My dear lord my sister saw this place posted on an IG reel and this girl flew all the way from Boston to visit me, and this food truck was on the top of her list to hit up. I live in Westwood, and I ended up driving us both all the way across town to this Glassell Park food truck to order empanadas. While we were there, we spoke to some girlies who were in line before us (they had already been waiting for 45 minutes LOL), so we were expecting a similar wait. We ended up ordering 6 empanadas, and the wait time took a total of ....maybe 1 hour? During this time, we walked very slowly to the UPS store since I needed to return some Amazon items, and we went back to my car and watched an episode of Love is Blind together. Then next thing we know, the order is ready. We did not eat it until we went back to my place. There were a couple small tables perched outside of the food truck, but those were long taken, and we didn't really want to eat there. Let me tell you, I recorded this girl eating the empanadas and that freaking CRUNCH is unreal. Also, that was my first time having these Filipino-style empanadas and they were....so good...especially with the vinegar. I'm writing this review about a month later, and I can still remember how good it tasted. I sometimes go back to the video I took of my sister biting into the empanada just to ASMR listen to that first bite she took. I forgot the empanada orders that we got but it was like a large one that was stuffed with the meat and everything I think. I've been wanting to try the viral Ilocos empanada and had been searching for a place to buy one. When I came across Ilocos Empanada on Yelp, I had to give it a try. They're located in Glassell Park. Make sure to call ahead to confirm their hours, since they seem to vary daily. You'll also want to use the Lutong Bahay restaurant address to find the truck. I came on a Wednesday evening around 6:30 pm and there was no line, but right after I ordered, people started showing up, mostly picking up phone orders. I ordered four large and meaty empanadas for $7.50 each (tax included). Each one is packed with ground longanisa, papaya, mung beans, and a whole egg in the middle. They're huge and bigger than most people's palms. One is enough to fill you up. They tasted delicious. The edges were super crispy, and the filling reminded me of vegetable lumpia. It paired really well with the vinegar. We didn't eat them until about 40 minutes later because of our commute home, and they were still hot and crispy. My only recommendation would be to include more vinegar. It came in a tiny 0.5 oz container, which wasn't enough for such a large empanada. Luckily, I had spiced vinegar at home, which also tasted great with it. The empanadas were pretty oily, but that's expected since they're deep-fried. One of me and my gf's favorite Ilocos Empanada spots. My gf and I tried Ilocos Empanada in Ilocos Norte where my dad is from and found this spot that hits close to home. I highly recommend this food truck if you want to experience Ilocos Norte's food staple. The customer service was amazing and friendly. I am loving the upgrade of their new food truck. Cheese empanada: I did not like the cheese empanada. Kind of strange since I love cheese. I guess I just didn't think it went well together. Regular empanada: Like all of the empanadas, it was big. The shell was good and crispy. The egg part was good but the mung beans threw me off. I've had ilocano empanadas and the mung beans in this one seemed undercooked and was too hard for me. Don't follow the directions on their Yelp page unless you want to go on an adventure through the hills of Eagle Rock! I suppose it was my fault, I didn't just go to their IG page first to follow that address instead. A friend and I came here for the sought-after empanadas, but be prepared for a wait. There wasn't a line when we got there, so we thought that we got lucky. It actually ended up taking over an hour and 15 minutes to get our food! Not sure if people were ordering, then leaving to come back later, as we saw people show up in the middle of our wait, grabbing their orders, then leaving. The menu is a bit limited if you're looking for just empanadas. You can pick between the regular size and the large "meaty" empanadas. I picked the larger one, but honestly didn't see that much of a difference. First off, the shell and the egg are very good. I wish there were a bit more meat inside my large empanada. What I did not like were the mung beans. They were a bit odd addition, and normally I love mung beans, but when they're cooked, they're softer. In this empanada, they were a bit on the harder side. Their special vinegar is really good and completes the deal. It wouldn't be the same without it. There is just a bit of a wait, because it is freshly cooked. Ended up visiting this spot after having Ilocos Empanada reels take over my Social Media. I was surprised to see that I actually had one so close to me so I asked my brother to accompany me to try it. We got there around 5 or 6, I can't remember what time exactly, but it was within the hour of them just opening up. (I'd like to note that this was planned because I had read they the tend to sell out). They're parked on the corner of Eagle Rock Blvd and W Ave 40, where the Emergency Vet spot is. Pulling up I wasn't sure if it was the actual truck, but for those who do come looking for it, it had a dragon along its side, so that's the giveaway. It was drizzling when we got there so we made our way to order as soon as we could, but it seems we got there a little too early as they were still prepping. We ordered and they let us know that they were still taking care of preparations so they asked for our phone number so they'll let us know when our order was ready. We figured it would take 20-30 minutes, so we went to the pet shop down the ways and picked up some stuff for our dog. We finished up there and we had yet to receive a call that our order was ready, so we just sat in the car to wait. Unfortunately, we ended up waiting about an hour. We really wished we knew this as we literally could have just went back to home, but you live and you learn. After watching a show while waiting, we got the call that our order was up; 4 orders of the large and meaty. We got our order and headed home to eat it. I would like to note that there is a small area that you can sit and eat it there if you'd like, but because it was drizzling and cold, we didn't think it was a good idea to just huddle up under the pop-up canopy to eat on the table and chairs. We wanted to eat and enjoy it comfortably, so we went home. So now, the food! The paper bags were drenched in not rain, but i'm guessing oil? Grease? But that did NOT put us off. The large and meaty are indeed large. They're bigger than my hand. They came with a small container of the spiced vinegar, which was great, but we also make our own, so we used ours, too. Despite the paper bags being soaked, the actual empanada still held its crunch, and boy oh boy did I enjoy it. The crunch was good, and the filling was good, but it got delicious once I got to the yolk park of the egg inside. YES, an egg! (there's a cross section of it in a picture I posted). I don't think I would have quite enjoyed it as much if it wasn't for the vinegar, but overall it was a pretty good meal. I'd rate the whole experience a 3/5, just because of the crazy long wait time, but a 4/5 for the actual empanada. I'd definitely recommend that people try it. It's different, but yummy! I came by on Good Friday but they were closed so I came back the next day! First time trying Ilocos Empanadas. We ordered 3 Regular, 2 w/ Cheese, 2 Melon Juices, 2 Special Vinegar (not necessary, they provide you with little containers). It is different from the typical sweet longganisa, the filling was ground pork, egg with mung beans. The wrap was delicious, had a great crunch, and so fresh it was steaming hot. Vinegar tastes like apple cider vinegar with some seasonings. I wish they gave the melon juices for free because we waited so long for the food lol! I understand it's time consuming to make Ilocos Empanadas, but did not expect to wait 1.5 hours for five empanadas. I believe they are a team of 2 doing all the work, which I'm sure is also a challenge. However, it would be a great idea to let people know as soon as they order that there will be a significantly long wait and to write down a phone number to call when ready. When we ordered, we were not told when our order would be ready, and there was only 1 family before us so it did not look like there would be a long wait. We sat on their outdoor chairs in the shade until we finally asked. But no worries, we ended up running some errands and came back later! What makes this one stand out is they really do use Vigan/Ilocos longganisa and their vinegar was perfectly balanced. I ordered 30pcs(regular) so waiting for me was no big deal coz it's made to order. Air fried it the next day and still crispy. The lady took my 1 order of large for $7.50 since I've never tried it before and shout out to all the food bangers that made it viral Waited about 15-20.
