This was quite the surprise. The service was wonderful. Our server (Greg) was great with our 3 year old and had awesome table maintenance. The food was perfect. Yes, it's more expensive than other restaurants, but you get what you pay for. My only issue was the noise level, but I have an issue with that in any busy restaurant as I am hard of hearing. As always, J Alexanders does not disappoint. The service was excellent, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was excellent as well. My only issue with our evening came when we were leaving and it had nothing to do with the restaurant or its management. Here we are leaving after a $100+ tab, my wife well-dressed and I in starched jeans and a sport coat, and waiting in the foyer to be seated is a crew in grubby shorts, old t-shirts and well-worn footwear. They honestly looked like they had just walked off of a construction site. I realize this is a sign of the times and I don't begrudge them a nice meal but this was a special occasion for us and it did not really appeal to us to see patrons with such a haphazard appearance. read more

So this review is strictly on the service. I had called ahead to make reservations for my husbands birthday dinner. Needed a table for 5. She said the the time I asked for was booked and I said was there any other time available ( I was flexible) and she paused and said she was pretty sure she could get us a table for 5, because the only other option was a tiny booth with a giant chair on the end. I get there before my time- and what do I get. Tiny booth with a big chair. 5 tall grown adults do not fit comfortably knocking knees and rubbing elbows. It was for a birthday and I was utterly disappointed in the hostess. We left. use reason young high school Hostesses, those booths are just barely big enough for 4 average adults, and sticking a chair where waiters are running past the whole night, not smart. I love their food- and normally there aren't any problems. Just if you have a larger party make sure to be 100% clear on not having that booth situation ( unless you like knocking knees, rubbing elbows and having and over crowded table). read more

J Alexander's is my favorite restaurant in Denver for American food. The restaurant staff is friendly, the ambiance is great and I love restaurants with open kitchens. Many dishes are good, and a few are pedestrian. The atmosphere is relaxing and welcoming. A nice place to bring out of town guests that is not overly intimidating, yet dark and elegant. Best part about this restaurant is the service. We frequent this restaurant quite often, and everyone from those who greet and seat to those who serve are pleasant, charming, respectful,and on top of things. Kudos to the management! read more

Just dined there for the first time and the food and service was great! Our waiter was excellent, very friendly. The food was very good and the prices were right on for the quality. The bread before the meal the best around - typically that is not a selling point but it is hard to find great sourdough bread anywhere, so I was excited. If I wanted to find a negative, I guess it was a little bit dark? But, that was with the atmosphere and it didn't really matter. Go there! My family has been to this restaurant several times. My parents like the Prime Rib here and like the wine list. I've tried different menu items, trying to find the thing I like that rivals their Prime Rib. A salad I once ordered was slathered in salad dressing. Yuck. Then the "Rattlesnake Pasta" I once had is much too rich. The menu really doesn't include anything light. The atmosphere is great, except the noise level is obnoxious. The wait staff has always been very good. The hostesses....not so much. My last experience there was with my family again-this time we had a party of 6. On a previous visit, we were told "J Alexander's does not take reservations". So accordingly, we arrived early (5:30 pm) to avoid the crowds. When we entered the hostess area, the hostess and her other 2 co-hostessess condescendingly told us how we didn't have a reservation. When I replied "I thought you don't take reservations", she responded snidely that reservations are required for parties of 6. Well now, how am I supposed to know that based on prior visits? Their tone and snotty attitude towards us made us leave and go to a restaurant who welcomed us and our $300 dinner bill. I will only go back here for my parents wishes, but not on my own. There are better restaurants out there with better food who appreciate my business more. read more

