I came to dinner with a party of 10 and the quality of the food was average. The service was a one star. Our reservation was at 10:30pm, we arrived at 10pm to have drinks. We were set at 10:15pm and by 11pm the waiter said the kitchen is closed you arrive late. Please hire staff with a college degree or some common sense, don't issue a reservation at 10:30pm if you close at 11pm. Today I ate at Il Mulino on 86 W 3rd St, better quality food, better service, and all around amazing captain. This was my second visit to Harry Cipriani extremely disappointed. read more

Our meal began with Tuna Tartare & the Lobster salad, which were very refreshing. Loved the liver paste that accompanied the tartare. This was followed by the main protein course of Veal Piccata in a lemon reduction sauce I believe and a side of pasta carbonara (don't judge - theirs is amazing and done with an excellent prosciutto). It was exquisitely made, melting on the palette along with the veal, which the lemon really accented well, if not brought out the flavor even more. Having eaten in Venice, I must say I felt like I was back. The ambiance was unmistakably European and nice, filled with families and mature patrons. The staff and service were very attentive and knowledgeable on the menu, and gave us a few good laughs along with other pleasantries. They have amazing personalities and made us feel at home. Overall, the service is good, as well as the atmosphere (albeit noisy). However, this place is mostly a place for 5th Ave folks to see and be seen. The food is decent, but not exceptional given the prices. My wife had steak tartar. As someone who has had tartar all over Europe, she judged the presentation as definitely sub-standard. A patty of chopped meat on a plate, with no garnish of capers or onions, which is a more typical presentation. Not what we expected from a high-end NYC restaurant. Can make better (and way cheaper at home $18.95 are you kidding me?). Prices are outrageous, not high, we had to ask for our water glasses to be refilled more than once. 1/2 a roasted chicken for $38 please. It's not as if the quality warrants these prices either. I had cannelloni. It was good. My husband had a burger, it was good. We shared the beet, string bean and goat cheese salad, it was fine. The hike to the ladies room, through a door, across the lobby of the hotel, down a flight of stairs, past the health club. Holy crap I was exhausted by the time I got there. And the worst, on the way and the way back not one waiter stepped out of my way. They all pushed past doing their best to look busy. I had to get out of their way. Coming from Texas, we heard so much about Cipriani. Unfortunately, it left much to be desired. It's overcrowded and felt more like a diner than fine dining. We felt rushed and the menu was extremely limited. Food at best was mediocre. My daughter and I could not carry on a conversation because it was so loud, we had to text each other the entire time we were there. Note: This is for breakfast only I found myself dressed up in a suit at 10AM one morning this summer after a lecture at the University Club. Since I'm not a professional and don't work, it's rare to be all dolled up on a Thursday at 10AM and I couldn't bear to waste a grown-up outfit/makeup application/hairdo. I decided to take myself out for a beautiful breakfast and finally settled on this branch of the legendary restaurant about 7 blocks from my walkup. The only time I've been inside the Sherry Netherland was 2011 for a Christmas party at Doubles. It's so beautiful! They were serving breakfast only for 20 more minutes and I was one of four people left in the restaurant, so the service was exquisite. The servers in tuxedo jackets were older and so polite and solicitous. I realize Ciprani is known for its high prices and pretension but breakfast is the way to experience this elegant restaurant if you're on a budget (or not with someone to whom money is no object--at least not for food--which frankly describes a lot of people in Manhattan). I think my omelet, which was excellent with veggies and cheese, plus coffee in elaborate sterling silver set-up with cream and sugar/Equal bowl, and breakfast potatoes (I passed on the toast) came to 19 pre-tip. That's 5 bucks more than average for omelet, potatoes, toast and coffee anywhere good (and casual) in LA or SB. And to sit in that kind of beauty for an hour or two, I'm happy to pay 5 bucks more. The ceilings are unusually low but the lacquer wood and floor plan evoke an enchanted castle. It's like a munchkin or goblin or gnome room. I'm mad for beautiful, elegant spaces an regard the opportunity to dwell in beauty (Keats...) as an activity in itself for which I am happy to pay more. I would have fit in so well in the age Edith Wharton or Henry James--provided I had money, of course. Being a scullery maid would so not have worked for me. But being Mildred Theale in Wings of the Dove, minus the terminal illness thing, would have suited me quite well. Being Kate Croy would have been a challenge but I would have negotiated things differently, better, and more ethically than she did (or so I believe). read more

