Indeed Hillside Farmacy is a cute brunch spot, and I enjoyed the pharmacy touches in the restaurant. The food here was delicious; the Big Brekkie was an all-around solid brunch choice. I also ordered the crab cake that was fantastic and full of crab flavor; however, it was quite expensive for just one crab cake. The Brulee Grapefruit was the perfect ending to the brunch experience. Though everything tasted great, the service left more to be desired. A lot of my time here was spent waiting for my order to be taken, water refills were slow, and I waited almost 30 minutes to get my check. Overall I think it's a great brunch location! read more

"Located in the heart of East Austin in a beautiful historical landmark building on East 11th Street. Home to Doc Young and his Drugstore in the 1920's, one of the few owned and operated by an African American pharmacist." The inside has been lovingly restored. We started off with a carafe of house punch for the table, it comes in a beaker? Is that's what it's called? A thing Frankenstein used. The drink was very good, light and not too acidic. On that note, the coffee here is also very good. Cesar $14 - The romaine here is TOUGH. You can practically feel your stomach digesting it. Would not recommend. The story of the restaurant is that it used to be a pharmacy and they kept the pharmacy vibe, and they also use farm fresh ingredients, hence the name Farmacy. Very cute and very original. I was insanely hungover so I wanted something bready and savory. The fried egg sandwich hit the spot. The egg was nicely fried with a runny yolk and the thick Texas toast was crunchy and delicious. If I wasn't so hungover I would have loved to try one of the yummy sounding drinks on their menu. Before my very 1st visit to Hillside, I had read previous reviews given that mentioned the quality of service not being the best but still wanted to check it out for brunch....sadly, the previous reviews given about sub par quality of service were proven correct during my visit to Hillside Farmacy. I was w/ 2 others & since it was a Saturday, we did have to wait a little bit for a table, which was no big deal since it was such a beautiful Saturday, we just took a short stroll down 11th street while we waited. Parking~I was able to find street parking right next to the restaurant. Food~I had the pancakes, topped w/ fresh fruit. The pancakes were so fluffy & delicious! And were a good size. I was only able to eat half & took the rest home. Drinks~my friend & I shared the larger mimosa option & we each got 2 drinks out of it. As far as the service, after the hostess sat us at the table, we were sitting there for 15 minutes before my friend had to flag down the waitress to come over to our table. I could understand if they had been busy but it wasn't. The waitress was just standing near the patio door & didn't bother to even come check on us once we were seated by the hostess. I went to Hillside Farmacy for brunch and really enjoyed my time there. The atmosphere was lively and full of energy. I appreciated the beautiful tiling and intricate details the space had. The accent of dark green painted wood made the restaurant more quaint and rustic-farmhouse feeling. I ordered the big brekkie (funny name haha). The eggs were a good amount of runny, the potatoes were crispy and fluffy, and the bacon was a nice amount of smokey. The jam felt like it was made fresh which was a nice touch to a full meal. It was filling but not heavy which is something I value in a healthy breakfast. Definitely come here when you're hungry and want a spot to hang out for brunch. During a visit to Austin I stayed at a quaint AirBNB and within walking distance was this beautiful historic building beautifully preserved. I knew that of all the meals I could have there I would want it to be for brunch. On Sunday morning, my pup and I walked less than 5 minutes to our table for 2 on the patio. Greeted by a welcoming hostess she brought Jasper a bowl of water. Next, Zara checked in on us and I was ready to order. I don't usually order pancakes but this time I couldn't resist their fluffy buttermilk pancakes with Mexican vanilla, blueberry compote and powdered sugar accompanied by drip coffee with a splash of creme and raw sugar. I first ordered the egg bowl which they informed me didn't have half the ingredients.. proceeded to inform us that they were out of 5 additional plates.. with a limited menu and it being midday, we had wished for more options. I got the Kale Caesar with a poached egg and my friend got the fried egg sandwich. The salad was a mountain of large kale pieces with the thick spine attached and dressing caught in clumps on some leaves and none on others.. didn't have much flavor... wish the pieces were cut smaller and it had more extra toppings.. the fried egg sandwich was a better choice but still simple and basic. The ambiance is great - it looks like it would be a great date night spot. The service is the worst I've had in Austin and I've lived here for 6 years. It took 35 minutes to get my nonalcoholic drink from the bar and the waitress mixed up who got what sides for our mains. Everything I've ever eaten from here has been really good. Had the down home punch and it was spectacular and love the special flare of it being served in a chemistry flask. Caesar salad was excellent and was heavily emphasizing the anchovies which is usually not my favorite, but it was perfectly balanced. I had the fried green tomato sandwich and the bread was toasted to perfection in the egg was runny and awesome. I've had the burger and fries which is delicious as well. You cannot beat the ambience in this place - it's sort of like old pharmacy chic. The old wooden bar is lovely and there's lots of other visible and lovely details. The staff is always really great and really friendly; had no idea they served oysters and will definitely get those next time! It is somewhat pricey, but not outrageous. I have loved Hillside over the years but I think my experience on Saturday is part of a broader problem in Austin - restaurants don't compete on quality and service anymore because the people will show up no matter what. Years ago, you needed to go the extra mile in order to stay in business - but today, reservations are so tough to get that a mediocre meal is enough to draw a crowd. I took my mom to Hillside for her birthday. The menu was the usuals - Ceasar salad, a fish, a burger, a steak, a chicken. The meal was fine, but uninspired. We had called earlier ask about a surprise dessert for my mom. At the end of the meal, the waiter came by and said "I hear its someone's birthday. You get a free dessert. What would you like?" He then brought the dessert, no candle, nothing special, no surprise - just a free dessert. I have a special place in my heart for local restaurants - I just hope they can find inspiration and once again make this a great food city. read more

Went for an early dinner and sat outside on their patio. Their 2 person tables are honestly a little too small for comfort. If we had ordered anything else outside of just our meals, it would have been rough and super uncomfortable. You now ordered on your phone and they bring your food out to you when ready. Ordered their panzanella salad which was pretty good minus the bread chunks (which you're supposed to use semi stale) however these chunks were just too big when you're dealing with hard bread.
