Sometimes from reading reviews I'm not sure if I went to the same place as the people who wrote the reviews went to. This is currently my favorite Chinese buffet. I have been to a lot and the rest of them don't have as many choices and the choices you do get are stereotypes of Chinese take out. This place offers the typical Chinese buffet fair but they also have lots of seafood and they even serve duck. You can get crab legs that are okay. I would say stay away from the muscles but some people enjoy the taste of them. I found my favorite Chinese dish at this place, the salted whole shrimp with hot pepper (with shell on). There's only one other Chinese place in the neighborhood that serves that and they charge over $10 for just that dish. They also have sushi, though you might want to only get the vegetable ones. They have a sushi chief there and I guess you can ask him for something if he's there. I usually just take a cucumber roll or something. I make better sushi at home but it's still fine. Stay away from the American food (pizza, etc.), there's a reason you don't get American food at a Chinese buffet. In terms of desert, they have soft serve ice cream (tastes like soft serve), donuts (I like them), fruit, jello, pudding, this bean paste filled pastry, and a few other thing. Since I eat a lot of "ethnic food," I've acquired a taste for things like red bean paste. Drinks are from a fountain and you can get as much as you want. Also, they do offer take-out. You pay for a certain "weight" of food, like a 1/2 pound. I think they just really give you a certain container for the price you pay and then you go into the buffets and stuff the container. Stopped in a few weeks ago with friends to fill that "I want a taste of everything Chinese" craving. I can honestly say this place is gross! The floors are filthy, the bathrooms are disgusting, and the workers are less than friendly. As far as the food... the food here is terrible. First of all, shame on the owner of this restaurant for not sprucing it up a bit. It is dingy, dusty and faded and in dire need of at least a good cleaning. The overall presentation and tattered around the edges appearance can easily lead someone to believe the food will be equally mishandled, sloppy and inedible. In other words, Hong Kong Buffet ... Clean up your act! The food is average at best and unappetizing on some level as well. This place is pretty disgusting... I swear they were semi-decent years ago and maybe on a Sunday. I am not a fan of Chinese buffets but decided to give it another try because it was close by and would be a quick dinner. What a big mistake!! I will never come back here again. The food is really greasy... the extra ladle of oil just makes the food look pretty and shine but isn't so great on your stomach. Everything about the place is dirty; the floors, chairs, and tables are sticky. The plates are never clean enough. Our steamed fish was raw on the inside.. and it wasn't sashimi. This was by far the saddest buffet I have ever been to. By the end of my meal, I was trying to figure out who was trying to commit suicide via buffet. So the food was old when we got there at 6:15pm. Not the middle of dinner rush, but still the hard boiled egg's had dry yolks from sitting out. The food was a little stale too, I LOVE sesame balls with red bean in the center, but theirs had been out so long the bottoms were so hard as to be inedible. The beef and broccoli had little flavor and the broccoli was a step away from mush. The only thing I would eat again would be the egg rolls. My boyfriend said he was taking me somewhere nice for dinner one night. I put my best outfit on and was ready for a surprise, because he usually picks really great places to go downtown...and surprised I was when we pulled into the parking lot of Hong Kong Buffet (and not in a good way). I tried to give this place a chance, I really did; but then I saw that they had crawfish placed next to jell-o and was completely disgusted. The food was cold, the floor was really slippery; the one dish I thought would be safe (rice) turned out to be one big heap of rice just stuck together and mixed with particles of neighboring dishes. I wish I could give this place zero stars. It was positively disgusting. The restaurant was filthy, and it was hands-down the worst Chinese food I've ever had in my life. I should've known better when we walked in and discovered that, before we were even allowed to look at the buffet, we were required to fork over our cash. Which, by the way, was $10.99 a person for lunch instead of the $6.99 a person that the sign advertised. Yes, it was a Saturday, but the sign made no mention of special pricing for weekends. Then, we rounded the corner and I saw what we were in for. I was immediately pissed. The place was dirty...really, really dirty. The floors were gray, the tables were sticky and the buffet stations probably hadn't seen a wet rag in six months. There were half-eaten plates of food everywhere, including on the cart that housed the clean