I enjoyed it and got the Asian glow halfway through. We started off with the truffle hamachi carpaccio. It was a smaller portion than I expected. Because we sat at the bar, we were given one roll at a time and didn't have to deal with any plastic. At first we were just going to do the 3 hand roll set, but we asked the waitress to change it to the 5 hand roll set afterwards. Just get in here already! This place elevates Sacramento and is going to be a favorite spot for many in Elk Grove! I knew I had to come in the moment I saw pictures of the interior, and the fact that so many of my friends have tried it and have nothing but good words to say. I've only enjoyed raw fish in Japan and Hawaii. But here, I can tell it's fresh. No fishy taste. Hands down one of the best dining experiences I've had in Sacramento! We came into Hello Temaki right before closing, and even though it was late, the staff welcomed us with so much warmth. They didn't rush us at all, which I really appreciated, and they took the time to put together the perfect spread for us. Every bite was incredible. I had my first hand roll experience recently while visiting LA and completely fell in love with it. Ever since, I've been hoping to find something similar back home -- and I'm so excited that Hello Temaki is here! Hand roll sushi places aren't common in NorCal. So I was very excited to try Hello Temaki! I think they opened less than a month ago so they're still somewhat in their soft opening stage. We ordered the Hokkaido uni toast and the set of three hand rolls which included salmon, spicy tuna, and negihama rolls. Please carefully read the description of the hand rolls on the menu. There may be some ingredients like micro cilantro or wasabi that some people don't enjoy. The uni toast was very very rich. It was smooth. Have you ever had fresh baked bread with salted butter? It's simple clean flavors but sooo satisfying. The uni toast felt like an elevated version of that. It's very popular. It's a bit pricy at $27/for two pieces but this is uni and wagyu. If you know you like these flavors then I'd recommend it. We were seated at the table so our hand rolls came out with plastic on the nori. There's instructions on how to remove it. Personally next time I rather sit at the bar and not deal with the plastic. It was a bit awkward and every time I ended up messing up the roll and having to push the rice/fish back in. It's also a lot of plastic waste. That's the only reason that it's less than the full 5 stars for me. It was a good dinner. Good food and the service was also very good. More of a date place spot. I wish Yelp allowed half stars because I'd rate this 3.5/5. My friends and I came here on Saturday, which was their grand opening. It felt very busy but we still got seated in about 30 minutes. Some of the tables were rowdy and I assume they were friends/family since they were super friendly with the staff and I overheard their tables being comped. I would have preferred if their opening day was for new customers, but I understand people coming out for support. It still negatively impacted our dining experience though. Overall service was average. Our server never checked up on us. When I tried to ask the person who brought out our food to add something to our order, he pointed to a sever helping the table next to us and said "she will help you." I know people have different roles so I don't mind that he redirected me to someone else. I just wished he would have let her know or called our actual server to our table because the server walked away when she finished helping her table before I could get her attention. In the end, I had to flag down another server to add more items to our order. But again, I understand if there were still some hiccups in the service because it was their grand opening and they were busy. I got the set menu for 5 hand rolls, the spicy scallop hand roll, gyoza, and yuzu sauce. The gyozas were basic but still good. The yuzu sauce was a nice addition, but I don't know if I would order it again for $3. Each hand roll was stuffed with fish and it tasted super fresh. You could tell they used quality ingredients. My favorite was the yuzu hegihama. What I didn't like was the plastic wrap around the seaweed. I understand that the purpose was to keep the seaweed from getting soggy but it was annoying when the rice fell out because it was stuck to the plastic wrap, which also caused some of the fish to fall out. We tried this place during soft opening, so we received the 15% off, which we basically got our set of 5 for free. 1. It was really hard to take the plastic off the hand roll because it would stick to the rice. The plastic was put on in 2 different ways...one way was way easier to remove than the other. 2. They charged us for order unagi sauce! 