I would say India Garden is probably the best lunch buffet in tri-valley. It's a small place and it would seem that there would be very few options, however with buffet split into Veg and Non-veg tables, there were more than enough options. One of the curries (Pumpkin) was bit salty and another curry (Alu mutter) was very oily. Even with us being vegetarians we were able to avoid those curries and enjoy our lunch. Okay, I haven't yet been back but just read all of the reviews of this place to see if it will be worth my time. Seems like it's plagued with inconsistency but I think I have an answer for those "low star" folks who are wondering what the fuss is all about. No offense to anyone out there but Pleasanton isn't exactly the hotbed of tasty culinary creations and again, no offense, but this might be a reflection of its patrons' palates. Look up and down Main Street and you'll see what I mean: not a lot of flavor or authenticity out there. So if you want seriously flavorful Indian food, as a rule of thumb, go where you see Indians eating and here's a tip: Indians usually eat dinner later than the mainstream. BUT if you want to support a local business, particularly Downtown, and don't care if the curries are discernable or the chicken is too buttery or the lassi lacks mangoie freshness, patronize India Garden. It's not easy to "make it" in this slow economy and we can assume that they really care to serve this community. While you're at it, give a little thanks that our downtown isn't overrun with big chain crap! read more

Our meal was really good and flavorful! We ordered the tandoori chicken and chicken masala. Both dishes tasted really good. My only complaint would be that the service was pretty slow, the tandoori chicken took about an hour to come out, and we didn't really get water refills. I went there for their lunch buffet today after reading the reviews. I try to stay away from the Indian restaurants in the tri-valley because I'm spoiled by the food I've had down south. I used to eat Indian once a week. The food quality and service here was great. There isn't as much selection as some other places, but everything was very good. Even down the the Mango pudding and tea. The place itself is very cute and secluded. I would definitely go back again and recommend it to my friends. Also, what's nice about the food is that it's not as greasy as most places. And I don't get the smell as well. read more

Ohmygoodness, I am SO lucky to live near here and yet so lucky to live just far enough away not to visit everyday. The hubby and I have visited twice this far and the service is always very friendly and the dinners superb. Now this is a restaurant I have been to often and I will keep going to. The best Indian food in the Bay area and I am Indian :-) So trust me for authenticating the food here. Ambiance - Lovely, authentically desi, which blinds and wall hangings that are colorfully desi. Warms my heart and makes me miss home oodles. Food - Like my mother cooks, heart-warming, stomach-filling. Lots of flavor and not too spicy. I recommend the Dal Tadka with plain white rice. OMG, oh so yum!!!! And their naans! Their meat dishes are very well cooked, with the spices nicely blended. Drinks - They have the usual Indian brands of beer that compliment Indian food. If you haven't tried them, I'd recommend Taj Mahal. Service - 10/10 to the happy helpers here. Always polite and willing to go the extra mile with suggestions. Pricing - Reasonably priced. On an average, around $15-$20 for one person. Overall experience - Home away from home, food-wise. read more

Really wanted to like this place, as the waitstaff was nice and the decor reminded me of India. But the food was so very bland! Our samosa chaat appetizer came with ketchup...I laughed and said to my husband that this might be a bad sign, and it was! We tried to order dosa for dinner and were told they were out of it. Seemed strange to me, but we simply ordered beingan bharta (spiced, mashed eggplant) and naan (bread) instead. The naan was okay (a little burnt), but the beingan was not very good. It was swimming in oil, the peas in it were cold, and you could hardly taste any masala (spices). Dinner was so bad in fact, that we ate a few bites and then headed over to Blue Agave to have a drink and some chips and salsa instead. For Indian buffet lunches in this area, I've been to Favorite Indian Restaurant and here. COST? Both are around $10-11 but Favorite Indian Restaurant had a $1 off Yelp check-in at the time. FOOD? Favorite Indian has more variety including extra soups and ice cream. India Garden's meat quality is a bit higher (all were tender) and they separate the meat/veggies on separate carts. Everything seems fresh and I saw them refilling a couple of the trays multiple times so you know food isn't sitting out there for too long. AMBIANCE? Both are fine for lunch. India Garden is in a house type building and feels a bit more cramped. It's not suitable for any parties over four. The surrounding downtown area is cute but parking can be a slight pain. SERVICE? If you read my other review, you'll know that the waiter had a crush on my friend and we in turn, got better service. It was fine at India Garden. For me, I'd say this place has a one up over Favorite Indian. read more

This is the best Indian restaurant in the area! I can't speak for authenticity, but I can speak for satisfaction. I've had the lunch buffet and the wraps. Both are excellent, and it's hard to choose between the buffet and the wrap. Indian coffee is really good, too. This is the only place I've found to serve mushroom masala, and it is so extremely tasty, I don't know why it's not available elsewhere. The only disappointment is the size of the bench seats. They are oddly short in depth, and even though I'm a small person, I found it difficult to sit comfortably. Try to get a table with chairs if you can. read more