I'M CONVINCED PREVIOUS REVIEWERS HAVE BEEN PAID OFF. My fillet Mignon was tasty but tough, the maître d' butter was shite and the best part of anything they served us for dinner Wednesday night was that a different person brought out each dish (the chef of each, to personalize the experience and let you know they care?). Our waiter was more like an unwanted best bud than someone there to serve & the entrees and sides were cooked at the required temperatures and thrown onto plain dishes without panache or attempt at presentation (prime example: whole broccoli stalk for a side just lumped on a plate, not steamed enough, buttered or anything). To be perfectly fair, our waiter was happy to get us extra silverware and plates & the Tabasco sauce needed to add life to the potato. Last night's experience wasn't worth the $100 for myself and date - I'm not sure if she asked for a to-go box so as to not offend them, but she took a bite of rotisserie chicken & one of the "smashed potatoes" & never looked back, poor girl. Um, right - you might think I'm disgruntled because I had to pay for the meal, but didn't get laid; neither is true. On the plus side, there was apparently only one fly in our section, and HE liked our food just fine. We've had better meals and service at a fraction of the cost with the Rockbottom Brewery next door. If I ever go back, it will be for the ambiance, dessert and cappuccino - those were decent. Example: The chocolate cake and ice cream (I think it was called "The Best Cake" or "Not as bad as our plain & pompous entrees" or something) had a wave of syrup across the plate, telling me someone in the kitchen has a piece of his creative soul left. Honestly though, moist & chocolaty isn't enough to raise my eyebrow. At least the waitstaff treats their customers with respect at Morton's. Guess I should have known when the party that walked in before us was 4 teenage boys in shorts and tees. Maybe I'm more an Elephant Bar type of guy who prefers a wide selection of flavorful food, but please ask someone you know who has gone what to order and what to expect if your date insists on dining at J. Pretty convenient place to come for lunch. Had some downtime in the neighbourhood and came in here. Very spacious and lot of business lunches. Service is quite good as well. The salads are massive - If you're looking for something healthy, we got the redwood chicken salad and ahi tuna salad and both were decent (chicken was better I thought). We have eaten at J Alexander's on special occasions for many years. Our late lunches yesterday were the worst meals we have ever been served there. My wife and I each ordered a prime rib sandwich. Her prime rib was very dry and tough, and my prime rib was served barely above room temperature. My loaded baked potato was also just barely warm and tasted like a tired leftover. Her fries did not taste like the fries nearly as good as the fries we had eaten there for years. The only highlight of the meal was the deviled egg appetizer which was delicious. Otherwise I would have rated the meal only one star. Not sure if we will go back anytime soon. read more

Went for a special occasion and both my husband and I ended up in the ER 24 hours later for severe dehydration after getting sick. They refused to refund bill as it's "not their policy to refund bills for matters like food posioning". I would stay away from the customer service standpoint alone. read more

I absolutely love J. Alexander's. This is one of my favorite restaurants. There was one in Columbus, Ohio, where I previously lived. So when I found the one here in Denver, I was super excited! Their spinach con queso dip is to-die-for. I love queso dips, and theirs hits the spot! I would highly recommend you get this as an appetizer. Chips are crisp with the right amount of salt. I have ordered the chicken finger platter, the veggie burger, and even a dinner of side dishes. One thing I love about J. Alexander's is you can sub any side dish into your entree. Their mashed potatoes are homemade. The not-your-ordinary mac & cheese is creamy and cheesy with a hint of bacon. Love it! I'm a big mac & cheese fan too. When you order a side of broccoli, they practically give you an entire head of it! Sides are huge... I'll order mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, and broccoli as dinner... and end up with lunch the next day. Everytime we eat at J. Alexander's, my husband orders the French Dip. By far, one of the best French Dips around. The meat is tender and juicy. Their french fries are also amazing... and you get a huge pile... so be sure to come hungry! read more

So. Mixed feelings. Great reviews from other Yelpers so had some expectations gong in. Prime rib sandwich was stellar. Worth every penny. Ordered the tuna burger ($15) and SPECIFICALLY asked if it was sliced and seared rare. Answer was yes. So, the burger comes out and it is NOT sliced but ground. Big difference. So, to remedy the situation they offered me either 4 or 8 oz slice and I ordered the larger as I was now very hungry after waiting again. Bill comes out and they charge me $28! So, messed up the meal, no concession + double markup?! I didn't even want to waste time with a manager so a crappy but honest review is what they get. If I hadn't specifically asked if it was sliced then no big deal, but a double markup to make it right is not good by the customer and horrible service. Will not be coming back. No wonder it was empty on a Saturday at lunch. The first star is because one is required. The 2nd is for the wife's prime rib sandwich. read more

I have to tell you that my experience on new years eve was less than stellar. The positives, attentive service and acceptable ambiance. The food however was a different story. Went here last night and ordered one of their specials, a coffee-rubbed ribeye, medium rare. Unfortunately, we had to send the steak back twice, and ended up leaving disappointed and hungry. The first time it came out with no pink in the center and the second time it came out dark red and cold in the center. I was most surprised when we sent the steak back the second time and I expressed my hunger-induced frustration that a manager did not come to the table. If you are looking for a nice steak, with a similar atmosphere, we prefer Flemings, Cherry Creek Grill or Houstons where the managers seem more invested in their customer's dining experiences. Had not eaten here in yrs & were excited to try again. Huge mistake!!! My wife ordered salmon which was not cooked as we ordered & sent back. It took 30 minutes to get the order corrected. By that time I had eaten & she ate alone. The menu prices are way out of line. It took almost an hour & a half for our lunch. Service poor also. Bad news.
