Yet another NYC Italian restaurant crossed off! II Buco is a dimly lit restaurant with a lively atmosphere. We went around closing time, but there were still plenty of people enjoying their food and drinking wine. My friend reserved us a table in the wine basement, but they had a private party there at the time, so we sat at one of their regular tables upstairs. Their food is pretty good. We ordered bread, tagliatelle, and burrata. I didn't like the peas in the pasta as much, but it was a great light summertime pasta. Overall, service was great. I have to get used to getting just tap water without ice, but it's a pretty restaurant with rustic vibes. read more

We stopped in for a snack since we wandering in the hood. Il Buco is an institution on the NYC culinary scene; our drop in reinforced that notion. We sat at the bar and ordered the fluke ceviche, fried artichokes and cavatelli to share and the hostess, Jada (?sp) made us feel like we were in her kitchen, offering details on the onerous preparation of the mini artichokes (we asked) and the other dishes. Visiting from out of town for the holidays. Came to the city two years ago to this restaurant and really enjoyed the excellent ambience and thoughtfully made food. I had the displeasure of going there last night to find the restaurant itself still packed with locals and tourists, however the food was terrible. The thrown together ingredients, lack of flavor and rude table service were at the forefront of the experience I will say a very notable mention to the excellent bartender who is really kind and went out of his way to help make our time special. A giant pass if you're thinking about going to this overrated, overhyped, relic. I will also say that the wine selection by the glass is laughable and they served us three day old wine. This place is fantastic--quality food, amazing outdoor dining experience, and felt special from every course. We ordered the following: - octopus - perfectly charred, covered in seasoned chickpeas. Really, really good. -truffle pasta -wow, extremely decadent and delicious. Was pricey for a pasta ($36) but definitely worth it - orecchiette- this was good (everything was good!) but probably the least favorite of the meal. - dessert - a lovely chocolate cake, which was not too sweet and was truly the perfect way to end the night. We each also got a glass of wine, which were both very, very good. All in all one of the better meals we've had in such a long time, thank you so much to il Buco for providing such a delicious, special meal! read more

Super cute and delicious spot! We came here for my sister's wedding and sat in the wine cellar for the evening. It was a set menu, but the food was fantastic! We started off with charcuterie, then moved on to the apps, pasta, a protein and then dessert. I can't even remember everything that was served, but the stand outs to me were the bisteca, the charcuterie, tagliatelle, and the panna cotta! The service was just fantastic. Amazing food and atmosphere. The area is spacious and the decor is thoughtfully picked out. The restaurant also sells sandwiches and bakery items near the front, in addition to pasta and cheese. We started off the a charcuterie board with some bread (would recommend). I loved the garganelli pasta with forest mushrooms and arugula. Ah man, I was let down by Il Buco. My party of three was seated in the sub-level wine cellar, which is awesome but freezing. We then shared: + ricotta appetizer + risotto + torchio + fish entree + Brussels sprouts + chocolate cake The ricotta app was bland and the torchio was a bit too salty. Best dish was the risotto. As awful as lockdown has been in NYC, the move to outdoor dining is an unintended gift. The street was blocked off recently when my daughter and I visited Il Buco, so we sat outside on the cobblestone street in a near perfect summer Saturday night. Though I favor more tradition Italian, my daughter insisted I try the spaghetti alla gricia and it was fabulous. Even the simple arugula salad seemed superior in a subtle way. The service - as in most places - was a bit spotty, but that I feel is more a byproduct of servers adapting to the outdoors, with masks etc., not the fault of the servers. Il Buco is now at the top of my list of favorite NYC eateries, can't wait to go back! read more

Really cute inside! Everything we ordered was quite good, but agree with other reviewers that the food is not particularly out-of-this-world spectacular. We made a reservation for 12pm on a Thursday and the restaurant was empty when we arrived. We got the bread basket, tagliatelle with pancetta, pesce, and another pasta dish with mussels (linguini?). Fresh baked breads were really good. Tagliatelle with pancetta and peas was a bit on the salty side, but it was a good amount of food for 4 people. Fish was good but not too notable. The pasta with mussels was good but not mind-blowing. Overall, I can see how it's a cute/home-y/romantic spot (for the vibes) but wouldn't put it on the bucket list per se for the food aspect. read more