Do you want to know what it feels like to be discriminated? Do you want to be judged and looked at up and down the moment you walk into a restaurant? Do you want to gossiped about in an obvious manner throughout your whole dinner? Do you want certain staff giving you attitude? At Harry Cipriani, you can experience all of that (and maybe more!) if you're any race but white. The moment I walked into the restaurant with my friends, the entire restaurant turned around and stared at us because it was a group of 2 asian girls and 1 latina girl. When our other two friends joined us, one lady even widened her eyes for at least 7 seconds and pulled her face back, with almost a disgusted face...all because the other two were Persian and African American. When being seated, every table we walked by stared at us with judgmental eyes and whispers between the people in the tables. We even had a table where the mother and daughter were gossiping about us and kept staring at us, as if we are zoo animals. The food here is not bad but also not THAT good to justify the price. I had the banzino - it was light and refreshing but nothing that special. For dessert, I had a slice of Vanilla meringue cake that was fluffy and creamy but a tad too sweet for my liking. The tables are VERY close together and the ceiling is very low. It is slightly uncomfortable as a result. The table itself is very small too so be careful of spilling or knocking down plates! Also, the bathrooms are in the hotel attached to the restaurant. When one of the staff opened the door for my friend and I to get to the bathroom, before we could say thank you, he snarkingly said "you're welcome". The attitude certain staff here, in addition to the horrible customers there who have clearly not seen anyone of any other race but white, make this THE most uncomfortable restaurant (or place) I have ever been to. read more

This was our first time here with some regulars who love the place as well as the one in Venice. We had an early dinner since some of our party had to catch their flight so there was only one other party in the restaurant at the time. Service was slow, which is expected at this type of restaurant, but since there was a soccer game on tv, most of the staff was busy watching instead of serving. It wasn't too bad but they did forget a few things and had to be reminded. You'd think if you were one of the only two parties there, you'd get more attention. Pasta dishes start at $30, I had the Rigatoni Bolognese which had chunks of meat, something I haven't experienced before with a Bolognese sauce, but it was very good. I barely finished my dish so I guess it was worth the price. My wife had the Cannelloni which was the same price, but tiny, looked like an appetizer size, but a bit filling. Others in our group had the $28 burger which was thick and dry, the rib eye was ok, not much flavor. Desserts were good, we tried almost one of each they had to offer. Overall it was a nice experience, but you can get similar quality food for half the price at many other restaurants. But if you want the chance to dine with Pierce Brosnan, this is the place to go. Had dinner here after a 16 yr absence (was last here in 1998.) Was just as yummy as I remember (see my 'last meal' in my Yelp profile.) Was in town for New York Comic Con and had to come back here. Friends and I shared several apps and I had the spinach risotto for dinner. It was delicious. To be clear, I have tried risotto at many, many restaurants and none compare or even come close. It's a simple meal in ingredients but other restaurants seems to give it no attention and it comes out over-cooked or bland. Or they try and put too much stuff in it and it's just gross. We had many...many...Bellinis :) Also just as delicious as I remember. And like the risotto - I try these elsewhere and they are never, ever right. We were so full that we did not order dessert. But they brought some lemon cake on the house. Oh my gosh. It was like a bite from a cloud. So, so light. And creamy. And yummy. I wanted to go back the next night just for dessert! Service was fantastic - always there but never intrusive. It was packed but we never lacked for attention. I also like this location as it is not a scene. It's a nice restaurant. I've been to Downtown as well, and the food was great, but I prefer a nicer, calmer, adult dinner environment. I will always go back when I visit NYC. And always recommend. read more

