lots of shopping and restaurants so don't hesitate to grab a scoop of their ice and take a quick walk around the neighborhood. read more

My kid singing " happy ice happy ice " the ENTIRE BIKE RIDE TO HAPPY ICE! Very annoying but she KNEW something I didn't. Philly water ice I've always wanted to try from watching parking wars on TV and hearing about it! Never did I imagine as we pulled up to the store front, that it would be my lucky day! People waiting outside for the place to open, yes ITS THAT POPULAR! Friendly staff, delicious water ice! Much needed in that particular stuffy too packed full of people neighborhood. Just so happened to catch them Sunday at smorgasbord and the line Was long. Brought a friend to their booth and made her buy one! The owner, my guy! Sooooo so friendly ! Absolutely love the inside of the store it's picture perfect and colorful. The girl at the window was super bubbly and very helpful when asked about flavors. The service was fast & easy. The happy ice is sizes are more then enough. My family and I got the regular which was beyond filling and the flavors we got were DELICIOUS. Came by at 9:05pm since Apple Maps says they close at 10pm. The door was unlocked, but I was told they were closed. If they close earlier, they really need to lock the doors at 9pm on the dot and update their hours online to avoid confusion and wasted trips read more

Been hearing about this place, but I never got around to it. My husband and I were walking around at Downtown Disney and finally saw the truck and we knew we had to check it out. I asked the gentlemen what did he recommended and we ordered a kid size summer time and time machine. The kid size was actually pretty big and this was perfect for the heat! If I can describe what happy ice is I would say it is related to sorbet and italian ice, but softer and not too sweet. The summer time consisted of mango, watermelon, and strawberry lemonade. The time machine consisted of cherry, mango, and pineapple. My husband likes ice cream, but he doesn't always finish it. However, happy ice...he devoured it. We met up with some friends later that day and my husband ordered seconds! read more

Finally got to try Happy Ice... I was late to the game even though I had known about it for a while. We were around the Burbank area when we spotted the Happy Ice truck. They were out of most flavors by the time we got there. We went with 2 Time Machines (cherry, mango, pineapple) in medium. $5 each. It was good. Not as hard as an italian ice but more firm than a sorbet. You definitely have to eat it with a spoon. The spoon they provide is a color changing one. The flavors were good and distinct. They werent just colors to be colors. You could tell the flavors apart. I liked the cherry and pineapple more. The mango flavor wasnt as sweet as I'd like. It was a nice refreshing icy dessert treat. It wasnt as light as i thought. It kind of spoiled my appetite for dinner as we had it around 6pm. The medium was plenty for me. We hope to try the other flavors next time that were sold out. Strawberry and blueberry sound good. Service was friendly enough. We were the 2nd to last customers. Then they closed up the truck and left. They do take credit card payments. read more

If dessert in general doesn't make you happy, well you must be a soulless, mindless zombie wandering this planet. BUT there's one place that may be able to redeem you - Happy Ice. Oh a throwback to the elementary school days when Buongusto would bring its trailer for Italian ice to campus during lunch and after school. If I'm not mistaken, they closed down years ago and no longer have their "trucks" or trailers roaming around. But in recent years, there have been a number of shaved ice and ice-dessert shops and trucks popping up, mostly Hawai'ian style shaved ice, which, unless you're in Hawai'i, just don't meet the same mark as on the islands. Bring in Happy Ice, the popular shaved ice truck making its rounds through Los Angeles and Southern California. You are instantly met with some of the best hospitality and service from any place around. The joyful, fun, cheering staff interacting with anyone and everyone, simply spreading what their name entails - happiness! I went with what was popular but also the recommended for first timers - the Rainbow Rocket, a combination of every flavor on hand in one large cup! For about $6, you get a good size cup and I kid you not, the best shaved ice there is. This is just like the Italian shaved ice I remember as a kid, except, and sad to say, it isn't filled with all the food dyes and colors and artificial flavors (sad because as a kid that's what we were stuck with from the other trucks!). The menu is labeled as dairy free, fat free, and vegan, which is astounding and so hard to believe because although all the absence of those don't delineate from good food, it's amazing how this shaved ice is still so delicous! The ice is cold, fresh and refreshing, and the flavors are so real and delicious, you get hit with a little sweet, a little tart, some sour some light, between the watermelon and pineapple and coconut and lemon and everything! Happy Ice is a must when you're around it! read more

