Hubby R and I stopped here for our midday meal today - he ordered breakfast and I ordered lunch. That's already a bonus! We had gotten dinner delivered from here once (door-dash or uber eats or something) and it was outstanding, so we wanted to try it fresh. Greeted and seated immediately - we arrived after the typical lunch rush I think. Our server, German, according to the receipt, was spot on. Refills a plenty, dirty dishes cleared and most importantly PIE received to go! R ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs - eggs soft scrambled, with home fries and sub a pancake for the toast. The pancake was almost as big as the plate, so A+ there. Slight bummer because they use individual country crock "original buttery spread" instead of butter, but that's just our preference. The chicken fried steak was pretty big - took up 1/3 of the plate and very tasty. The home fries were perfectly chunky, browned in spots, with chunks of onion and green pepper - just like they're supposed to be! The eggs were cooked properly and he ate and ate and ate and still didn't make a dent. The pancake was very good - I snuck a small bite and it really had a great flavor - not your standard mix-pancake, I don't think. Unless they have a better mix than I do! I ordered the croissant sandwich, which is basically a club sandwich by another name. Turkey, ham, bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo - all the right ingredients - served on a croissant. I picked tater tots as my side because you can never have too many tots. So, the croissant was warm to the touch when I picked it up, but the inside ingredients were cold....I guess that's how a club sandwich would be if you took a bite immediately after it was assembled, right? Anyway, when I took a bite, the crosisant wasn't flaky or buttery tasting at all. So, always the detective, I took the top off and it looked like uhhhh bread....no flaky layers, no buttery goodness, almost like a bread-biscuit hybrid, shaped like a crescent. So, more detecting going on, I took pictures so you can see what I mean. I told the waiter that this was the weirdest croissant I'd ever had and he offered to swap out my lunch. I thanked him and said just bring me a piece of bread and I'll fix it up! He did, I did and I ate almost the whole thing. Problem solved, but I am still perplexed about the consistency of that baked good. For the grand finale, a piece of strawberry pie accompanied us home and remains in the fridge, to be our bedtime snack. Overall, pretty solid food, good service and quite affordable at only $25 for the two of us for lunch, each with a drink. Hope this helps! read more

I was excited to try this place as the reviews were pretty good. Unfortunately, I was disappointed in the food. My pancake was served to me cold and it was extremely dry. I asked for sausage but bacon is what was brought out however, they were quick to fix it but by the time they brought my plate back, my eggs and hashbrowns had gotten cold. The hashbrowns were not fully cooked so some of them were a little hard, the eggs were overcooked and just didn't have that fluffiness you look for in scrambled eggs. The tea and coffee were very good and though we didn't try any of their homemade pies, they certainly looked delicious. I will give them another try, maybe the lunch is better. read more

We wanted to try a different spot for breakfast and this place is always busy. They boast home-cooked meals and delicious pies. Situated close to the street and it takes up what looks like 3 store fronts in a shopping center. The tables are long but not very wide (that's my opinion), we had to move all the condiments around to have enough room for all of our plates. The waiter and the staff were very nice. The pies are right there when you walk in, so it's hard to miss them. We didn't try any during this visit. They did look very good though. They also make muffins, biscuits and cinnamon rolls. Our children split a regular stack of pancakes with bacon which they devoured (they're easy to please). The "kid cups" we asked for were much too big for them so we had to get an additional cup to divide the rest of their O.J. My wife got the Eggs Benedict with cheese grits. It came with a nice sized slice of ham as well. She asked for her eggs to be poached hard. It's weird, but one egg was poached correctly, but the other was super runny. Her grits were also very watery and she didn't even touch them. I got the croissant french toast with eggs, sausage and bacon. We also got bananas and whipped cream. I had to remind her to bring the whipped cream as well. It didn't come out right away. The whipped cream isn't from a can. It has a nice thick consistency, and wasn't runny. The croissant french toast had a great taste, but the batter wasn't soaked all the way through leaving me with quite a few bites that were dry that I had to soak some syrup and whipped cream in. The taste was good though. I would go back though! Try something different, and definitely get some pie! read more

Never felt so unwelcome in my life. Stopped by for dinner today and I was the only one waiting. Three other people came in and the waiter went around me to sit them and he didn't come back. waitress said that he may have thought that I was door dash. I don't know why? maybe because I am a black man?? The sign may not be posted but the mindset is alive and well. i should have recognized that the pies in the desert case were "white only pies". I'm telling you I love the breakfasts at this place, especially the great omelettes. My favorite is the Tommy which has sausage and Swiss cheese. The homemade salsa is amazing with the eggs. The pancakes are huge and fluffy and the waffles are amazingly good. My mom is partial to the hash browns but I like the home fries with bell peppers and onions. read more

