I feel bad writing this review since I want to support local businesses. However, today, I went to Heska's for the first time in the 20 years I have lived in this area. The lady who took my order was amiable, but she appeared to be flustered. I ordered a waffle to go with a coffee drink. While I was waiting, I watched what was happening in the kitchen. The cook was grilling some meat, and I saw him flip the meat with his hands and not kitchen tools. Afterward, he took my waffle from the iron and put it into my to-go container again with his bare hands. I did not see him wash his hands. When I got home, I tried the waffle, which was raw in the middle. At least my coffee drink was good. I do not think I will be going back, and it is a real shame. read more

Met up with friends and it was my first time here. I got the caramel apple cider which was really good and the chicken salad sandwich. The bread is made in house and you taste that it's fresh. the place is small but has some space on the outside to sit. We got a Root beer & some OJ which were apparently $3-4 each, the biscuit and gravy was $6 but you pay extra for any meat which was fine, and then we got a crumb cake. the food was alright but i guess it works out bc of the price the place is cute on the outside but the inside isn't as much - but I guess that's what I should expect at a small town. There are cute seating spaces but they had Fox News playing in the front area so that immediately left us with a bad taste and searching for a space away from it. Found a nook in back but it looked as though it hasn't been thoroughly cleaned in quite some time. We ordered coffee and a pastry but it was all so sub par and unremarkable that I cannot remember the specifics of what we ordered, just that we didn't finish any of it. The folks working there would leave or be in the back somewhere we couldn't see or hear them so our attempts to get assistance went unanswered. We wanted to avoid the crappy customer service at our hotel's restaurant & avoid the long wait times at nearby restaurants. I happens to zoom in on Google Maps of Places to Eat on the 38 as we'd enter Mentone & came across this gem! We noticed Heska's would be open early on Sunday morning & it worked for us! Located right next to Arco- it's the bright burnt orange building (signage located at sidewalk). Private parking lot available. As for the customer (a few reviews before mine) that stated there are no signs of masks required- there is one handwritten & taped to the front of the door. No dine in- but, outdoor seating is available on the front porch & outback. We were greeted by Heska & she was full of conversation! I decided to enjoy a honey cinnamon latte. And nosh on an order of biscuits & gravy with bacon crumbles & a side of well seasoned home fries. The food & latte order hit the spot & was a perfect serving. I didn't want to be overstuffed knowing we still had 2 more hours of getting home. One thing Heska is amazed by is all of the support from her community. Her breads are made fresh! I am so incredibly happy with this place and happy that it's close to my house. It is a converted home and so it has a large open area and then a couple of small rooms. The large area has a working fireplace and musical instruments. The ambience is so warm and inviting that I am mediately felt at home. The food is definitely the star here. They make all of their own baked goods including the rolls and bread's that the sandwiches are made on! They have a lunch special for $8.50 that is half a sandwich plus soup or salad plus a drink. Fantastic deal! If you want a whole sandwich it's $10.50. During the winter I've gone there several times and have gotten the soup every single time and it's been sublime. I think my favorite was the chicken and dumpling soup but the potato cheese was a close second. My favorite sandwich is the Philly cheesesteak but every sandwich I've gotten has been great. I keep bringing more people here because it's just so good. Last but not least, are the owners. It's Heska's and her husband Joe. Joe makes all the baked goods and Haska makes all the savory food.
