HMS Bounty is one of my favorite hangouts and dive bars in all of LA. My girlfriend and I love walking down here on the weekend for a mid-day cocktail or an evening nightcap. This place is the best. Their breakfast special is great for $8.99 (used to be $6), but it's a sold quick snack if you want something to nibble on here. Beyond the baseball steak and the sandwiches, the food is okay. You only go to the HMS Bounty for drinks, not food. My favorite special they have is the Wiseman- a shot of tequila or whiskey with a beer for $6. Honestly, the cocktails here are also amazing. As others have highlighted it has a decor like The Frolic Room and the nearby Prince giving off a Mad Men vibe. It's definitely 50s and 60s classic bar vibes with an East Coast decor of stereotypical classic bars. The U-shaped booths and lively staff make this place amazing. There is no bathroom on site, but luckily they share one with next door. I've had plenty of great times here and will have plenty of more. If you're in K-town, definitely check it out. It's a slight walk from the Wiltern, but there is plenty to do nearby. Also it's easily accessible with metered street parking, parking garages and a nearby Metro subway stop. read more

Staff were really nice and personable, making jokes and checking in on us regularly. I was really surprised by the affordability of the prices, i definitely want to come back and try more menu items. I tried the chicken wings and I love that they came dry with the sauce on the side because I love crispy chicken! Drinks were nothing to rave about but again, affordable overall. Would recommend.. only downside is that it's pretty dark in there but it's a bar so understandable! read more

We went to get drinks and the security guard gave us a really hard time for sitting at a booth when the 4 of us ordered from the bar because he claimed we were supposed to be eating to sit there. There were no signs that said so nor were any of the people around us eating. he started to talk right behind my back standing behind me. He treated us as though we were BYOB and even came to shove the receipt of the table next to us as to how much they spent. I told him he was being rude and I didn't care. We would have drank and purchased more but he harassed us to try to prove a moot point and made us feel extremely unwelcome. WHY WOULD YOU TREAT ANY PAYING CUSTOMERS LIKE THAT??? Cocktails are horrible as well as the terrible service from a security guard. read more

Food: 3/5 If I am being honest, food is nothing special. Its not inedible, but when I go back, im definitely not going back for the food. Our table got the ribeye sandwich, the baseball steak, and fish and chips. The food was average, nothing special. They did get the temperature correct for the steak. A little under seasoned for my taste. Service: 4.5/5 I loved our waiter. He always came by when we needed water or anything. He was also very happy to be working, which is always a positive. They werent too overwhelming but wasnt absent either. Price 4/5 For those three dishes and three IPAs, it was around 50 bucks pretip. So i would say thats a great price especially for LA. Vibes: 4.5/5 If you like late 90s music and early 2000's music, youre gonna love this spot. In general it feels like an older english pub and i enjoyes the vibe. read more

The Bar has a very cool aesthetic, old school "dive bar". The clientele was also VERY cool. The bartenders, however, were TERRIBLE!!!

Went to lunch , very dark but Historic! Everyone's food was delicious I had fish n chips, one person had baked fish, another had seafood pasta all good , Great service Next to Historic Gaylord Hotel! Parking meter or around the corner at Old Brown Derby plaza parking lot! This is a great place for Romantic Dinner dark , leather booths Variety of menu! American seafood and Steak Best to uber or lyft parking meters only good for 1 hour! Like walking into old Rat Pack hideaway , red leather seats and booths !they do have a Happy Hour ! We would all return !American food Good food and Service! read more

