My boyfriend and I were already in this plaza, so we decided to see what restaurants seemed appealing to us. We could not see the interior due to the opaque windows, so we were iffy if we should eat there. We looked it up on yelp, and since it had good reviews, we decided to eat here. Once we walked in, we were surprised (in a good way) by how the interior really gave off Japan vibes. The ramen is pretty affordable compared to usual ramen places (most bowls here were about less than $12.95), which is nice. It's also very flavorful. The workers were very friendly. I had a few items delivered and thought most of the food was okay but the packaging was terrible. They placed a hot curry container on top of a thin lid for the Ramen soup container. The container above tore right through the thin lid below and it was a mess to clean up. Why would they do this? The katsu curry and grounded chicken was good (not enough meat though). The Tokyo Yatai ramen was just okay. The packaging was not the driver's fault. I'll be back and maybe skip the ramen or try a different one. read more

This place reminds me of my visit to Japan. The interior is old school with old pictures and old souvenirs. The design attracts the older crowd while also bringing in a younger crowd. One thing about this place is that it does not serve any alcoholic beverage. However, you can bring your own drinks as long as you show them the receipt. They will provide cups if you ask. My party ordered the shellfish ramen and I myself got it with the butter. The butter adds a deeper creaminess but if you want the good seafood stock I would just get the regular shellfish ramen. It's pretty hardy and if you want to get more you can add a combo of fried rice and gyoza for about an extra 2-4 dollars. read more

This was my favorite little spot. It's located in a little shopping strip shared by other restaurants, cafes, and more. Off of Western & 182nd. Parking can be a little tight. I came in and was greeted by a very nice waitress. I told her I would like to order to go. I normally dine in or call in my orders but this was spontaneous, and we all wanted our Fav ramen. I ordered my food, a spicy miso ball, fried rice, 5 sides of flavored egg. I was told it would take a bit so I gave my phone number so they could let me know when it was really. It took about 30 minutes and I came back. I grabbed all of my food, and went home after I paid. I was very disappointed with the price. They charged me a service fee of $15. I've been coming here forever and never ever have I been charged a fee. I signed it cause I had my kids home from college that was waiting for me. They never goofed my order before and I didn't get the spicy ball I ordered (Wasn't on the receipt too) and was short an egg. No utensils, no condiments. The soup wasn't on point. What happened? Authentic Japanese Ramen! Located in the center of a small plaza on the corner of 186th & Western Ave surrounded by other local asian food joints. Red and white sign! Bit of chatting at the door before i was greeted but once i was "noticed" i was quickly sat and served iced water. Menu is modern and enticing. Ordered Tokyo-Yatai (Tokyo Shoyu), added on the Grated Yam & SpicyCodRoe bowl for only $3! i love Gyoza so i splurged on the $7 UFO gyoza. Ramen broth was savory and flavorful. Chasu was on the traditional side of tender and less fatty pieces, which i personally prefer. Lots of ramens today usually have a fattier pork belly or other fatty cut of meat which Im sure most others enjoy. Ramen bowl could have been plated better (imo not up to Japanese standard) i dont believe kitchen staff are all Nihonjin (which is fine) but even the importance of presentation is within Japanese culture. That contributed to .5 of my 4/5 rating. Which leads to the other .5 to take away the 1 star, was the gyoza was more of an aesthetic, over flavor and bite. Top was crispy but below i had a few pieces (at least 3/6) that were soggy and unappetizing ( possibly cooked too quickly on high heat). Lastly, the grated yam bowl is def an acquired taste. Grated yam becomes sticky and a bit slimy with comparison to natto (fermented soybeans) and the dish is also served cold, so unless you are familiar with these textures and flavors id possibly go for another bowl. I enjoyed it but was too stuffed from other 2 dishes to polish it off. Overall service was pleasant and quick, food was enjoyable and amid the covid restrictions i enjoyed a peaceful meal in Torrance, CA. Will be back for the ramen if im in the area again! read more

