My husband and I really enjoyed eating here. We dropped in after shopping for a late lunch. The restaurant appeared clean, and the utensils and plates came out clean and were free of any leftover residue. The hostess greeted us as soon as we walked in, and took us to our table. My husband ordered the ribs (full rack), mac and cheese, and potatoes, which cost $23. His ribs were superb. They were tender, had a (slightly) spicy sweet sauce, and were filling. His potatoes were good and he said the mac and cheese was some of the best he's ever had. When he finished his meal the server (who was very attentive, prompt and kept the drinks coming) brought him a warm towel for his hands. My husband stated that the service was so good, that he felt like a celebrity or v.i.p. I ordered the Thai Kai Chicken salad, which was good and cost $14. The only complaint that I have is that the chicken on the salad looked like lunch meat. That is the only reason why I didn't give this restaurant 5 stars. I would have preferred chicken breast on the salad. My husband said that if this was his review, he would give J. Alexander's 5 stars. I also ordered coffee, which was good and carrot cake. They kept the coffee and all of our drinks coming. We never had to sit and wait for refills. The HUGE slice of carrot cake had the perfect sweetness (wasn't syrupy sweet), and it came out warm with melty cream cheese icing. The portions were large! I cut my cake in half and had enough for the next day. My husband's mound of potatoes were also huge, and so was his mac and cheese and my salad. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time, was hot, and the service was perfect. I forgot to mention that the server also brought out warm bread and butter. The ambiance was really nice. They had candles lit on all the tables, smooth jazz playing, and the leather seating combined with the wood furnishings gave the restaurant a rich feel. The bathrooms were even really nice (decor) and clean. My husband said that while he was in the restroom, a staff member came in. On the way out the staff member wiped down the sink and made sure things were tidy. We will be returning to this restaurant. It was worth our money and time eating here. I had the Scottish Salmon and it was great! A little pricey but well worth it! It came with mix of orzo, wild rice, cranberries,herbs, and corn. Really a great mixture! There was a sauce that came with the plate. Not sure what it was but it went really well with the salmon. Overall, I would highly recommend this dish to anyone who is looking for a great salmon dish. Just expect to pay around $20+. Tons of staff. Very friendly. I will try this again next time I am in town. read more

Me and my girlfriend went there for Valentines, we called earlier in the week to get a reservation and was told to call a 30 to 45 minutes before we wanted to arrive. We tried to call for over 45 minutes and could never get thru, so we drove there and were told it might be 2 hours. We waited patiently for 2 hrs and 20 minutes and were told it would be at least another 20 to 30 minutes. All the while they kept taking people that had called after we had arrived and kept putting them in front of us. They ruined our evening. We have been there many times and we always had great service and great food. They should either take reservations or don't take reservations... We weren't the only ones upset. We left and we wont be back. What they did was very disrespectful, but I am sure they sold a lot more over priced drinks that way. read more

Great quality food, but this location lacked a few things that I am used to from the location I usually hit up. First the service was lacking. Felt like the servers knew they would get their 18% no matter what due to our party of 6, which means included gratuity. Not horrible service, but it was meh. Second thing, no honey-croissants! One last thing is that I felt the prices were a few bucks more and there wasn't an included salad with my prime rib! It was an extra 5 bucks, when I'm already shelling out 25 for the regular prime rib! But still, it is worth it for the quality of food. I hate writing this review. J. Alexander's used to be one of me and my family's restaurants in Louisville. I'm sure if they're under new management or what, but this place keeps slowly going downhill. The food gets 5 stars. The service and menu changes, not so much. Last time we went here for my sisters graduation around lunch time(about 2:30 on a Friday.) There were maybe 10 either tables(this place is pretty spacious) and at least 15 servers and 4 cooks. Our party of 5 didn't get our check until 4. There were times we actually saw our food sitting on the line and waiters just walking passed it. We were also brought things such as coleslaw with our meal when we were told we wanted to substitute it. The waiters also seemed really...awkward? The would hover over us after delivering our food and appetizers and always seemed like they didn't want to make conversation. Unfortunately, you have to have a outgoing personality to be considered a good waiter. I'll keep coming back for the food, just wish service was more up to speed. I do recommend the chicken fingers, NYO Mac & Cheese, The Club or The Spinich dip for those who haven't been here. And be sure to come hungry. I eat here often and have never had anything but an excellent meal---but what a surprise today---I came in for the Kale Salad which is garnished with their homemade dressing. However, on the appetizer menu they had fried oysters.....the words fried oysters do not begin to describe the light, crispy, tenderness that literally melted in my mouth. I even spoke to the manager raving as I walked out and asked how often are these on the menu as I had never seen before...as with so many of their freshly sourced products they only serve them when the product is at all of its glory---so only on special days! I am already on their email notification for when the grilled artichokes are available again as they are beyond compare--- they added me for notification for the next time that oysters meet their specs too!!! O happy day, cannot wait to hear from them! I WILL BE BACK! read more