Dropping down my review based on a pre-pandemic experience I had here with the crusty old female bartender. I came here numerous times over the years because it's as close as one can come to being in 1950's Los Angeles ... from the menu which features 1960's classics like a Monte Cristo and carving board sandwiches. Before people came to expect quinoa and tuna poke bowls and wood grilled black truffle and speck pizzas, folks ordered simple sandwiches ... ham, roast beef, etc. Somewhere along the line that got boring in an instagram world and in place of freshly made, freshly carved ham ... giant food service packets of pre-sliced cold cuts replaced fresh. Not at vintage spots like the Tam O Shanter and HMS Bounty where you'll get the real deal. The prices are also quite amazing. Sandwiches with a scoop of potato salad, macaroni salad or coleslaw (also very retro yet appropriate sides) are under $10. They serve a grilled baseball steak for under $20 which is just as good as the (now shuttered) Pacific Dining Car at 1/3 of the price. The food here is not fancy but it's good. The atmosphere is dimly lit. So much so that you may need your phone light to read the menu. It has that 50's/60's vibe with lots of red pleather half moon booths ... many with aged brass plaques with regular celebrity patrons of yore, with Webb from Dragnet having the best of all booths. The vibe is somewhat nautical if you look closely but think of a dimly lit lounge where Starsky and Hutch would meet Huggybear for a vice bust on an old cops and robbers tv show. They don't have an on-premises restroom ... you go through the lobby of a 1920's style apartment complex and down the stairs where you again enter the 1950's and an aqua blue and green painted laundry room. Literally this could be a set of the 1969 Dragnet tv show. As a lover of all things vintage, I have to appreciate and soak in this vibe even if it is a washroom/restroom/laundry room. Now for my one star off ... the older female bartender has always been a bit crusty. I chalked it up to the whole 'dingy dive' vibe and at first it was almost cute when she would roll her eyes or sigh and mutter under her breath when I'd ask for a minute to think about my drink ... or ask if they could make my old fashioned a special way. However, I had eaten my meal at a booth (the mustached Mexican guy is an awesome waiter ... funny, capable and kind btw) and ambled over to the bar to have a drink at the bar while killing time before a meeting. I sat down and she came over and said, "You can't sit there." I was taken aback and got up. "Why not?" I asked. "Because I said so." she said. I thought maybe she recognized me from my past appearances here and was being playful so I sat back down. "What did I just tell you?" she snapped. "Um. I thought you were kidding." I said. "Nope. Someone else is sitting there." she snapped. I mentioned that I had been at the other side for 45 minutes and there was nobody there ... more in defense of myself than trying to be difficult. I walked to the other end of the somewhat empty bar and sat down. As I was moving, I heard her say 'Idiot' under her breath. She started washing glasses on the other side of the bar ... not coming over to ask for my drink order. Fully knowing I had just sat down. I called across the bar for a beer. After a couple minutes she came over and slapped a bottle of beer down (there are no beers on draft) and ordered payment. After my beer, I walked out and almost oblivious to what had happened she called out, "Have a nice day sir." But not in a sarcastic tone. Like she actually meant it. That left me wondering if I was in analternate universe or if she was just bipolar. I've been back since and while not overly friendly, she isn't as horrid. Although once I saw her berate a customer for playing the jukebox. Why have a jukebox, a dive bar badge of honour, if you don't want people to play it. Bottom line ... great spot for cheap retro style eats and vibe. Hipsters unfortunately are starting to find it and stagger in after all you can eat crab at the restaurant down the street. But a weekday lunch will keep you clear of blogging influencers and give you some relaxing dimness from the strong California sun. read more

Folks expecting an English pub are not going to get what they want (read the bad reviews about no beers on tap, inauthentic cocktails, etc.). This is a vibey dive bar with the same mixture of cultures as the neighborhood of Koreatown. The employees are lifers, they are super nice if you aren't a snob, and they will build a longterm relationship with repeat visitors. Personally, I love the old school neighborhood dive bar vibe, roomy classic booths, and low ego. It's just a good chill joint to get a beer or a whiskey with some friends or with the bartender if your friends aren't around. read more

Went on a first tinder date here with a guy, we got drinks and apps and we eventually kissed but nothing offensive and the bar was a bit empty so we didn't really think it would be an issue. However, an older Asian male waiter walked up asked us to keep it down. We weren't reactive in the situation but it was definitely uncomfortable and probably a cultural/generational thing. Nonetheless, I think this was unfair, especially for a bar. Anyways, we just paid the bill and had a blast a brass monkey across the street. It didn't event work out with the guy, but just posting this for any queer/lgbt/allys out there considering this place for a date night. read more

