Pretty h.

Really enjoyed the seafood porridge here. The ingredients were fresh, and the crab actually had roe, which made the porridge extra flavorful. The side dishes were good too. Would definitely come back.

Porridge
Lina C.

The best fresh seafood made to order porridge!!! Love getting the lamb porridge with geoduck, abalone, and sea cucumber. After a tiring long roadtrip this is the most comforting food! They clean the seafood thoroughly and the porridge is made to order. So takes a little time to get the food but so very worthy it! While waiting we get a choy veggie. The you tiao is also yummy as appetizers. Service: quick to take order. Ambiance: they got a glow up and their menus is now a nice pamphlet. Cozy small place with modern look and feel.

Scallion pancake

With all the rain we had this past week I wanted something warm and comforting. We ended up at this Taiwanese spot. They have multiple variations of porridges to choose from. You can add other proteins or vegetables to enhance your porridge as you like. We ordered the pork porridge and the Shrimp & Dried Scallop porridge. We added 1000 yr egg to both because we LOVE it. The two dishes fed 3 of us and we even took some home. We added an order of scallion pancakes for our appetizer. They fried it perfectly. It was warm and crispy on the outside and had a good chew in the middle. They also brought starters (like banchan at Korean places) but with a Taiwanese twist. The Kim chee and the pickled radish were more than the Korean version. Parking is terrible here, go downstairs and park near the elevator. It's a short walk to the right when you exit the doors. DEFINITELY coming here again!

Super bad porridge, all you taste is msg.

It has the worst porridge in the world. The waiter is mean and kept saying we should do both kitchen mushrooms and the beef porridge in one pot, so unprofessional. This place doesn't know how to cook at all.

Feng W.

One of the best porridge in town and right now the best winter comfort food! Their porridge is top tier and tasty! Loved their mushroom porridge and shrimp with alcohol! Their seafood quality is great and you can taste it.

Beef congee
Suchen Z.

Very authentic congee. We tried the beef congee and a shrimp congee with crab add-on. The base is very flavorful and the meats were fresh and tender. It definitely feels like the chefs put a lot of work into making the congee broth. The only downside is that the rice in the congee isn't broken into the broth like traditional Chao Shan congee - it feels like the rice and the congee broth are separated. But it wasn't a dealbreaker for me. In hindsight, the shrimp congee probably would've been delicious on its own without the $90 crab add on though

Really comforting Cantonese clay pot congee in San Gabriel! The seafood was very fresh and the congee had a nice thick, rich texture that made it super satisfying. The small dishes on the side were also great and paired really well with the congee. Overall a cozy, simple spot I'd definitely come back to again

Chicken and Shiitake mushrooms base, with shrimp (small) and dried scallop (large)

Delicious congee with great selection of bases and add-ins. The staff is nice and can speak English and Chinese. The restaurant is clean and has a minimillistic ambiance. The congee is served in medium sized stone pots which are very interesting and give an authentic unique feel to the dining experience. Also, the side dishes they give are delicious! (salted peanuts, kimchi of cabbage and daikon)

Angela Z.

Service was quick, food is okay not top quality but not bad. I love congee tho, so opinion may be biased. Standard nice meal if you're craving congee

Karen F.

We were craving some non-Canto congee and ended up here, which reminded me of the congee I used to have in China. They have a selection of non congee items and then you select what you want to go into your congee. After selecting, they cook it up in a clay pot and it stays pretty piping hot. The ambiance is your classic mediocre chinese, but service is a notch above with them refilling water and not surly.

Li Z.

A pretty solid institution overall! Not exactly sure why there are so many negative reviews. the congee was very tasty (I got the pork rib, congee with clams and razor clams added), did not contain much MSG, which I'm usually pretty sensitive to. not over salted, was great, warming, and healthful meal to have especially when I was recovering from being sick. The only drawback that I have is that the conjuring was a little watery from my standpoint, would've liked 25 to 30% more rice. However, this may purely be stylistic. I didn't get the fresh seafood added, but would definitely bring my parents here next time to try it out. A solid institution and I would definitely come back!

Connie K.

We wanted to try this place out for a while. The congee is not good as expected. Service is not bad, the waitress keeps refilling the water for us. We probably won't be return.

10/10 Chicken Porridge Good for the stomach No Debate
Zenan Z.

