First things first, go there as early as you can, go there and wait for the door to open. That means go there at 10 am or 5 pm when the business opens to avoid waiting. I arrived at 10 am, and about 20 people were already waiting at the door. Once we were seated and got served, new customers were waiting for empty tables outside. Every Chinese loves Chinese food, but for me, not that much, although I still enjoy some dim sum occasionally. The inflation is high, especially in Chinese restaurants. It can easily cost $30+ for just one plate of 8 pieces of fried buns and one bowl of Taiwanese thin noodle soup. Plus tips, it's more than $35, whereas you can probably get those for $5 in China. I haven't been to a Chinese dim sum restaurant in over a year. Firstly, there aren't any dim sum options near me; secondly, I can make them myself. Nowadays, you can even buy good quality pre-made dim sum online. I don't mean the typical consumer-level frozen packages; I mean good quality restaurant-level pre-made dim sum. Happy Together is located on the first floor of the Holiday Inn, El Monte, a typical Chinese residential area. Several Chinese banners about EB-5 investment visas were hung across the street. I guess most of the servers in the restaurant speak better Cantonese than Mandarin or English. There are three types of dim sum restaurants. One type is where you buy the dim sum at the counter and bring it to the table yourself, like Yum Cha Café in multiple locations. The second type is the traditional Cantonese teahouse style, where servers pull a cart filled with fried dishes and steaming foods in bamboo steamers. Customers can pick the food when the cart passes by, like at New Capital Seafood Restaurant in Rowland Heights. The third type is the order-cook-serve style, which is usually more expensive but my favorite, as it ensures the dishes are freshly made. Happy Together is the last type, where you order and wait for the food to be served. The service was quick--only several minutes after placing the order, especially since we arrived early and ordered early. We were three people, and we had 8 dim sum dishes and a two half-chicken combined plate. Let's talk about them: Steamed Beef Tripe w/Ginger $6.38 No obvious ginger flavor, which was okay for me. The beef tripe was thick and tender, with good texture and no odd smell. 8/10 Steamed Bean Curd Roll $5.88 The menu said "Oyster Oil flavor," but I couldn't taste it, which was fine. The filling was a mix of minced pork, black fungus, and bamboo shoots, with a texture even better than the Steamed Beef Tripe. 9/10 Shrimp Dumpling w/Chives $6.38 I'm bored of pure shrimp dumplings (Har Gow), so my friend Danny ordered the one with chives. There was no noticeable chives flavor, but it still worked for me. As a Buddhist, chives are actually forbidden. The chives were mild, the shrimp fresh, with good taste but no highlights. 7/10 Char Siu Puff $6.38 I'm not a fan of either Char Siu Puff or Char Siu Bun, but this one was good. However, I wouldn't rate it more than 7/10. Beef & Cilantro Rice Noodle Roll $7.38 The texture was good, and the taste was great. The beef was tender and flavorful, but it felt a bit expensive for the portion. 8/10 Housemade Beef Ball $5.88 The menu mentioned "tangerine peel flavor" in the beef ball, but I couldn't detect it. Nonetheless, the beef ball itself was excellent--soft, spongy, and juicy. I'd give it a 9/10. Singapore Fried Rice Noodles $16.88 I'd give this dish a 9/10. The menu said "rice noodles," but they looked more like wheat noodles. This was my first time having Singapore Fried Noodles without beef or shrimp, making it more of a vegan dish, but it still tasted good. Not oily at all, and no burnt smell, which was a plus. However, the price was steep--$17 for vegan noodles? Steamed Chicken and Soy Sauce Chicken combined plate $21.88 x 2 This was a disappointment. The chicken was served beautifully with a candle burning underneath the plate, giving it a nice presentation. However, the Steamed Chicken was not cooked through. I understand that Chinese cuisine sometimes serves chicken with a slightly bloody bone, which I usually like, but this one was undercooked--especially the meat near the bone, which wasn't cooked at all. Aside from that, the chicken was tasteless. I eat very lightly seasoned food, but even I felt this lacked proper seasoning. Overall, this restaurant is very lightly seasoned, which seems like a misunderstanding of Cantonese cuisine. When you reduce the salt and sauce, you need to compensate by enhancing the flavors in other ways. It's a very good restaurant, and I would score it 88 out of 100. Since it was our first time, we wanted to try everything to see if this could be a new dim sum spot we could add to the rotation. Like a few of the other newer dim sum spots, they give you a sheet and pencil for you to tick the items you like (with both English and Chinese). All their rice rolls were great! The price for tea $2.50 is on the pricey side, but we thought they gave a decent amount of tea leaves (in comparison to other places). Located in the Holiday Inn - El Monte, there's plenty of daytime parking for the dim sum crowd and external benches