Not sure what changed at HMS but they are transphobic + misogynistic and I will never come back. Last night my friend was told there was a dress code and they were denied entry because they weren't "properly dressed", (they were wearing a dress). After some back and forth, the door person then said my friend come come in but they had to wear a jacket because "men can't have their shoulders uncovered." Mind you, I was wearing a tube top and was allowed in because I'm not a "male", according to the door person. I've been coming here for years and never heard of a "dress code" this person seemingly made up. They clearly didn't want to allow my friend to come in because they are trans. A few moments later, another friend showed up and the same person told her she looked "very tired" and was she sure she wanted to come in? I don't understand the rudeness and outright discrimination we faced last night, something I had never experienced before at this place. When we spoke to other employees about our experience they seemed to understand and acknowledge that this is common problem at the establishment. Disappointed. read more

Los Angeles is a place that eats its young and especially eats its classic old places. It's a joy every time I walk through the door of the HMS Bounty. It's a classic. The bar is great! The banquettes are great. The back rooms are great. Staff helpful and food's good. You should go and enjoy or go somewhere to have some fusion sriracha tacos and do whatever it is you like to do if that's your cup of tea. read more

I hadn't been here in nearly 25 years due to my relocation, and had always loved the experience of The Bounty. The casual atmosphere , the great cocktails, the food, and the sheer comfort that would transpire just walking in that door would always bring me back. Last week I went with my son and my longtime friend for her birthday dinner and was thrilled to find that none of the above had changed! The service was as friendly as always, and the food, though not the same price-wise (haha) was still amazing and a wonderful price for the quality of the meal. The server, at the end of the meal, presented my friend with a big slice of chocolate cake, lit a candle, and began to sing the HB song solo, at which point we, and the people at the bar, all joined in. (Due to the late time on a weekday there were no other diners left. Note that this was another testament to attitude of The Bounty, because in most cases a restaurant tries to give you "the rush" when they are near closing time. ) All in all, we stayed 3 hours, had six (excellent) cocktails between us (not counting the drink that was sent to my friend by a random friendly customer at the bar who had joined in the singing), and 3 dinners. The bill before tip came to a mere $140.00, The way I see it is that relative to today's economy, this is still the same value as 25 years ago! For a casual night out I insist you pop into The HMS Bounty! Nothing has changed, and this is still one of the hidden (it's inside of a hotel) jewels of Los Angeles! read more

Day/Time: Thursday / 5:20pm - 7:45pm Location: Booths in the Bar area (walked in, a few people at the bar, two couples at two tables, good atmosphere - yea, it's a nautical theme, but it's much more...good lighting, red leather Booths, nostalgia that ypu probably feel whether you're 20 or 80...) Music: 80s and then motown. (Would be a great venue for live jazz) Food: steak quesadilla (yumm!!), pork chops (yumm - home made taste right down to being a little overdone from mom being a little too worried about eating raw pork), fish and chips (ok, but TBH batteries was a little soggy), chocolate cake (good but, take that with a grain of salt...it was post 4 whiskey sours) Drinks: whiskey sour, new york sour (bartender didn't know what it was and mixed the red instead of floating, but it was still good), manhattan - good!, old fashioned. Overall, good, stiff drinks at a good price. Service: well timed. It's like the waitress knew we wanted to have a leisurely night. First drnks came out within minutes of ordering. About 15 minutes until the waitress took our food order...great for enjoying cocktails and having conversation. Food took about 20 minutes from ordering, but drinks came out within minutes of ordering. Staff was attentive throughout the night. Parking: being local we walked, but there's validated parking around the corner just west at Brown Derby Plaza (on Alexandria). read more

It's everything I had heard it was. Everything I expected. And everything I wanted. Came for a staff "bonding" Happy Hour at 4 pm on a Friday... and immediately we just loved it more than our regular haunt at the Line Hotel - this is a place where you can talk - you can have loud conversations - and you order their special "shot and a beer" and it's all good. I love that the place smells a little smoky - I'm down with the smoking when you're drinking crowd. I love that our server rolled her eyes when our least favorite staffer ordered a strawberry daiquiri (for real?). I love that my request for a "very tall, very strong Tom Collins" granted me a smile from our saucy server. And they can make the hell out of a Tom Collins. This is a gin and beer joint. It's a hang. It's a dive bar with OK food. It's everything you need if you're not the sort of person that wants an $18 nonsense cocktail. You come here to get a little f'ed up. And they have enough food options to make it feel right. It's like what my favorite college bars looked like only with some grown-ups thrown in - and I didn't feel old. They open at 11 am and I think - look, I'm a stress case... If I'm having a bad day, no one would judge me for coming here at 2 and asking them to pour some Bailey's into my afternoon coffee. Bit of a serious crush on this place. And my pics will be all dark because - yeah, it's dark in there. Some things are better left in the dark. read more

