Went to Ivar's fish bar on 2 separate visits and its great! I have yet to try the full service restaurant next door but this review will be covering the bar outdoors. The people in the front get orders out fast and are very helpful in answering any questions you might have. First visit, I got the 4 piece Cajun Cod and the second visit, I got the 4 piece Alaskan Salmon. Both visits I also had the cup of white clam chowder. Nothing too much to say about fish and chips. They are fish and chips. A comfort food. And Ivar's does a damn good job at it. I definitely recommend the Cajun Cod, very delicious! The white clam chowder that they have is also great and is always satisfying to dig in after finishing the fish and chips. They got 2 dining areas, one little shack a couple steps away from the counter, and another one that is outdoor right on the pier where you can feed the birds. Some small stray birds make their way into the indoor area and the signs recommend you not to feed them but they don't harass you for your food and they provide some nice ambience with their chirps. The outdoor dining area has some seagulls fly in that you can throw some fries to and watch them and its very fun! Will definitely return to the bar whenever I am in the area and also hope to try the Acres of Clams restaurant next door! read more

We were told this was the spot to go for fried fish. We found out ourselves it really wasn't the fish that was that good but their CLAM CHOWDER. If you come stop by, you should try their Clam Chowder. One of the tastiest I've had. For their fried fish, we preferred the Cod and Halibut over the Salmon since the Salmon didn't exactly taste that right with the breading. I've heard Bill Gates stopped by here and surprised he did. Wasn't a top choice for me besides their chowder, get the chowder!! read more

Read many good things about Ivar's and we were excited to try. It's right by the water so we were expecting some good seafood. Ordered their halibut fish and chips and their smoked salmon chowder. I'm not sure what kind of batter they used but the best description I can come up with is "gummy". The halibut looked like it was cooked well. It looked nice and flaky but somehow was still dry. The french fries was luke warm and the inside was a bit powdery (undercooked?). The smoked salmon chowder...let's just say it should be renamed to salmon soup. A lack of smokey flavor and the chowder was so watery, it constitutes as soup. The food experience was disappointing but the service from the workers was good. read more

I was looking for the "best" clam chowder bowl in Seattle, and thankfully a friend of mine suggested this location. I have to say from all chowders I have tasted, it does pass for being one of "best." I really liked how there is seating on the pier, but when I went, there was a family feeding seagulls; which was pretty annoying because there were so many of them. It also is not the cleanest, but what do you expect? It's outside, on the pier, there are birds, etc. But there is a covered seating area. Other than that, I was not a fan of their seafood chowder. My parents also agree with me. It was not as flavorful as we expected. Their salmon chowder won my heart. The size of the pieces of salmon were just right; not too big and not too small. The broth was thick compared to their seafood chowder which was sorta of soupy(?). Overall, their salmon chowder is full of flavor and will want you craving for more. Okay so their clam chowder bowl - DELICIOUS. For me and my family, it was better than the clam chowder bowl in San Francisco. Sorry Bay Area. Quick stop for lunch, a friend and I got a salmon chowder bread bowl and 4pc cod fish and chips (half cajun). Service was fast and the condiment bar was clean, off to the corners from the counter for organization. Restrooms are located inside the restaurant dining area The covered sitting on the dock has quite a bit of seating for small or large groups and a well maintained garbage, compost, recycling station. For the food, the fish and chips were god. Filing but not overly stuffed. The plain cod was a little bland, we both preferred the cajun. Fries were standard. Salmon chowder was mild and not too heavy but would of liked more salmon vs the vegetable ratio. Sourdough bread was a good compliment I can see why Ivar's is a staple of Seattle and a nice location by the waterfront. read more

First of all I love Ivar's Acres of Clams where I feel the food is phenomenal. This quality clearly doesn't translate to their fast food offering outside of the restaurant. My wife and I ordered two 4-piece cod and fries and one clam chowder. Pretty pricey at $37 but I would be okay with that if the quality was top notch. The fish was not flaky at all and tasted a bit like chicken, the fries were soggy. The chowder was luke warm and bland. I highly recommend walking by this place and going anywhere else. read more

