For the last couple of weeks, I've been hooked on their fried rice. Prior to that, it was their pork belly basil. Today I decided it change things up. Lunch was Thai Basil with eggplant and pork belly. Very savory sauce with a lot of heat (cause I like it hot). The basil gives it a nice jolt of freshness that cuts through the savory sauce and fatty pork belly. Carrots and broccoli are sauteed til al dente. The eggplant is nice and soft and soaks up the flavor in the sauce. I think I might have a new fave! read more

Fast. Great food. Good prices. Monster portions. Nice shaded area to eat. The truck looks like it's from an old future wasteland Road Warrior movie, but don't let that stop you. The guy taking the orders is extremely nice and clearly values customer service. While I am waiting for my food, I always hear him being very helpful to customers inquiring about dishes. So far, everything I've ordered has been a hit. I am slowly working my way down the menu. I alternate between this and K-Bap as it's across the lot and equally tasty. There is nothing better than turning the corner to get a good wiff of all the ingredients you're about to devour. This food truck sits on the corner of Market and Vineyard in Wailuku Town. There's lots of parking in the nearby structure. They make everything quickly and have a cute seating area. I wish they would make things spicier as even when we ask for HOT (Thai spicy kine hot), it's still pretty mild. Had a nice evening planned at Iao Theater, so we went to town early and ordered dinner at HI Thai Food Truck. Parked in the Banyou Tree Park, it's one of the coolest looking vintage trucks and it looks like a permanent fixture in the park. It may be a permanent attraction here, because the food is really good. They were very pleasant and answered our questions about the menu and we ordered the Drunken Noodles with Chicken. Then came the choice of the amount of heat. We know that Thai food can be spicy enough to make you beg for a glass of milk. The cautious one of us wanted mild and the risk taker bumped it up to medium. It only took a few minutes to prepare the dish. We asked for soy sauce and got a small cup that was adequate. Chopsticks and napkins were provided, too. The park picnic tables were tipped up on end and chained to the banyon tree. That was an awkward position for us to use, so we left the park and found a bench further down the street. I was impressed that our food looked very nearly that in the picture on their menu (except that the menu pic had beef). We had a section of lemon to squeeze over the dish, too. The Drunken Noodle dish was delicious. The thick rice noodles had very good texture and flavor. The veggies were varied and plentiful. There was quite a bit of chicken that was a bit chewy but tasty. The level of heat was quite noticeable but didn't bring beads of perspiration, tears or a runny nose. I like that there was aluminum foil separating the food from the somewhat porous clamshell box. Great food, good location and friendly owners. They consistently serve fresh and tasty Thai food. We usually get the Pad Thai with chicken or shrimp, Holy Basil Pork belly and my go to is the pumpkin shrimp. Then we'll add either Thai fried rice, chicken satay or spring rolls depending on what we're in the mood for. Everything is delicious but want to focus on a couple of faves. My picture does not do the holy basil pork belly dish justice. Hiding under that fried egg is yummy pieces of pork belly, green and red bell peppers, onions, basil, and green beans. Once you break the egg and the yoke oozes over all of that goodness, it's amazing. The pumpkin shrimp is another favorite of ours. Such a good balance of seafood with the kobocha squash and really flavorful. Call ahead so you don't have to wait at the truck and won't miss out on their popular dishes that often sell out before close. read more

So down at the end of market street is the Banyon tree and Hi Thai Is parked. I found out later the location is permanent. Great, I can come for take out. Love this place! Came here for the first time yesterday and the people who run this truck are super sweet. I ordered the veggie fried rice and chicken pad thai. The price is great for what you get. The veggie fried rice was very flavorful and filling. I liked that they put a side of fresh cucumbers, it's a nice touch with the meal. The chicken pad thai was also very good, but I wish they added cilantro with it. Maybe next time I'll ask if they can add it in. There are very limited tables and chairs. Before the pandemic hit I would always see the food truck parked on the corner of the intersection in happy valley. When the pandemic hit, I tried this place out bc I finally had free time. My first time here, I LOVED IT! But haven't gone until a year later. On my way home from work, I wanted to eat curry and this was on the way home. I called my order in, parked by the bank and picked up my