Been going to the Bounty for years, and it is a true treasure of LA. If Cheers had a West Coast parallel, this would be it. Good food, good specials, good crowds and you will be hard-pressed to find old school dive bars that are so well maintained while keeping such reasonable prices compared the other bars/restaurants in LA. BEWARE. We were denied service because my daughter has a service dog. They insisted the Dept. of Public Health said they need to see an "ID Card" (no such thing exists). We are reporting them to the DOJ for breaking ADA laws. (We're glad we didn't stay anyway - the place reeks of weed.) read more

I used to go here regularly for years and had a good time. Unfortunately, I do not know what the change was, but I started consistently receiving transphobic harassment from the bouncer for using the bathroom. This would include direct mockery and frequent demands to see my ID independently from when I ordered a drink. Do not go here if you want to be treated with basic human dignity. read more

I'm a regular now. Ribeye for 18.99? Porterhouse for 21.99? Go ahead and find me a better steak deal in LA that actually tastes on point? I'll wait. We've walked past HMS hundreds of times. It just looks like a tiny dark dive bar, but there's much more substance to this place than what you might see. Its dark inside, but it has character. Definitely has a Cheers type vibe, since you got regulars that have been going their whole lives, to the newbies like myself. Everyone is having conversations together with strangers. Its a good vibe here. Came in for drinks the first time and realized they had a ribeye on the menu. Saw the price and decided to go for it. With little expectation that ribeye was a nice thick cut, and cooked perfectly. Whoever is manning the grill there knows what they're doing . Drink prices are deals here too. Saw the old time regulars had some taquitos, and figured they know what they're doing, and damn they did. Get the taquitos here and dont ask questions. They are FIRE. My go to for steak cravings or just a night for some drinks that dont break the bank, and of course the Taquitos. Check this place out. read more

I'll start off by saying, it wasn't price bad. Food was okay. Cocktails were weak. They didn't have bud light. My beer of choice. Customer service was okay, nothing special. It was nice to see people from all walks of life. The bar did have a good back in the day vibe. Lots of wood. Would I go back. No but I don't live in the area, if I did yeah why not. read more

Avoid!!! We walked in wanting to only get a few drinks, but were told that all members of the party had to order drinks. We were given the ultimatum of ordering a bottled water or a shot of whiskey to meet their lame $10 minimum. Our "waitress" waited 30 minutes to tell us that paying all cash would void this rule. Our tab paid for at the bar did not meet this $10 minimum and we were forced to order unnecessary drinks. And the bathroom have no lights! Never coming back here read more

So this used to my favorite place but last night sealed the deal for me. First off, I see so many available booths and the waitress was so stingy about giving me a booth.. I literally have been there once a week for the past month. She finally gives me a booth after I pointed out one of the unreserved empty booths. It was also cold so I wanted to sit somewhere a bit more cozy. So things started to fall apart when the waiter took our orders. I ordered something so simple: a tuna salad with soup. He even asked, before walking away, what was your order again? I mean it was me and one other person so I don't know why it's so hard to remember when my friend just ordered a simple burger and fries. Or- as a waiter- shouldn't he be writing it down??? No pen and paper- soooo unprofessional. Anyway, he repeated the items back to me so I assumed he got it under control. We are waiting for a long time and something finally comes out which was my small onion soup. I'm waiting for my friend's food and the soup gets really cold. Waiter comes around and asks if everything is ok. I say no and wonder where our food is. How long can a simple salad take? He apologizes and brings it over.. except it's a sandwich. He walks away very quickly and I stop him and say it's supposed to be a salad. He says, "oh, I thought you meant a tuna salad sandwich". He continues to tell me there's no such thing on the menu lol I laugh bc it's the only thing I ever order when I come here and he promises to go back to the kitchen and check. He comes back with the salad but no burger. We wait for quite some time for that burger to come out... isn't that food supposed to come out all together or at least not too much of a waiting gap in between? The burger finally comes out and the fries look limp and cold. Anyway, as I'm eating my food and talking with my friend... the waiter comes and picks up my soup and takes it back to the kitchen! He comes back and I say, "I wasn't finished with that" and he says, "Sorry, I thought you were; I was eyeing it this whole time."WELL INSTEAD OF EYEING IT WHY DONT YOU ASK ME??? He did bring back another one but the whole experience of incompetence has left such a poor taste in my mouth. Some other older female waitress brings the bill (how convenient) and I don't leave a tip. I guess I filled out my own copy and not the merchants but she picks up my copy and reads what I put and realizes I didn't leave a tip (doesn't even ask me If everything was ok) and snaps that I need to fill out the merchants. After I paid I leave and she gives me the dirtiest look. Sorry but I don't think I will ever go back and it sucks because its such a historic and nostalgic staple for me and so close to my place but I can't go back with this type of treatment. I will have to find a new place. read more

