Tonight was not the night for great service at Hinoki Sushi. The first thing we saw when entering the restaurant was several dirty tables and no one tending to them. Once seated, it took a while to be approached by our server, who was a bit abrasive in her Customer Service approach. To start, we ordered Mussels that were room temperature at best. My husband had the Hawaiian Poke Salad, which was phenomenal and I had two rolls, a Bonsai and a Caterpillar that were very good as well. My husband ordered a Miso soup that never arrived and then his order didn't get served until I was almost finished with mine. My husband also wanted to have a Japanese beer and went with Asahi beer, surprisingly a product of Italy. I landed at the airport and wanted sushi. I called from the airport to verify that they had availability and told them I would be there in 10 minutes. When I arrived, they told me there was a 20 minute wait. I asked them why they didn't tell me that when I called. The girl at the desk basically called me a liar. Was able to avert that challenge by getting delivery and am happy I did! Delivery on a Friday noon time was less than 30 minutes. One of my favorite all-you-can-eat sushi spots! Hinoki always offers the best taste/quality of fish, the nigiri is consistently delicious every visit. I recommend getting the Escolar, super yummy butterfish that isn't offer in other restaurants. The appetizers appear to be simple, but it's a really good break in between the sushi. I'm pretty shocked I've never written a review for Hinoki since its my go to spot and happy place restaurant wise. I remember when Hinoki first opened years ago and Gerson and team are still doing an amazing job. I've tried various other AYCE sushi places in Reno, but Hinoki is always top notch, rarely ever have a bad dining experience. I've got two go to spots in Nevada, Hinoki and Sushi Koma. The fish is always pretty fresh and they have a variety of different rolls. I've moved onto hand rolls for the most part and love that they allow some customization to some of them. The Ceviche, Mountain, and Spider hand rolls are some of my favorites. Everybody here makes the whole environment great, whether I'm at the bar dining solo or with my wife, I always have an awesome experience. Always look forward to my next visit to Hinoki. read more

I was going to go to another place close by, but they were on vacation. I saw this place and they had all you can eat. I know all you can eat generally the quality of fish is average. I ordered cucumber salad, miso soup, nigiri (salmon, albacore, hamachi, tuna, Inari, beef tataki, and shrimp). The salad was pretty good as well as the miso soup. The sushi rice was bland almost like it was just rice, no sushi vinegar. The fish as I mentioned was just average. The one that was interesting was the Inari which usually rice stuffed into the fried bean curd pouch. They cut it in half and placed the strip over the ball of rice. The food and service are excellent, and I do highly recommend a visit. Rated a 4 star and not 5 because the bathrooms need to be cleaned from top to bottom because it's off putting. The floors, trash, sink and toilets need a good scrub down. We will revisit again but if the bathrooms remain dirty we will find another place to eat. I would come back here just for the amazing customer service from Alicia! This woman was incredible despite being SO busy. She was so kind and thorough and kept checking in even though she was dealing with so many different things at once. The place is clean and there are multiple sushi chefs. I've been a couple times now and it's always pretty busy come dinner time. I think the sushi is decent for Reno standards. You're not gonna get much better for the price around here. Tried Hinoki years ago, not long after they opened and remember liking it a but more, but after this last visit I don't know when I will return. First, I want to say that the staff was kind and doing the best they could with how busy it was when we were there. My main issue was with the food. It's not even that it was necessarily bad, it's just that the variety was a bit lacking which is definitely something I look for in a good AYCE spot I'd like to revisit. I will give them props in that they have a couple of rolls you won't find anywhere else, but just when you compare all of the rolls on their menu, it starts to feel repetitive quickly. Also, of everything my girlfriend and I tried, nothing was really a stand out. I would like to give Hinoki one more shot because I never hear anything but good reviews from everyone else I speak with about this place, but I think that was also part of the problem, it just didn't live up to all of the hype. The place itself is very nice. Extremely clean, the layout is efficient. I will be sure to give the food one more shot and potentially adjust my review accordingly at that time. read more

