This is my favorite Jim's location. Not only is the food well prepared, the waitresses are the best & the manager's great too. I drive 3.5 miles further to dine at this location. This Thanksgiving I decided to try their Thanksgiving special. WOW! It was the BEST I've ever had in TX & LA. It's prepared fresh from scratch. Got here at about 8 am. Parking was available. Had my coffee and breakfast at 8:13...great turn around time. The waitress didn't talk much but I am not and do not look like the talking type so that worked for me. Mainly because I am not a morning person. Everyone else, either played with there cell phones or just looked like they came off the streets. Not too busy for a noon lunch. So expected some fresh cooked food. My kids love to eat at Jim's for the chicken fingers, texas toast, gravy and macaroni and cheese. Mon, Tue, Wed - kids eat free, so that's a bonus. I have actually enjoyed the food I've eaten here so far - the fish is good, the chicken with the grilled onions in mushrooms, and the chopped steak. It's your basic diner/cafeteria food. I love going to Jims and we mostly have decent experiences. Today I brought my mother bragging how great it was and how great the food was. The food was great and service wasn't terrible, but cleanliness of the restaurant was horrible. Bugs were everywhere and the mens bathroom sink had bugs surrounding the sink. I was disgusted. Jim's is everything you'd expect from a greasy spoon 24-hour diner, and nothing that surprises you. I love being able to get an omelet and hashbrowns at any hour, and it's always at least okay, sometimes great. The restaurants (there are a ton, we've visited about six) tend to be acceptably clean, the food of comparable quality between locations. We like the food but this restaurant really needs to fix their ventilation in the kitchen. It was actually hazy today when we walked in. The smoke smell from the kitchen was awful. They have the best chicken fried chicken that I've ever tired. And their onion rings are the best in San Antonio. I haven't tried anything here that I haven't liked. I'm giving this place 3 stars instead of 5 because of the customer service. With the exception of one good waitress...everytime that I've been there there's always some issue with customer service. From them arguing about who is going to wait on you (because they're busy talking) and having to go to the station and basically get your own drink refill because no one comes to your table---and they're not busy. I would like to lodge a complaint against our waitress Jackie. On the morning that we visited, we were told by the manager to sit wherever we wanted. My young daughter likes to sit at the big tables because she thinks it's a lot of fun, so we sat down. When our waitress came up behind us, she said `you're taking my last big table.' I informed her that we were told to sit wherever we wanted.' She repeated again that it was `her last big table.' Again, I told her that we were told to sit wherever we wanted. Then my mother joked with my daughter saying she liked to sit at the big tables and she asked `why do you like to sit at the big tables?' When my daughter said `she didn't know.' Then Jackie told her in a very condescending way, `oh yes you doooooo.' My daughter is 10. She is not a baby and I didn't appreciate her taking that tone with her. We sat down and the waitress hurried us to get our orders. When our orders were delivered, my mother's eggs were wrong. She had ordered sunny side up and they were over easy, not to mention cold too. She ate them though because honestly Jackie had soured our experience right from the get-go. I couldn't finish my order either because my eggs were cold too. When Jackie came by I was in the middle of talking with my mother and Jackie sat there and waited until I was done. She then told me that next time I `should order the senior plate, so you won't let anything go to waste.' I didn't know what she was suggesting. I am not a senior citizen. I'm 47 years old. I didn't appreciate the tone or the implication. Clearly, she was trying to make a point because she waited until I was done with my mother before she left. Before we settled up the bill, I left Jackie a note on a napkin informing her that they shouldn't tell customers to sit wherever they want to and then complain when they do. I also told her, not that it was any of her business, that I didn't finish my food because I didn't like it. I didn't appreciate her suggestion that I order off the senior menu. What does she care how much food I left? She didn't pay for it. While I was waiting at the counter to pay, she bussed our table then yelled past another table to me that she wasn't complaining about where we sat. I informed her that she was and she kept arguing with me in front of other customers. I told her that she needed to get some manners. I have been to this location before and we've never had an issue with where we were sitting. In fact, we've had great service and no one every complained when we took a big table. My mother and I watched guests come in and we were certainly willing to move had a big party come in but every party after us was two or four people. I also listened to Jackie with other customers and she wasn't as rude and condescending to them as she was to us. Despite my Anglo surname, we are Hispanic so I had to wonder if her attitude was because we were Hispanic. My family has been patrons of this Jim's location for many years. It's special to us because my dad used to bring my mom there quite a bit before he passed. I had to wonder what he would have thought about the treatment we received this morning. Especially the way your waitress treated his granddaughter. We won't be going back as long as that racist waitress is there. read more

The Jim's brand is famous in San Antonio. I think that after all of these years they have managed to keep the quality and the affordable prices that we all want. The menu has been expanded with new offerings, and most of them are really good. I am happy that they have more contemporary breakfast offerings and a larger variety of dinner options including some Italian themed dishes. I would happily visit any of the Jims restaurants in San Antonio still! I really miss the location on Walzem though! It was always one of their nicer places! read more

My daughters and I had lunch here today after shopping at nearby Academy for soccer gear. I promised them lunch if they behaved themselves, and I saw this Jim's across the loop. I hadn't been to a Jim's in years. When we walked in, my 7-year-old said, "I already like this place," noticing with approval the spacious booths and colorful/retro overhead lighting. Our booth was sticky (maybe it hadn't been cleaned?), but the girls didn't notice when our server handed them coloring placemats and crayons. Drinks were quickly brought in cute, plastic lidded cups. My older daughter opted for the chicken finger basket, and my younger daughter ordered a corn dog with macaroni & cheese. I chose a cup of tortilla soup (mighty tasty!) and 1/2 grilled cheese sandwich, served on buttery Texas toast with lackluster, soggy french fries. My daughters thoroughly enjoyed their meals (although my older daughter stated that she did not find the chicken to be as "magical" as the roasted chicken at Tre Trattoria--maybe she needs her own Yelp account?). The grand finale was junior milkshakes, also served in the little plastic cups. This is a solid, very affordable local choice for families with young children. read more

I used to love Jim's. I still eat here occasionally, but most of the locations have really gone downhill...like the paint on the building, carpeting, ceiling tiles (might be growing mold). I know they can afford to invest in the buildings, because they just built a brand new Frontier Burger off Loop 410. The diners are 24 hour operations. Guess they don't want to have to shut down just to do renovations. If they found a good contractor they could get it done in a few weeks or less. I just think it's a shame that the owners don't take better care of their restaurants. You have a loyal following here in San Antonio and your customer's deserve better, Jim's family!! read more
