One star for the food, the extra star is for the waitress who was clearly struggling. Don't go on a prime rib special night. They will completely forget about your $40 ribeye at the expense of a couple $12 prime rib specials. That's the excuse we got. They were too overloaded with prime rib specials to get our order out, as we watched tables empty around us. The steaks were also completely wrong once we finally received them. Two of three went back as they were completely rare when asked for medium well. The manager said that was "their medium". Maybe you guys should use the same scale every other steak restaurant uses in that there isn't blood leaking out of a medium well steak... My husband and I have been to both locations and both meals were consistent. We do the 2 for $75 and it is so much food and variety. The filet mignon is prepared just to my liking. The stuffed mushrooms are excellent, as well as their flambé style bread pudding! My favorite dessert there! It was better than the double chocolate fudge brownie IMO. Really disappointed. For the price, keep driving. We ordered 2 dinner for 2 packages with apps, entrees and dessert. $150 for 4 before tax and tip. The apps seemed to be pre prepared and not fresh, the Caesar salad is served as a whole leaf half head of romaine. The steaks were cooked perfectly or I would have rated even lower. Had a very subpar experience on Friday, March 24. I was reluctant to go because of a prior experience many years back, but my fiance and I decided we would take her nice out for a nice dinner before a movie. We arrived just before 9 and we were greeted by a hostess and the manager and seated in a nice corner booth. Well that's where our interaction ended. We were seated in the dining room where the server had the room to himself. There were two other tables active and I believe one was having issues with their final tab, while the others waiting for their food. We waited 10 minutes for someone to acknowledge us. Nothing. We were passed by many times and the server in that section unenthusiastically served the other table their food while making zero effort to get anything started for us. We walked out and had a fun dinner at Jose Peppers. This was pretty sad. You would hope that for the prices they charge, which they hinge on tradition, they would take very good care of their guests. I'd go to Longhorn 10 times out of 10 for equal quality and better service. This was a sad showing. If you are going to be a top-tier steakhouse then invest in people that will deliver an experience at that level. read more

The stuffed mushrooms were excellent. The artichoke dip was pretty good. Like most American restaurants the red wine is served lukewarm instead of cellar temperature. Since the Merlot was vinegary I assume that it was stored at too high a temperature. Came to Hereford House for the first time New Years Eve. Service was great and was what earned them the 3 stars I gave. We got the Calamari for an appetizer and it was good. My husband and I both had the 1957 salad and it was bagged salad. Are you kidding me? You guys are serving disgusting bagged salad to someone spending more than $60 per meal, come on! I got the bacon wrapped steak medallions and they were good and tender. My husband got a KC Strip which he said was nothing special and his ranch mashed potatoes were cold. Took a piece of carrot cake home which was delicious, literally the best thing I ate from this restaurant . Good food that tastes as it should. The prime rib was juicy and lightly seasoned so you could taste the beef. I started with grilled oysters. They were excellent and prepared as I requested-no panko. They were however very small and not filling. My side of spinach was well cooked but used too much margarine. For a steakhouse I want butter not the cake stuff. Came for dinner, restaurant was recommended by a local. I'm near Kansas City so I wanted to try a steakhouse. I received a nice welcome and was seated right away. Great so far. My server was busy and took a little time to get to my table but someone came by to bring me water, all good. The server was pleasant but seemed rushed. I came for a KC Strip steak but unfortunately was disappointed. The steak was ordered medium rare and was cooked correctly, nice job. I also ordered mushrooms, asparagus and béarnaise sauce. If you like Texas Roadhouse and Longhorn then this is a place for you. It was my daughter's birthday and she wanted steak and this place was right beside out hotel and my husband said he tried it 5 years ago when he was here for work and liked it so I gave it a shot even with the negative reviews. Starting off was great we were seated immediately and had the pork belly appetizer, it was really good. I ordered the prime rib and my husband had the ribeye. I wouldn't recommend either one. This was not on prime rib special might which I think is where you get it for a super discounted price, it tasted like a prime rib special, why on earth they would pour the au jus all over the meat before serving it is beyond me, I would've asked for it on the side if I would've known it was going to be swimming in it, I feel it's a way to cover up the flavor that they couldn't provide and it was pretty tough. My husband's ribeye was alright yet again it would be a Longhorn steakhouse steak. The "mashed potatoes" were off, they were extremely white which was weird and tasted awful, I think they were bagged because even the boxed potatoes don't taste that bad, it's sad when my 8 year old birthday girl who ordered them is the one that said they were gross and she eats mashed potatoes at school so that's embarrassing. The kids did get to finish off with ice cream and a birthday brownie so that's why I added another star. read more