I've heard of Happy Ice before but didn't get motivated to try them until I saw the show The Black Ink Crew. Lemeir Mitchell is the founder and CEO of Happy Ice, a Philly water ice treat. After I saw him on the show and his business, I immediately went to the website to check out locations. While online, I noticed that they offer catering. My daughter's birthday was coming up and we always like to bring a special treat to her classmates. I decided to go ahead and book them. They offer different catering options. The easiest for me was the cooler. I got the $215 cooler which included 30 servings. You can add more servings if need be. Communication was great between Jordan and me. She was very prompt when responding to my emails and was patient with me when making last-minute changes. As we got closer to the date of pick-up, my daughter and I decided to head over to try it. Yes, we should've tried it before we booked them but I knew we would like it. Coincidentally, during our visit, Jordan was there! She is even nicer in person! She helped us and she made me feel confident in my catering decision. And of course, we loved it! On the day of pick-up, everything went perfectly! I got there on time and the order was ready! They helped me load the cooler in my car and they included color-changing spoons! When I arrived at my daughter's school, the ice was still perfect and not even close to melting. I first found out about this place after working on the kelly Clarkson show because we did a couple of events with this company. it's SO cute inside and everyone is so helpful and so happy. My friend got the red white and blue one because it reminded him of the fire cracker fourth of july popsicle lol but I made my own and mixed two flavors -- strawberry lemonade and mango. I topped it with the oat milk gelato and it was ELITE. the ice is so smooth it doesn't even feel like frozen flavored ice that i'm normally used to. next time im going to go in and ask for them to just do the oat topped in a cup because that little dollop is not enough . love this black owned business!! i'll definitely be back which is huge for me because I am NOT a dessert girl! read more

Amazing ice cream and shaved ice. They have classic popsicle flavors converted into shaved ice and it's amazing. My favorites are the Time Machine, which is reminiscent of the Big Stick popsicle, and the Rainbow Rocket, which is a shaved ice version of Bomb Pop. Cute and colorful spot on Melrose with trendy shaved ice desserts. My friend and I both did the option to pick 3 flavors. I did Cherry, Mango, and Blueberry. My favorite one was the Blueberry, but I'd still recommend getting a mix of flavors to try a few and it looks fun ;) I thought the price was a little steep especially because the serving size was really big and I couldn't finish it. We got the smallest option they had too. Wish they had a smaller one that was cheaper. read more

This place rocks :) They are located on Melrose but also have a food truck and catering services. Came by on a Sunday afternoon where there was barely anyone inside. I like how colorful and pretty it is inside. It is a small space but it's clean and there is a small seating area in the corner. Also the workers are kind and provide a prompt service. Our order was ready in less than 5 minutes :) My girlfriend had the Rainbow with Soft Top and and I had a custom combination without soft serve. I was really satisfied with the way mine tasted and the one my girlfriend ordered was also pretty great. The sour apple in particular was a really delicious flavor! We will absolutely come back here to try all the other combinations. An easy 5 stars for Happy Ice! read more

Happy Ice is FABULOUS! They were parked outside of Ontario Mills mall, and let me tell you, their marketing person is a genius. The big, bright colored truck caught my eye right away. I didn't even want a treat but I had to have it! I LOVE shaved ice. If you've had Bahama Bucks I would compare the texture. Their flavors are bright and delicious. Very fruity and packed with flavor. Nothing like it and the best desert in Los Angeles if not the world! NOT hyperbole just COLD facts :) The only issue with happy ice is that they only have a single location and a couple trucks. I would give an arm and a leg for a franchise but until they offer me one i am content being their best customer. Why are they so great? To start with all the best deserts are cold. Ice cream, shave ice, gelato, and on and on. Happy Ice is cold but soft and slides perfectly into your spoon clean and simple every time. The ice is soft and delicious and goes down smooth as ICE ICE BABY. For such a light lift it explodes with flavors. I love the watermelon, apple, cherry but don't buy out my favorite flavors please. But the best part, so sugar high or sticky mess. Like I said the best desert in the World! read more

My grandson had to set up my account to be able to appreciate the experience at Happy Ice. The young lady Sandra was amazing. She did beautiful work especially being alone with the store filled. We walked in after two parties of probably 6 to 9 and the quick service was top dollar. I liked how she told us she had big orders ahead of us but the wait will be worth it. I admire her hustle as she did order after order on top of door dashers coming in without breaking a sweat. I tried tipping her for her hard work (because she was right, the wait was so worth it) but she smiled saying she can't accept cash but she can accept a review to show her boss her work. Here I am! This spot is one of those unique places you never forget about. I went here years ago when I was last in the area, and my partner and I frequently talk about how much we enjoyed it. Definitely a place I would recommend! It's a fun ice cream spot that is thinly shaved ice cream with some amazing flavor combinations. I ordered rainbow rocket because it featured ALL the flavors so why not indulge right? I absolutely loved it! Reminded me of a big stick popsicle but in slushier form and with a ton of more flavor. As of now, they only allow one party to come in and order at a time, lucky for us there wasn't too many people so we got in & out pretty quick. read more

This place is pretty good for frozen ice treat. The ice is super fine and smooth and with the soft served or whatever it is on top its delicious. The reason the star is knocked off on this review is because its not as good as ritas italian ice. even though the texture is the same, ritas has better and more flavor options as well as the custard they serve is fluffier and better. For LA though happy ice is not a bad option, i just most likely would rather make the drive for a ritas. read more

