The Hereford House is a mixed bag of history and tradition, some of it brings back warm memories of my childhood in Kansas City, and some of it is a sad tale of arson and heartbreak at seeing images of the original quintessential KC Steakhouse reduced to a pile of ashes. Fortunately, just like Kansas City, the restaurant has survived (although the original location was never rebuilt after the fire in 2008) and continues to thrive today. Since we returned to KC after leaving the area for the past 15 years, we've been to the Shawnee location twice in the past 3 months. Both visits were very similar - good experiences, but not the type that will continue to grow the legend of this once undeniably great establishment. To begin, the steaks are good, cooked over charcoal, but I think the quality of the meat leaves a little to be desired. The meat can be a little tough in some places, but very tender with great charcoal flavor in other bites. My wife's 16 oz Ribeye (she wanted a big one so she could have leftovers for another meal) was ordered medium, but served on the low side of medium rare. The baked potato was perfect, soft and fluffy, with very generous portions of butter, cheese, and sour cream. She also ordered asparagus which was served crispy (I prefer my vegetables to be fully cooked and soft, but I realize most nicer restaurants don't serve them this way) but they also tasted very good. I ordered Country Fried Steak - they serve it cut in two pieces, both of them individually hand breaded with some of the lightest breading I've ever had on a Country Fried Steak. It was flaky with layers that seemed to soak up the delicious gravy. My mashed potatoes had a whipped texture and good flavor, served with green beans. The complimentary bread was white with a firm texture, larger and heavier than your typical diner dinner roll, but it didn't have a crunchy exterior like Italian bread. The bread was served with whipped butter that was room temperature soft. Another thing that annoys me about most nicer restaurants is their habit of serving cold butter. How am I supposed to spread cold butter on my bread? Thank you Hereford House for knowing I want soft butter. Our server was great, answering our questions about the menu and never letting our glasses become empty or a dirty dish to be left on our table. They operate with good teamwork too, as other employees stopped by our table a few times to pick up a dish or ask us how we were enjoying our dinner. 15-25 years ago, when someone said "Kansas City Steakhouse" there is little doubt that Hereford House was the first thing to pop into your mind. (Or, maybe The Golden Ox.) I don't know if Hereford House will ever regain their former glory, but it's still an enjoyable experience and worth a visit. read more

I went into the Hereford because I had been craving their food. LongHorn steak house is close to my house but I wanted Hereford House. I was totally unsatisfied, I ordered the rib eye, baked potato loaded and lobster tail. The I asked for medium my steak, it as rather rare and felt like mush in my mouth as I was chewing it. I had chucks of chewed up steak, I had to put in napkin, the potato was small and not even hot to the taste, the lobster tail was not was cooked and had a dash of what tasted like obay seasoning, My steak had to pieces, it was 2 round pieces of meat, held together by the outward piece of skin. My meal was $85 and totally not worth what I received, I tipped my server, $20 it was not her fault, I had a lousey meal, I will not be spending my hard earned money on substandard food. read more

My best friend came to visit from Atlanta and she wanted a Kansas City steak. A real Kansas City steak, not a Texas Roadhouse franchise-type steak. My go-to for steak has always been the Hereford House. Always. We drove from Lawrence to the Shawnee Hereford House location. Parking was easy and we were seated right away. Yes, we had a reservation but this restaurant was not crowded since it was late at night. I would always recommend a reservation when dining at Hereford House. We opted for the meal for 2 because it was a very good deal. We split an appetizer, got a salad, picked our own entree plus a side, and split a dessert. It was the perfect amount of food and the perfect price. It was more for the money by doing a For Two meal. We had the calamari appetizer which was delicious. The only drawback was the sauce was a jalapeño sauce which was not listed on the menu. My mouth went into hyper shock and I had to order glasses of milk to get the hot washed away. My sirloin was beyond delicious. It was cooked to perfection and was so tender you could cut it with your butter knife. The accompaniments of Caesar salad and baked potato was the perfect meal. Everything was fresh and delicious. It was one of those meals you remember for a long time. Out dessert was some ridiculous molten chocolate concoction that was indescribably good. Perfect way to end the evening. Our server was delightful. She was helpful and kind. She did not even charge me for the glasses of milk. She was attentive without being cloying. Got the filet mignon and there wasn't a lot of flavor to the meat and was way overcooked than what i had asked for. We went back thinking