I wasn't going to write a review because I was asked not to (begged) not write about my experience but since I don't think I will ever be back here again I might as well. An old acquaintance took me here perhaps because the prices are pretty inexpensive considering what other restaurants charge and also I am assuming he took me here because of the history of the building and charm. I needed to use the restroom which was next door through the double doors across the lobby of the Gaylord apartments and on the floor I saw a roach in the restroom. So I thought, okay it is LA. Maybe it was a baby cricket. I walk back inside the restaurant, I asked if they have happy hour ( I was in the mood for bar food) they said no but had a deal on a shot of your choice & a tecate for $6 or $8. At that time around 3:30pm happy hour choices are limitless but being a guest I decided to chose something out the menu which has quite a selection. The music was pleasant, no complaints there. FOOD: I ordered wings and a cheeseburger. I asked the wings extra wet, it tasted like they mixed buffalo sauce with bbq sauce. Was this their special sauce or what? The burger was nothing special. When I cut it in half the sesame bread split into pieces. Either because the bun was dry old or because it was poor quality bread. I was told their fish and chips was good and it seemed so bc he devoured it all. I asked for a side of jalapeños and the vinegar tasted funny I didn't eat them for that reason. I was going to take my leftovers to go until I saw a ROACH crawling on the booth next to my shoulder. It is dim so you can't tell if this creatures are crawling everywhere. I joked with my company that he had a roach on his shirt and he jolted, I mean after that I kept looking over my shoulder. I told the waitress about it and all she said was sorry and shrugged. When I had asked for another beer to a staff member who walked up to the table and asked if everything was okay I ordered a beer but still wasn't brought to me. If the health department sees this I am afraid everyone would be asked out on this place. The waitress blamed the apartments for the roaches and I'm sure they blame the restaurant for it. Is it ordinary in LA to eat somewhere with roaches crawling trying to get on your food? It's not okay, right? Your call to eat here. Low quality food, cheap prices and creatures crawling. Regardless of this experience I left $10 tip because the person that chose this place wasn't happy with me leaving a $6 tip. The HMS Bounty is a breed of restaurant that is sadly going extinct. Communities need to cherish these places while they are still around. The restaurant has been there in some sort since 1921, I believe it was rebought and renamed sometime in the 50's-60's.Regardless, it feels like a piece of history and you definitely feel like you are home when you are at the bounty. If you are in Koreatown and looking for an affordable, quality American-style lunch/dinner-- look no further. This is THEE place for an economical, but quality steak dinner. THAT is what this place is all about. This is not a dive bar, this is not a steak house... This is a QUALITY restaurant for dinner and drinks. This is that perfect place for residents of the area that do not have big kitchens in their small Ktown apts-- this is the spot to come and just get a down-right, quality dinner for a very reasonable price. I would recommend this place for a date, or drinks with the boyz as well. Bottom line--Everything I get, my plate is absolutely cleaned when I return it. I usually stick to the steak menu: The famous baseball steak-- cant go wrong. When the Petit Felit mignon is on special-- take advantage. I usually get a Caesar side salad, and you can tell the Caesar is made in house. Also the French onion soup is on-point. Another banger on the menu-- The Steak Quesadilla-- it is a regulars' favorite and the salsa is top notch homemade. I've had a Decent Burger and Italian food as well. They also have daily specials that are unbeatable in the area for dinner. Try a Petite Felit Mignon dinner (on special) for something like $15-$20-- and it was absolutely incredible topped with grilled onions, potatoes and broccoli. They have an amazing drink deal: A can of beer and a shot of whiskey or Tequila for $6 (or something like that). Also, their cocktails are reasonably priced... You can get a Side Car or a Paloma for like $8 or $9-- absolutely unheard-of in the area. Lastly, the service is always great. no complaints. The employees are consistent, and do a good job of remembering you if you return. Just missing one star because furniture could use a little upgrade and 1 or 2 beers on tap wouldn't hurt. We came here because of an IG post. This was definitely a unique dining experience. When we got here I initially thought maybe we had the wrong address. The double entry doors were unusual and very narrow (I'd be surprised if this was ADA compliant). We weren't really sure if we were supposed to seat ourselves or wait and the host area was in a really inconvenient spot for trying to find someone who could provide the info of where to sit. Eventually, someone sat us and we looked over the menu, picked our food, and then waited. Food was quick to arrive. I got the filet which was a little overcooked. The "daily vegetables" was a head of steamed broccoli. It was good, just strange. Overall, the food was tasty, but interesting. The decor was eclectic... To get to the bathroom you have to go up two stairs and a doorway to the lobby of an apartment complex. The women's is on ground level, the men's is downstairs. I didn't see an elevator. A lot of servers are on hand and different people come out with the food and take away your plates after each course. So it was a lot of people coming and going. Some of the staff was great and super friendly but others were a bit standoffish so you couldn't tell their mood. Our main server was great though! Now for the food... The cornbread was divine and just met all of our expectations. The pork and green chili stew was amazing! The tortillas were so chewy and yet a little crispy. The stew was spicy but cheesy with tender pork. It was delicious. The mushroom crusted pork chop was super tender and it was unique. I have never had pork chop like it and it was great. It was oily and definitely regretted not getting a fresh veggie side. We got the mashed potatoes and the green beans. The mashed potatoes were creamy and buttery. It was great. The green beans were salty and wasn't my favorite. THE ALL-STAR! STICKY BREAD PUDDING! I can't even describe it... just make sure to order it. You will not regret it. We went on a pretty hot day over the weekend and it was warm inside. With the open fire in the dining area I suppose it makes it difficult for the restaurant to be cool.