Happy Ice is just the most delightful sweet treat ever. Starting with the name, "Happy Ice," followed by the psychedelic rainbow truck, and the colorful icy sweets, everything is just so happy. They have a brick and mortar but also food trucks around LA. We stopped by when one of their trucks was in Altadena. We ordered the Rainbow Rocket, which is all the flavors offered mixed into one cup, and the Time Machine, which is a Big-Stick-esque mix of cherry, pineapple, and mango. Sizes are per your preference: S,M,L, and pints. I found a medium to be more than enough for a single serving and a L is really for sharing or having extra. The texture is like a sorbet, a very smooth ice with no icy crystals at all. The flavors are delicious and we really enjoyed both the Rainbow Rocket and the Time Machine. We are Big Stick fans, so we loved the Time Machine combo of mango, pineapple, and cherry. You can also create your own mix of flavors. We'll definitely be looking out for Happy Ice returning to our area because this is just delicious. read more

Hired this food truck for a large private event and I was so happy with it. Both employees were super friendly and when I checked in on them about 15 minutes before service was to begin, one of them offered to make me a cup. So thoughtful of vendors to do that for the event planner. Next time I would consider limiting flavors to speed up the line a bit and eliminate people taking forever to order, but all things considered a great experience and they served very quick. Their process was the best I have experienced when hiring a food truck, and I have had contact with many over the years. I will hire this truck again. read more

How cute is this place? The shop name speaks for itself, for I was instantly sold with all the cute decor inside and the fun colors everywhere. There was a small line forming prior to opening. We waited about 20 minutes for our order to be made. We shared the Sunset Beach and added the Snow Cap. Probably best to skip the snow cap. I didn't taste the condensed milk at all. The flavor is delicious. Towards the bottom of the shaved ice, there wasn't anymore flavor though.

I am not one of those people but I do understand the sentiment. When a restaurant becomes an institution there is always the risk that it coasts. So I will say this clearly. It is not coasting. We came on a Friday night, reservation made weeks in advance because my assistant knows better than to leave it last minute. The room has this energy that I find difficult to describe to someone who has not been. It is lively without being loud. There is money in that room but it does not announce itself and I find that refreshing. I spend enough time around people who need to be seen. We ordered omakase style and let the kitchen guide us and this is absolutely the correct way to experience Matsuhisa. The black cod with miso is legendary for a reason and I do not typically enjoy when a dish lives so heavily in its own reputation. This one earns it every single time. The yellowtail with jalapeño is another dish that sounds simple until you taste how balanced it actually is. There is real technique beneath what looks effortless and I respect that enormously. My husband had the sake pairing and was very pleased. I stayed with a Burgundy I brought because I called ahead and the corkage situation was handled gracefully and without attitude. That matters to me more than people might expect. Where I have mixed feelings is the service. Our server was warm and knowledgeable but the pacing between a few of the courses was uneven in a way I noticed. It did not ruin the evening but at this price point and this level of reputation it is the kind of thing that should not happen. Nobu Matsuhisa built something real here and it shows. This is not a restaurant riding on nostalgia. It is a restaurant that still has something to prove and mostly succeeds.

I wish the smoked dashi ramen had the option to choose between clams and pork. For dessert I was really excited to try their banana pudding and also got their matcha kaki-gori (shaved ice). Although the banana pudding was not bad, it was the kaki-gori that blew my mind. The tonchin honey cream sauce was absolutely delicious. The overall texture of the kaki-gori was perfect, not chunky at all. And best of all, this was free thanks to the Blackbird app promotion! I also had the chicken katsu, which came with miso soup, rice, and salad. I think the chicken katsu here had the perfect crunch and the sauce / rice that came with it was delicious. The miso soup was also quite tasty. Word of advice from the server was to purchase the combination, which allowed me to get everything I wanted for steep discount in comparison to buying everything aforementioned individually. One downside was that only street parking is available.

When my partner and I arrived at around 9:45 on a Sunday night, there were two gentlemen working and about eight people in line. While waiting our turn to order, I could already see that it was a fairly slow process due to the amount of work required to make each individual rolled ice cream serving. But, it looked interesting so we chose to wait knowing that it would probably not be very quick (but I would never have guessed that it would take a whole hour). It turned out that in addition to the 8 people in line, the online orders were coming in at the same time. The two workers were not enough to make all of the online orders plus the in person orders. While we sat there waiting for an hour, we watched multiple people walk in to pick up their online orders that were all being made ahead of ours. There was no way to know that there was going to be an hour wait to get two ice cream servings with only eight people ahead of us in line. There should either be some type of warning of the actual wait time or they need to add more workers. The two servers who were there were very nice and were certainly doing their best, but it's just not set up well. I would never have chosen to stay if I had known the actual number of orders that were ahead of us in line (it was a lot more than 8). Maybe that's why there is no warning. But as a result, I would never go back to Holy Roly nor would I recommend anyone else go there (unless they have a lot of time on their hands). I appreciate when businesses care about customer experience. That does not seem to be the case here.