silverware. Even though we arrived 15 minutes after they opened, the food on the buffet was cold. Not that there was much; two-thirds of the pans were scraped clean or missing completely. My first plate of food was a gelatinous, oversalted, inedible mess. The broccoli chicken was particularly bad; the sauce was slimy, thick and dark and the broccoli was bitter and overcooked. The sauteed asparagus was greasy and gritty, as if there was sand or dirt in the sauce. When I returned to the buffet, the number of items had increased but the quality of the food hadn't improved. Things that proved to be not good, but edible, on the buffet are as follows: the chicken wings (frozen, pre-breaded, and fried), the french fries (again, frozen and fried), the lo mein and the sushi (pretty much the same as what you'd find at a grocery store deli; not fresh or particularly good, but it won't kill you). I wouldn't normally eat chicken wings or french fries at a Chinese restaurant, but I was desperate to find something that I could choke down so that I could at least get some of my money's worth. My boyfriend and I walked home, mad that we'd wasted more than $20. Now we both feel icky and sick, and have that really awful heartburn that comes from eating something that may or may not have been poisonous. Do not eat at Hong Kong Buffet. It is the worst Chinese restaurant I've ever been to in my entire life, and I don't know how any other restaurant could be bad enough to steal that title away from this place. read more

There are only a few times in life where I've regretted the choices I've made, this is one of those times. This Chinese buffet has absolutely the worse Chinese buffet I've been too. And being quarter Chinese, I love Chinese food. The food was semi warm at best, the sushi has been sitting out there more than a few hours. The only thing hot was the cold fruit. Some of the food was over salted. The rest of the food was a combination of too much salt and oil. It took me a few minutes to figure out were the forks and spoons where located. This place was an absolute mess. The guy at front counter tried to sell me some of the toys they had sitting out on display. I noticed him stairing down my sister who is 17. Like if she were about to steal one of their knock off toys. He did the same to me when I went to closely inspect a knock off Steve McQueen toy. I found the starting to be a bit rude. Although the other staff members seemed to very helpful and nice. The building on the outside was a mess, beer bottles and trash everywhere. The inside was a little better, but you exchange the beer bottles and trash for a greasy atmosphere. When walking around the buffet area, I found the floors to be sticky. Some of the serving spoons were extremely greasy. A lot of the food looked like it had been sitting for more than half the day. The drinks were nasty. It tasted like they havnt cleaned the soda lines in a while. The table we sat at was the same story, greasy tops. Chairs where ok. When I decided to sit at a booth after the dislike of the table being greasy. I knew I made a mistake and went back to the table. The booth had a greasy table, the booth chairs were not secured. I literally took the chair with me when I tried to slide out. There were also a lack of napkins in the dispenser. Overall this place has super salty and oily food, the service needs work and the out side and inside appearance needs a lot of cleanning up. Although the price is cheap,I would try to avoid this place. Spend a few more dollars to go to a better buffet. Despite the current 2 star status Hong Kong has, my pregnant self was really needing some Chinese. But not just any Chinese, I needed a buffet. I went at 1:30 on a weekday and the crowd was pretty thin. Oh well, less lines! as for the food, some was a little Luke warm, but overall it was the same as any Chinese buffet. There is nothing good about this place. If you want Chinese food, go to Chinatown. It's worth the trip. Not only is the food inedible, the owner is one of the rudest people I have met, and I have met a few. The owner does not have any civility in his blood. He did not even pretend or try to be nice. I totally agree with the review from Annette B. The conversation her brother overhead is consistent with my recent experience. There was a good flow of people coming in though, but even then you could tell that some of the food wasn't fresh. The "busgirls" were nice and attentive. There is a lot of free parking in the plaza lot. Unfortunately, those are the only POSITIVE things I have to say. By far the absolute dirtiest most disgusting Chinese buffet I have ever been to. I ate rice and watermelon, it was quite literally the only things I trusted. I came in around 8 pm. Two more hours of being open with about 10-12 people inside. Level with the influx of people only the rice and clams were refilled. Everything was cold and sitting for a long while. I went here once with my family after shopping at the stores nearby. We were there for the $7 lunch and