Never again. I called in an order to go. Tried to use my 20% off coupon from entertainment.com and staff told me that coupon could only be used for dine in. I told them I knew some entertainment.com coupons stated "dine in only " but this particular coupon did not state that. Staff said that did not matter -and told me to visit the"rules" at entertainment.com. I did look at the website when I got home and called jayjays to tell them the website did not say anything in the rules specifically about jayjays Basically I was then told the owners at jayjays told the staff to not accept coupons for to go orders - that it didn't matter what was/was not printed on the coupon. That was it. No apology. No acknowledgement that they had just decided to not accept coupons on to go orders. I will not be going back. Horrible customer service. read more

I myself am a server and I typically don't leave poor reviews but I received terrible service at this restaurant. As I walk in I say that I would like to dine in and the server asked me my name and I told her and she starts looking around all confused, I said oh! I'm wanting to dine in. And she's like oh? Okay then takes me to a table. She didn't greet herself or anything but asked me what I want so I ordered some coffee and told her I needed more time. I wanted hazelnut creamer with my coffee but they were out and she didn't tell me that so she gave me French vanilla but I didn't think anything of it and just drank it anyway. Then I ordered the country breakfast meal I told her I wanted both sausage and bacon and I wanted cheese on my eggs. She's says sure I can do that. When I get my food there is no sausage or cheese on the plate and I tried to stop her and tell her but she just walked off without asking if I need anything else with it. A manager or someone walks past and ask if I need anything and I tell him what happened, he brings me one piece of sausage and takes my plate and puts cheese on top of it. I didn't hear back from the server til I finished my food. The only redeeming quality of this restaurant was the coffee, I would not recommend djning in here but to go orders May be a safe bet. This is the first time in my life that I've only given someone a $5 tip. Active listening and attentiveness is important to me. read more

Great breakfast place. We've been going to this location for several years now yet only for breakfast. I always get the short stack combo (2 pancakes, 2 eggs, 2 bacon or sausage) and the other half normally gets the waffle combo (waffle, 2 eggs, 2 bacon or sausage). The prices are in the $6.00 range and the portions are more than I should eat. The service has always been good everytime we go there. The only problem with the service is that they are a little to attentive on drink refills sometimes. (LET MY COFFEE COOL OFF A LITTLE BEFORE YOU WARM IT UP) :) If that's the only flaw I've found, then I guess the're doing a bang up job. Give them a try and I'm sure you'll enjoy. Tip: For some reason the rest of the area has not discovered this place yet so there are no lines to get in even on the weekends. Darn, I guess I should have kept my mouth shut. read more

Not fancy, just neat and tidy. Nothing too spicy on the menu. Mostly burgers, sandwiches and dinner plates with one meat and two side orders, served with cornbread and a yeast roll. It's like a Luby's or similar cafeteria where you sit down to order instead of going through a line. The food looks similar, too. The clientele looks like who you'd expect. More older than younger, except for the grandkids in high chairs. The food is OK. The best things to me were the yeast rolls and the pies. If you're looking for the kind of food Grandma used to make, and Grandma wasn't a great cook, you'll be happy here. read more

Clean place with friendly staff. The service was slow for being so few people in the restaurant. I ordered a cheeseburger with coleslaw, iced tea, and coconut cream pie. Everything looked great. My pastor's wife recommended coming here instead of the Jay Jays on Fielder for breakfast! I'm not a very picky eater but I thought the food was so so, not particularly memorable or incredible - I got the breakfast platter with scrambled eggs, homefries, which is cut potatoes and scattered green bellpeppers, and a pancake. Potatoes were slightly overdone, charred on one side so I spent some time picking that off many potatoes. Pancake was mildly warm and didn't seem like it was just made. The staff here is always friendly and works with you to fix your meal as you like it. Busy little cafe with repeat customers that are like family. Food is great and fresh. This is a simple, unpretentious diner that prepares and serves good food at reasonable prices with curteous service. I particularly enjoy breakfast there, specifically I like the Fiesta Omlette. Besides a good breakfast, they have a large selection of pies. I haven't tried them all yet, but the lemon, coconut, and peach pies were each quite tasty and enjoyable to me and my friends and family. My husband and I tried Jay Jay's for the first time this morning. We really enjoyed the simplicity of the cafe. We were seated immediately and greeted promptly. I ordered the Mexican and my husband ordered the German pancakes. I substituted egg whites and it was great. The server was very attentive, but somewhere during our meal we received a new server, which was odd since he never said the reason and we were almost done with our meal. What can I say.... This is a cute dining establishment. They make all of their pies homemade, which look absolutely delicious! In trying to find a good breakfast place that's NOT a chain restaurant, I think I found a gem. I had the German Pancake combo, and I must say... I really like theirs better than Ol South in fort worth. The pancake was the size of a diner plate,light and fluffy. The bacon was crisp and meaty. I've been eating at this location of Jay Jay Cafe for several years. In the past, you could always count on well prepared food in a mostly clean environment with more hit than miss service. The last two trips to Jay Jay have changed my mind about the place and I will never eat at Jay Jay Cafe again. I don't know exactly when management/ownership changed but in my opinion this place is nowhere near what it used to be. The chicken fried steak used to be a nice piece of tenderized and hand breaded steak, fried on the flat top and simply one of the best in Arlington. My last trip there I ordered the CFS and got some sort of pre-made, not hand breaded mystery meat. I say mystery meat because it was a mystery to me what kind of (if any) meat it was. It was white and mealy inside with a texture that (to me) resembled cheap ground meat and cereal filler mixed and formed into a patty that was somewhat the same shape as you would expect a chicken fried steak to be. I asked the waitress if they had changed the CFS, she says she didn't know whilst sporting a deer in the headlights look. I asked for a check and was at the checkout counter and the cashier asked how my dinner was. I told her it sucked since they changed the CFS to something that tastes like crap. She admitted a lot of people had been complaining about it. Another worker came over and said they can't get "the good meat" like they used to anymore. Really ? Lot's of other places serve CFS that is hand breaded and made with "real" meat. The pie here used to be a real treat too, but, in the last year or so it always tastes old to me. Almost like they don't rotate their pies often enough. I can see wanting to cut costs, but serving (in my opinion) inferior or old food is NEVER going to lead to success. To top it off, I ordered a cup of coffee to go with dinner and the cup they served it in had some crusty residue around the rim. I asked for a different cup and the replacement had even more crusty residue on it. No idea what it was, but it grossed me out to the point I'm never going to eat here again. In my opinion, you can find MUCH better food (now) for the money in Arlington. On a positive note, the service was somewhat OK if you overlook the little issue about "I don't know" when asked about if the CFS had changed recently. I ate here a couple of weeks ago and the CFS was OK then. The place (in my opinion) isn't as clean as it used to be in years past and the quality of food is declining fast. Give one of the other diners in the area a try... could they be more disappointing ? Not in my mind. read more