I had been wanting to dine here for years, and finally did, but boy was I disappointed. First of all, the atmosphere is so dated and I felt like I was on a cruise ship in the 1980s. Our waitstaff and servers were lovely, however, a different person came to our table every single time, so it was a bit confusing. I think it's so strange that they prepare every dish table side. Some tables who ordered pasta received the entire portion, but for some reason they did not give us the entire plate that they mixed together next to the table. Obviously I knew that the menu would be pricy, but I did not expect for the portions to be so small, under seasoned, and underwhelming. We received completely uncooked rice, twice, and were told "that's how they make it." A member of our party was a professional chef and he couldn't believe a restaurant with that reputation would be ok with serving a plate of nothing but plain, unseasoned, raw rice for $38. Lobster: chewy. Steak tartar: just an uncooked burger. Drinks: better suited for brunch, not dinner. The only thing we actually enjoyed was the meringue cake, but do they even make that in-house? I have dined at some of the finest restaurants in the world, and I can't believe New Yorkers consider this to be an excellent restaurant. read more

The staff is rude, indifferent, and dismissive, and they could care less about their customers. Harry Cipriani, located at 59th & 5th has an address that's selling enough. It was an elegant Saturday evening when my guest treated me to a very memorable dinner. Like most of my Saturday nights, I was thrilled to be in the company this wonderful guest, enjoying fine wine, cocktails and Italian favorites. As we made our way to the table I quickly ordered the Sweet Maggie: Rum, Bellini base, fresh mint leaves. A bit strong, but a nice pinch of sweetness that lingered on the back of my tongue. For appetizers we shared the Baby artichoke salad and avocados with shaved parmesan and the Prosciutto crudo from Parma. As an avid lover of artichokes, the artichoke salad was perfectly marvelous, while each bite of the prosciutto left a melting sensation in my heart. When dinner arrived, not only did my stomach endure it's fare share of food, but the Half Free Range Chicken was presented so elegantly that I quickly sampled the most moist and delicately seasoned chicken. My guest fell pardon to the Green Tagliardi with veal ragu. Typically we enjoy our conversation over dinner, but in this case, we ate each bite with such appeal, slowly embracing the quality of our meals. Dessert was pleasant and a pristine way to conclude our meal. We ordered one of the Homemade Cake Selections...much to my disappointment I do not recall the label of the cake, but it was white, fluffy, and mouth-watering delicious. To accompany the sweets, we shared the 4000Maculan Veneto 2004 "torcolato" (vespaiolo, tocai, garganega), nothing is better than a remarkable and bold dessert wine. The decor of Harry Cipriani is known to be indentical to Harry's Bar in Venice; art deco, low and small tables, romantic and utterly sophisiticated. I came all the way from Houston, Texas to have dinner here and I was very disappointed. I came by myself and I was the only African American in the building. I didn't receive water and had to wait 20 minutes before asking for a manger so someone could help me order dinner from the menu. I wanted to leave the place after only ordering a drink and appetizer. There were three people at the front twisting around the restaurant and no one bothered to address me, until I spoke to the manager regarding how bad the service was. The food is very overpriced and mediocre. The manager tried to remedy the situation by bringing me a slice of cream cake. I told him I didn't want it and left it in the table. I must say I am extremely upset I wasted my time to eat there. I know there are so many other restaurants in NYC with excellent service and great food. read more