3. We order the set of 5 and they substituted one of the options for an Ocean Trout, which I ordered one separately, so ended up with 2 of those. Flavors are lacking in a lot of the hand rolls. My favorite one was the Salmon hand roll and the Avocado with Mushrooms. 4. I would say the price is a bit high. Cute little restaurant that reminds me of Kazunori in LA, but double the price and not as good. The wrapping on the seaweed makes the process more messy and harder to eat, plus it's a waste of plastic. Not sure if the purpose was to prevent the seaweed from getting soggy or attempt to keep your hands clean, but it didn't really do it's job. A few items were ordered and nothing really wowed me: - Fried Amaebi head ($5) oily and salty. Ask for slices of lemon, it cuts the salt and oiliness. - Garlic salmon carpaccio ($16) the salmon was dull and the sauce tasted overly peppery rather than having a strong tart garlic yuzu ponzu flavor. The jalapeno, chives and sprouts were all bunched up to the side. I thought I was tasked with wrapping a spring roll. - Kisu tempura ($7) the coating was thick, reminded me of a fish stick, except more coating than fish ratio. - handrolls - hard to eat and the presentation was meh. Everything wasnt executed that well and some were topped with a bunch of chives. 1. Softshell crab ($10) - batter too thick 2. Aburi salmon ($10) 3.BBQ albacore ($10) 4. This was a pretty disappointing experience unfortunately. In a nutshell, they are trying to copy Kazunori in LA, at double the cost, and without the deftness and expertise of proportions and preparations that make Kazunori a success. It was definitely not worth the money to eat here - this meal was a complete disaster. The beautiful photos of the perfectly crafted hand rolls you see on social media will not be what you get here - what you will get are hand rolls made by those who don't understand the balance between the crisp seaweed, the amount of perfectly cooked warm sushi rice, the pleasure of holding a freshly prepared crisp piece of seaweed with a dollop of freshly hot seasoned sushi rice with the right amount of fresh sashimi prepared with the right proportion of seasoning, etc. This was the case with all six hand rolls I ordered. They had all the right elements but the chefs didn't understand how to pair, prepare, or serve them to make the ingredients sing. Kind of like serving a hamburger with more cheese than meat, too much ketchup, soggy buns, etc. The sushi rice preparation tells you everything you need to know regarding the chef - if the sushi rice is prepared knowledgeably then everything else will be prepared well too. Unfortunately here the sushi rice was cold and stuck together to begin with; and did not have enough of the mildly sweet lightly salted mirin (rice vinegar). The plastic sleeves covering the seaweed were atrocious and definitely defeated the purpose of keeping the seaweed crisp because it caused the sauce to pool for some rolls causing the seaweed to be soggy and limp in the middle while also scattering the rice and filling everywhere - forcing me to eat the "hand rolls" with chopsticks because of how messy it was. The hamachi was grey and unappetizing, definitely marinated at least one night before; and they were made from the odds and ends and not the high quality pieces you'd get from other establishments, including the aforementioned Kazunori. All of the dabs of premade frozen wasabi sauces, chilis, etc. were way out of proportion. If they had used 1/10th the amount of the frozen wasabi sauce the taste would have been much better but instead they glopped on so much it was an explosion of saltiness that detracted from the flavor of the salmon for example. The amount used was the equivalent of drowning a hamburger in a cup of ketchup. The total cost of the meal with a 20% tip was $57 for six hand rolls. I don't mind paying that for expertly executed hand rolls with delicately balanced flavors and textures but these were ham-handed, throw-more-spice-and-seasonings-on in the hopes that it'll turn out well. I don't think they tasted their own creations but instead believed the hype they generated online. I added back one star for the very nice waitress who patiently donned gloves and demonstrated how to pull the plastic sleeves off ("if the rice comes off on the plastic then use a finger to push the rice back onto the seaweed") - this entire exchange should have given the owners pause - these are hand rolls and part of the pleasure of eating them is touching the food. The entire experience was just wrong, lol. The food was definitely a one-star, unfortunately. They are making a wide profit because they are charging more than what Kazunori does but serving inferior quality fish, covering up the lower quality by using excess amounts of spice. read more