liked that we got a lot of food for the price. The quality of the food was what you'd expect for a cheap "Chinese" buffet. The food was varied, strange, and overcooked. Some of it was good, some of it wasn't. I'm vegan so I had the vegetable sushi: more rice than anything else...vegetables are cheap, why was there so little vegetable! The fried rice was okay, the glass noodles were icky, the bok choy was overcooked but it was still nice to have a vegetable. There was no tofu though, strange. The button mushrooms were good once I wiped off the brown sauce. Realistically, a lot of the food matched the quality of a fast food Chinese place; I think I got a decent value. My husband is vegetarian. He liked the cheese rangoon and the pizza was okay (what would you expect?). The soft-serve ice cream was really watery. My parents liked the food, but then again, they like junky food. My husband and I didn't find the cleanliness to be objectionable. The place was fine to us so maybe things were different on the days that the other yelpers went. Also, the fountain drinks were included. In addition, for the person who said he had to pay before looking at the food, I was able to bypass the front desk and walk right in to survey the buffet and no one seemed to notice me. As a vegan, I always check out the food before paying, to make sure there's something I can eat. If I were really hungry and was feeling lazy, my husband and I would definitely come back. This place has a new owner Everytime I drive past haha. Honestly just subpar, food is okay not appetizing sushi is just kimbap basically. Some of the dishes are extra salty. Really not a fan of this location. Can't see how or why its been open so long. Maybe price wise it's okay. Definite language barrier issues when it comes to servers. I've recently went to Hong Kong buffet with some of my family for the Dinner Buffet. We were a table of 3. We got to pick out our own tables which is cool, because some buffet places will seat you somewhere themselves. We paid about 12$ per person. Pros: -Food quality is good -They bring new batches of food in timely manner -Good lighting -Workers did not stare at us or give us suspicious looks like other buffet places -Parking available -Drinks included in price -Sparkling water and coffee also available -Host says goodbye to you when you are leaving Cons: -Not many dessert options -Only 2 types of ice cream, and from an ice cream machine (tastes kind of like ice water) -I had to pick up many spoons before finding one with no stains.. I think its mostly water stains however. I may be picky about this so pardon me. Other: -No hibachi grill -It's not the most beautiful place but it is not too bad either -You can hear workers yelling or speaking loudly with each other. It did not bother me at all but I heard someone at another table mention it. I had a better experience here than other Chinese Food Buffet places. I used to go to CHang Jiangs in Mount Prospect.. and they have gotten shut down. I also used to go to Yummy Buffet but I have had bad experiences there with workers staring constantly and making comments. I have had a good experience with Hong Kong buffet so far. This restaurant looks really awesome from the outside -- like a Chinese buffet from dreamland. But be warned! It is like an asp lying in wait -- an asp disguised as something more pleasant, like an Easter rabbit -- but an asp still as deadly as a normal asp. The spread looks impressive. My dining companion remarked that there were a lot of funny stuff on the buffet that he would never even eat -- stuff like little squids and funny-looking fish. Sadly the food is mostly under temperature. If you like projectile vomiting, this is your place to eat. There are also all these funny signs hanging around -- stuff like: Don't waste the sushi or you'll be charged 5.99 take-out fee. Don't let your kids run in the buffet area, we are not responsible if they get injured. Take only what you'll eat. Sorry, but if you're serving lukewarm crap for dinner, you can't tell me I have to eat it. Also this buffet is way overpriced, but authentic. To paraphrase my friend, the authenticity lies in the fact that if you were a low wage worker in China, this is probably what you'd eat every day because it would be low cost. But ten bucks for this? Really? You can spend half that and get a far more satisfying meal at say, Tsang on Touhy. Anyway, the only reason this gets one star is because the crab rangoon and the crab cakes were good. That was it. Don't forget to factor in the cost of the stomach surgery you'll need to repair all the horrible damage that this lukewarm food will do to your digestive system. read more