They weren't too busy when we got there but right after I ordered it picked up and that's where the issues began. I ordered the 3 piece cod and my wife ordered "red" chowder thinking it was Manhattan. It wasn't it was just red chowder. My fish was very greasy and soggy and so were my fries. My fantastic partner and I stopped in here I will say the good first It was fast lines, good service, and a decent selection of foods. The ice cream was terrific. It was 2.50 cents for a bit of size. However, it was delicious highly recommend it. Lovely views, as you can see in the pictures It was fantastic to see the fire department boats, and they took off for drills or something halfway through. The bad However, the food was not that good. The fries were soggy, the food itself was costly, not very large portions. We spent 40.00 on this, and we're not very impressed overall. If you feel like spending 40+ on Alaskan fish halibut and fries, go ahead and go here; however, not a favorite place and probably won't be back. Also tip don't feed the seagull. They will stay around and eat the food. We did not do this someone else did its kike. Come on; people obey the rules. Please enjoy the pictures. Anyone who hasn't reviewed this a five can piss right off because this is as five star establishment as a five star establishment can get!!!!!!!! I've lived all over the country and traveled to the UK and stuff and this is THE BEST FISH AND CHIPS ON EARTH. The fish is seasoned so well and the batter is incredible with actual flavor unlike so many of the beer battered fish that are thick and taste like nothing. The chips are a great side. The clam chowder is also the best clam chowder on earth and has real flavor and not just like 500 potatoes like they do it in Boston. On top of that the experience in the fish bar is so fun - when you're done eating, you can play french fry catch with the seagulls and it's so fun and cute. Came here for clam chowder but when I saw the menu, I decided to try something different. I had the 5 piece spicy fish cod which was perfect that was on a bed of fries. With many food places closed after 7pm on the waterfront, you're left with few options. Glad this place was open and was able to accommodate myself and my plus-one. We had a nice meal overlooking the water. Served with tarter sauce and ketchup, you must ask for vinegar. I was told it would be in the bag, but it wasn't. I assume it's not a popular request. Great place and not too pricey (I think others are confusing it with the Ivar's restaurant next to this Ivar's fish bar). Not having ever ate shellfish I decided to try the salmon chowder in the bread bowl. While the chowder was very good (too condimented for my preference which is super low) I don't think the bread bowl works too well with the salmon chowder. Honestly the food here deserves closer to 3.5-4 stars, but I had a really great experience here thanks to the lady working the counter. I went up to get a cup of clam chowder since that's what one does as a tourist in this part of town. Once I told her my order, however, she asked if I had "the promo." Feeling ashamed of my lack of savings savvy, I said no, expecting to pay the $4 for my cup. This is where the service went above and beyond, though. She took the time to show me that Ivar's had an ongoing promotion by which you show them a page on their website on your phone in exchange for a free cup of chowder. Not only that, but she walked me through the steps to find that page. There was absolutely no need or reason for her to do this for me, but I truly appreciated it. I got what I came for but got it for free. The chowder was good but not extraordinary. It still hit the spot though on a cold day. Mediocre at best. Located along the pier this location is super hectic and there is tons of confusion around which line customers are supposed to stand on and order/ pay. I ordered a basic order of fish and chips which was 3 pieces of cod served on a tray with a small container of tartar sauce and ketchup. The chips were basic french fries and while they weren't cold they definitely weren't piping hot and fried on the spot. The tartar sauce wasn't that chunky and was rather bland. The fish itself was coated and fried with a batter I could care less for. It was a little gritty and again, bland. Much like locals know that the chowder on Pier 39 isn't very good despite the tons of tourists who continue to visit, such was Ivar's Fish Bar. Chicken and fries - good. Chowder - tasteless. The chowder tasted like a non-buttery roux, or a pepperless milk gravy with chunks of potato. I even asked my husband if he wanted some because it had no seafood flavor whatsoever. I took the leftovers back to the hotel for breakfast the next morning, but it definitely wasn't something that hit the spot. Nothing to complain about here! It's cheap, accessible, fast, got me full. Ivars sauces were great (tartar, cocktail, ketchup even). The only downside eating here vs inside is if you aren't a fried-things fan, you're limited to few options offered at the stall. Also you sit either in the awning or outside where PLENTY of seagulls are flapping around trying to socialize and get a bite to eat from you- don't fall for their act!!! If you have problems with any of the above then eating at their indoor restaurant seating location is a better option for you. read more