order. Affordable! Delicious! Authentic! FRESH! Fulfilling! I ordered: Panang curry w/ chicken. Spice level- Thai hot. It comes with rice & salad! Total cost? $11 (NO TAX). I even got a Thai iced tea for $3 (NO TAX). The Thai iced tea is just perfect! Total tab: $14! I'm a Thai food lover, so the fact that this is up the road from me and the food is so ono is an absolute win for me. SEATING: it's an outdoor seating under the banyan tree with lots of space for social distancing. I introduced my siblings and cousins to this place and we came back the next day. They LOVED it as well. When I decide to stray away from the curry, I'll try something different on their menu. You might be put off by the parking situation, but park in a loading zone at Iao theater. They also do curbside. Just call them when you arrive. The owners are generous. Their prices are very reasonable. The food is mouth watering and FRESH! I'll support them time and time again just so they'll never have to go out of business. If you're in the area, I highly suggest you give them a visit. I've tried so many Thai restaurants on this island and although they're all good this will be my new GO-TO when I'm in town. P.S. As visitors in Maui, my mom and I were eager to sample the food truck scene on the island. And I'm glad HI Thai was part of that experience! They've got authentic and customizable Thai food that I would pay good money to eat at a sit-down restaurant. The flavor and value that this spot has to offer is hard to turn down. They have a modest selection of dishes and specials, which you can enjoy with your protein and spice level of choice. I called around an hour before closing to place an order and picked it up in 20 minutes. Asking for everything spicy, I ordered the... - Eggplant Basil with Mahi Mahi: So rich and flavorful! There's a good deal of oil in this one, thanks to the wok-fried eggplant that soaks it up like a sponge, but it's all worthwhile. The Mahi Mahi we added to the dish had an almost chicken-like substance to it. The sides also balanced out the dish quite nicely. (The salad cancels out all the calories, right?) - Drunken Noodles with Shrimp: Great bit of spice to this one. Really generous portion of noodles--we had to pack this one to finish later--but I wish there was more shrimp. We must've gotten 4-5 pieces in the whole dish. The noodles were a bit dry for my taste, but their flavor still had me reaching for more! - Panang Curry with Tofu and Vegetables: This one packed the biggest punch in terms of spice, probably because it's served steaming hot. There was a generous portion of tofu that soaked up the flavor of the curry really nicely! Between the aromatics and the spice going on here, this was our favorite dish among the three. This was more than enough food for the two of us, and the bill came out to $40 with a beverage included. (Talk about a good deal!) There are several large picnic tables set up by the food truck, which is where we decided to eat our food. But we did have to swat away some flies throughout our meal. There also seems to be a resident cat on the premises that wasn't afraid to hop on our table and ask for food, but a staff member quickly put out some cat food to keep it distracted. If we were staying nearby, we probably would've opted for takeaway. Would recommend this spot to anyone looking for no-frills Thai food in the area! After seeing several check ins from fellow yelper Rob K., I knew I was missing out on something & finally went to check it out. Got there a couple minutes after they opened & there were already several people that had placed there orders. Noticed that quite a few others had done phone orders, which was smart as I can imagine this area gets busy during lunch time. Saw a lot of my usual thai favorites on there, drunken noodles, pad thai, & green papaya salad. Decided to go be a little healthier & went with the pad thai with tofu medium spice level. Prices on the board are what you pay, I was ready with my change, but that wasn't necessary. They have benches where you can eat & wait for your food which was nice. Didn't wait too long before mine was ready. Container was very full & smelled amazing. A lime was included, which to me is better on there then lemon. The taste was very good a bit on the milder side but less is always better then too much. Once the lime was on it, it was fine. Spice level was good, I could definitely go up a level for next time, but it's always better safe then sorry. Portions were generous as I had enough for another meal. Yum! This is great tasting Thai food and you get a HUGE portion. Hubbs and I were in Wailuku hungrily driving around looking for a food truck when we spied this one and luckily managed to get a parking place right in front of it. The menu is small, with daily specials, but there is plenty of choice with authentic dishes. We decided to get a red and a green curry, both with shrimp, and share them. The green was