Probably my favorite restaurant in Louisville. The food is great - especially the strip steak, which you can ask to be cut any thickness you want. Their mac'n cheese is out of this world. I have literally gone here on multiple occasions and order mac'n cheese with a side of vegetables, and that's it! Their cesar salad is great - 2nd in Louisville only to Vincenzo's. I'd recommend staying away from crab cakes, but other than that, everything is always good. Decor is traditional and dimly lit. Makes for a nice romantic evening. Can dress casual, but dressing up is not out-of-place. Prices are moderately high, but very much worth the money. Food is much better and much less expensive than most other high-dollar restaurants downtown (Read: RiVue, 8up) Just seems to be a great combination of everything you could want - quality, ambience, value, customer service, etc. read more

This place was great! I am a big mac and cheese lover and they did not disappoint, it was one of the best I've ever had. I ordered the club sandwich and there was so much meat on it, it was very good. My friend ordered the Rattlesnake pasta and it was delicious! Their portions are huge. We happened to go on Sunday during brunch and they offer $1 mimosas and bloody mary's, not worth it. The mimosa hardly had any champagne, but what do you expect for a $1, and the orange juice had a lot of pulp in it and just didn't taste right. Went there for the first time today with my mother for dinner. She just had the loaded potatoe and it was a nice sized potatoe and fresh. The veggie burger was huge. It came with fries which were crisp. And they are not affraid to give you fries. A lot of places are skimpy on fries and they are a cheap product. Not here, they make sure you have plenty. Their Creme Brulee is awesome!! It is enough to share too. The service was great! You must try, you will not be disappointed. read more

The service has always been spot on, and anytime there has been an issue (once in 10 years of patronage) they fixed it on the spot. Have been a long time fan of j alex's food. My disappointment is with accessibility. They remodeled dining room years ago and made it a predominantly booth restaurant. There is a ramp to get to the level where the one accessible table exists. The ramp is next to the kitchen where servers are racing with plated food to get to the patrons. Then the one table is down a long row of tables. If a high chair is on the end of any booth the family has to move their child in order for the wheelchair to get through. We just went there tonight and found they remodeled again and now have made the accessible table bigger to seat 6 and every table near it seats 6. We had to ask a patron to stand so the wheelchair could get through. It is horribly embarrassing to be in a wheelchair and disrupt another table in order to get to our designated table. The bar area would be fine but only has bistro height tables. We try to go early in the evening since we know the barriers. We will probably take it off our list. It is hard to spend $75 on a meal for 2 with that type of dining room set up read more

We were all leaving after we paid the tickets that was giving to us ,They said we didn't pay for some or the meals only to find out they over charged me on a meal, and my poor brother finally just gave up and siad what do I need to do to just get out of this backward place.the manager didn't know what she was talking about asking me who order what item. Last I checked that was my job. We had a total of 10 adults and 3 kids maybe that to many people for this place. Bottom line service from the waitress who disappeared for about 20 min was awful then the train wreak of a manager was even worse .