So I'm torn when writing this. I heard great things from a colleague of mine about this place and so being on a business trip and staying at the Courtyard I thought I would try it. First let me say I sat in the bar and the bartender was nice really nice. I ordered the 14oz Ribeye with Asparagus and a side wedge salad. The salad was great. The steak and asparagus, not so much. When I paid $43 for a Ribeye and it wasn't anything to write home about, it made me think....just buy a $15 Ribeye at the grocery store put some olive oil on it with kosher salt and pepper and slap it on the grill. A whole lot of what not to do at a steakhouse in our visit to this location. It was my wife and my anniversary. She found a Groupon for Hereford House so we thought we'd go. The place seemed nice, but there was problems early. We were hoping for a quiet evening. We ended up getting people with rowdy kids and others with their cell phones on speaker. Can't fault the Hereford House for that, but what was yet to come, we can. Before I get into detail, I want to say our server was pretty good and probably the only reason I didn't give this place 1 star. We ordered their dinner for two, which is an app, soup or salad, an entree from a limited list, and a dessert. We were celebrating so we thought a 4 course meal would be nice. For the app, we got their steak and mozzarella croustini, which is basically a carpacchio, but with the meat cooked a bit and not raw, a croustini with some pesto and a slice of mozzarella on top. Practically flavorless. The presentation was on a large bed of lettuce that pretty much covered up the meat, so you had to dig. The only flavor I got was from the garlic in the pesto on the croustini. It basically tasted cold and crunchy with a hint of garlic. Since we initially ordered just waters, at this point we ordered sodas because we needed some flavor. Second course, soup and salad. I got the steak soup, as they call it. My wife got a caesar salad. For the soup, think of the meatiest beef stew you've ever had and remove most of the veggies and all the broth, that's what this was. It was pretty much all beef flavor and the consistency of sludge. Way too heavy. I mean, I still had an entree and dessert, I didn't need to eat all this. My wife said the salad was swimming in dressing, to the point of being gross. Caesar salads usually have parmesan cheese grated on it. This had big sheets of thinly sliced parmesan that was difficult to eat. 0 for 2 so far. Third course, the entree. A steakhouse can't screw up steak and potatoes right? My wife ordered the filet with a loaded baked potato. I ordered the strip with their parmesan fries. The cook on the steaks was fine as they hit the proper temp, but there was no seasoning. No salt. No pepper. Nothing. My wife's steak also looked like it sat on a hot spot too long and the sear became a char. It was black. I did taste hers. It at least had more flavor than mine, but you can attribute that to the cut of meat, but she said there was plenty of burnt flavor from the char. Her baked potato was under done and not loaded, no butter, no sour cream. My fries were regular fries, not parmesan in any way, shape, or form. They tasted okay with the ketchup, but, like the rest of the meal, they weren't even salted. We wanted to leave, but we still had the dessert, which was their chocolate cake, drizzled with chocolate sauce and caramel. I could tell that caramel didn't taste right. My wife said they must have used some alcohol or something in the caramel. We didn't finish it. Basically, a waste of money. Way too expensive for a terrible meal. Our server was a nice guy, but the kitchen needs a stern talking to. I've gotten better steaks from non-steakhouses. Avoid. read more

