For years I've experienced unscrupulous HVAC contractors who have: 1. inspected my furnace by disassembling the burner then telling me it was too risky to put back together and tried to sell me a new unit. 2. reversing a wire and telling me the furnace was broken...a second opinion by another HVAC revealed that the wires were tampered with. 3. showing me a pic of a section of hot air ducting chewed thru by rodents, and that same contractor previously showed me a charred fiberglass pad and told me I was lucky the furnace didn't start a fire...I called on John to come out to check my system, and he told me those conditions did not exist. Just thought I'd write a follow-up, since John has gone above and beyond to follow-up with me. When John repaired our a/c last year, we understood that it was a quick fix that may not hold, but would save us a lot of money if it did. The repair did hold, and the a/c has worked fine. I just received a call from John advising that the a/c should be checked again now (instead of waiting until the first heat wave when everyone discovers their a/c is NOT working) to make sure it's still running properly. Honestly, I wouldn't have thought to check it before it gets hot. I own a business and deal with customers and vendors all day long. Were in telephone tag for three day. 2, When I spoke with John to ask about the pricing and how it worked, we got disconnected after the first question. 3. When I phone back immediately, John answered and angrily told me that he did not have time to answer every customer's questions. He told me not to bother him any more and hung up. You can draw you own conclusions, but this company representative was not only unprofessional but he was also rude. We have called John three times over 10 years. He has always been careful and reasonably priced. During the last heat wave (July 2017), our A/C broke down. He offered to guide me through the likely fix via phone, since he was booked up by dozens of calls. I declined. It took him several days to get to our house, as he advised us it would. He did the repair job in about an hour on a Sunday. We would wait for him again, because he is reliable and reasonably priced. read more

Pro: Scheduled weekend appointment was no (extra) charge. Con: Recommended costly (unnecessary) repairs, then claimed local laws required testing for CO2 leaks, which was false / incorrect information. The air conditioning unit quit working in one of my rental homes. The Property Management company dispatched a repairman who diagnosed the problem to be the Converter. I contacted John Hartvickson to get a second opinion & bid for the repair. To his credit, John returned my call promptly and scheduled an appointment for the upcoming weekend, stating there would be no additional charge for weekend service. John did not mention any 'diagnostic' or 'service fee' for the call, and therefore non was agreed to prior to the service call. John contacted me while onsite and informed me that not only was the Converter bad, but his recommendation was to replace the entire furnace (the Converter is a component in the furnace) at a cost of $1800. He further informed me that Local Laws REQUIRED him to preform a CO2 leak test when replacing the Converter, and that if any leaks were detected in the test, he would be required to condemn the entire central air conditioning and heating unit. I had him explain that one to me again, in detail, because I knew from my discussions with the other repair company that a CO2 test was neither required or necessary with the replacement of the Converter unit. When I informed John of this, he immediately became angry and aggressively rude, yelling into the phone that he had plenty of other calls scheduled and didn't have time for this 'bull ****'. He then informed me that if I didn't want him to repair the unit, I would owe him $150 for his 'diagnostic fee'. I was in a state of shock with his sudden rudeness and I reminded him that; 1) there was no agreement up-front for this charge and 2) I believed he was providing false, inaccurate and misleading information, and that I refused to pay him for such. John immediately hung up the phone on me. Approx. 30 minutes later, I received an irate call from his wife, who screamed obscene words at me for for a full 2-minutes because I refused to pay for his 'diagnostic fee'. In all, a completely unprofessional encounter which will not be repeated. Since I found Hartvickson Heating & Air Conditioning here on Yelp and made the decision to call him based on the reviews here, I feel I needed to leave my review for others. To conclude, a licensed repair company replaced the Converter for $250 parts & labor and no further repair was needed or recommended by this company. I used Hartvickson Heating & Air Conditioning last year, on the recommendation of an acquaintance, and am so glad I did! I called Hartvickson after another HVAC service company (recommended by a neighbor) came out and looked at my rooftop AC unit and told me the necessary repairs would cost $600. I balked at their diagnosis and price (I'll probably post a separate review about the company down the road; I've temporarily blotted their name from my memory; need to look up my old invoices), and went looking for other recommendations -- and thank god I did. Hartvickson came out at the scheduled time, clambered up on the roof of the two-story condo building (almost a three-story rise, not everyone's favorite thing to climb up on), came back down, told me what part seemed to be the problem, popped in a replacement part, and the HVAC has worked fine, in blazing-hot Walnut Creek summers or during the chilliest winter nights, ever since. And all for about ONE-THIRD of the price quoted by the other company. Too bad I didn't have this company's name from the gitgo, but even after I paid the initial service call by the weirdo company, Hartvickson still saved me a bundle in the long run. We called John when our furnace died in the middle of January. He came out the next day to give us an estimate, which was very competitive, and the day after that to install our new furnace. John was friendly and professional, and not only got our new furnace installed and working, but he made sure to cover anything unsightly and left us with a very neat clean looking furnace (in the garage, but still, it's nice that it looks nice).
