Again, here goes another honest review and it's sad that it's yet another low rating: Sugar Shack in Mentone: Hard to find location Bad customer service Confusing food options in menu Pricy for the portion and quality of food Long wait time Poor food quality Good lattes If you've never been here, be aware that you have to ask the lady ringing you up about additional food options that are not listed on menu, such as breakfast meats and eggs. Because it's not listed, it comes off as though all this place has is what we see on the one printed menu on counter top/ or chalk board. Very confusing in my opinion. Hope this tip helps keep anyone else from being confused, and avoids an attitude from the worker to you for your confusion. The only thing satisfying was the vanilla latte. My first visit to this place was yesterday and maybe they just weren't on their A game then, but, the service was slow. There were only 2 ladies in the dining area so I am not sure what took so long. The 2 ladies told me that each time they go here, the service is really fast. Either way, I enjoyed my visit.This place is located off of a busy street and it appears to be a house (easy to miss). Once inside, the decor is kind of cute. Its definitely different. The main dining area is the 1st room you walk into near the fireplace. They had classic horror films playing on their big screen. I got the Mongolian chicken sandwich and the cream of broccoli and cheese soup. The Mongolian chicken sandwich was mildly spicy. It had grilled onions and melted cheese inside. It was really good. I was actually surprised because I didn't expect much of this place. The soup was pretty good too. Very creamy, but there was no hint of cheese apparent within it. Yep, this is a cute little spot, with personality to boot. I loved the homey atmosphere and friendly vibes. They took a cozy 1930's California Mediterranean bungalow complete with fireplace, and converted it into a smart coffee house feeling, with lots of little gathering places, and tables of magazines etc so you can just kick back and enjoy your drinks and food. Charming. Food was decent. If I had any wishes, it would be that they look into buying a more flavorful bacon. While the portion of bacon was good, my BLT tasted flat, not salty or glazed or smoked, and I had to ask for more tomato as it was sliced way too thin. read more

Greek salad with super fresh greens, cherry tomatoes, raisins, olives, feta cheese nuggets, and the best vinegar based dressing I've ever had. Blackberry crumble/coffee cake that was a perfect blend of blackberry, crumble, and an almost cheesecake-like base, to die for! Came in here while in the Redlands/Riverside area on business and a friend works here. It's a quaint little deli shop with many little nooks and rooms to hide out in and work on anything requiring internet because of the free wifi. The sandwich was tasty and a good size and the coffee was alright. I have to have soy milk and so I'm not usually the best person to judge the coffee taste with due to that major difference. However, my yin yang mocha was pretty good. It's a bit difficult to find because the signage isn't the best, however just look for the brightly colored building and you're good. The soup wasn't the amazing, but not terrible either. It was just the right thing for a rainy day. I do recommend coming to try this place if you're in the area, but it's nothing super duper to write home to. read more

This place has AMAZING food! A friend and I had lunch here after a long, hot hike on San Gorgonio Peak. It was 102 degrees in Mentone but wonderfully cool in the restaurant. We stopped in for sandwiches (Rueben and Mongolian beef) and a smoothie. The sandwiches had excellent flavors - you could taste the homemade sauces and condiments, fresh beef, and fresh bread - none overpowering the other. The smoothie was made from real fruit. And the prices are so reasonable! Heska (the chef), her husband, and grandson all served us and came by to briefly chat and to make sure we were enjoying our meal. Heska was telling us that she plans to retire sometime but doesn't know when. Our response, "Noooooooo!!!". I sure hope for all her customers' sakes that she doesn't retire soon! read more

I had such a magical experience here last weekend! I'm a U of R alum and had never stepped foot in here before. I'm bummed about that, but better than late never, I suppose. I was in town to perform in the Feast of Lights and decided to check this place out after the Saturday morning performance. I remember other students and girls in my sorority always hyping this place up. Now I see why. Heska and her husband not only make amazing food with the utmost love and care, they are also simply wonderful people. The place has its own cute, charming vibe to it as well. My boyfriend, friend and I had the entire place to ourselves when we came here for brunch. It was really slow because of the rain, I think. We got a chance to talk to them and get to know them, and I must say that I love Heska's sense of humor. She's a truly funny, witty woman. Smart, driven, and has a huge heart. Her husband is so sweet and supportive, and I can tell that they both pour equal amounts of blood, sweat and tears into their business. A little while after we finished our food, Heska and her husband came out of the kitchen to check up on everyone, then picked up their instruments that were sitting in the corner and put on a little show for us! It was such a lovely little surprise, and a special moment that I'll cherish forever. My boyfriend was particularly stoked, as this was his first time visiting Redlands. What a cool, unique experience for the both of us! This is the quintessential "mom & pop" breakfast spot. Everything is made fresh to order. Even their baked goods are made from scratch. Heska told me that all the produce they use comes from their garden outside. Please go here if you haven't already, especially if you're a U of R student! I regret not coming here and getting to know Heska while I was going to school, but I'm so fortunate to have met her now, and I will make it a point to come visit her every time I come into town. First time trying this place and I am BLOWN AWAY. We got an Avocado Sandwich with Potato Soup, fresh juice, and espresso. Everything was sooooo good. The sandwich was a perfect blend of vegetables, condiments, and soft bread. Potato soup was smooth and on point. Juice was great she gave me a blend of orange, carrot, apple, celery, and ginger. Espresso was balanced and smooth, and served in the cutest little cups! I came on a Friday night which happens to be music night. This spot is perfect! I stopped here on our way up to Big Bear. The ambiance is nothing less than adorable. It's so welcoming. I felt like I was eating at my aunt's cottage in the country. We ate outside next to a running fountain. Inside, they have a few different small rooms to choose from to eat in. In the main room you walk through, there is a band set up for live music on Fridays. Dope. I ordered a vege sandwich. Homemade baked bread?! Amazing, who's doing that nowadays? And I'd like to mention when I order a vege sandwich at other spots, all I get is tomatoes, lettuce and onion. At this spot I got alfalfa sprouts, bellpepper, tomatoes, olives, onion, avocado, lettuce, swiss, side dill pickle sear ..plus some kettle onion sour cream chips and a Snapple Apple. The portion was perfect. I ordered a half and it filled me up. My friend got the turkey sandwich with provolone, he also agreed on the food. It hit the spot.