I was very disappointed with my latest visit to the Shawnee Hereford House this past Wednesday evening. Service was incredibly slow. Our appetizers took about 20 minutes to come out. About 5 minutes later the waiter brought our bread, but said he needed to go get the butter. The butter finally came out about 25 minutes later. Our entrees took another 20 minutes. My prime rib was cold, so I sent it back. About 10 minutes later a manager brought me a new one, but it was also cold. On the third try I finally had a warm meal. I'm not a fan of Hereford House. Last night my hubby and I had a gift card so we sat in the bar for a quick dinner because they do happy hour all day in the bar on Sunday. Our quick dinner took almost 1.5 hours! I know they are busy in the bar but really, you run the special, you know it brings people in, STAFF UP FOR IT!! That poor one bartender was serving the whole (very full) bar area! She did as good as she could but management needs to staff appropriately. So it's a steak restaurant and I ordered a french dip, which is supposed to be shaved prime rib, and my husband orders a steak sandwich, which is supposed to be a sirloin. Both sandwiches came out looking identical. Shaved, very well done, very dry beef. Seriously, they should take a lesson from J. Alexander. We went to Hereford House to celebrate my brother's wedding, and I can say: I was pleased. We got one of the private rooms with a table for twelve. The service was excellent as was the food. Everything was done nicely and the timing of the courses was spot on. We ordered off the "Two dine for $50" menu which you must ask for. It includes a shared appetizer, a choice of soup or salad for each person, two entrees, and a shared dessert. It was a mighty fine deal. The available entrees are a selection from the regular menu. The best part was that none of the courses were shrunken versions of the regular menu versions - they were full size. It was a heckofa deal. We were offered rolls while we waited for our appetizer. We chose the spinach artichoke dip with garlic baguette toast. It was decent but not the best I've had. I got the spring salad with shallot vinaigrette and really enjoyed it. My wife got the Caesar salad which was also good. For entrees we both got the 10oz KC Strip which were both cooked to a perfect med-rare. I added the cracked black pepper and blue cheese. The taste was good and the blue cheese did not overpower. For dessert we got creme brulee which was OK but definitely not great. Overall, Hereford House really delivered on the night we ate there. I have been to this location many times over the past 6 months, I've always spoke highly of everything here, from the food to the service. On multiple occasional we stayed for a long time and racked up some pretty extravagant bills, hoever I never regretted visiting. This last visit I decided to take my mother for dinner and was looking forward to it since she has never been. When we arrived on time to my reservation we were seated all the way in the back. It is not as nice as the other sections and the service there gave to feel of being "low priority". The food was acceptable but definitely not the best I've had here. It wasn't a horrible experience, but considering that I often visit this location is could tell it wasn't up to the usual standards. It's also unfortunate because I was bringing someone very important to me. I don't see myself coming back without talking to a manager at the least. I also a Passport Dining member so that's saying a lot considering the perks I get and given I live so close to this restaurant. read more

I distinctly remember thinking that frozen Tyson Anytizers tasted better than their boneless chicken wings. When I got a "$10 off $20 or more" coupon, I decided to give them another shot. We got some onion rings that were just ok. We also got a Country Fried Chicken meal. If a restaurant is going to serve mash potatoes, they better be great, and they weren't. The breading on the chicken had no flavor, and my man said the gravy in the TV dinners he ate as a kid were way better than the gravy on the chicken. Very disappointing...although I'm getting used to that in the KC area; people's expectations for restaurants seems lower. I doubt I'll be back. read more

You were clearly understaffed tonight, and the card reader was down for much of the evening. In spite of these challenges with a crowded house, you guys did a great job. Our server was extremely polite and wore a smile the entire time. The manager rolled up his sleeves and was helping out all over the restaurant. Challenging circumstances, but handled nicely by a staff with a positive attitude. I appreciated you guys very much. Now, on to the food. I got a 9 oz filet, and my wife got a sirloin. My fiancé and I just left the Hereford house and let me tell you, we are impressed! Our server, Cory, was awesome. He was calm and cool; his personality fit the atmosphere perfectly. Cory also had immaculate timing when it came to checking on us. I didn't feel overwhelmed and I didn't feel neglected. We decided to do the dinner for two special. We started with the fried artichoke and aioli sauce which was a great start to an amazing dinner. Then we had the caesar salad which could've been bigger (I love me my salad) and the dressing was a little different than usual but still great. For my entree I chose the 12oz KC strip cooked medium. The cook was perfect and steak was incredibly delicious. My fiancé chose the bacon wrapped medallions which he enjoyed thoroughly.
