Among all the soondae‑gukbap places in LA, this is the one I love the most. I've been a regular for almost 20 years, and the owner and staff are always incredibly kind. They use only fresh ingredients, the kimchi is fantastic, and the place has the warmth of a home‑cooked meal. They always greet me so warmly and with such genuine smiles that it makes me want to visit even more often. I can't do gamey *at all* but I thoroughly enjoyed the Soondae Combo / 순대정식 menu. The skin of the soondae has a snappy texture I like, that I haven't gotten anywhere else (mostly the ones I've tried are quite soft throughout). My partner and I agreed that the insides were a bit crumbly and we would have preferred it be bit more chewy (maybe more moist or sticky?). But we agreed it's the best soondae we've had overall in California. I particularly enjoyed the soup which I usually can't eat due to it being gamey. This one was flavored so well and had great depth. Service was also great - the waitress was kind enough to give us both cold and hot barley tea. Tip: We were a bit overfilled with the large soondae combo. I think a medium soondae combo is enough for two, provided you're also eating the banchan. She brought us ice water and tea. The three of us ordered one soondae combo, the steamed pork hocks, and a kimchi stew. Local gem! Long history of flavor here in Ktown I got to have for the first time. My sister, partner, and I came in around 7pm on a Saturday. A couple of tables were open so we were greeted, and sat down in a zip. The menu is seen on their wall which is helpful! We were served a nice variety of banchan and delicious kimchi. The last time I visited this restaurant was almost 10 years ago, which is completely bonkers considering I really liked it. Since then, the restaurant is no longer "hole-in-the-wall" to me, but rather more of a mom-and-pop business. In the past decade, they expanded the place a little more to fit more customers, I think an extra room? A larger kitchen? It felt roomier during this recent visit. Still a no-frills type of place, but I think that's what I would prefer and expect from a restaurant that specializes in soondae. This time, I ordered more than just a plate of soondae. I ordered the Soondae jungsik and grilled mackerel -- and they gave us a spicy goat soup! THEY WERE ALL SO GOOD. I've never had a grilled mackerel that was so juicy, tender, and not overwhelmingly salty. The soondae was as great as I remembered, and the soups were lovely. Just the right amount of seasoning. The prices were also very reasonable considering how tasty the food was. I'm writing this review now, and honestly craving everything again. The only thing I would change about my next visit would be ordering an entire plate of only soondae with none of the intestines on the side. That's just more of a personal preference. If you like the intestines, go for it. They give you the option of adjusting what you want on your soondae plate.