10/10 Beneficial for stomach:))) Chicken porridge is a comforting, nutritious dish that's perfect for any meal. Packed with tender chicken pieces and soft, cooked rice, it's easy on the stomach, making it a great option for recovery or a light, satisfying meal. The porridge is gently simmered with flavorful broth, resulting in a smooth, hearty texture that warms you from the inside out. Often garnished with fresh herbs, fried shallots, and a dash of soy sauce, this 10/10 dish is both simple and delicious, offering the perfect balance of flavor and nourishment without overwhelming the senses.

We ended up getting a set for $168 this time, which came with 6 dishes. It's also $35 per lb for lobster, and I asked for the smallest one. Apparently, the smallest one was 4.8 lbs, which was another $168, so I'm not sure if they upsold me. Anyways, the food was fantastic and everyone enjoyed it. This is what I thought about the food we got. House Seafood Soup - Simple and clean soup. Good portion, and it was soothing to eat. Lots of squid. (4/5) Clams with Spicy Sauce - Large clams with tons of meat, and the sauce was fire. Always a good choice. (5/5) Crab with Salt & Pepper - Loved the seasoning, and the flavors were solid. (4.5/5) Thai Style Beef Stew - First time trying this, and it was good. A bit different, but the meat chunks were tasty and the overall flavors were good. (4/5) Sautéed Pea Sprouts - Nicely done vegetable dish. It's simple but refreshing with good flavors. (4/5) Fried Whole Fish - This dish was gone so fast because it was delicious. Nicely fried and not overly seasoned. (5/5) Signature Lobster - I feel like you have to get this here since it's their specialty. It's pricey, but in my opinion, it's the best and freshest lobster in town. Tons of green onions, seasoned well, fresh meat, and lots of lobster roe. (5/5) Service was good, and they didn't automatically add a mandatory tip for a large party. The total came out to around $364, which is pricey, but the food was phenomenal. Parking - Valet only, but they have street parking in front. I parked on the street since there were plenty of spots on a Wednesday, but I assume it gets busy on weekends.

It's pretty close by but also the quality of food is pretty good for how inexpensive the lunch specials are. You have to pay for the drinks, but so far I haven't seem a limit on the refill (I typically refill only once though but I've also been able to take the drink togo). I would recommend getting the salt and pepper pork chop - my dad says this is literally better than most places we've gone to. I think they season the batter, which is how its so flavorful. We also typically get the eggplant, which comes in a huge plate and comes with rice. My dad likes their curry but I'm not super excited about it. Its good, but not exciting, if you know what I mean. Service is typically pretty good. They move around pretty quickly and food typically comes out pretty quickly too. I would spend about 50-60 dollars and its enough food to last two people maybe an additional 2 or 3 meals, especially since most dishes come with a dish of white rice. The rice isn't great, like it's kind of dry, but its free so no complaints here.

The last few times I've ordered the kung pao chicken, it barely had any veggies. It used to come with a mix of colorful bell peppers, but now it's mostly onions. The sweet and sour fish used to be lightly battered and nice and meaty. On my last visit, it was heavily battered and you could barely taste the fish. I'm not sure if they changed chefs, but the difference in quality is definitely noticeable. It's disappointing because I really like the staff. They're always friendly and provide great service. I'm hoping the food goes back to how it used to be.

I'm sure you can find something for yourself or order a couple of items if you're going with one other person or a small group as well. Made a reservation for a group of friends that meet up for a meal from time to time and this restaurant is perfect for that dynamic. When we got there, I checked and and we were seated right away. It's not often I get to go to these full service banquet style Asian (mostly Chinese) restaurants but I miss going to them as a kid with my family. The service from the folks who sat us and the ladies taking our order was great from the beginning. So friendly! For myself, I got some milk tea to wash down all the delicious food we ordered. Although we didn't do any of the specials that required ordering a day or two in advance (the braised morel and chicken soup or the winter melon soup), I think we ordered really well! As a group, we ordered: -Sauteed water spinach with spicy bean (needed some veggies) -Cantonese style mapo tofu (classic) -Spicy salt shrimp -Chestnut and chicken in clay pot -Lamb and bean curd hot pot (soup) -House special Vietnamese style lobster (more than 5 lbs), with added noodles I thought everything was tasty and just having a variety like that in a sizeable group makes this type of dining experience such a delight. We splurged a bit with the lobster and without it or per person cost probably would have been a lot lower, but sometimes you have to splurge and with a dish like the lobster here, it's a good one to do so!