for your wait - waited half an hour for a table for four on a Tuesday! They don't have any elaborate dim sum such as gold flake, truffle, squid ink, but they have very good, tasty and hot dim sum. Service was good with many hot water refills of our powerful Kok Bol, grease cutting tea, and ice water refills. Patrons could order a whole or half duck or goose which they position hanging at the table. Different! Steamed items were plump and tasty, fried and baked items appropriately hot and crispy. My partner's family had a get-together here during the week. Heck, I did not know this place existed, and I'd pass by here alls the times en route to LABC. It makes sense though. Every decent hotel should have a decent place for dim sum downstairs. Alas! we decided to meet for dinner, so no low-lit totaling at this hour. Plenty of parking around 6:30pm, and while business was healthy there were still plenty of tables to go around. The interior decor is elegantly designed, from the white walls and curtains to the pale floorboards, which contrasted well with the large, black chairs. Since our group spoke in mostly Cantonese, one of the waitstaff enjoyed a banter with us. When I noticed we were missing a soup bowl, they promptly went to retrieve another one. The dishes were served in a timely manner as well. Among the selections of the night, the main menu item was the coconut crispy chicken which can be ordered whole where you tear away at it. Alternatively, and the route we went with, the chicken is chopped into pieces and traditionally plattered. The skin was indeed crispy with the meat moist, and when dipped in lemon juice and salt made the dish very satisfying. For service, it definitely depends where you're seated, if you're seated anywhere close to the counter/bbq warmers you'll have to be calling for waiters especially during rush hour. It gets pretty busy even after 12! Most of the customers seemed to be Cantonese, and the restaurant admittedly seems a little small for a typical Chinese restaurant (but it is located in a Holiday Inn, which makes sense). I've come around 1-2 pm on the weekdays and still have had to wait for a seat. Last Saturday (Jan 11), I wanted to have dim sum for brunch, but there were too many people waiting. It was around 11:15 AM when I checked in, but the waiting list was long. The system showed 16 tables ahead of me, and I had no idea how long I would need to wait. Therefore, I gave up and decided not to wait. Today is Sunday (Jan 19), and I decided to try Happy Together Dim Sum. This is my second visit here but my first time trying their dim sum. Based on my experience last Saturday, I avoided coming between 10 AM and 1 PM, as that's the rush hour for brunch and lunch. I arrived close to 2 PM. A late lunch is usually less crowded, and I noticed that nearly 50% of the dining hall was empty. This was a good time for me to enjoy dim sum today. Honestly, the price and quality of the dim sum don't quite match. Some of the dishes were okay, but others didn't meet my expectations. Rice Noodles: The filling wasn't inside the rice noodles but rather wrapped around them. The taste was okay, even when it got cold, and the texture remained chewy. Siu Mai: The taste was disappointing. Traditional shrimp Siu Mai should have a balanced flavor of pork and shrimp, but this version didn't. Instead, it tasted like shrimp with too much starch and an overpowering garlic flavor. Shrimp Dumplings: The skin was chewy when cold but too soft when hot. The filling had a strong garlic flavor and lacked the aroma of sesame oil. Chicken Feet: The secret sauce was fine--it seemed to be made from garlic, chu hou paste, hoisin sauce, and sesame oil. However, the texture of the chicken feet didn't meet my expectations. Properly cooked chicken feet should have soft, sticky skin, similar to pork feet, with a rich collagen texture. These didn't have that. Beef Balls and Ox Tripe: I was satisfied with these dishes, though the ox tripe had too little sauce. One thing I noticed is that almost everything contained garlic. While garlic can enhance flavors, in this case, it overpowered the natural taste of the food. The service, however, was excellent, which is why I gave them a 5-star rating. The pork and shrimp dumplings in the hot sauce and oil was tasty but the meat had a very odd texture. Like you had huge strands of nerve or bone or both. The wife and daughter bid into it and stopped right away. It was a shame because it was very tasty but the texture was not good. The soup dumplings (juicy dumplings) we're good. The pork shu mai portions were huge but they included shrimp and one of my pieces of shrimp actually had a tail in it. However, misunderstandings happen, and after it was resolved, the staff was apologetic and nice. Food: affordable and reasonable prices, but the food was not enough to convince me to go back. The coconut chicken had crisp skin, but the essence of coconut did not really go well with the chicken. Breast meat was dry, but not inedible. The beef floss noodle was decent. The noodles were crispy but the sauce I found to be lacking a little in flavor. We also ordered char siu corn steamed rolls and shrimp and cheese egg rolls.
