This was a surprise. My wife had some tests done across the street and we were hungry for breakfast. We'd seen this place a number of times and it looked like a converted "big chain" restaurant. Yelp 3 stars "eh it's just ok" Living in Reno for a little over 8 years now. I finally made my way over to Jack's coffee shop. This place has always been on my bucket list of places to try since it has been recommended by a few coworkers. The reason why it took me this long is because those coworkers recommendations haven't all been reliable and Yelp has it as a mediocre 3ish stars with plenty of mixed reviews. So here I am. I ordered the hungry meal chicken fried steak that came with potatoes, biscuits and gravy and of course eggs. When I go to any breakfast joint this is usually my go to order to rate the place. So how did it rank? Good but not great, definitely I have had better, but this isn't the worst. The country fried steak did lack seasoning, which I'm not the type of person to salt my food to begin with so it might need some salt. The gravy wasn't anything special, pretty bland and the biscuits were dry. The potatoes could've been elevated with chopped green onions. Overall I probably wouldn't come back but props for them for expanding and having several locations. read more

Off the freeway we saw Denny and was planning to stop for breakfast but when we got there, Denny looks pack and saw this place across the street and decided to just give it a try. OMG!!! right decision it was. This place is so good and the portions is huge. The services were wonderful. The waitress, Jenny, wonderfully awesome. Will come back for sure. I worked here for almost a month, and my experience as an employee was disappointing. I was fired without any prior notice and wasn't informed until the day of. I was told other waitresses had complaints, but none of that was ever communicated to me beforehand, so I had no chance to address anything. The overall lack of communication and transparency from management made the environment feel unprofessional. read more

This is a solid, American diner coffee place. Nothing fancy but solid breakfast food and a really nice team. It also didn't have a long line to wait which is nice and they were really attentive with the service and coffee refills. I would come back for a low key breakfast. read more

I can not write about the food. We never got served. I am a single father who brought my son out for a special breakfast. After being sat, we were forgotten. 20 mins later I called a server over and we got drinks. 30 minutes after that, we got up to leave. Turns out the server we were supposed to have was the manager. She offered no apology and only said "I'll take your order now". She ignored us to serve 2 other tables of more people. 2 groups that arrived after us. Love this little diner. They are the closest thing to the diners I grew up with in the 60's-70's. Their portions are so large my husband and I usually share a plate. Love the French dip-it's old school and the fries that accompany it are always crispy and perfectly seasoned. The breakfasts there are outstanding too. Was really looking forward to having a big breakfast. Ordered one of my favorite meals that is commonly found in most places. Country fried stake and eggs. Going to be honest I can eat a lot and am grateful to have the luxury of eating out. But I just couldn't, this food was so lacking in taste and the texture was just off. I didn't want to put another single bite into my stomach for the sake of that being apart of my chemical make up. Hit and Miss.... I've had this place a few times and it's either really good or really bad !! No in between (the potatoes are always the best). Let me tell you about this last time I got food from here To-Go. I ordered the chicken fried chicken and eggs. It came to $17 :-/. I got home (2 mins away) and started to eat. The potatoes were great the eggs cooked perfect, but that chicken fried chicken literally taste like concrete!!!! It's freaking gross I'm not even sure what piece of chicken this is but it's horrible. So eat at your own risk. I hate that I spent my $17 on this crap. read more

We came here a little after 11am on Memorial Day. It was pretty busy but we were seated right away. We have been here before as well as the Sparks location. They both seem very consistent. Our drink orders were taken and we looked at the menu. My wife said she already knew she wanted "The Works" Belgium waffle and bacon. I decided on the pastrami sandwich. Our food was delivered in a timely manner and looked really tasty. I'm a big fan of pastrami sandwiches. Both of us were extremely satisfied and I even had half a sandwich left. I don't think their pastrami is as tender as some other places I've tried but it's still really good. Also, the pastrami sandwich had mustard on it which was not stated in the menu. The food and service are good, prices are decent and there's a nice selection. We will be back to Jack's. read more

