    $1.25 Hong Kong Egg Waffle
    Gabrielle P.

Hong Kong Egg Waffles, or Hot Mini Cakes, as they are so called, are a staple of my childhood. I remember getting them almost everyday for $1.00(20 pieces) after Chinese school from an old man or old lady behind the cart. Due to rising costs, the egg waffles are now $1.25(15 pieces). I tried them again yesterday and the texture was so different compared to that of the egg waffles back then. In the past, the texture was moist and chewy like a cake. Now it's like rubbery. :/ The warm, eggy taste was definitely still there, though. I think this business is family-owned; it's probably being run by a new generation, so either the recipe has probably been tweaked a bit, or my timing was just bad.

Oh my god.. how I love this cart.. I have been going to this seller for years..well since I was a kid, and to see him still up and about is quite nice. I will definitely be really sad when I don't see him around. I am not sure if he ever had a student, so I don't know what would happened if he gets too old for doing this type of selling. So I always make it a point to walk by this place as infrequent as I go to this location in Chinatown. Why do I love this place? Because I grew up with mini-cakes at 20 for a $1.. I really refuse to purchase at 15 a $1, from all those other tourist hungry sellers on Canal. Because no matter how many other people would say how mini-cakes taste the same everywhere, for me.. these mini-cakes always has an orange scented taste to it. Because it is a really nice treat for even people who are diabetic, or worried about how sweet a cake can be.. these are really really not. Because it is always great to see that the seller recognizes you.. it makes for a good random conversation. One thing, based on years of observing the seller's make these cakes. One of the minicakes is never really formed, with the practice hand of many many years.. the seller's tools has characteristics that long time customers should notice... Oh also if you want even sweeter treats, there is the creak cakes that Quickly sells across the way.. nah... I'll take these over that.. any time, any place, anywhere...

Oh little mini hot cakes! How I think you're so cute and fluffy! Yes I do! Yes I do!! ::plays with mini cake then throws it down the hatch:: Alright...which one of you are next?!

The one and only place where I get my mini cakes nowadays. I tried them all in Chinatown and every place seems to fail miserably. I grew up with the mini cakes that this man made ever since I was a child and it tasted the same ever since. His mini cakes are soft and fluffy and fresh. Unlike the others that are on Canal St and other random spots, they lack texture and taste. Other places would make them too dry or too bland. Plus, this man still has $1 for 20 pieces. All the other places sell them for $1 for 15 pieces - rip off! So, if you're ever in Chinatown, don't be lazy. Walk that extra couple of blocks from Canal St and buy the mini cakes from this man.

4 stars because I LOVE street vendors, because the older gentleman is so nice... It's supposed to be eggette but what he produces it's indeed a bit cakey and they are smaller in size. 20/$1 is dirt cheap and truly a great snack to hold you over.

Keeping it classy on the train ride home with my mini cakes.

My most recent trip to the "Little Cakes Man" (as I like to call him) went something like this... Friend at the wheel is turning onto Grand. Other friend and I spot Little Cakes Man. We totally weren't thinking about it, caught off guard. "STOP!" we scream. Our driver doesn't get scared (shocking for her, really) and easily pulls aside for us. We bounce out of the car and wait on line for our little cakes. We approach the front of the cart. The man looks up. "This is not your first time. I've seen you before," he says to us. That's right, Little Cakes Man. We have been to your wonderful stand of pleasant little cakes before. Faithfully, we purchase four $1 bags (one for each person in the car), thank him and go on our way. Don't worry, we will be back. In the car, we sample our joy and encouraged our other two friends, who had never been to the Little Cakes Man before, to do the same.. Just tiny light bits of baked batter. So simple. So good. So cheap. Whoever said money can't buy you happiness didn't have $1 and know about the Little Cakes Man.

Simple, quick, easy Chinatown staple. Apparently this cart has stood in the exact same corner location for about 25 years, because my fiance has reminisced about frolicking around the less-than-savory Chinatown of the 80's while popping hot mini cakes into his mouth. And he knew exactly where to find it when I suggested we give it a try together 20 years later. Apparently, they use the same waxy-paper bags with some kind of red Chinese logo and drawing printed on, because my fiance's brothers instantly knew what it was when I shared my photo with them. Apparently, inflation hasn't affected the hot mini cakes industry, because they still charge the exact same $1 price for 20 cakes that they did 25 years ago. And apparently, they are delicious, because I inhaled my little bag of perfectly-toasted hot mini cakes in less time than it took for the cart-man to precisely count them out. What a lovely little piece of NYC. This is really one of of those tiny details that makes it like no other place on Earth.

The orange has a base made of chocolate Rice Krispies. All of them have more fruity filling than the mousse. They are very fragile. I recommend eating there if you can. Finding can be a challenge because it's busy and there aren't many seats. I got mine to go just to be taken to the park across the street . The mushroom kind are totally ruined. It has strawberriy jelly and it was a mess. The orange one was almost ruined too. The mango has some diced mangoes. I devoured three of them instantly. Definitely come back to try more.

There was no place to sit down because of how busy it was but the staff kept the line moving quick enough. The place still seemed reasonably stocked with their desserts and treats, despite the late afternoon time that I arrived. I ordered 4 different treats to go and they're packed in small box individually. Unfortunately, they didn't quite stay intact during my trek back to my hotel and were tumbled around in the boxes. Nonetheless, the taste and flavors held up well and even after a few days in the fridge. The yuzu daisy has this vivid pastel yellow-pink base and adorable gelatinous yellow gem atop a white flower. The yuzu gives a subtle infusion of tart that is balanced out by the light delicate skin texture of the rest. Sitting atop a thin round rice crispy. I loved the red mushroom one which is a creamy pink mousse inside the cap. The stalk is a thin porcelain-white chocolate light base also filled with a rich cream. Adjacent are two cute little tree nuts. The orange and mango have such vivid colors and are aesthetically pleasing too. Just like the previous ones, their delicate chocolate exterior houses a rich tarty mousse-y filling. I think the mushroom has a better balance and variety of flavors. Although I don't eat mousse treats often, I look forward to trying some of the other ones in the future, like the blueberry, banana and cloud.

This used to be my favorite Italian bakery. I haven't been to this bakery in years like ten years…read moresince I was a teenager. Today I decided to make a special trip to go here to grab a few goodies. I forgot how small the place was and how low the ceilings were. That wasn't an issue though. The place was nice and cakes were stacked neatly. What was surprising to me is that they don't have any cookies laid in the front display. It's all placed in the back almost hidden. I was deeply disappointed with their cookie selection. It was deeply surprising that they don't sell the butter cookies that had jam in the middle and dipped with chocolate on one side with sprinkles. I did ask the clerk and even showed him a pic of what I was looking for and he said they never sold them. They only had the linzer cookies and they didn't look so good. They also did not have the lobster tail. They did have the sfogliatelle which they also called a lobster tail. I thought they were not the same? Some bakeries sell both and they are definitely not the same. I did end up buying one of their sfogliatelle with cream and some rugelachs. The sfogliatelle was good but the rugelachs tasted slightly underbaked. It did taste fresh though unlike many I've had in other bakeries. However, for $28 per pound, I wouldn't get it again. For those not having lobster tail and not having the Italian cookies, I will have to give Veniero's a low rating. I never thought an Italian bakery would not carry staples. Very disappointed. I need to find another Italian bakery now.