There's definitely a great sense of hospitality here. A small group of us came here in a week night so we were able to get seated pretty much right away. Well, at least after a little time that we were able to spend at the bar. I started off with a martini. It was delicious as well. And the bar is really nice. When we got seated, we were seated out on the balcony, which I really enjoyed. It felt like I was really dining on one of those balconies in New Orleans. We ordered couple of skewers - beef kofta and maitake. We also got and a couple starters/sides - the whipped feta, vadouvan cauliflower, and sticky Japanese sweet potato. And for a main, we got the chicken schnitzel. Everything was well presented and full of flavor. I don't think I disliked any of the dishes. Maybe I'm easy to please but seriously everything was really good and well prepared. I wanna go back and try some more mains like the branzino. Just a wonderful dining experience overall. And if you're looking for a nice dinner that won't break the bank and has a great vibe, this is the spot.

I work within walking distance of the resturaunt/bar, and it has quickly become my go to lunch destination after deciding to try it around a month ago. I started off eating their French Dip, as this is one of my favorite entrees, and it was absolutely delicious. After ordering it for the second time in a row the bartender told me that I really ought to try their hamburgers, and was blown away. First of all I prefer my beef cooked at medium rare, which does not happen at most places when I order it. Typically it comes out over cooked. However, when I cut the burger in half I found the patty to be a beautiful pinkish/red all the way through. My favorite aspect of the bar has to be the people that work their. I am always treated as soon as i walk in the door by either the server or the woman that works behind the bar. They are incredbly attentive, but with that being said I have only been here during the lunch hour during the week. So i cannot comment on how the service is during their peak hours. read more

