My Fifth Avenue confidant--my guy in the park--clearly knew the room. The maître d' spotted him instantly and practically glided over, hand outstretched, greeting him like an old friend. We were seated at a beautiful table set with a striking orange flower and matching water glasses--small details, but they made an impression. Before we even ordered, they brought out complimentary bites: signature eggplant appetizer, fresh bread, and crisp crostini. Honestly, it was so good I would've gladly paid for it and especially since my friend was picking up the tab.. We started with zucchini flowers--delicate blossoms filled with ricotta, lightly battered and fried to perfection and calamari fritti with a spicy marinara. You could tell the seafood was fresh: tentacles, varied cuts, the kind of plate that doesn't try to hide behind uniformity. Then came the standout: pollo alla parmigiana. Thinly pounded, perfectly plated--it looked like something you'd hesitate to disturb, but once you did, it delivered. My friend seated to my left ordered the English Dover sole--pristine, simply prepared. I let him try my chicken. He did not return the favor. I keep notes. The service was impeccable, almost choreographed--attentive without hovering, polished without ever feeling stiff. I finished lunch with a short perfectly made espresso and biscotti that struck the perfect balance: crisp, but not tooth-breaking. It's funny how certain meals stay with you. Good food helps, but it's really the combination of great company and the feeling of being taken care of that lingers.