I have been to Il Buco more times that I can count on my two hands at this point. It's always been a mainstay and a cozy knook of a spot to enjoy a delicious meal. I still enjoy it's rustic energy and its toned down "sceney" vibe, but as of late I've found the food to be less than exciting and falling flat. This all being said, the waiters are fantastic and they have a pretty fantastic wine list. If you're in the neighborhood, you can't really go wrong with having a delicious meal here. read more

Had a nice lunch here last weekend. Great ambience- nicely decorated without being stuffy or contrived. Loved the flowers on the larger tables that give a little privacy if you're sharing the table with another small group. Even the restroom has nice flowers! Had the salad, small calamari and orecchiette. All were perfectly prepared and very flavorful. Desserts looked good but we wanted to leave room for a walk around the neighborhood. It's a very small restaurant so you'll definitely need reservations. Book ahead bc they book up quickly. read more

I stumbled into il Buco with friends a week ago. The ambience was warm and cozy. Smell was great inside here, nice italian cuisine. We ordered wine, and cacio e pepe pasta. This Italian restaurant has a wonderful ambiance, the food is delicious and the staff is friendly and resourceful! I recommend and will be back. I ordered the mushroom tagliatelle, which was creamy and not heavy. I ordered a glass of red wine from côté du Rhône region for $17 which was ok. Not exceptional. The Cestino di Pane (olive oil and bread) was very good, especially the darker bread, which was fluffy, fresh and delicious. I recommend sitting at the bar if alone, it's fun. The bar tender knows what he's doing and has good recommendations. I like that they change the menu daily with fresh seasonal ingredients and dishes. Will be back! read more

Visited Il Buco on a Sunday evening at 8PM for a birthday celebration. Enjoyed a tasty meal, but will not be returning to Il Buco for another dining experience.  We ordered three starters and three entrees for our party of three. We ordered fried peppers, brussels sprouts, and calamari. As our entrees, we ordered a spaghetti dish with scallops, a halibut dish, and a chicken dish. After ordering, our waitress asked whether we wanted to start with bread, which we weren't particularly interested in but agreed to anyway (and were later charged for).  Out of the appetizers, the shredded brussel sprout salad was the most tasty, but wasn't terribly exciting: just well balanced flavors, and a nice light way to start the meal. The peppers were lightly breaded and came with a classic tarter-style sauce; they were well-made, but not particularly interesting. The calamari fell short: the squid was over-cooked and chewy, and the shrimp were undercooked. The bread ended up being one of the better starters, served with olive oil and flaked sea salt. The mains were better-executed than the appetizers. The halibut was cooked to perfection and was perfectly flaky, and the chicken was roasted exceptionally. The spaghetti lacked memorable flavor, but was improved by the side of parmesan that we requested.  We ordered the panna cotta and chocolate buckwheat tart for dessert. Dessert was easily the most impressive course: the portions were generous and not overly-sweet, and the chocolate tart was delivered with a candle for the birthday celebration.  The meal was tasty, but certainly not worth the hype or the price tag. There are far better italian restaurants where you can be truly blown away by the freshness of the pasta or the inventiveness of the flavors; Il Buco under-delivered in both of these categories. read more

