My wife had been coming here fairly regularly to get their roasted artichokes and wanted to try it for a full meal so we came in for her birthday dinner. Decent sized parking lot and we had no trouble getting a space. The ambiance is nice: well kept, nice booths, well lit, and neatly-dressed pleasant staff at the front. Our server (named Alexander, appropriately) was polite, funny, and attentive throughout service. He was great at explaining dishes and answering my wife's (rough estimate) 728 questions. Deviled egg appetizer was good. Both my wife's prime rib and my crispy chicken platter were well prepared. I really liked their coleslaw - it was very fresh and wasn't drowning in dressing or so sweet as to be a dessert. Came here for lunch on a Monday. Since it was lunch time, the lights were a little brighter than they are at dinner time. It is a classy atmosphere where you feel comfortable at the same time. We were greeted immediately and seated. Our server Brandon was very friendly, gave great recommendations and was attentive to make sure our drinks always remained full and fresh. We started with their daily appetizer special of calamari. It was truly the best I have ever had! It was so tender and the seasonings were absolute perfection. Once you actually drive back there, you see it's clearly a restaurant. The menu is fantastic and they have rotating specials too. There is something for everyone here. Plus, the service is great! And the atmosphere is inviting, a bit dark and dramatic. I enjoyed it. Everyone in my group enjoyed their meals, drinks, and dessert. First off, I'm a solid 4+ stars and I come here every chance I get. I'm really glad they changed the name back to the original J Alexanders, the whole Redlands thing didn't make sense. Management . . . Please note - put the chicken pasta soup back on the menu everyday. It's fantastic and I would order it every time I dined there. No reason to only offer it one day a week. They offer a full bar with several outstanding wines and craft beers. Relative to many other restaurants, their mark-up on the bottles of wine is not bad. It does seem to me that they have cut back on the menu options. I remember there being several more. I recently had their cheesesteak egg rolls which were fantastic as well as Alex's salad. Both portions were huge. As odd as it may sound, their chicken fingers are out of this world. Our server Charles was equally outstanding. Choice of 12oz or 16 oz and comes with mashed potatoes. I got a 12 oz with temp of medium and the temperature was on point! It looked pretty pink but was not oozing blood like medium rare might. The meat was very tender and the au jus added just the right enhancement of flavor and moistness. The mashed potatoes were excellent and had bits of potato that was not mashed all the way, really nice texture. I also got the grilled artichokes and it was deliciously garlicky and charred. I am used to going to J Alexanders up in Chicago where I'm from, so was happy to see one in Tampa. This is also one of my Mom's favorite restaurants, so we tend to drop-in about once a month for an obligatory order of artichokes. LOVE the ambiance here! It's almost like an old-school place, nice big comfy booths with a bit of a darker atmosphere. Waiters are usually really good and on-top of things. It's not a cheap place, but let me tell you their food is excellent! My "go to" order is the French Dip - it is absolutely delicious!!! And they've got the little shoestring fries which are my personal fave. Definitely try the artichokes as well, they are to die for. When I got the steak, it was rare and I got a loaded baked potato. They did take the steak back and said they would check on me in a couple minutes, but no one ever came back.
