With all the rain we had this past week I wanted something warm and comforting. We ended up at this Taiwanese spot. They have multiple variations of porridges to choose from. You can add other proteins or vegetables to enhance your porridge as you like. We ordered the pork porridge and the Shrimp & Dried Scallop porridge. We added 1000 yr egg to both because we LOVE it. The two dishes fed 3 of us and we even took some home. We added an order of scallion pancakes for our appetizer. They fried it perfectly. It was warm and crispy on the outside and had a good chew in the middle. They also brought starters (like banchan at Korean places) but with a Taiwanese twist. Very authentic congee. We tried the beef congee and a shrimp congee with crab add-on. The base is very flavorful and the meats were fresh and tender. It definitely feels like the chefs put a lot of work into making the congee broth. The only downside is that the rice in the congee isn't broken into the broth like traditional Chao Shan congee - it feels like the rice and the congee broth are separated. The bean curd cold dish is different from how it looks in the menu, and they were honest about it and let you know that before you order. My friend wanted to try this place out so we decided to give it a try. Tucked in a very busy street on Valley Blvd lies Huo Zhou Wang. Can be very easily missed as the sign is in Chinese but it's located near the back of the plaza. Was pleasantly surprised by the interior of this place. There aren't many reviews online so I was skeptical at first, but it definitely exceeded those expectations. This place is very unique, in that you choose what seafood you'd like and they cook it for you and place it in your porridge of choice. Because of this, beware there is a huge waiting time as they cook things fresh. I'm not a huge seafood person but we decided to get the following: 1) Beef Porridge with Vegetables: 6/10 Just tasted like what I expected it to be. Nothing special and honestly, I probably can make this myself. 2) Dried Scallop Porridge with Shrimp, frog, and scallop: 8/10 Definitely loved the taste of this porridge. The scallop and shrimp really added lots of flavor to the pot and I enjoyed it more than I had expected. Not really a huge fan of the frog but that was something new to experience. Revisited and I firmly believe this is the best porridge you can get in the 626 area. Is it expensive? Yes. Is it good? Very much so. The restaurant is always empty probably because the reviews are so bad on yelp and not many Americans regularly eat porridge. This time I the shrimp, scallop, and clam porridge and added beef, pork ribs, preserved egg, and veggies to the porridge. The porridge prices are per serving and the waitress encourages you to share a large pot with 2 servings of porridge instead of each person getting an individual pot due to long wait times for food preparation....which is weird because the restaurant is mostly empty. I do see a ton of phone orders being taken so I guess majority of their business comes from takeout orders. In the end, every dish we ordered was delicious, the porridge was amazingly good, the seafood they use is live and not frozen. Huo Zhou Wang (HZW) is known for their Hong Kong-style porridge. I've heard different ways to say porridge, whether that is congee or jook, it all means the same thing, the classic rice porridge. We came on a Saturday afternoon for lunch and the place was empty. However, it was not too long after that the place became full of adolescents and families ordering the variety of porridge HZW offers. What's cool is that the place is quite homey, beautifully designed, and located in the same plaza as the Hilton hotel, so there are a lot of competitors in the area. I actually appreciated the aesthetics of the place and thought the bamboo menu was quite a nice touch. Like other yelpers have expressed, the menu is a bit confusing and the wait team didn't provide the clearest of answers to our questions. In any case, we ordered two congees in a hot pot, the chicken and the pork and the clear winner for me was the pork. The chicken lacked flavor compared to the pork, however, the hot pot really brought a nice touch of flavors to both the dishes. Do note that the consensus on yelp is that the place is a bit overpriced (but pretty comparable to other restaurants outside the San Gabriel Valley) and the wait for the food can be a bit long, but that's one of the requirements if you have ever ordered hot pot. But if you don't mind the prices or the wait that is required for a hot pot, then I would recommend this place because the food is actually not bad, it is a-okay. Fresh and good-quality. Can you imagine getting charged $230 for 3 ppl just with congee and two appetizers? The waiter steered us into ordering much more expensive options without telling us about the price. We added one medium sized crab (if not small) and that crab alone they ended up charging us $90 because it's "market price". The waiter also asked us to order the seafood congee which is $25, per person (beware of this when you order), instead of the $15 per person option we were trying to get. When we saw the bill we were all shocked... I'd say the main thing is probably the astronomical price they tried to charge for the crab. It's a scam. We had three orders of the same porridge, but thought it'll come out separately. But instead, the three orders came as one pot. Just interested in congee this time, and specifically was looking for mollusk seafood, which the other popular SG congee place doesn't cover. Decided to try delivery via ChowBus. Ordered the abalone and scallop congee (x2), scallion pancakes and the fried mini done (donut.) The congee was $25, but included a whole abalone in shell, along with a good 4oz extra of abalone pieces, plus 2 oz. of dried small scallops. This is about a 16-20oz bowl per serving. Great flavor and excellent thick texture, but missing something. The bonus was actually the donuts (aka fried buns, or 银丝卷) - they are EXCELLENT! Crispy outside crust like an old fashioned, inside is fluffy white angel toast with a center of golden egg yolk dough. We took ours and dusted them with cinnamon and sugar and made them disappear. (the condensed milk is more traditional, but hey, we have the ingredients.) Anyway, that's the excellence of their preparations (the pancake was oily though, but good flavor and layering.) Because of the extended production time in the kitchen, this delays pickup of orders from here quite a bit - ours took 2 hours from order receipt from ChowBus after HZW received the order. But it's congee, so it can hold. Cannot imagine what happens to items that suffer from long delays to delivery, so be careful with the other fried foods. read more

The small congee is tiny and only fills about 3 rice bowls. You can then order some other kitchen dishes like veggies. We chose a small congee with a shrimp and clam base. Abalone and and sea cucumber topping. $50. The congee was "good" but the value was "terrible". And to add to the "rip off" was the side of pea spouts we ordered $11 was a third of the normal veggie dish size. Drinks were served in cheap plastic cups.