Horrible service! Waitress barely talked with us, none of the normal exchange of how the food was etc.. The other servers dressed in shorts and inappropriately dressed up like working in a fast food restaurant. Bad taste food, uncooked salmon, spaghetti with raw fish water fancy named. The stake was not a steak but a piece of chewy meat. Definitely not a NY strip. Overpriced and wanna be fancy by the name of dishes. This is not Italian restaurant. A single plus: good bread, but doesn't seem their product. Advice to owner: go back to the basics: cleanup the place, fire the waitress, dress up the waiters, replace the cook, add some Italian menu dishes items. Sad experience! It doesn't feel like a trendy spot, but a place more focused on their product and customer experience than being "cool". We will return. And if you're trynna get la*d, just take your date here, order a good glass or bottle of wine then have them use the restroom which is filled with fresh lavender! We sat outside which had a bunch of heaters and was actually a little too warm but it was a nice vibe. We got the octopus for appetizer which wasnt bad. The tagliatelle which was supposed to be truffle flavored didnt have any flavor at all besides butter. We asked for pepper and parmesan but not sure if it's worth the price for no flavor. The risotto was good but also tasted better with pepper and parmesan. For dessert, we tried the olive oil cake which was okay but tasted better with a scoop of vanilla ice cream that we added. They change the menu here every day so would maybe consider coming back to try somethjng new. read more

We were on time for our 8pm reservation but they were not ready to seat us. We had to wait a little while for them to prepare the table but it didn't take too long. The overall ambiance was nice, even though it was dark and the table felt a little unstable. The appetizers (pork sausages and olives) were great but the two entrees were really underwhelming. The pasta did not taste fresh and the sauce was not very flavorful. The duck came out room temperature. It was also the chewiest, toughest duck I've ever had. Had a wonderful experience here when I was taken on a date. Everything was super delicious and felt plenty full. They also have a very extensive wine list. I felt my date's meal was a bit better than what I had. He had the steak which was cooked very nicely! Had some good sides to go along with it. We also had a couple appetizers. The burrata was pretty good. Probably my favorite thing! the salad was a little weird but not bad. The charge for bread was a bit much, but he brought us more. It was good. Nothing out of this world, but good. I had the pasta with truffles on top. While it was good, I didn't feel the truffles had as much flavor as I have experienced at other places in the past. I feel for the cost of that dish I expected a bit more flavor and umph to it. It honestly seemed like butter noodles with truffles thrown on, which is why they lose one star for me. Review based purely on service which would be a 0/10 but I do want to go back and actually try the food some time - hopefully when a different host is working and the staff is a bit more helpful. I made a reservation four four on a Friday night about 2 weeks in advance. I arrived a few minutes early and went to approach the door. There were a few gentleman standing outside and one asked me about my reservation - I told him and he was like "One moment". He went in and I literally never saw him again. About 5 minutes later a host came out to ask about our reservation - which I had made for outdoor - and she let me know that they had a large party coming to sit under the covered area and that our table would need to be one of the uncovered ones on the sidewalks. It was raining..... I let her know that we would be okay to sit inside as well. She then went inside to take a look. We got inside and stood at the end of the bar as she just stood at the host stand for about 10 minutes. At this point our other two arrived. We are now awkwardly standing next to a table that had gotten sat a short while before. I felt bad that we were so close to this table. The host continued to walk around and what I can assume is just check the floor - see how tables were shaping up, etc. Another 5 minutes and she eventually tells us they don't have anything available for us inside. We had been there close to thirty minutes at this point and I saw multiple empty tables around us. However - I also NEVER saw a plate a food. Or the table we were crowding get greeted by a server. It was a Friday night at 745 - we left around 815 - and the "large party" outside had not yet arrived to be sat. Frustrating to say the least as we had friends in from out of town who had specifically sought this restaurant out after hearing rave reviews. Every restaurant has a bad night and I do hope the next time I go that it's a bit better of service. I understand when I choose outdoor dining that weather can effect our tables - but it would of been much better if she just told us quickly that they couldn't seat us and we could of found another reservation nearby. The lack of any sort of urgency or care was what really threw me. Fingers crossed I am able to get a reservation that is actually utilized in the future. read more