Poor Customer Service/Snob Management... I rarely share my experience on a restaurant, since restaurant business is a tough business and it's almost impossible to please everyone, but my experience at Cipriani was just fine until the last moment, when the manager came to our table at the end of the night with a nasty/very rude attitude. Long story short, I asked our host, if I can purchase two used & invaluable glasses of wine, since a young individual within our group wanted to take them home as a memory. He shared our request with the manager & he showed up at our table, took the two glasses and with a very rude manner said you wanna buy them, they're $25 each, which I responded back with okay!!! He left & never came back with the glasses. I'm not sure where this behavior came from, but when you spend this kind of money on Italian food at a restaurant that think they're the best, a simple answer like sorry we don't do this would be more appropriate. I don't know where the restaurant business is heading, but this kind of looking down/talking down to a costumer should not be acceptable by the restaurant owners and the industry. Unbelievable. Make sure to come here while in the city. The food was amazing. We started with a fantastic bread basket and hot rolls, which I love bread and I know my bread- this stuff was the best. We did lunch, ordered a great bottle of wine, the Gavi La Scolca, the Branzino for the boyfriend, the eggplant rigatoni for me. Both excellent. Oh and then the dessert. To die for. The vanilla cloud heaven cake thing and the lemon meringue with cappuccinos, and the little shortbread cookies...... This place is incredible for two reasons. One the food, and two the service. It is truly second to none. Our Server Aldo was outstanding, but I must say that every single person working in this restaurant went above and beyond. In a meantime, someone else came after us and sat down at the next table. He was promptly served. His companion who joined him soon after, was also promptly served. Never in my life have I been asked to leave my table before I was finished eating! The maitre'd Sergio rudely said I must get up now so he could accommodate his upper crust super rich 90 something year old guests! I've been fortunate because of the 45 years doing so to be able to dine in the finest restaurants in the world . I've been to almost all the Cipriani's that exist but never have had such an insult like that! I entered Cipriani's at 5:30pm . Place was mostly empty then. Was to meet a business associate for a drink but decided to sit down and said to the maitre'd that I'll also order something to eat. The maitre'd said to sit at the corner table. I decided to order dinner ahead of my business partner who had a much later reservation at another restaurant. So, as I waited for him my appetizer came and while eating the maitre'd Sergio asked me to move to another table so they could set the table I was at up for their 7:30 pm reservation. It was now at 6:15 when he asked me to move. Odd since it doesn't take more then an hour to set a table up, but I obliged anyway. At the next table my main course arrived and shortly my business associate arrived. At 3/4 of the way into the meal the maitre'd had the audacity to order me to leave "NOW" he said because his ultra rich dinner guests arrived and expected that table at 7:30. It was 7:20pm. He demanded we leave that moment because the two customers of his were probably regulars and loved that table and you could see them seething as they looked at us . So we were in shock . I should not have paid the bill! I've told so many people in the restaurant and record business this story and they were appalled to hear about how rude it was to be treated like that! This guy Sergio should be fired for such actions like that! They've lost a good customer and damaged their reputation. When you pay the outrageous amount of money to eat in a place like Cipriani's you would never in a lifetime expect something like that! It's not worth it ! Harry's will always my personal favorite, and an inimitable institution. I've always received excellent service, no less with waiters of excellent comportment. That said, on a Saturday night there can be a bit more tohu-bohu than usual and thus some leniency is granted. Their menu is toothsome, however it is not the ULTIMATE Italian cuisine - and in that same breath, anyone who frequents Cips is doing so for the sake of the entire Cipriani experience (a la 1930s Venezia) - not chiefly for their economically sized tagliatelle. In terms of caveats and Cips purported snobbery: There is indeed a standard and class to behold if you are planning to sit for a lunch or dinner, and if one falls short they'll be treated accordingly - let's not delude ourselves. Best delicious Italian food 5 star service like a General they are so quick here food comes out so fast it's like Magic I can't even believe it. Substitute for broccoli Rabe from rice no problem. I had the delicious Chilean sea Bass cooked in an unbelievable vegetable stew sauce on top. It's something my 80 year old mother cooks with that kind of flavor with love I know good food I grew up with the best cooks in my