the Thanksgiving Day Special would be like it was the last time. This time it was not. Yes you get a lot of food for the money. However, when I asked for double turkey meat instead of turkey meat and primed rib it came with giant pieces of turkey not slices and the tough skin was still on them(I couldn't even cut it easily with my fork). It was if they didn't bother to properly slice the meat at all. On top of that they put the cranberry sauce right on top of the turkey! Why would you do that?! The green bean casserole I got was like a pile of mush just like my mashed potatoes. They crammed all of this on the plate as if they had no direction on presentation no regards for quality. The carrot cake I got for dessert was alright. It was a lot of food, probably too much food, problem is the quality wasn't that great on all of it. So my wife and I chose Hereford House for their happy hour specials before the Chiefs game tonight. When seated in the bar (Shawnee location) the menus had changed and only the small bites were included on the happy hour menu. When we questioned the server she said it had been changed two months ago. I told here we were in less than that and purchased items ( burger) off the happy hour menu. She said I just work here I'll get the manager. Same story from the manager, the menus changed two months ago. We left. My wife then got on the website and guess what the burger , fried chicken, small steak, the usuals, were all advertised on the happy hour menu. So I ask you Hereford House what is up? Your bar area used to be packed during Happy Hour, tonight it was almost empty. Get it together. If you change the menu then change the offerings on the website. To sum the experience up it was simply amazing the service was perfect, the food was delicious, and the restaurant's ambience and atmosphere was great for our date night. Started with calamari and house salad which were both fresh and full of flavor. I had the filet medallions and they were cooked perfectly medium rare. They were "melt in your mouth" good! It was almost like they ran from the grill to our table! I ordered a side of the sautéed portobellos that enhanced the flavor even more. Good wine selection. A recent visit to the Hereford House left me completely satisfied with the service, atmosphere & food. We were greeted so kindly at the door by a youngster...a 15-year-old gentleman that had his act together. We were extremely impressed. He was pleasingly pleasant, dapper & had the persona of a much older/seasoned young man. He showed us to our table where another kind gent took over. We ordered an appetizer (pork belly) which didn't take long to come out, however the main course took FOREVER, but we didn't complain. We realize the times that we are in and when you choose to dine out, you must be cognizant of it & know that most places are doing good to even remain open. 'Short-staffed' is the 'new normal' in many establishments. Once we received our meals they were sooooo worth the wait. Omgudness, deliciousness at its finest. Let me start by saying we have come to this location at least 4 times in the past and have been extremely happy, and the food has always been amazing. We had no expectation that today would be any different, and when two people spend $90-$120 on a meal you do expect a certain level of quality but today we were extremely disappointed. First the chips served with the spinach and artichoke dip were very stale and overly salty. Secondly the Beef short rib campanelle was dreadful, the meat was so overcooked it was more like a pot roast texture, the pasta seemed like it was cooked days ago and reheated, very soggy and limp. The entire dish was inedible, the meatloaf was just as bad seemingly days old and reheated. Thirdly the pimento Mac and cheese had absolutely no flavor and was gritty. Besides all that the waiter continued to promise fresh bread and during our hour at the table never received it, even after asking again. I did leave the butter he brought for the bread on top of the receipt hoping he would realize why he received such a poor tip. No wait, good service, and the menu made it easy to pick out what I wanted. So, why only 3 stars? The food was good, pretty much on par with what you get at steakhouse chains. Appetizer of bacon wrapped shrimp was decent. Bread was fresh and butter was light. The brightest spot was the Caesar salad, which was really good. Filet mignon was cooked perfectly, as were the sauteed mushrooms. And the cheesecake with chocolate syrup was good as well. But nothing from the meal really popped or stood out. And to be honest, the price of the meal (even after the gift card) was more than I'd have spent at my preferred steakhouse, for what I would describe as not being quite as good. Went with our Family for Easter Dinner 2023 . Several of us selected the prime rib option over the glazed ham. And all of us ended up very disappointed. The Prime Rib was very very fatty, yes I know Prime Rib is a fatty cut of meat, but this was not at all trimmed and was excessively fatty. It was practically raw as well, not even close to medium rare, it was cold and barely cooked. The sides, the green beans tasteless, mash potatoes were barely average nothing special. We had to keep