I heard this place has a unique style of bulgogi hotpot and decided to check it out. Came here for lunch on a weekday and they were not busy; 2 tables including us. The bulgogi hotpot was indeed unique. It's kind of a fusion with Vietnamese style rice paper wraps. The hotpot itself consisted of only a few slices of beef along with a large mix of veggies and clear noodles and a pot full of beef broth. The mixture was then wrapped in the rehydrated rice paper wraps. It was a bit messy to eat but was fairly tasty and interesting. We also ordered a stir fried squid with vegetables. It was quite spicy but decently flavorful. The food, including the banchans, were generally tasty but I had a couple of issues with this place. Besides a few combos in the menu there are several additional options shown by pictures hung on the walls. Their prices were not clearly indicated. That's why we were surprised by the $44 price tag of the stir fried squid on our check. We were used to it being sub$30 at most other places with larger portions. They also charge pretty large tolls for leftover containers, which almost every other place provides for free. We had to pay $6 for 2 medium paper , 1 plastic, and 1 small paper containers. Hwang Hae Do has been a staple for me since I was a kid, and it's been around for almost 40 years for a reason. Their bulgogi yuksoo is my go to, and it never disappoints. The $110 combo is a great deal, plenty of food for five people to leave full. It comes with shrimp stir fry, Korean pancakes, dumplings (if you skip the soju or beer), and a steamed egg. We passed on the alcohol and got dumplings instead, which was a solid choice. Everything tasted fresh and well made. One of the best tips: take some of the broth from the bulgogi dish, mix it with rice, and you get an insanely flavorful soup. Always a great experience here. read more

Such a hidden gem! I see a lot of people wanting to know where do Korean people eat in Ktown... this is one of those places. My mom (Korean born in Korea) says this is her favorite place in KTown. I came here for lunch on the weekend and all the tables were older Korean people. So that says everything right? We got a combo for 2-3 people, and it was a lot of food. (I'm struggling to describe it because it's not your typical Ktown restaurant that focuses a lot on one dish that non-Koreans are very familiar with lol.) This place was WONDERFUL!! I wanted KBBQ but desired a setting that was more casual and homey. I also wanted a spot a little separated from DTLA/heart of KTown because parking SUCKSSSSS!!! It was still a little challenge to find parking here but not terrible. When I walked in, the place was nearly full. ALL the diners were Korean. I said, "okay. I made the right choice." The lady's taking our order were nice! Lots of smiles and friendly. We ordered 2 all you can eat KBBQ. I was stunned what they brought out! She came back with beautiful bonchon dishes. We got a "build it yourself spring roll" set up. We got delicious bibimbap! She served a tasty, spicy noodle soup. I thought oh my god how are we supposed to finish this? Not to mention the actual BBQ! ALL OF IT was FRESH and soooooooo gooooood. OH! We also got a scallion pancake. I've never had a scallion pancake I liked, so I didn't think I would like this either. I always ask for something that hits the spot, that's leaves me like man I need to come back and this was it. My family and I came here and it was about 10 of us and they knocked it out the park with all the food. We got everything from the soup bulgogi to the KBBQ and we enjoy everything. This bulgogi soup/hot pop style was better than the other hot pots out there, the KBBQ was a great size for it not to be all you can eat and the service was great. Oh wow what a quiet hole in the wall type of joint! The staff are so lovely, they check up on you so often which is nice when one is unsure if the marinated meat is cooked thru. Wow. I love the quality of all the ingredients here! The meat is to die for and the veggies are ridiculous. I'm really enamored and I will visit back! Located in a small strip mall on the corner of Western Ave & Rosewood Ave in K-Town Los Angeles. Has a dive feel to it. The inside is way nicer than the exterior suggests. Came here with my sister and a couple friends. We arrived at 11:30, so a little early for lunch do we pretty much had the restaurant to ourselves for a good 15-20 minutes before other parties starting filling in. My sister had been here multiple times so she ordered for our group. We all shared a hot pot of beef, assorted vegetables and clear noodles. It was delicious! We also had a bowl of vegetables to make spring rolls...came with a slightly spicy dip/chutney sauce. This was also delicious but in a light and fresh manner. We also had grilled marinated pork. Also delicious! Service was quick and attentive throughout our meal. Happy to report all four of us walked away full, happy and satisfied. Certainly not your run of the mill Korean dishes but had many Korean flavors from my youth. The broth. The richness. The abundance of different ingredients. All the dishes were great!! Definitely a hidden gem in the ktown "kbbq" scene. I believe they did your typical kbbq grill back in the day, but now they specialize in yooksubulgogi (as well as other traditional Korean dishes). The bulgogi is served hot pot style with some broth and a ton of veggies in the broth. The most unique part about the experience is that it's served with rice paper and fresh veggies, so that you can make your own spring rolls! There's not a lot of places that offer this (if any) and the portions are huge. Keep in mind that the servers are older Korean ladies, so don't come in expecting immaculate service. read more