One word. Chilaquiles. Review over. ... No but really, the menu at Jacks Cafe is really awesome and I love finding options like this, so when I saw it on the "At the Border" section I was pretty excited. Also something notable from that section was the "Rio Grande" which is cheese enchiladas with sausage and also sounds amazing. I couldn't decide so I asked the waitress who told me the Chilaquiles were hard to beat. Now back to those Chilaquiles...tortilla chips cooked in their salsa, topped in cheese with eggs and crispy potatoes. Some of the chips have crispiness still from the baked on cheese while others are soft and smothered in a super flavorful salsa. The eggs are on the side which when I make Chilaquiles at home I usually scramble the eggs into the chips...therefore I want to try this again, but with scrambled eggs and mix it all together with the chips. Still, it was really good. Finally, per Michael T's recommendation, we tried the "scones". I was expecting an English style scone, but was surprised with delicious deep fried dough drizzled In honey and smothered in butter! It reminds me of the "donuts" my mother made us growing up. She would fry biscuit dough with a hole cut in the middle, then cover it in powdered sugar and gave them to us as donuts. These tasted like that. And they're super delicious! This was my first time here. I usually take a trip to Reno a few times every year and always look for a new place to eat. My first choice was busy with nowhere to park so this was a spur of the moment choice. I ordered the chicken fried steak & eggs with home fries (supposed to be similar to hash browns but thicker). While the flavor was okay I didn't care for the chicken fried steak as it was too thick for my liking and not very tender. I also like the breading to be crispy on the outside which it wasn't. I also didn't like the "hash browns". The best part of my meal was the side pancake that I ordered instead of the toast. The service was good too. Friendly and prompt. read more

I needed a quick in and out place this morning and obviously great food. Jack's is located on N. Wells @ 6th St, just south of I-80 with plenty of parking. Upon entering I sat myself at the counter and was immediately contacted by a staff member, the bus person took my drink order and quickly returned with both. Otherwise the service was subpar, being at the counter all servers pass you, thus I thought I would be able to order quickly as I knew what I wanted. Unfortunately, after several minutes, I had to get the attention of a server to place my order. I noted my order was quickly prepared and then just sat there until finally another server just standing at the window of the kitchen realized it was mine. When I arrived I had 40 minutes, by the time I got my food, I had 12 minutes, they weren't that busy, so not sure what happened. The food was awesome, I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs, the steak is traditional, fresh and really good, the gravy was also fresh and full of flavor. The potatoes and eggs were also really good and would highly recommend trying it. If not for the poor service, except the bus person who again was attentive, professional and prompt, I would have give them a 5 star. read more

Came for breakfast with the family. All the meals were pretty good for the most part. My only complaint is the amount of beef/beans in the taco salad is very minimal. Run of the mill breakfast.. but theres definitely nothing wrong with that. This is my go to when I need a cheap quick breakfast. Definitely a step or two better than Denny's across the street. They have your food done quick, I have never had any mistakes, and the employees are all nice and take care of you. The only downside is the location.. I wouldn't take anyone with me to this place. I gotta say, when my colleague asked for a work/lunch meeting at Jack's, I thought to myself, "oh man, I'm about to ruin my diet today." So I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the wide variety of salad selections. It was an easy choice: the fajita chicken salad. Fresh avocado, grilled onions, pico de gallo and sour cream(okay, so ruined the diet a tad). It was delicious!! My colleague was ravished so she got the country fried steak and loved every minute of it. The service is super friendly and accommodating. I can definitely understand when your demographic might be watching their sodium intake, but I hate having to season my own food at a restaurant. There's a little something for everyone here, including their house made 'scones' which are basically discs of fried dough, unlike the traditional scone, but really good with butter and jam, although a little greasy at times. In a former Carrow's restaurant on the corner of 6th and Wells now sits Jack's Cafe #2. Jack's is a beloved breakfast spot in Sparks, which has now made its Reno debut, and they're doing a fantastic job. While I never thought of visiting this place when it was the former restaurant, as Jack's it now has instant appeal, and I'm so glad I made the decision to pop in. I scoped out Yelp to see what to order, and immediately I discovered their "scones". As it turns out, they're not scones at all, and I am not complaining about that. Scones are supposed to be like sweet biscuits with a flaky dough. These are fried pieces of dough that slightly puff in the fryer and are then served with butter and honey for you to top how you like them. If I were naming them, I'd call em sopapillas, but I guess "scone" is a word more Americans understand. For breakfast I order up the country bacon and eggs, which came with delicious and crispy home fries. The country bacon is something I've ordered at Sparks Coffee Shop, and it's a bit saltier and meatier than regular bacon. I throw a lil syrup on top for good measure, and it's a great breakfast. Service was signature diner perfection. Coffee, water, and juices never went empty. Servers were constantly circling to make sure we had everything, and they were incredibly friendly. I was traveling for work when I decided to stop by this place for breakfast. The food was good. My family and I ate and the check was for the amount of 148.32. As I was paying, I asked the cashier if they offered a military discount. She said yes, let me add it. I handed her my card and she handed me the receipt to sign. The total amount was 147.00. I was a little shocked when I saw the amount. I asked her again if they offered the military discount. She said, yes we took it off one of your side orders of pancakes. I told her, you guys took off 1.00 as a military discount.. I was expecting maybe 5.00 or 4.00 dollars. Not one dollar. I am in the Airforce and I have never had someone offer a discount of less then 1% percent be taken off as a discount. read more