life. Everything I ate growing up Was made from scratch pizza , pastas, gnocchi everything..... the drinks are made so quickly perfectly outstanding cocktails. You get what you pay for and I'm happy to pay. Every bus boy wait staff is so quick and attentive here. NYC Italian? An old institution in the big apple but it either doesn't understand eggplant parm or doesn't care. This place is an expensive heart attack waiting to happen. They served me a smaller plate of greasy skins sliced off the outer edges of eggplants. I did not send it back, so as not to further embarrass my meal mates. At $50 bucks, this was a sad joke that left me slightly ill for 4 days. Not worth the time but that it was raining, we were staying at the Sherry and it was right there. I've been living in NY for 10yrs and have been wanting to come to this restaurant since I tried Harry's Bar in Venice about that long ago. My expectations were high, and I took my family from out of town, expecting a superb classic Italian experience. Unfortunately, it was everything but. The food was cold, service was terrible - not rude, as I have read in some reviews, just not attentive - no one filled our waters, asked if we wanted more wine or parmesan cheese with our pasta, checked in to see how our meal was, etc. While this may sound like small details, when you are at a "5 star" restaurant, with bills running at $150+ a person, you expect excellence on every aspect. This city is full of culinary excellence, and if you want to spend that much on food, save yourself the trip, and go somewhere else. This place, sadly, is no longer a must, it's a tourist trap. read more

Exceptional entertainment of a crowd. Maitre d (Sergio) was fabulous knowing everyone's name and quite impressive that he knew how to handle each client to their specific needs. Incredibly attentive and pleasant w witty jokes. The food was delicious but grand portions. It's a share of a restaurant. Too much food for one person and no matter how hungry you are share share share the plates are generously portioned. Fish is fab, chicken delicious but the potatoes are yummy! Overall excellent! First impressions when you walk in is a nice crowd of upper class people .....than the FUN starts ......the table's are for tiny people , they are about knee high ....its just weird ....the service is awful ...tremendous language barrier with wait staff , simple things like a empty wine glass gets taken away with no offer of "sir would you like another glass" .....waiter offered me water ,still or carbonated, i specify regular water is fine .....i think nothing of it ...i was charged 24.00 for 2 waters ......ridiculous ......ordered a goat cheese salad for 31 dollars ,same size as the serial bowl at your house ,enough for one ...fried calamari 30 dollars and you can get better at a fridays .....53 dollars for a 4 or 5 ounce piece of salmon thrown on a white plate with not even a garnish ......i ordered penne bolognese...waiter asked me if i wanted the full portion i said yes .......34 dollars for literally 25 pieces of penne in meat sauce WHAT'S A HALF PORTION , 12 pieces of penne and a kick in the balls by some pretentious waiter in a stained blazer , but i guess i should be excited they cooked the pasta al dente.....what a joke this place is .....they even tried to over charge me for water ......WATER . Some of my favorite dishes - Lamb Ragu / Spaghetti Bolognese - Veal Milanse - This oily fish dish which I can't remember the name - Oscobuco ( Saturday and Sunday only) and this is a special menu item - Lemon Vanilla Meringue What amazes me is how consistent Cipriani is, worldwide. You can order the same dishes at any of their branches worldwide and you will get the same thing. Doesn't matter if its Mexico City or Monte Carlo or New York for that matter. If you have a party of over 9 people, it's extremely complicated for the manager to do simple division, that she has to say "your guys are complicated". Fantastic lunch spot in midtown! Why all the mediocre reviews?! This is the perfect spot for a break from shopping. People watching is a sure thing and so is solid Italian food at high prices. I came in for lunch with a regular and followed his lead. We had the artichoke and avocado salad for lunch. I loved it. I will come here for this salad every time I come to New York. The grilled branzino was also wonderful, especially with the lemon caper butter sauce that we asked to be added to it. It came with a side of broccoli that was tender and simply steamed. For dessert, we shared the vanilla meringue cake. Now this is a cake! It was so light and fluffy with a torched merignue topping! Love at first bite. This is a must order.