Been coming to Jidaiya for a few years now, and easily it's still my favorite ramen spot in California. Their Miso ramen is my go to, but their Tokyo-Yatai, Yokohama Tonkatsu and Jidaiya Dip are also all amazing. The ufo gyoza is a silly concept, but the gyoza themselves are amazing and worth it! We bring all our friends and family to this spot when we want that taste of Japan. We've been to Japan a lot for work, tried some of the best Japan has had to offer, and Jidaiya really helps us when we are craving our favorites from Japan! We've never had to wait long for a table, service is quick and polite. The prices are reasonable and I have nothing bad to say. Skip the long wait at those trendy places, and come get an authentic taste of Japan! read more

For me, my go-to is always Yamadaya on Crenshaw/182nd and if it's REAL late, then I go to Umenoya. It's always hard to venture out to try new ramen, but I'm glad my friends chose to stop by here for dinner. The decor at the place is nice too! I've stopped by here on two occasions. Sorry, no photo on my first visit, but I got the karaage and spicy miso, which were great! Karaage was tender and came piping hot! Spicy miso was just right on the spiciness! My second visit here was getting the regular tonkotsu ramen, which was great too! After I ordered, I noticed how well received the Tokyo Yatai ramen was so I will have to get that my next trip here! Ramen was ok, nothing special. We can't eat pork and asked if we could substitute pork for anything else (eg, an extra egg), we were told "no" and told not to ask again. This was disappointing as pork was the main "topping" on all the ramen, and an extra egg did not seem to be an unreasonable replacement. This would be fine too, except for the restaurant policy which says it is run on a flexible policy (see attached photo, and especially the paragraph on "putting ourselves in the customers shoes"). Why have a policy like that if the staff will do the exact opposite? I forgot to put the pickle slices into my burger... They were yummy on their own too. We also shared a bowl of their Tonkotsu (pork broth) Ramen. The noodles were good- they were a bit al dente and chewy- not soggy. I like the seaweed, egg, and bamboo toppings with my egg not over cooked. This was not the best ramen I have had- a lot of yelpers actually complained about the noodles here, but it was ok. The one thing really missing was a sesame shaker like they have at my favorite Hakata Ramen. Service was nice- just like in japan, they don't "bother" you with cloying service. They had old school japo tv on and fun old time posters. "Legendary" There are many things that are legendary. I came here after one of my friends told me they had legendary ramen. I ordered "Legendary Torihei Ramen!" The restaurant sits in the same parking lot as SSG Yakitory and is in the same space where Chin Ma Ya once operated. Honestly, I would rather have Tan Tan Men ~Noodle The noodle was not a fresh noodle. It was the yellow noodle. It did not taste good at all. It was a tad rubbery. I am not sure if this was based on the brand of noodle or on whether it was cooked appropriately. I could not finish the noodle. ~Broth The broth was AOK. It was probably the best part of the meal. It did not have depth, but was good. There was a delicious piece of pork in the soup, but it was about have the size of my pinky. This pork was the absolute bomb diggity. Too bad it was so tiny, They sell a 70 dollar ramen bowl here. I can guarentee you this bowl does not cost more than 20 bucks..at most. I am not sure why they are selling it. I asked if they refill it for you on return visits if you purchase it. They said "No!" The restaurant is also decorated with Ramune drinks. I am not sure why. This restaurant in in Torrance. There are Japanese restaurants everywhere and everyone and their grandma knows what ramune is. It is like decorating a restaurant with Coke, Dr. Pepper, Pepsi bottle. This whole review is just my opinion. You may like it. For me, I am honest and I would rather have Chin Ma Ya here. As far as "Legendary" is concerned... At walk in, you get a sense of tradition by the decoration and interior -- vintage posters, calligraphy in a framed banner, maneki cat, paper lanterns, display of variety of Japanese beer bottles... Kitchen staff and wait staff greet and exchange in Japanese. I ordered the Tonkotsu ramen ($7.95). My my my, the slices of pork melt in the mouth right away. The thick miso broth was what I came here for. I drank it to the bottom of the bowl. My two friends each had the Tokyo Yatai ramen ($6.95) and the bento lunch box ($8.95). See photos. We came after church on Sunday. At 11:30, it was not crowded. I ordered the spicy miso charsiu. My son ordered the charsiu men. It is a seat yourself restaurant. The food was delivered quickly to the table. For the spicy miso, I ordered with extra charsiu but it only came with 3 thin pieces. I was expecting more for $2 extra. The soup was not as spicy or as rich as other places. It was closer to spice level 1. The soup was thin not thick and rich. The noodles were a nice consistency and the bean sprouts and corn added a nice crunch. There was only one snow pea cut in half on top. They also