I know it's not the top choices for a buffet, Chinese at that. As a buffet, it was ok. But compared to restaurants, not so ok. Things I liked: beef w/ broccoli, chicken w/ broccoli, sweet and sour chicken, vegetable fries rice and most desserts. The broccoli was fresh with a crunch. The fried rice was a little oily but I can tell was freshly cooked. The place is priced accordingly. We were there for a small party and the cashier (owner?) was getting loud and practically screaming at us because they were not organized in taking in our guests who were already paid. He was getting confused and took it out on us. Very uncalled for behavior which should embarass him more than us! The waitress and waitor were the ones calming everyone down. DANGER! STAY AWAY! Every single hot dish I tried was room temperature, except these which were just brought out. The cold food items were room temperature as well, the exceptions being those on melting shaves i e. Clearly this place thinks nothing of violating city, county and state health codes, nor does the owner, when noticed of the problem, speak to what they will do to correct it. I do not believe there is a single food thermometer in the entire establishment. I was VERY ILL soon afterwards, and my breakfast was toast and coffee, so I know it wasn't my own at-home meal that sickened me. So, I am filing formal complaints with each agency at every level if government that regulates the industry, and leading an online media attempt to showcase this place and its owners as a menace to public health! read more

The nice thing about this place is the parking lot. I got dehydrated and almost panicked there. I called and asked for some water. "We don't have styrofoam cups is what I was told. I said I would buy a meal if they could bring me some water or get the soda I had out my trunk. Again No, "I can call an ambulance for you" was the response I received. In light of the real emergencies in our city, it would've have been nice not to bother them for some water. Fortunately a strong wind came through my car several times and cooled me off enough to get to Lou Malnatis where I was given a place to sit and water. read more

This is one of the worst eating experiences I've ever had... This place is FILTHY. I couldn't even finish my food, really I should never have started. We didn't notice how dirty it was until we walked up to get the food, but by then we had already paid :-/ the floors were covered with food and sticky from soda but not just near the food area. The vacant tables didn't seem to have been cleaned all day. The hot sauce lids were so crusty it looked like several years worth of rust. It was just disgusting. I have no idea why anyone should be leaving 1-star review of this place, but I suspect it's because they were trying to eat the pizza or chicken nuggets at this cheap and cheerful Chinese buffet. If you ate the actual Chinese food, you'd find it hot and flavorful, replenished frequently, and generally an excellent value. They usually have a really nice vegetarian mushroom dish and excellent steamed dumplings with pork. Get the steamed (not fried) rice and start with those and some of the seafood, if that's your thing. Many of the ethnic Chinese I see in this place come primarily for the seafood, in fact -- not a bad thing to make a note of as you make your selections. Of course, if you want the hottest, freshest food at a buffet, you don't show up an hour before the restaurant closes. You also don't come in the middle of the afternoon when the restaurant is nearly empty. Also note that this is generally not a place where the server gets and refills your drinks - some servers are more entrepreneurial than others on that count, but you just don't expect it. The cups are set next to the fountain drinks for a reason. I've never sat at a sticky table here. (The floors, sometimes, could do with a but more attention, but they do try to keep on top of it.) The bathrooms could certainly use some work, unfortunately, but overall I don't have any major qualms. If you do have a concern, the owner/manager sits right up front, all day, and he is very friendly. read more

I was so hungry on a Sunday afternoon and I popped in I got shrimp,fried rice,I wanna say chow mein but it was thicker than that and it was a glossy brown.I also got plantains,and ice cream as a dessert I totally recommend because this food was so bomb and filling so I wasn't hungry until 9:45 pm But something I don't like is that I couldn't take it to go they also had ice cream for the kids chocolate and vanilla also a convenient coffee machine and a soda machine.I will definitely be coming back to The Hong Kong Buffet. read more

Hong Kong Buffet was very disappointing as the place was very dirty and I had to keep switching plates until I found a clean one. When I sat down I was not brought silverware and had to hunt around to find some. On the food side, shumai I ate was not evenly heated and the sushi fell to bits the second I picked it up with my chopsticks. The chicken wings were good and the fried rice, but I didn't find this place to be anything special. Money could be better spent at Old Country Buffet, and that's really saying something. My issues are the staff is indifferent at best but better than outright rude. The place seems a little shabby but I ignore it since I am not there to eat the seating.