fresh and herby tasting, the red slightly sweeter and richer, but both were nicely spicy, very creamy and packed full of veggies (broccoli, carrot, onion, bamboo, Thai basil, etc) with 6 large tail on peeled shrimp in each serving. Each was served with white rice, a green side salad, peanuts and sweet chili sauce. So. Much. Food! When Hubbs ordered they kindly told him there was a big phone order being cooked and it would be a 20 mins wait for our order. In the end it was only 10 mins wait which was definitely worth it for our delicious lunch. We had a picnic in our car but there were a few tables outside the truck for customers, each full of people eating and everyone looked happy and satisfied with their dishes. Pricing was very competitive, especially since there is enough for 2 meals in one serving. Although we ate everything up in one go for lunch and skipped dinner that night, and spent most of the day in a food coma...lol. We have eaten at a few Thai food trucks in Kahului/Wailuku and this is by far our favourite. Looking forward to our next visit where I will try the Pad Thai with tofu :) read more

Currently super into the food truck scene at the moment and after reading reviews from my Yelp Friends, Rob K. & Shantal P., I put this on my 'to-do' list. So while most of Maui's food trucks move around the island to various events, parties, etc. Hi Thai seems to be the exception and doesn't really move all that often (not that I'm aware anyway). The great part about it is, you can always count on finding them under the Market St. banyan tree in the heart of Wailuku town. Aside from their usual 11:00 am - 6:30 pm hours, they are also open during First Fridays (a town party that happens every "First Friday" of the month) which is when I was finally able to give them a try. I must've either went too late or they reduce their menu size on First Fridays, but their menu was quite small that evening. There was just a small selection of curries, pad thais, spring rolls, & drinks. Nothing really stood out, so I settled on shrimp pad thai, an order of spring rolls, & thai tea. They accept cash & card, so payment was a breeze. The food also came out pretty quick. I honestly didn't have too many expectations since I'm not big on pad thai. It was just the best sounding item based on their small menu, but once I dug in and took a bite I was pleasantly surprised with how delicious it was! The noodles were cooked perfectly, the flavors paired well, & it wasn't oddly sweet like other places that I've tried. I've had pad thai at 4 different places on island now and I must say, this was the best version so far. I may actually consider getting it again in the future! The real winner though I think were the spring rolls. They were crispy and the flavors meshed really well and the dipping sauce they provide gave it that extra ooomph to take it up another level. Highly recommend! Oh & their thai tea was not too shabby either. Glad I was finally able to try out their grub! Hopefully next time I'll catch them with a wider selection of menu items like their drunken noodles or the chicken satay. I am hooked on two dishes; the Thai beef salad and the coconut curry. My wife likes their chicken satay and fried rice. Hidden, but not so hidden gem in Wailuku town. I've driven past this food truck countless times and I've always wanted to try, but parking in this area during the weekday is horrid. So I decided to live life on the edge and give it a try...on a Wednesday. I noticed on their Yelp page you could order online which is so much easier, but for the life of me could not get it to work. I later realized that online ordering will only work on your phone, not on a computer. Everything is made to order, so wait times can be long per many reviews. So I called mines in and I'm glad I did. Thanked my lucky stars I was able to snag a parking right in front of their truck. Was greeted by a very nice gentleman who accommodated my last minute add on for any extra Mango sticky rice. Which I'm so glad I got. I also noticed they have Thai Tea with Boba, which wasn't on their online menu. So worth the call for specials. I decided on Thai Coffee which has that very strong and thick coffee that I love and it went well with the coconut milk. I'm such a sucker for peanut butter anything, so it was a no brainer that I'd be eating the Chicken Satay which I got with no rice all salad. And you know I had to have mango sticky rice for dessert. If you plan to eat there they have some picnic tables under a beautiful Banyan tree, perfect place to enjoy. Prices are great and the food amazing, well worth the trouble to find parking. Right in front of the north shore hostel :) cute place with twinkly lights. There are some tables and chairs for you to sit outside and eat. We ordered the fresh fish stir ginger fry and wanted it spicy. Flavors were bursting and went so well with the jasmine rice. There were two medium chunks of fish.