Been there about 10 times, now. The menu is basic down home, and some good comfort food. I come here when I want some good vegetables. My favorite entree is the salisbury steak. The waiters/waitresses are attentive, and the food comes quickly. I've never had to wait to be seated. I haven't tried the breakfast menu yet, but it looks good. I think they offer breakfast food all day, if you want a late breakfast. They also have a big variety of delicious pies. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that I think a place should be top of the line for that, and Jay Jay's decor is dated and a bit worn. I usually love this place but I brought my family from out of town here and it was horrible. We waited for over 45min for our food and they weren't even that busy. After we paid, we went to the car and my nephew had smashed his finger in the door. We went inside to get ice and the lady at the front asked us what we needed it for. After we told her she said "hold on let me take this order" very rudely. Then, another man came and asked us what we needed. We told him and he said "ok let me finish this and I will." This is one of my favorite cafe in Arlington. The staff are always sweet ad friendly. I always come in for the pecan chicken which is the best chicken I ever tasted. The time I came here the waiter recommend it and it is the only dish I get because it just doesn't get old and it always taste great. I eat here as often as I can. I don't happen to live close-by or I probably would be a regular. I have only been disappointed once, but the waitress more than made up for it by giving me a complementary slice of homemade pie of my choosing. My favorite is the coconut cream pie. All the pies are made on the premises and the slices are generous. Breakfast is good here, however, I usually come here for lunch specials. All entrees come with homemade yeast rolls and cornbread muffins. Many of the lunch and dinner specials also come with a slice of pie of some kind. Most meals are under $ 10. This is a family run cafe. The waitresses are helpful and friendly. My favorite waitress is Susan. She is exceptional and very delightful to talk to. If you like home cooking this is a good place to get your comfort food fix. read more

Ordered biscuits with sausage gravy, two eggs and wheat toast. Everything came pretty quickly. The biscuits were HUGE. The bowl of sausage gravy was HUGER (if that's a word)! You know when you make biscuits at home and you use a little extra flour when you roll them out to keep them from sticking to the board? Well, if you use way too much flour, the biscuits don't taste like biscuits...they taste like a bag of flour. That's exactly what happened here this morning. They were not good. The accompanying sausage gravy was obviously from a mix (probably Sysco) and had cut-up chunks of sausage patties in it. It was good but not great. I like the sausage crumbled a little more. The eggs and toast were perfect! My waitress Jo#6 seemed to spend a lot of time talking to other staff behind the counter and checking her phone. My water glass was empty about halfway through my meal, but no one bothered to offer a refill until I was finished. I really needed more water to wash down the floury biscuits! After I had finished, I sat for several minutes surrounded by empty, dirty plates. Another waitress finally asked to clear them for me. Yes, please. The place was clean and mostly "tidy". I may give them the benefit of the doubt and try them again...perhaps lunch sometime. I do see lots of potential for a better experience next time. read more

As long as you put Jay Jays in the right catagory, it is excellent. Of course, you're not going to celebrate an anniversary here, but for a $5 breakfast or a $7 lunch, it is hard to beat. I've been trying to find meat loaf like my Mom used to make for about 25 years. This place comes the closest, and I've had much more expensive meat loaf at "fine restaurants", as sort of a novelity. And, for breakfast, it is half a step obove IHOP, but smaller, less crowded, less rushed, and friendly service. Oh, I almost forgot the pies.