use Kleenex instead of napkins. One of my favorite ramen places in South Bay (granted I have a lot...) Their spicy miso is great, very flavorful without being salty. I actually prefer it over Santouka. Also the noodles are very firm and chewy, which I appreciate. I've also ordered their tsukemen, and I thought it was better than Tsujita's. Husband really likes their seafood ramen, which has 5 different kinds of seafood (clams, squid, scallop, etc) Overall, a great lunch place in South Bay with good, hearty portions. Recommend at least once if you're a ramen lover like me! tip: Even though tsukemen is during dinner time only, if you ask them they usually make it for you during lunchtime as well. So...technically that makes it a beef and veggie broth, right? I don't know what the rules are when naming broths. Let's give a backstory of how I found out this important piece of information. Long ago, my vegetarian brother-in-law went to Jidaiya and asked about the broth in the Vegetable Ramen. They told him it was made with vegetable broth. Cool. He and my sister eat there several times. They tell me about the Vegetable Ramen made with veggie broth. I go to the restaurant and see that the menu confirms that it's made with veggie broth. Cool. I write a glowing yelp review. Fellow yelper Anna C. reads my review then decides she's going to check it out. She calls Jidaiya to ask about the ramen and they tell her they do not offer vegetarian broth ramen. Confused, I call Jidayia, possibly hours after Anna called them, to question the broth. That's when the lady on the phone clarified that the Vegetable Ramen is made with vegetable broth but they do not recommend it for vegetarians because it contains beef flavor. Like I said, it would've been nice to have that information before. Is this considered false advertising? Technically no. It's not like they are target marketing this item to vegetarians or anything. So I'm not really pointing blame here. However, that doesn't change the fact that I feel misled. Yes, they openly told me when I asked them about the broth but will they offer that information to everyone that asks? My brother-in-law didn't get that information back when he asked. Is the beef flavor derived from beef? We really didn't get into that. But the fact that the gal on the phone suggested that it's not for vegetarians leads me to believe that the flavor might come from an animal product. VEGETARIANS BEWARE! I've been going to this ramen place frequently for the last 7 years and I can say this is the best ramen I've ever eaten so far in the USA. I live 40-50 minutes away and I still frequent this place very often. After eating this Ramen place, I can't really enjoy any other Ramen place in Southern California anymore. And yes, I've been to all the "popular" ramen spots in LA that you have to wait 2+ hours to eat. I feel like most tonkotsu broth in California look and taste exactly the same! They have this light milky tan look to it and taste exactly the same as every other tonkotsu ramen place I've eaten in California. But not Jidaiya! Jidaiya's Tonkotsu broth tastes so thick and meaty, I love it. The thick and chewy noodles compliment the Tonkotsu broth perfectly. I can't really fathom why this place isn't always crazy busy? Maybe most Americans prefer the taste of lighter/watery ramen? The Tonkotsu broth here for sure is cooked for exceedingly long time. The only complaint I really have about the tonkotsu broth is that I feel like the broth thickness is really inconsistent the many times I've been here. Sometimes it's so thick it tastes a bit irony and sometimes it's on the lighter side. (Still delicious though) Even if it's an unpopular opinion! I'm going to say it. I like this place more than Tsujita. Though Tsujita does have comparable thickness in broth, I enjoy the simpler amount of ingredients/toppings of Jidaiya. I've personally never understood Daikokuya at all. Is there a name for this type of thick broth? I think(?) it's fish based? Are there any other Ramen places like this near here? When I went to Japan and waited 2-3+ hours in line to get in to the most popular Ramen restaurants, they had thick textures like this. If you like nice thick tonkotsu broths, I'd definitely give this place a try. The ramen is actually really cheap comparably to most Ramen places. There is almost never a wait to get a table. no break between lunch and dinner, so I stopped by. I was interested in the Sapporo ramen but it was all miso based, and I don't like miso. I ended up going with the Tokyo ramen (shoyu base) but it is just too fishy. I should have tried the Tonkatsu. the broth is decent, just too fishy (but it tells you on the menu there is minced fish in it). the noodles were average, the egg was too cold. despite that, the chashu was quite tasty and the price is right... with enough sesame oil, pepper and vinegar, I managed to overpower the fish sauce so if you're craving ramen between 230 and 5, when everyone else is closed, come here and try to tonkatsu broth with extra chash and the server was very kind and professional and prompt. excellent customer service read more