Dim lighting, plush chairs & wood. It feels like an older version of Maclaren's (from How I Met Your Mother). It's a place I come to for a nightcap after a date or simple girl's night out. I don't need to worry about whether my top is see-through enough, whether my skirt is tight enough, or my heels stripper-high enough. I come in my regular Joe clothes, grab a few drinks in good company, and relax. The best part of it all? If the ambience isn't enough, the prices are DIRT CHEAP. like staggering "IS THIS THE 21st CENTURY?!? OR HAVE I BEEN TRANSPORTED THROUGH TIME???" dirt cheap. My date and I got 5 drinks (2 cranberry vodka, 1 pineapple vodka, 1 whiskey, 1 long island) for $27. I'm very fond of The HMS Bounty. It's a nice, cozy little bar in the Gaylord Building on Wilshire smack in the middle of Koreatown. If you walk in and it seems familiar, it's probably because you've seen it in many films/shows set in an earlier time period. It's the restaurant where Peggy goes out on a date with a truck driver on Mad Men, for example. Dark and generally quiet, it's also a good choice for a first date or a place where you'd like to actually make conversation along with your drinks. The drinks are generally strong, and inexpensive, and the food isn't half bad either, although it's really not the main event. When you need to visit the restroom, you do have to walk through the Gaylord Building's lobby which can be a bit creepy if you've been overindulging in the drinks but otherwise the Bounty is a great place to hang out on a weekday evening. read more

The food has stayed consistently amazing all these years -- and I mean that in the best way possible. Every visit feels comforting, familiar, and always satisfying. Love this place! I've come here often with a group of friends from work and we always get a table. A couple of times we tried to hang by the bar but the locals are NOT friendly. Wow, I have rarely felt unwanted in a dive bar but they managed to do a great job. Fine, whatever. The servers don't care that we set up shop at a table and happily brought food and drinks to us for the evening. Most of us were drinking the beer and a shot special. I had the Monte Cristo which I am now slightly obsessed with. My co-worker always gets the fish and chips. Everyone else had either burgers or sandwiches and they looked good as well. read more

When I first dined at the Bounty I did not expect the food to be good. It looks so much like your basic bar and usually these kinds of places do not make good food. I was wrong. The food is very good. They make a great salmon plate. The onion rings are wonderful. They also do a very decent fish and chips. The food and drink prices are also reasonable. The interior is dark like a bar but the ambiance is wonderful. The entire restaurant interior has stained knotty pine wood paneling and red upholstered booths. Came in for lunch today on my day off and was happy to see a big lunch crowd. Had a great French dip, coleslaw, and onion rings. It wasn't anything fancy but I don't always want that anyway. The meat was great quality, nothing chewy and not fatty. The best part? They have a drink special of a Tecate and shot of whiskey or tequila for $5.50. The place is all about old Hollywood. Just blocks away from where the famous Ambassador Hotel, Coconut Grove and Brown Derby used to be. It's located on the fist floor of the historic Gaylord apartments in Wilshire Center. If you want to hear some stories about Los Angeles in the 1950's then pull up a seat at the bar, there will be plenty of old-timers waiting to give you a history lesson. I have now been here a few times, and I have to say I LOVE IT! This is pub is a classic. As you walk in the lights are dim, and it is almost as if you have stepped back in time. The decor is reminds you of an old mafia hangout, and makes me personally feel welcome and at home. The service is supurb, and the food is delicious and moderatly priced. I'd read about HMS Bounty as an old Los Angeles haunt for celebrities. The Ambassador Hotel used to be across the street and that probably added to the celebrity sitings at HMS Bounty. Some were such regulars that some of the booths have bronze plaques indicating whose table it was. It was a nice venue and the food was far less expensive than I expected. read more

The hot dog was one of those great snappy dogs that I adore. Pepper relish didn't do as much for me since it was definitely overpowered by the proper French Dijon mustard drizzled on top. Very honorable notice to their veggie sticks...genius large matchsticks of celery and cucumber marinated in a soy vinaigrette and then showered with Furikake. I'm gonna steal this for home use. Cornbread and honey butter is one I will not soon forget - having to mix the honey together with the butter is a great touch and made me appreciate the dish even more. Both the blackened shrimp skewers and the mushroom skewers were delicious, cooked perfectly and pleasantly hot and tender. Cajun fries were great too of course. My one note would be that the cocktail list is not super inventive -- I'd love to see more southern-style specialty drinks in addition to the regular margaritas, etc.
