From the initial reservation through OpenTable to my farewell goodbye to the wonderful staff, this restaurant exceeded all of my expectations. The food was outstanding, my waitress Shirley was incredible and it was a delight to be able to bless her with a fabulous tip. The assistant manager even came by and welcomed me since it was my first visit. I will make J Gilberts a regular stop in Overland Park, Kansas for fine dining. The ambience was subdued and made the evening with my date that much more delightful! The pricing was incredible, especially given the quality of the food and my Kansas City strip steak was off the chart awesome! Thanks to the staff and especially my new waitress friend Shirley! We went for a date night and the atmosphere was amazing. It was busy but not too loud. Our waiter Matt was amazing and made several great suggestions for our sides. My husband had the steak with truffle butter and added mushrooms. The steak was cooked perfectly and was juicy and tender. I had the scallops with lobster risotto. It was so light and buttery and the scallops were delicious. I also ordered a smoked old fashioned and it was amazing. Thank you Matt for making our evening amazing with your wonderful suggestions. We had heard many great things about J Gilbert's and finally gave it a try for Father's Day. We were sadly disappointed on so many aspects, that I'm not sure we'll try it again. We made reservations for 4, for Saturday before Father's Day. Upon arriving we dropped off my FIL and SIL at the door who were seated by the time we parked and went inside. We walked in, advising the host of this and asking if we could go to the table. There was nobody else waiting to be seated. Not a single person. She was extremely unfriendly and rude and told us we had to wait to be seated... After being seated for about 15 min, we were extremely warm- after asking the server , we found out their A/C was not working!! How inconsiderate can a restaurant be that your A/C is not working- you don't advise that at the door, and just expect people to sweat through dinner... literally hair pulled back, fanning ourselves, and sweating through dinner. It was 90°+ outside and extremely humid. This was extremely unprofessional and inappropriate by any restaurant to allow but let alone a restaurant of what I would expect higher standards. When it came time to order dinner, nearly an hour after arriving- we were advised 1 of their 2 specials (wagyu steak) was sold out. It's 6:15pm?? You're sold out of a special at 6:15pm... barely 2 hours into dinner?? 2 of us had to find something else to order quickly... The drinks were good but inconsistent. Old Fashioned's did not have cherries as they should. I had to ask for them. A 2nd old fashioned was delivered with vermouth in it... and was obviously terrible. The food was mediocre. Nothing to write home about. The lamb chops were good but the risotto was somewhat off. We probably won't return simply for the attitude we received at the door and the disregard for advising people of their A/C issue on a hot day. read more

Dear Manager or General Manager. A few misses last night. 1. Advertised Prime Rib Night. One night each week. How do run out of your featured entree at 6:35pm on Sunday? We came to your restaurant for this special night. We did order our's medium and at 6:15 we received an overcooked (grey) piece of meat. Notified the staff and they would replace it. Several minutes later was informed we are out of prime rib. How?! The restaurant was half full since our 5pm arrival. So assuming bad planning by the kitchen staff? We picked something else and you comp'd the dinner. Thank you but, running out at 6:35pm? 2. Yes it was hot outside, 100 degrees. But other restaurants have the ability to keep their customers comfortable. Why not J.Gilberts? It was as warm inside as the outdoor Kenny Chesney concert I attended the week before. Damp/wet shirts and shorts is not something I expected to experience at a premium sit-down restaurant. We did notify the staff and was informed that "yes, it's been hard to keep cool these hot days, the A/C isn't working as well it should". Multiple days(?) of the restaurant being "not cool" sounds like a choice by management. 3. (My opinion) $4.00 for a soft drink is understandable at a premium restaurant. $4.00 for a refill is NOT. Not sure who is being more petty, me or J.Gilberts. Dear manager, let us know when you are able to provide a more comfortable (non-sauna) environment and we will return. read more

Our experience was pleasant throughout all phases. The food was delicious. The service was outstanding. Michael F., did a tremendous job of making my wife's birthday dinner a success. He, along with Stacie and at least 3 other members of the staff, made a point of swinging by and wishing her a happy birthday and make certain she was enjoying the evening. The ambiance was very warm and inviting. We had requested a place in the restaurant that would be more quiet and they provided just that. I have difficulty finding restaurants with this level of service since COVID. I strongly recommend giving this place a try. read more