asking for things , asked multiple times for dinner rolls which we finally received after our dinner plates, but thank God we kept asking for them , they were the best part of the meal. Had to ask for creamy horseradish after receiving our prime rib and while waiting our food got even colder. But I have to say the desert was incredible! The best carrot cake. Started with pork belly app, which was overcooked and fatty. Cornbread was dry and too sweet. I had a kir royal, was way too sweet, too much Chambord. Hubby said his smoked old fashioned was ok. Hubby had meatloaf for entrée, had requested Brussel sprouts but it came with corn. I had the 7 oz filet, nothing special. I had the bacon + blue steak topping for an upcharge, not good. The bacon jam is sweet, and you don't want sweet on your steak. Service was superb though. Not sure got the 20% off bill Mondays special, don't have receipt anymore. Going to Hereford House used to be a big deal, not anymore. That was 20 years ago. Whole experience felt more like Applebee's and Chili's. Way better places for steak. read more

So I ordered my usual of the prime rib, and I will have to say, by far the best prime I have eaten in my life. I also ordered cheese Ranch potatoes and wow another home run. I've been to this location at least 20 times, and unfortunately, the food and service has been declining in the past few years. When it was first built, it would easily have been a 4 or a 5 star, and it's only getting a 3 from me today in reverence to previous meals and on a good day, it's really good. If I were just basing on today, I would give it 2 stars, between weird and bad service moments. Firstly, when we were being seated the host tried to seat us at a table that was essentially in a doorway. That wouldn't have been a big deal, except the room was mostly empty, with several booths empty. No one wants to sit in a doorway, and if they don't have to or request it, put them someplace more comfortable. He also had asked if we were there for brunch or lunch and I said "We don't know; just give us both menus." And once we were seated, he gave the 3 of us a total of 2 lunch menus and a single brunch menu. Again, if it were super busy, I'd understand a menu shortage, but it felt weird and stingy. Once we were seated, we had to wait about 10 mins for our server to come over. During this time, no one provided us with water or anything while we waited. We went ahead and ordered both our drinks and food to expedite the process. It didn't bode well for the pace of our meal. My mom ordered biscuits and gravy with 1 poached egg. My dad jokingly said "Make sure it's runny because I don't want to hear her complaining about it later!" I also ordered biscuits and gravy with 1 sunny side up egg. And my dad got, I think, the chicken BLT with a loaded baked potato. We waited at least 20 mins for our food, the waitress apologized for the delay and blamed 2 large groups ahead of us monopolizing the kitchen. Once our food came out, I had 2 sunny side up eggs and my mom had gotten 2 poached eggs, even though we both only asked for one, and the waitress, who was trying to be attentive, said she was concerned that the poached eggs were overcooked, so she was going to get fresh ones for my mom so off she went and we dug into our food. As much as I enjoy the Hereford House gravy, there's a real issue with the biscuits and gravy, which is that the proportions are WAY off. The 2 biscuits that come with the order are tennis ball sized and there's maybe a 1/4 cup of gravy. Plus the biscuits aren't served straight out of the oven. They may be made on-site, but they are obviously reheated and are incredibly dry by the time they get to your table. That wouldn't be a problem if you got more gravy, but you don't. So we wait probably 15 minutes or so on my mom's eggs, while her food is getting cold, and by the time they actually came out, my mom wasn't interested in eating her food anymore. The waitress offered to get her a new plate, but then she'd have cold eggs with hot B&G, which isn't an improvement. The waitress apologized profusely and said she was going to grab the manager because the kitchen remade the eggs 6 times before they were right. We really didn't want a fuss, just didn't want to pay for my mom's eggs, but the waitress insisted. So we waited probably 5 mins for the manager to come over, which seemed like a long time with a half full restaurant. Once she arrived, she demanded my mom tell her what was wrong with the meal, and said that anytime something is wrong from the kitchen they will happily remake it, and that essentially, the waitress shouldn't have brought the eggs out separately. It felt a bit confrontational and condescending when we were complaining about what was ultimately a $2 cost. She didn't seem to grasp the issue was that we already had slow service and we didn't want to wait for another plate of food to come out, 20 mins after my dad and I had finished eating. Once she left with our payment, we had to wait another 5-10 mins for the final check to come out. All in all, we were there about an hour and 15 mins or so for a meal that at IHOP, Eggtc, or First Watch would have taken 30 mins from seated to payment. Really a bummer of a meal. read more