I went to the Japanese restaurant tonight not knowing what to expect they had exceptional Japanese cuisine the dining experience was nothing short of spectacular. my wife and I ate there we were both very happy we've ate at many different sushi places in Reno such as sushi Pier Tokyo sushi the sushi place in Atlantis none of which have compared to this extraordinary place. each piece of the sushi was an amazing ly crafted masterpiece I'm not joking when I tell you that each piece tasted differently some like lime some had mango some spicy and some even crunchy absolutely amazing both me and my wife completely enjoyed this food was great. the staff kept coming back to our table to check on us and make sure that we had everything I really loved also the cucumber salad and a seaweed salad I've never had either one of those and they were both phenomenal I would recommend this place to anyone that really enjoys sushi and not just rice but actually the fish also. read more

Disappointed again. I ordered my usual via GrubHub: miso soup, edamame, the vegan green giant, vegan tempura veggie and, vegan Fuji mountain. I was most annoyed to receive the miso soup with a note stating it was not vegan, it was made with fish stock. I've been there countless times, had multiple convos about being vegan and never once has anyone told me the miso had fish in it. Now I don't know if I was given poor information today, or if I received bad information the last 5 visits. Today's rolls were mediocre at best. Not because they were bad just not my favorite items to get for sushi. We came to Hinoki on the advise of a co-worker. We live on the opposite side of town and took his recommendation for a recent date night dinner. Overall, the dining room was pretty busy but the bar was open when we came in. That quickly changed in about 20 minutes as 7pm came around. Our chef kept up with the crowd OK but our service slowed down a bit. The sushi was just OK, nothing special. Standard ginormous rolls with everything under the sun covered in sauces and toppings. For me, the true tests of a sushi bar's standards are a few nigiri items; yellowtail, salmon, tuna. If these aren't fresh, there is no hiding it. They were meh. Bonus points for escolar, it was pretty dang good. That's not something we find here in Reno! The upside-down shrimp we had was positively FISHY tasting and not in a good way. For the distance from our home and price for AYCE, Hinoki won't be on our regular rotation. read more

Damn it feels good to be back at AYCE sushi! The pandemic put a pause on my AYCE sushi prowess, but I'm slowly getting back in the groove. Hinoki was my go to before, and it still is now. A lot has changed about this experience for me in the post "you know what" world, including the price, but I am still happy to give my money and enjoy the experience knowing I'm supporting the passionate business owners and their talented team here. One thing hasn't changed here, and that's the consistency of the experience and the flavor in the food here. The classics are still there, like the Ceviche roll, but the team has also added quite a few new rolls to the mix as of recently, most of which pack a lot of fresh raw fish into them! I enjoy most of these as hand rolls and I've become a big fan of the Volcano, with spicy tuna, yellowtail, green onion, and topped with their habanero sauce for a little extra fire! I'm also pretty fond of the Cherry Blossom and the Odd Future too. Another of the big changes in my dining experiences here is that I'm now joined by my two adorable kids! I love that they are so into sushi. We've been feeding them whatever we've been eating since the get go, so there aren't many foods they don't like, and that makes me so happy. The staff has always been super attentive, and it's no different now. They are so kind to the kids and help keep them entertained, engaged and enjoying themselves during the meal. Very small rolls, especially for the 9.99 price. Quality was okay, but not nearly enough food for 2 people. The seaweed salad was not house made and was barely an appetizer. Can't believe that it took me this long to find literally the best Sushi in Reno and surrounding areas. Super fresh, perfect temperature and the entire sushi bar and restaurant was super clean. You can tell they truly enjoy what they do and care about their guests. I may not have been active in reviewing other sushi places in Reno, but honestly if it's just ok I don't waste my time. The Casanova, The Odd, and the King Kong were the top 3. We did eat 10 rolls. You've got to experience this place to believe it. I eat sushi at least 2 times a month, so I will see them very soon. My family have been going here for years. Their sushi is always fresh and delicious and their service is consistently very good. If you aren't hungry enough to do all you can eat, try their poke bowl. Filling and delicious. Ample parking outside and plenty of tables inside.