After I heard about their $9.99 lunch buffet special, I knew I had to come here and try out their food! I was doubtful at first that it would not taste as good as other Indian restaurants like Shalimar in Fremont due to it's cheap price, but I could not have been more wrong! There was a wide selection of curries to choose from including Butter Chicken (my all-time favorite), Brussel Sprout Masala (Sounds kind of funky but actually tastes quite delicious), Coconut Chicken (kind of watery but flavor still good), Chicken Tandoori (ohmygosh this was pretty tender and spicy but so so yummy), and so much more! I didn't quite like their naan as much, but if you're the type who likes the thin, crispier types then you should definitely come here! I had skipped breakfast to save extra room for the food but after two plates I was ridiculously full already. Thank goodness I was able to try a little bit of everything though (: Definitely a bang for your buck sort of place! Only thing I wasn't too happy about was that the waitress seated me and my boyfriend at the outside patio where there was no ac at first and we had to ask to be moved inside. Terrible service!!!! They do not know how to run a business. I placed a large order and they messed up on some of the items. When I called to tell them they gave us the wrong items they blamed it on me. He said I ordered wrong and that they have never made the item I ordered. I said well why did you have it on the menu. The owner said he needed a day in advance to get the item. I told him I placed this order over a day in advance so what now. He refused to refund any money or give a discount. He never took blame for them giving me the wrong items and for not telling me there was a problem with the order. Instead they just brought random items of food in place of what was ordered and expected me to pay for it. Horrible customer service and I will never go back and will tell everyone how terrible my experience was. read more

India Garden has always been on our list of Indian restaurants whenever Mrs. Coot and I are in Pleasanton. The food is usually good but the service has historically been their weak point. Something we've dealt with. Tonight set a new level. We arrived and had to interrupt the hostess who was on the porch chatting on her phone. Not very professional. We were seated and the only people in the restaurant. That's OK, considering it's a Monday night. We have been to India garden so many times we know the menu by memory. We looked over the menu to see if there was anything new, which there wasn't, and set the menu's down. Even though the waitress walked by the table several times busing tables from long gone customers and looked at our menus on the table, she never stopped to ask if we had any questions or offer to take our order. She did however have time to loudly laugh and have fun with other staff in the kitchen. After 10 minutes she stopped by to take our drink order. I didn't want to lose her again, so we gave her our drink, appetizer, and meal order at once. Thinking, that since we were the only people in the restaurant, the meal might come out early. Oh silly Old Coot; it didn't. Staff still had time to yuck it up in the kitchen (we were sitting 10 feet from the kitchen door). Finally when the meals came we were very disappointed. Mrs. Coot's lamb was tough and bland despite her specifically asking for it to be spicy. My chicken dish was so tender I actually DID cut it with a fork. But the flavor was...let me say...different. It was good, but wasn't the chicken tikka masala I ordered and expected. After finishing our meals the waitress was again nowhere to be found. After another 10 minutes or so, I actually had get up from the table, go to the hostess stand, and ask for my check; interrupting the hostess and waitress from playing on their phones. When I asked for the check, the response was "I suppose so." Seriously? I suppose so??? How much more unprofessional can one get? All I can say is that I'm confident I'll never be back, so they can "suppose" where my business went. read more

Worst Indian food. It looks like cooked some days ago, reheat and serve. In Sunday lunch buffet, chili chicken, butter chicken, thandoori chicken, egg curry, potato fry, dal, brinjal gravy served. All chicken items were smelling like old. One time you fill the plate, there be nothing exciting to go second round. The quality of food is risk for health. India Garden is nestled right off downtown Main in what appears to be a re-styled house turned restaurant. We found parking in back which was very close. There is not outdoor seating but there is one section that has the feel of a screen room with a larger more indoor section on the other side of the restaurant. India Garden was pretty full on Saturday around 8:30 but we got in with no reservation. The crowd was not pretentious with a large portion of Indians. Good sign. The service was friendly if disorganized in a charming way. I'm not sure if we spoke to the owner or manager but she was very nice to my wife and I. The food was great for the price point and that is why I give this place a full five stars. It's darn hard to find a restaurant in the Pleasanton area that has friendly service, delicious food for a great price. read more

Met the Hubbie here for dinner after searching on Yelp for a new Indian restaurant and this place got pretty high ratings. Saw the pics., looked at their menu and looked at the number of stars, but didn't read the reviews. The restaurant is a converted old home and very quaint. When we arrived, there were a lot of people....good sign. The wait staff was very friendly and nice and I began to get excited about the food. Stars began to drop when our appetizer was placed on our table. We ordered the Vegetable Pakoras, which our waiter highly recommended, and it was the worst Pakoras we've ever tasted. It looked like a pile of thin stringy onion rings. I managed to find a little lump of a white cabbage the size of a cheetoh ball and the Hubbie was not happy eating spinach that was rolled in batter and then deep fried resulting in a limp and shriveled up greasy leaf. Was a little confused because it's suppose to have "vegetables" in it, not a bunch of shriveled and over fried batter stringy bits. Okay...maybe they are not known for their Pakoras and our entrees might be better. Waited.....waited....waited....looked around and noticed that everyone around us were looking as agitated as we were. More stars are dropping. Man in back of us complained about the wait (said it had been two hours), people beside us complained.......One hour later and our chicken tikka masala, eggplant curry and garlic naan finally came out. Great presentation and I couldn't wait to taste it. Put a huge serving on my plate, ripped off a corner of my warm naan and dipped it into the masala....was completely disappointed. The sauce was very bland and it tasted watered down. I didn't get it. Aren't you suppose to taste all the Indian spices when you eat Indian food? Hubbie took out his phone and got on line to do some Yelp investigation noticed that most of the good reviews were about their lunch buffet.