I was recommended by someone to try their 육수불고기 and I am so glad I did. My friend and I came on a Friday night around 630PM and had no wait. We were seated fairly quickly. We got 2 servings of their 육수불고기 and I believe they're known for this. I didn't know what to expect since I've never heard of this dish before. Basically this is like hot pot + spring rolls. In the middle, you get a big pot of bulgogi in the middle and you get various of veggies on the side with rice paper and you make your own spring rolls out of it. Everything was soo good. I loved how fresh all the ingredients were and the amazing side dishes that come with it. If you're in LA this is definitely a must. The only downside is the service can be a little slow. This place exceeded my expectations. I found the restaurant by searching Yelp. When we entered the restaurant, we were greeted right away, and sat right away. We also received our menus and water quickly. The service here was truly impeccable! Our waiter was very nice friendly and explained things on the menu. We decided to try their all you can eat Korean bbq. The food came out quickly and there were so many banchan! We got bibimbap, 6 side dishes, Korean pancake, and spring rolls! We stumbled upon Hwang Hae Do when we found out Western Doma next door was too crowded. Since this is a Korean BBQ spot, I was delighted to see a la carte items on the menu for lunch such as bibimbap, soon dubu, etc... The restaurant is deceptively spacious and the servers are very friendly. It's a homey vibe and you feel welcomed. The banchan has a good variety and they even gave us a few items on the house (green onion pancake and soup). I wish there was fish cake as part of the banchan but I might be asking for too much. I ordered the soon dubu with seafood and I liked it! The soup was flavorful and there was a healthy amount of seafood in the pot. The tofu was as expected and they give you a side of rice to accompany the soon dubu. I'll probably be back to try their signature bulgogi yooksoo! read more

Thanks to Yelp for filtering this place to the top of my list. How much does $48 get you? Tons of food...I ordered for me, mum and dad. Luckily Samantha joined us, but we were still defeated by the plates of food we ordered a seafood ironpot stew, a classic tofu bowl and one of my faves to dip in soy sauce... seafood pancake. What a misnomer They claim to specialize in dumplings yet it was very mediocre. Ordered a dumpling soup. They said their broth was made with beef bones yet the only similarity was the milky color. Previous reviews of Hwang Hae Do are accurate--blend of Korean BBQ, shabu, and Vietnamese food! My only complaint was poor service. At the end, we asked for fried rice and they insisted on giving us noodles. When we asked why we didn't get fried rice, they said that we got noodles. TIP--don't take noodles. LOL. It wasn't even knife cut noodles (kalgooksu), but rather glass noodles. How lazy. On to the good! For two people, we got 2 orders of the yook soo bulgogi, and it was enough for probably 2 females and one male. The meat and broth are poured into the pan and when everything is cooked, you can choose how you want to make the spring roll wraps. There are plenty of toppings to choose from: pickled garlic and jalapeño, thinly sliced veggies (cucumbers, carrots, onions, and red and green cabbage), chili sauce, and lettuce. I liked this place because the bulgogi was not as sweet as normal kbbq places. My only complaint about this is that it's a lot of work and it can get saucy, so don't get too greedy when adding all the fix-ins. Also a plus is lots of banchan! Sounds a bit all over the place, but while you're enjoying it all you can think is "Wow why didn't any come up with this sooner??" We went with the yooksoo bulgogi per everyone's recommendations. It's ~$20 a person for an all you can eat deal... comes with unlimited premium Korean side dishes (including gyoza and Korean pancake), rice, spring roll rice papers and assorted veggies, egg soup, tofu soup... ALL KINDS OF EVERYTHING you can possibly think of. The broth is similar to a sukiyaki-- sweet/soy sauce. Basically a bulgogi broth. SO MUCH FOOD. Very filling. The flavor can get repetitive though so it's nice to enjoy just once in a while. I came back a week later with by boyfriend and it was not as enjoyable. The AYCE option and regular yookoo bulgogi are the same price -- BUT if you don't eat that much, I recommend opting for the regular option because one serving is plenty + you can take leftovers home. The ladies here always make you feel welcome. I've been here AGES ago because their mandu (dumplings) are known to be delish, but I haven't been back in a while. My dad actually recommended this place, because it's a new twist on bulgogi. In addition to the usual Korean BBQ setup, you can order a soupy version where the beef is not only marinated but the grill they setup for you has a moat all around to collect the juices and cook the thinly sliced beef and squash slowly, allowing the sweet marinade to soak into each slice. We get the combo that includes a pot of stew, steamed eggs, and a plate of thinly sliced pig trotters tossed into a sweet, spicy, and slightly tangy salad. Their twist on bulgogi also includes rice paper that you can soften at the table and a plate full of veggies so that you can make your own bulgogi rolls. I'm not a big fan of bulgogi, but should the mood strike me, I know Hwang Hae Do will be at the top of my list! read more