Happy Hour with my Girlfriend! We selected this place because the deals were unbeatable. All their cocktails are $8.50 from 4:00-6:30. I had a lavender drop, which I did like, but thought the blueberry stoli was a bit too much with the lavender. I love botanical cocktails. My husband and I celebrated our 5th anniversary last night and went all out. For starters we had the bread and shrimp Durango, it was delicious and I highly recommend dipping the bread in the sauce! We both got the prix fixe menu with crab bisque, filet and scallops/mashed potatoes/cream corn & he got the lamb/mushroom risotto/mashed potatoes, we also got a lobster tail and crab cake! For dessert he had the cheesecake and I had the cream brûlée. The service was phenomenal, they gave us complimentary champagne with our dessert! The crab bisque was a perfect appetizer along with the shrimp. My filet was cooked perfectly, the corn was one of the best sides I've ever had, the lobster was slightly over cooked but the flavor made up for it and the lamb and risotto were perfectly seasoned and cooked. They say first impressions are everything and it rings true for eating establishments. Hubby and I visited for our one year anniversary on December 19, 2021. Though this was quite some time ago, I will not get over the first few seconds of our visit. A tepid greeting: Upon arrival, we greeted the hostess and mentioned a reservation. One wished us a happy anniversary. The other hostess was quite bothered that we had even walked in, and made that very apparent when she sat us at our booth. It was very unwelcoming, despite the slightly warmer greeting from the first hostess. From previous reviews I read, this is an issue. It's a Vibe: Our visit was around Christmastime, so the soft holiday music and fireplace were a nice touch to the low-light ambiance. For a Sunday evening, the crowd was more seasoned, which I enjoyed. A fellow Yelper said this establishment is mix between J. Alexander and Houston's and I would say that is spot on. Customer service: Our server was patient, polite, and offered great recommendations. I enjoyed his warm personality and genuine nature. He was not overbearing and made sure to refill our waters often. He definitely made up for the poor service from the hostess stand. Food quality: Previous reviews mentioned the steak temperature and I agree. I ordered my steak well and it was a little pink for my liking. The flavor was decent but does not reheat well at home. The bread was a touch too hard but it was still delicious. The green beans were cooked and seasoned perfectly. The dessert was amazing and paired nice with the ice cream. Kudos for the food presentation. Get ready to pay: Yes, this place is expensive. Our bill was over $100 plus tip for two steak dinners and a glass of wine. Previous Yelpers have spent more after purchasing seafood and apps. Overall: I am on the fence on another visit, as it is hard to find a good steak in the city. J. Gilbert's was decent, but seemingly hit or miss on customer service and the food based on other Yelpers. For me, our visit was a 7.5/10. Ronald was our server, he was super tentative, and really nice. Gave us an in depth overview of the menu. The lighting was really dark, it was nice and romantic, so even though we were sitting in the middle of the room, it felt like we still had a lot of privacy. The brick inside the building was super pretty. I got the 6oz sirloin with the glazed shrimp. I wish it would have come with more shrimp since they only give you three. But they were really good! The steak was a little underdone for my liking but had a great Smokey flavor. My fiancés baked potato was THE BEST baked potato we've ever had. He got butter and bacon on it, and it just had such an awesome flavor, both of us couldn't put a finger on the flavor, but I think it came from the bacon. It was amazing. They also gave us a free slice a cake since we were celebrating our birthdays! The espresso martini is to die for!! All in all, I would give this place a 4.5 but since there is no half's I did 5 stars. The only con was the small portion of shrimp and the underdone steak. read more

2nd visit 5/24/21 for a special occasion: what a treat!!! We came for the last few minutes of happy hour, and we made the most of it. So we weren't very hungry when it came to meal time. Best food to recommend: Pretzel crusted onions rings - very original! The smoked, peppery butter given with their sourdough bread - rich with flavor 6 oz Filet Mignon - the softest, butteriest steak EVER (is that even a word??) Roasted potatoes - slightly over salted Pineapple martini - I sipped on it all night. So amazing. Creme brûlée - incredibly sweet, with a perfect crunch on top. Chocolate cake - rich and delicious. Wow. Jaw dropping. Even the Caesar salad was fabulous!! We came to celebrate, and celebrate we did! Unfortunately, I'll be feeling all this sweet and rich food tonight and tomorrow since I eat pretty clean, but it was WORTH IT!! YOLO baby. I feasted on an extremely reasonably priced Pris Fixe meal of wedge salad, filet mignon, Mac n cheese and creamed corn with bacon, topped off by a scrumptious crème brûlée dessert. But the food was not the only outstanding part of the meal. Our server, Mei Li, was attentive, thoughtful, professional, friendly, and competent.