I must have come here on their bad day, but according to my coworkers, this ramen was supposed to be comparable with Yamadaya, especially their way of giving the free garlic cloves. Unfortunately, I can't give higher than 3 stars yet, I'm giving this place another try because it's so close to my workplace, less than 2 miles away. Let's move on to the review of the food: Negatives: - Noodle: not fancy of it, it was the chewy yellow noodle, in which I prefer hakata straight noodle (just like Yamadaya has) - Broth: it was pretty watery, so flavor wise, it wasn't there, couldn't taste the spicyness of the tonkotsu broth at all. - Toppings: they are okay, regular toppings just like other ramen locations, although it has hard-boiled egg only vs. flavored egg. - Service: so-so Positives: - Garlic was provided, though you have to walk to the Spice Table to do it. - UFO dumpling: this was pretty good, I loved this, so different than regular gyoza and interesting on how they served it, hence the name UFO. - Payment: they accepted credit cards now, that's a major plus since I know many ramen places nearby only accepted CASH ONLY. Another solid ramen spot has popped up in Gardena! Came here for lunch on a Thursday and the place was packed. Luckily we were able to grab 2 counter seats within 5 minutes. The thing about the ramen here, especially the tonkotsu broth ramen, is that it is suuuuper oily. BUT it has an incredible amount of flavor, so if you are a fan of heavier flavored ramen, then this is the place. The tonkotsu miso ramen is a good choice for the miso fan, although I like their tonkotsu shoyu ramen more. The little soy sauce added gives it a nuttier flavor! Ramen comes with yellow egg noodle and it is cooked perfect. Straight ramen can be requested but I'm a fan of the curly noodles. Still got a bite to it and I love how when I chopstick the ramen out of the broth, the noodle brings a bit of the broth with it. Again, the broth is heavy, but they do provide fresh garlic cloves and mashed garlic there at the table on the side. It's actually a really good idea to add a bit of garlic since that will cut the heaviness. There's garlic press here if you're a fan of really fresh garlic or if you're lazy, go ahead with the mashed garlic. I actually added a bit too much, so I killed a whole gum of pack but it was worth it! Topping-wise, you get your usual bamboo, soft-boiled egg, fishcake, and green onion. Comes with one piece of chasu. Chasu wasn't amazing, but it is solid. Instead of the lunch special combo, which comes with rice pilaf, small small salad, and choice of karage or gyoza, I went for a spicy tuna bowl on the side. Jidaiya's spicy tuna bowl is pretty damn good, with the spicy tuna having a little bit of kick. Not a fan of their salmon sashimi bowl though. Service-wise, all the girls there were very friendly. One of the waitress told me that next time, instead of my grabbing the garlic from the condiment table, just holler and they'll bring over. Good to know! I came here expecting to be able to try the Ramen Burger but was disappointed to find out they no longer serve it! This was actually the only reason I stopped by.... Sooooo.... Yea. My experience was probably a bit ruined by this. I then opted for the spicy miso ramen. It wasn't anything spectacular to be honest but then again, I'm not a huge ramen fan. It was fairly good and a pretty good portion for the price. The broth had a pretty nice kick to it. I came to Jidaiya once right around the time they opened. I don't remember exactly which ramen I ordered but I think it was probably the tonkotsu broth or spicy miso or something. I remember I didn't enjoy their ramen at all so I never came back but the other day, my mom's friend told me to try their tokyo yatai style ramen (shoyu ramen made out of chicke broth) and I'm glad I tried it. :D +Tokyo yatai ramen was good! I'm a shoyu ramen fan more than tonkotsu so I'm glad that they serve pretty good shoyu ramen! Shoyu ramen is SO hard to find since the tonkotsu soup is the current trend. I should have known their shoyu broth will be good since it is made with chicken broth & the owner also owns Torihei, which is a veryyy good chicken skewer restaurant. +Tokyo yatai ramen comes with soft boiled egg! I know some ramen shop don't serve it with soft boiled egg so that was a plus. +Ramen is only $6.95! Wahh, that's pretty competitive price for a bowl of rame with egg! +They do point cards! If you order 3 tonkotsu ramen, you'll get $3 off your next bowl. If you order 3 shoyu ramen, you'l get $3 off your next bowl. If you order 3 random miscellaneous ramen, you'll get $3 off your next item.