I booked this place for a special dinner for my friend's birthday about a month in advance. Reservations were fairly easy to come by on Resy. We came at 6:30pm on a Tuesday night, and the restaurant had several tables full already. We were seated in the main room, and given water and menus immediately (they did not seat me until my friend arrived). We ordered bread ($5), burrata for an appetizer, and three pastas. The bread was presented first, served with olive oil and salt. It was good, but I have had better complimentary bread at other restaurants. The burrata, served with sliced figs and balsamic vinegar, was good, but it was something I could have made at home on my own. Our two pastas that were served next, the tagliatelle, and the torchio, were simply put, not good at all. My friend remarked that the torchio has a better, bouncier texture than the tagliatelle. I thought the taste was better than the tagliatelle also, which was quite bland. No one checked on us after we had started eating to see if everything was good, as is common in most other New York restaurants. There was a long wait in between the pasta and the risotto. The risotto was not good at all - it was flavorless, with some pieces of pancetta thrown in. Then came the time for dessert - we ordered the olive oil cake. I had called Il Buco earlier in the day, requesting to please send out a dessert for my friend's birthday and write happy birthday on it. This request was not complied with, which I was actually quite annoyed about, as I hadn't enjoyed any of the food. The best thing about this restaurant was the ambience. Looking around, you can see that it is truly a scene, and specifically for beautiful people. The decor makes you feel as if you've been transported to a rustic Italian restaurant in the heart of Tuscany. The acoustics of the room are unfortunately not set up in a way that allows you to hear your dining companion well. The service here was very brusque and abrupt. We had one man come out to us at the beginning of the meal, but then as we were caught up in conversation, he waved his hand at us, as if to say "forget about it", and never returned to our table again. The rest of the servers were okay, but seemed harried. I would not recommend this place or return, which is unfortunate because it is famed as one of New York's best. read more

One of my three favorite restaurants in NYC. A cozy, old-world, but not formal atmosphere, a lovely and unobtrusive wait staff, an extensive wine list that always turns up a perfect wine in a wide range of prices, and absolutely spot-on food. On my recent visit, I had a heavenly gazpacho and a risotto that was so delicately cooked, which is not easy (especially in a restaurant), and was so flavorful. All right, I had really high hopes for this place, yet I was rather unimpressed. Il Buco is known to be intimate, is recommended for a romantic spot, and is known for fare that should enable the patron to declare, "Magnifico!" Alas, the restaurant was loud, the dishes were underwhelming, and the night got me saying, "Che triste." The duck breast and figs was a good choice in terms of flavor delivery, but they need to work on its presentation. The greens were slapped on top of the duck and figs like a last minute ingredient toss before it exits the kitchen and it gave a poor impression of the entree. I did not find the bread basket to be worth the time nor money. I do not recommend the risotto, don't do it! You can smell the cheese but it lacked salt and any sort of taste. The salumi plate is acceptable, but I wish the waiter told us what each item was on the cutting board. Is this head cheese? I guess so. Was that prosciutto? Maybe. What the hell did you just eat? I dunno, something salty and meaty Saving grace is our waitress. She was lovely and friendly, and carried out a wonderful conversation when my boyfriend and I had a bet on how the duck was prepared. It's warm people like her that makes the visit worthwhile. Terrible experience celebrating my wife's birthday tonight. When the runner brought out our entrees-one was missing. He realizes it and tells us he'll go check on the Cacio Pepe pasta. He never came back. The waiter never came to check on us. The managers were hanging at the bar having a fun time yapping together oblivious to what was going on. Finally grabbed one of them-he too never comes to check on us. I was fuming as orders of Cacio are walking right by us. Finally had to get up and break up the party at the bar and let them have it. Dish finally showed up but the other four of us had completely cold food. Didn't even check in on to see if they should replace our meals. Last time I'll pay 50$ for a cold steak. So unfortunately we made it around 3pm and were told the kitchen won't serve anything except appetizers even though clearly the place was packed. They also wouldn't seat us only at the bar. They were literally turning customers away because there wasn't room at the bar! I mean if you have that much business why close the kitchen? And all our food was so good and tasty and fresh I wish so much I could have tried from the main menu. I will go back. The service was bad. It was terrible and expensive. The food was gross. The manager might be from out of town and so they don't understand the NYC restaurant scene. We were asked to move to another seating area and our water and other items were not moved by the wait staff. We moved it ourselves and we tipped well... It discouraged us from ordering any more food. The food was terrible. The drinks were OK. It is hard times for everyone and all people want to do is support local businesses but the service here was garbage. read more