How do we go about reviewing a business like Jack's Cafe? Foodie version: After a quick overnighter in San Francisco and some mind blowing dim sum, we needed to beat the snow and got over the hill in short order. The building is in an old chain restaurant. Virtually nothing has been changed from the previous ownership save the branding being taken down. It's all a little worse for the wear of many years of being in business. The food is standard diner fare. Nothing surprising or even mildly exciting on the menu. It's all pretty straightforward Breakfast/Brunch/Lunch offerings. Service was quick and the food came out surprisingly fast, which suggests that nothing is truly made to order aside from the eggs. There are no hashed browns on the menu, a disappointment to be honest. The prices were reasonable for the part of town it is in. Parking was plentiful even if was a little complicated getting back on the freeway. Yelper version: Man, this place rocks! We had been driving for a number of hours and didn't want the hassle of trying to find a place too far from the freeway on the way home. Jack's fit that bill just perfect and we hadn't been there yet. Double win! We parked in the back and made our way in. Flashbacks to the days that this used to be a Carrows. I remember having many meals here with my friends and family. It hasn't changed much since then, but when you are hungry, it doesn't really matter much. The place is clean and the service was prompt, what more could you ask for? Oh yeah. Good food is what you could ask for, and here they didn't disappoint. I knew what I was getting into, it's a diner that serves breakfast and lunch. The menu has a pretty sizable selection of the usual suspects. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and my wife ordered the Benedict. Both came out quickly and were as ordered. I will say that I was a bit disappointed that I didn't get the "Jack's chicken fried steak" I had gotten a few years ago at another location. But this one was good, Schnitzel style and covered in good gravy. I was also surprised that they covered the country potatoes with the gravy. Next time if I order it I will keep the potatoes clean. They were just the right crispy. The prices were great. It's always nice to see a place be successful while still keeping the food affordable. This is in the building Carrows used to be in. The building could use a little love. We were warming greeted and seated very quickly. Our waitress did not seem very attentive. She was kind and quick. We did ask for water twice and I think she may have forgotten. The busboy was kind, energetic, friendly. When he passed by we asked him for water, he responded with a cheerful "certainly" and brought us our water. His name was Fernando. The restaurant was clean. Our food arrived quickly. My husband had the cheese omelet with hash browns. I had a senior special plate. It was biscuits and gravy with 2 pieces of bacon or 2 pieces of sausage. I had one of each and eggs. I got my gravy on the side. Was it the best biscuits and gravy I have ever had. No. But it was darn tasty. The eggs were scrambled and yummy. How do you go wrong with bacon or sausage. They were both good. For the cost and taste it rates a 4. Upon leaving Fernando brought my glasses which I had left at the table. Thanks Fernando! You rock!!! Went in and ordered chicken fried steak they gave me a sausage patty and eggs. Their blueberry pancakes were disappointing. Just blueberries thrown on the top. I called and told them and was instructed to bring it back. I was already in bed and comfortable. She said well the waiter said u looked at it. (I have been up 20 hours and only thing i saw waa white eggs that i salted and peppered the meat was hiding under it and thpught nothing of it cause gravy was white and it didnt think anything of it, I wasn't trying to check if the order was wrong it was the last thing on my mind) Then they said to save it and they will replace it. At this point im tired hungry and fed up. Such an awesome breakfast! Great service and wonderful food! I had the Joe's Scramble and it was awesome! I threw some green Tabasco on there (not every restaurant has the green) . The English muffin was big and yummy w/ apple cinnamon jam! The hubby had wonderful chicken fried steak and eggs w plenty of delicious country gravy! They even had hazelnut creamer fir the coffee.
